CHERA RASMUSSEN 778.885.0359

Mayor for District of North Vancouver

The holiday season is almost upon us again, and I can’t help thinking about New Year’s Day and the crazy mob that comes to Deep Cove to parade in swimsuits and bizarre costumes and stampede like lunatics into the ocean surrounded by snow-capped mountains. And then, having partaken in this quintessentially Canadian rite, the revellers warm themselves in front of a bonfire tended by North Shore Rescue and dance, in snow boots and wool hats, to the rhythms of Gary Comeau’s New Orleans zydeco band. Makes me proud to be Canadian AND from the North Shore! We have a lot to be grateful for as our community becomes more diverse and reflects the Canada of the 21st century. Traditions brought in by our newer immigrant groups are being added to our proud heritage of Indigenous peoples. Community events now embrace First Nations’ blessings and expressions of gratitude. Norouz or Persian New Year, has

massive support in the community, and Christian celebrations share calendar space and rejoicing with other faiths. On the North Shore we both honour our traditional events, and welcome the new ones. Do you know that for the past decade there have been three thriving Remembrance Day celebrations (Victoria Park, Lynn Valley and Cates Park/ Whey-ah-Wichen), all of which are organized by local volunteers? Our Remembrance Day parade up Lonsdale is one of the largest in Canada, sponsored by our social service clubs and others. Years ago I remember celebrating the opening day of North Vancouver Girls Softball Association at McCartney Creek Park, as the bagpiper led a hundred brightly clad softballers through a knee-deep, fresh snowfall under a bright blue sky! Makes you proud to be Canadian! So thanks to Bob Putnam and Erian Baxter and their colleagues at Deep Cove Kayak (the Lions Club before them) who put their time and effort into organizing the annual Penguin Plunge and celebrating the new year in our wacky Canadian way. A Jan. 1 appearance at the Cove will surely be a highlight in your calendar! On a more serious

note, please do park your vehicle in Myrtle Park, at Cove Cliff Elementary or even Seycove school. The walk helps you warm up, work off the turkey-fed drowsiness, and keep the Cove full of people rather than cars. Best wishes from our council to all of you for the holiday season. And bring your swimsuit to the Cove on New Year’s Day! b

Traditions

From Christmas Day bowling to dim sum, Cove merchants share their personal and some unconventional holiday traditions. – Maria Spitale-Leisk

“I usually go home for Christmas, to Kimberley. We always go to my cousin’s for Christmas Eve and sing carols and have some family time.” Paul MacKenzie, owner, Covert Neighbourhood Cafe

“Dim sum Christmas morning with my family and all the cousins, grandparents and everyone in town.” Jacklynn Hansel, clerk, LaLa’s in the Cove

“I’m from Russia, so we don’t celebrate Christmas (on Dec. 25). We have a family gathering on New Year’s Eve with a Christmas tree and lots and lots of food. One special salad we eat is made from beets, potatoes, fish and mayonnaise. It’s not healthy, but it’s traditional. It’s in layers, like a cake, and you cut it.” Kate Petrova, staff member, Bluhouse Market & Cafe

“We make a gingerbread village with friends every year. There’s always a theme - this year it’s the North Pole. We always have mulled wine going.” Lisa Devine, team member, The SH( )P by Paper Label

“I just got my (permanent) residency a couple weeks ago. And my girlfriend and I just got our own suite and we are going to be hopefully making new (Christmas) traditions that we will be able to enjoy with our family down the road.” Luci Cadman, originally from England, now works at Cafe Orso On Christmas morning Luci and her girlfriend Danielle will be serving up waffles and other European specialities at Café Orso.

“I go home for Christmas, to Trail. We always go to my family’s house for a big turkey dinner. We always play poker. But this year I’m going to Mexico.” Michaely Taggart, server, Arms Reach Bistro

