The Queen’s Gambit inspires renovation of old giant chessboard in North Vancouver park ■ ELISIA SEEBER, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter
For fans of The Queen’s Gambit, a Netflix miniseries, Grand Boulevard Park may be a new favourite hangout spot. A once old, forgotten giant concrete chessboard located at the park between 13th and 15th streets, that the City of North Vancouver estimates may have been installed 30 years ago, has been given new life just in time for summer. “The concrete pad with the chessboard markings has been in place for many years, but there haven’t been pieces to play with, and the markings faded long ago,” said Pardeep Purewal, the city’s manager of communications and engagement. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Purewal said the city had noticed more people were spending more time outside exploring the city’s diverse park system, and city staff were always looking at new (or in this case old) ways of activating those spaces for everyone’s enjoyment.

“Chess is going through a bit of a resurgence in popularity and staff thought it would be fun to repaint the old chessboard and provide some pieces to make it functional.” The chess comeback was sparked by the Netflix show The Queen’s Gambit, which was released back in October 2020. The bingeworthy miniseries is set during the Cold War era and follows the life of an orphaned chess prodigy named Beth Harmon. While it’s about chess, this miniseries is anything but boring and it has had viewers hooked as it dives into the intricacies of the game and follows Harmon as she struggles with addiction in her quest to become the greatest chess player in the world. While we can’t all be chess prodigies, the now
shiny and new chessboard, which is about three square metres in size, is ready for use at Grand Boulevard Park, for all those inspired by fictional character Harmon to sharpen their skills or just have a little fun with friends. The chess pieces can be found in a storage box next to the board, which is locked from dusk to dawn. “We ask users to make sure they put the pieces back in the box when they’re done so they can be also be enjoyed by others,” Purewal said. With pandemic restrictions easing up, Mayor Linda Buchanan said it was clear people were eager to get outside and reconnect with their friends, family, and the community, and the city was committed to ensuring the parks offered a wide range of interesting activities. “I know that we are all hoping for a summer filled with fun and relaxation,” she said. “This pandemic has reaffirmed the value of adding vibrancy to our shared public spaces such as our parks. We are committed to delivering a range of programming and infrastructure, such as the oversized chessboard at Grand Boulevard

Park, to make space for all people.” Plus, she’s also a bit of chess fan herself. “I know that I will be out there playing a game or two, having been inspired by The Queen’s Gambit,” Buchanan said. “Let the summer fun begin!” For those who aren’t that into chess, there are a number of other parks across the city with fun features. See the list below for ideas.
Other fun park features to check out with your mates Putting green Calling all golf fanatics. At Sam Walker Park, sometimes referred to as Walker Triangle (because the park is shaped like a small triangle), at East Eighth and East Ninth at St. Andrews Avenue, you will find a putting green. The community petitioned the city for this fun edition back in 2013. Completed in the summer of 2016, the park now boasts an artificial turf multiuse space that can be used as a putting green, a yoga or exercise area, or simply a green space to enjoy.
Labyrinths Those who like a puzzle may enjoy trying to find their way through the labyrinths mowed into the grass at Waterfront Park and Mahon Park. The city installed its very first labyrinth in Mahon Park, near Fen Burdett Stadium, back in 2019 and has since mowed a new one into the grass at Waterfront Park. The city says the Cascadia Society has used the Mahon Park labyrinth as a therapy tool, but it’s there for all to enjoy. Foosball table At Moodyville Park, located along the Spirit Trail north of East Second Street and east of Moody Avenue, visitors will find an outdoor foosball table. As well as a foosball table, the park has a number of facilities including a bike pump track, sports court, ping pong table, picnic areas, walking paths, a large playground, public art and natural areas. Table tennis (ping pong) If you fancy a game of outdoor table tennis (ping pong) there are a number of parks with tables. You’ll find them at Rogers Plaza (mid-100 block on West First Street), Moodyville Park, and at The Shipyards.

