For fall 2018, décor is taking a nod from fashion’s Bordeaux and blush pairings. Case in point: these intense, and innocent, finds.

WITH
GILLIAN SEGAL Lise Boullard interview
Since launching Gillian Segal Design in 2014 you’ve become sought-after in the Lower Mainland for your unique esthetic, completing an array of commercial and residential projects spanning from custom builds to small renos to home furnishing. How do you describe your décor style? I call it ‘modern eclectic’. It’s kind of my own phrase. I like contemporary design that has a lot of warmth and character and often includes mixing pieces from different eras and different genres of design. Overall it still feels modern and collected.
G
illian Segal, one of Vancouver’s most sought-after interior designers and founder of the Yaletown-based boutique firm Gillian Segal Design, recently completed her most exciting project yet—building her own home. Here, the Martha Stewart contributor, wife of Adam Segal and mom to a 13-month-old girl shares fall’s hottest décor and reno trends, how to make regret-free design decisions—and the comfort food she’s serving her family this fall.
You and your family are preparing to move into the four-bedroom home you recently built in Kitsilano. Tell us about the new digs. We built a house! It’s almost done so we’re moving in two weeks. It is a completely white flat stucco exterior home. Everything is very modern but influenced by very traditional elements. I tried to have a lot of fun experimenting with different colour palettes and different materials and trying to take risks in places I didn’t think a client would go for but that I thought would be really cool. The main floor is super open concept. We are so not fancy and we’re on a 33-foot lot which is not super wide so I decided to eliminate everything formal. We haven’t done a formal dining room or living room so that we could just have one casual eating space and one big living room that will serve as our family room and entertaining room. I find so many clients want these formal spaces but then they never use them. What will you be serving your family in that kitchen this fall? I love entertaining at home and I really love to cook. I make a Bolognese sauce and I’ll make it with Port. If we want to indulge we’ll have it with pasta but otherwise we’ll use zucchini noodles. continued on page B6

I’m obsessed with wild grasses right now, and Pampas grasses last forever. You can buy a bunch of them, stick them in a vase and you’re good for a month on your flower budget.

Which lessons did you learn through your home-building process that you could share with readers embarking on their own home builds and renovations? I think the biggest thing is that if you’re going to ask others for advice, select just one or two people whose opinions you really value. They’re huge financial decisions (you’re making) and you’re going to live with them for potentially decades. (When planning our home build) I decided to only show my ideas to my husband and the team that works with me and I just kind of went with my gut. Everyone wants to weigh in but you’re the one who has to live with it. Where will you be shopping for your home décor items? In Vancouver I love Inform Interiors; I think the quality and offering that they have is amazing. And Once a Tree Furniture does a lot of custom stuff; they have a great selection of lines and are really lovely to work with. If I’m looking for things on a budget I really love CB2. They do such a great job of making high design accessible. They’re the Zara of furniture. And DaVinci’s Home inWestVan has the most eclectic mix of accessories. If feels a lot more “NewYork” than Vancouver.
Gillian Segal Design collaborated with Once A Tree Furniture on their designer showcase in 2017 to create this space which boasts warm layered texture and Segal’s favourite fall floral: Pampas grass. Furniture and decor available at Once A Tree Furniture, art by Carla Tak and photo by Tracey Ayton Photography.
What are some décor trends that you’ll be incorporating to make your new home feel cosier for fall? I’m obsessed with wild grasses right now, and Pampas grasses last forever. You can buy a bunch of them, stick them in a vase and you’re good for a month on your flower budget. I always relate fashion and interiors as one and the same. Aritzia and a bunch of big brands have come out with coats in wool or shearling fabric. I’ve been seeing that a lot on chairs and ottomans. It feels very cosy but I love that it’s creamy and light. I also love a good sheepskin throw. And oxblood maroon and blush rose continue to be big for fall. The secrets of a successful home reno? Just ask an award-winning contractor
TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR
Kevin Hatch, co-owner of award-winning Twin Lions Contracting, regularly gets calls from eager homeowners who want to start on a renovation project immediately.
■ Relationship. “We become a large part of your life for a short period of time. Make sure the relationship fits” says Hatch.
“They want to start their project within the month and they want it done in two months. But the real secret to a successful reno is having a lot of lead time,” he explains. “We’ve found that in our most successful renovations we’ve had good lead time before starting the project.” Months before starting a search for the right contractor, Hatch recommends that homeowners sit down and really think about what they want to accomplish with the reno. Are you a young family that needs additional space or a mortgage helper? Are your kids university-bound and you’d love to downsize? Or are you an aspiring chef with dreams of a gourmet kitchen and quality entertaining space? “Know what you really want and decide what you can realistically afford. Write down the scope of the work and prioritize your goals. With the right planning and lead time the whole process should be fun. It’s not fun if you’re scrambling to pick materials at the last minute or you’re rushing to hit deadlines.”
And, adds Hatch, if you are able to find a contractor who can start your project within the month, chances are they may not be the best choice. “Quality contractors are really busy. And September is the time when people start calling about projects for next year,” says Hatch. So how do you make your contractor short-list? “Word of mouth is generally the best. Talk to your friends, family, people in the neighbourhood,” he said, adding that you can also check with the Greater Vancouver Homebuilders Association. “Narrow it down to three or four contractors you think would be a good fit and give them a call.” Once you’ve found the right contractor for your job, be patient. The permit process for example, can take between one to three months for a renovation and longer if you are doing a new build or laneway home. “Ultimately our holistic approach to renovations is that it is supposed to be a fun process. You are creating this awesome space for yourself and your family,” says Hatch. If you are planning a renovation, learn more about Twin Lions by visiting twinlionscontracting.com, emailing info@twinlionscontracting.com or calling 604-210-8435.

■ Experience. “Have they done jobs like the one you are planning? Or have they only done a specific kind of project? Check that they have the experience to complete your project.” ■ Project tracking. “Their systems are just as important as the construction work. Will they track your costs properly? Stick to the budget? Stay on schedule?