Humanitarian holiday The Christmas elves are out in full force in the Cove. Kudos to district workers for stringing glowing bulbs in the trees behind the cultural centre – making seasons bright in our village. And to the pantomime actors inside the centre who are practising hard to put a smile on our faces. Thanks to the merchants on Gallant who collected donations for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. And Seycove social justice students for putting together Christmas hampers for the less fortunate and raising spirits of Downtown Eastside residents. For many, Christmas can be a challenging time of year – when feelings of despair and loneliness are elevated. There’s the unemployed parent who struggles just to put food on the table. Or the elderly senior who is shut-in during the holidays. There are many ways to give back at Christmas. You can volunteer with Operation Red Nose and drive people safely home

in their vehicle. Rides are provided by donation and proceeds support North Shore youth programs. Email volunteer@ nsorn.org to learn more. Harvest Project, Lookout Emergency Aid Society and North Shore Women’s Centre are in need of food, clothing and toiletry donations, not only at Christmas but also throughout the year. Being charitable this Christmas is as easy as leaving your empties out for ‘Santa.’ Literally. There’s a guy named Hank, who for years has been driving around the North Shore, including the Seymour area, collecting bottles and cans to recycle for charity. Visit hankschristmasglitter.com to arrange a pickup. And finally thanks to families on Marykirk Place (Blueridge) and Beachview Drive (Deep Cove) for investing time and energy into their Griswold-esque Christmas light show every year. Happy Holidays from the staff at the Deep Cove Crier! b

SEYCOVE SAINTS Students in Seycove Secondary’s social justice classes, including Tim Ye and Siobhan McDonald, have put together hampers for families in need and will take part in the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau’s Wish Breakfast at the Pan Pacific hotel on Dec. 13. Afterwards, the Seycove students will sit down with preschool kids at Lord Strathcona school to do some Christmas activities and also play bingo with residents of the Downtown Eastside at a community centre near Oppenheimer Park. ALL IS BRIGHT The Laberge family at 753 Beachview Dr. has brought back their epic and animated Christmas light display this December. The nightly show features 15,000 LED lights set to music - ranging from classic Christmas songs to the Star Wars theme to charttopping pop and rock tunes - and the ability to project more than 16 million different colours across the night sky. Donations to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank are accepted. Playlists, timings and videos of the display are available at laberge.christmas. PHOTO PAUL MCGRATH

How does your family celebrate Christmas? Is having a turkey at Christmas part of your tradition? Does your family put out a Nativity scene? The term nativity comes from the Latin nativus, which means arisen by birth. One of the most popular Christmas carols, “Feliz Navidad,” was written in 1970 by blind Puerto Rican singer and songwriter José Feliciano. Feliz Navidad in Spanish essentially means happy birth. It is easy to forget that Christmas at its heart is a birthday celebration. I don’t know about you, but I love birthdays. Maybe that is why I love Christmas. One of my earliest Crier articles, co-written with my wife Janice, was about birth, the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Janice wrote: “Decorating for Christmas was always a wonderful time in our house. First we would go buy a real tree at the tree lot, set it up in the window, and start

decorating. Not only did we decorate the tree but my dad also put miniature lights around this huge mirror and set up the angels dancing around the candle chimes. My little brother’s eyes would glow when we turned off the normal lighting and just left the Christmas lights on in the living room. What a beautiful sight!” As a child, I loved the presents, the lights, the turkey and the tinsels. As a teen, I became cynical about Christmas and wrote it off as commercial exploitation. At age 17, I met some friends who had a joy and inner peace that really attracted me to them. Christmas still excited them. I asked them: “Why?” They told me they were excited about a child in a manger. At age 17, I too came to know that child. I made a manger for Him in my heart. Once again Christmas stirred within me: “Peace on Earth, good will to men.” Once again I could sing “Joy to the World” and really mean it. Each Christmas we are given another opportunity

to have a real fun birthday party. We don’t need to do Christmas perfectly. What if we could simply enjoy the season? As we gather around the Christmas manger, we are reminded that we are deeply loved and we are never alone. It is not a coincidence that people love to sing at Christmastime. Christmas touches our hearts in unexpected ways. Christmas breaks through our adult cynicism and gives us child-like joy and peace, if only for a short time. What might help your Christmas to become more child-like this year? What burdens do you need to lay aside so that you can enter into the mystery of this holy, joyful season? Our 2017 Christmas prayer is that all the Deep Cove Crier readers feel the peace of that little baby lying in the manger. Merry Christmas! b Rev. 7 DEEP COVE CRIER DECEMBER 2017

2017.....It’s almost over, as is our hot market!