Labyrinth at Mahon Park
Disc golf At Eastview Park, which sits on the eastern border of the city in the Cedar Village neighbourhood at Rufus Drive and Cedar Village Close, a disc golf course can be found among the trees. The disc golf course is short, but the obstacles make up for its lack of length, according to the Professional Disc Golf Association. You’ll find the first tee at the entrance by Cedar Village Close (the hole number is on the cross beam). There are course maps with lengths at two locations, but most of the baskets are easy to find along the way. Fitness equipment Wit h the weather this good, it seems a waste to spend time in the gym – Fen Burdett Stadium field at Mahon Park at Jones Avenue between West 16th
and West 17th streets offers the best of both worlds with a bunch of outdoor exercise equipment. The city has completed a range of renovations at the stadium, which was first opened in 1914. The park now offers an artificial turf sports field, a rubberized community track, a recreational running track, and pods of adult fitness equipment. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the sunshine and burn some calories at the same time (for those who classify exercise as “fun”). More park features can be found on the city’s interactivegispublic.cnv.org/ parks ◆ Elisia Seeber is the North Shore News’ Indigenous and civic affairs reporter. fabulous themes for an outdoor party
Do you want to throw an outdoor party for your family and friends? If so, here are five ideas for an unforgettable themed event.
Western Barbecue
Whether you opt for pork, chicken or beef, serve up slow-cooked meats or grilled fillets at your Westernthemed event. Alternatively, you can pair burgers with homemade potato chips. For the decor, think hay bales, cacti and check-patterned napkins. Stick to a red and brown palette, and make sure everyone gets a cowboy hat.
Mexican Fiesta
For a Mexican-themed bash, set up an elaborate taco bar or grill burritos and corn on the barbecue. Remember to have plenty of tequila on hand for the adults. To help set the mood, play mariachi music and embellish your backyard with a pinata and other vibrant decorations.
Rustic Picnic
For a backyard picnic, put together a menu of deli meats, cheeses, fresh breads, salads, vegetables and pâtés. For an elegant spin on the traditional picnic esthetic, set tables with white tablecloths and Mason jar lanterns. Serve cold lemonade or iced tea when guests arrive.
Tropical Paradise
Toss shrimps, scallops and salmon on the barbecue and serve them with an assortment of grilled vegetables at a tropical-themed party. Use flowers, seashells, palm trees and sand to transform your patio into a backyard beach retreat.
Tutti-frutti Fest
For a playful twist on a classic garden party, make fresh summer fruit the star of the show. From rainbow fruit kabobs and salads to multi-coloured cocktails, sorbets and ice pops, there’s no shortage of menu options. Brighten up your yard with fruit-patterned tablecloths, coconut cups and whimsical decorations.
Remember to let guests know about the party’s theme ahead of time and encourage them to dress accordingly for the event. SUPPLIED BY NEWSPAPER TOOLBOX | PHOTO GETTYIMAGES

A sweet, aromatic learning experience ■ ELIZABETH JAMES
How would you like to put aside your woes for a while and, alone or with a friend, do some exploring in North Vancouver’s Shipyards? If you do, you’ll soon find yourself following a sweet aroma right to the door of Main Street Honey Shoppe, a local business born in 2013 that moved to The Shipyards in October 2019. “We offer the best selection of high-quality, completely natural honeybee products you could find,” said owner and chief honey officer Tony Lovse. Despite his 20 years in the honey business, and his beemaster certificate from the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Simon Fraser University, Lovse says he still considers himself more of a bee-keeping hobbyist. “Beekeeping attracts people from all walks of life,” he explained. He says a master beekeeper usually has several years of experience, is always passionate about the bees – their continuing health and environment – and has a drive to learn more about, and from, the bees themselves. Lovse, whose own enthusiasm for his work spills over as he talks, was quick to mention another Honey Shoppe essential:
“Along with our Queen Bee [wife Kandy Lovse] we have a fantastic staff, all of whom have extensive knowledge of honeybee products,” he said.
“Some of them help look after the beehives we have at Van Dusen Gardens and Queen Elizabeth Park over in Vancouver, and can answer most of the beekeeping questions our customers ask.” Many of those questions might arise when you walk through the Honey Shoppe doors for the first time and discover that a simple discussion about bees and the honey they produce touches only the surface of a wide-ranging, fascinating topic. Most people know about the importance of honeybees as pollinators, but what’s not always common knowledge is the extent of that activity. “Like other bee varieties, honeybees pollinate food crops that represent over one-third of the healthy food