Throughout this year, we have seen a gradual decline in the market, particularly for detached homes. Sellers who sold in 2016 generally experienced much more robust activity than those who sold this past year. Over the last quarter, even the sales of attached homes (which had remained insanely strong most of 2017) have started to slow. It could be the pre-Christmas market slowdown we often see but it feels like it is a market shift. In 2018 we will see the implementation of the new mortgage rules which will affect a significant segment of the buyers for both detached and attached homes. As a work-aholic, I hate to see market downturns but given how crazy our market has been without significant slowdowns, for almost 18 years, a downturn seems inevitable. As they say, “What goes up must come down” even in Vancouver real estate. Shifting markets require a different approach for both sellers and buyers. If you would like to discuss how to best position yourself in the new reality, please contact me. Patricia Houlihan, LLB Personal Real Estate Corporation

BRITISH INVASION AT DECEMBER DEEP COVE COFFEE HOUSE

The annual Shoreside Celebration in Deep Cove on Dec. 9 features a bonfire, decorated boats and kids’ activities.

PANTO PROMISES FESTIVE FUN AND LAUGHTER

by MARIA SPITALE-LEISK The shores of Deep Cove will be brightened this holiday season when the annual Carol Ship Parade cruises by Panorama Park on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Enjoy a warm and festive evening filled with musical entertainment, roving performers, free craft workshops, a blazing bonfire and beautiful lights. Santa himself may even stop by. Donations of food or unwrapped gifts will be collected in support of community programs run by Harvest Project and Family Services of the North Shore. Some of the most needed items include gifts for teen girls and boys, canned foods, condiments, rice, pasta, toiletries and diapers.

JOY TO THE WORLD

Join the North Shore Chorus as they present a concert filled with Christmas classics, featuring musical compositions and arrangements by John Rutter, Dec. 9, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Ave. nschorus.com

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a Deep Cove pantomime delivering some holiday hijinks – and The Grand Old Duke of York is no exception. In the ancient city of York trouble is brewing. The conniving Baron Snatcher has cancelled the Annual Fayre and banned fun and laughter. Even worse, he is plotting with the Evil Fairy Maleficent to overthrow the Duke and destroy his famous army of Ten Thousand Men. It is up to the gypsy boy, Colin, and a ragged group of misfits to outsmart the villains. With the help of Old Mother Shipton, the good witch, their adventure full of song and dance, silly jokes, and slapstick routines may end with love triumphing over evil. Directed for Deep Cove Stage Society by Angie McLeod and produced by Neil Wilkie, The Grand Old Duke of York will be staged Dec. 15-17, 20-23 and 27-29 at 7:30 p.m., along with 3:30 p.m. matinees Dec. 16-17, 23, 26 and 30 at Deep Cove Shaw Theatre, 4360 Gallant Ave. Tickets: $16 all ages, deepcovestage.com or 604-929-3200.

Contemporary folk singer-songwriter Chris Ronald will bring his British invasion-inspired sound to the Deep Cove Coffee House on Friday, Dec. 15. The U.K. native says his music is influenced by countless British and North American artists of the 1960s onward and has been described as Canadian folk with British roots. Nominated for Songwriter of the Year at the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Ronald, an international touring artist, draws on his abilities as a skilled singer, storyteller and musician (guitar, harmonica, ukulele) to deliver a show that is captivating and unique. This year Ronald added another batch of original songs to his repertoire with his latest album, Fragments. Opening acts: Lyndsay Wills & the No Frills String Band, Linda Bates & Jackson Shafer, Brooks Kenna. Admission: $12 and includes baked goodies, coffee, tea and cold drinks. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Seymour United Church, 1200 Parkgate Ave.

Deep Cove Kayak owner Erian Baxter has designed some sentimental pendants in honour of her friend, former Spirit of the West frontman John Mann, who is currently battling early onset Alzheimer’s. The personalized silver pendants are hand stamped with sayings including Appreciate and Celebrate, as well as the title of Spirit of the West’s iconic song “Home for a Rest.” When the band performed their last concert Baxter made Mann and his mates these pendants, to commemorate and always remember their indelible mark on the Canadian music scene. For her recent fundraiser, Spirit of Canada, Baxter has fashioned 100 more pendants, with proceeds donated to Mann’s continuing medical care. If you donate a minimum of $50 to gofundme.com/spirit-of-canada, message Baxter at baxter.e@telus. net and she will provide you with a pendant. Custom orders are available. You can see the pendants in person at The SH( )P by Paper Label in the Cove. PHOTO SUPPLIED ERIAN BAXTER