items we eat,” Lovse explained. He says the other major importance of quality bee products is the contribution they can make to our overall health. “Bee pollen for the relief of hay fever allergies; Propolis (a resin-based bee product) that enhances our immune systems; wound care treatments using medical-grade honey, the list goes on,” Lovse said. Most startling of all for those not already aware, is that muscle and joint pain can be relieved with bee venom ointments. And if all of that hasn’t yet persuaded you to go exploring, how about knowing that the enticing blend of aromas from honey and beeswax permeates the area and that, for added sensory pleasure, you can indulge in honey-tasting the wide selection offered at the Honey Shoppe. Build a treehouse
Create an outdoor theatre
ways to liven up your backyard
Do you want to upgrade your backyard this summer? If so, here are a few ideas that may inspire you to transform your outdoor space into a family-friendly oasis.
Install a play structure
It doesn’t need to be big or elaborate for your kids to enjoy having their own treehouse. Just make sure it’s safe, stable and weatherproof.
All you need is a TV or a projector and a large sheet to have a movie night under the stars. If you have a large backyard, you can add a few speakers to improve the sound quality. You can also lay out cushions and blankets to create a cosy atmosphere.
Both in-ground and above-ground pools are great for the whole family. They provide hours of fun for the kids, and adults can enjoy a refreshing dip or workout.
Purchase and install a play structure for your kids to climb, swing and slide on. If you’re a skilled DIYer, you can also build your own tire or rope swing. Just make sure everything’s safe.
Put in a swimming pool
To find the materials you need for your backyard project, visit the stores in your area.

How to choose a
kayak PHOTO CINDY GOODMAN/NSN
If you want to purchase a kayak to paddle along lakes, rivers or the ocean, here are some things to consider.
Use There are different types of kayaks available, and each is designed with a specific environment in mind. For this reason, you should first determine where and how you plan to use your boat. Will you be taking long trips on the ocean or short excursions on small lakes and rivers? If you plan on fishing, some kayaks come equipped with additional features such as rod holders and accessory mounts. If you’ll be kayaking with a partner, a tandem model could be a good choice. Seat There are sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks. The sit-in ones have an open cockpit inside the hull, and once you get in, you have to slide your legs under the deck. This helps
keep cold breezes and water out of the boat. Conversely, sit-on-top kayaks have an open cockpit which makes them more stable. This also makes getting on and off them easier. Dimensions The kayak’s length, width and depth will affect its speed and manoeuvrability. Shorter models are easier to carry, but longer ones are faster and have more storage space. The depth and weight of the kayak should suit your build and accommodate the equipment you want to carry. Transportation It’s important to remember that you’ll have to transport your kayak to the water. Rigid kayaks are heaviest but more durable, folding kayaks are lighter but lack speed, and inflatable kayaks are great for casual use but take more time to set up. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, take the time to sit in a few different kayaks. This way you’ll ensure the one you choose is comfortable. SUPPLIED BY NEWSPAPER TOOLBOX | PHOTO GETTYIMAGES

experience Here are seven things you can do this summer: 1. Explore Whey-ah-wichen
2. Visit the Strength and Remembrance pole
If you’re looking for something to do on a cool summer’s afternoon, why not take some time to explore Whey-ah-wichen (Cates Park) in North Vancouver.
PHOTO TAKAYA TOURS
Under the auspices of Creativa International, the mural was a collaboration between California-based artists Nisha K. Sembi and Miguel “Bounce” Perez and local artists Corey Bulpitt and Take5, with support from residents of the North Shore Lookout Shelter and local youth. The mural is hoped to bring people of different cultural backgrounds together and build bridges of respect and understanding. It can be found at 705 West Second St., North Vancouver.
4. Try Indigenous fusion street food
PHOTO BRENT RICHTER/NSN
The area is one of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s most sacred traditional sites. Those who enjoy getting outdoors and connecting with nature can hire a kayak and explore or take a stroll through the park and check out the various Indigenous art pieces along the way on a self-guided tour. Takaya Tours also offers a variety of cultural tours at the site and is hoping to bring back its traditional 35-foot canoe experience this summer, (but they have to be booked). While walking along gravel paths winding through the forest, you’ll find a variety of Indigenous art pieces with stories to share. There are four mosaic medallions near Roche Creek and along the waterfront that honour the importance of salmon as a source of sustenance for the TsleilWaututh people created by Coast Salish artist Zachary George and artist Liz Calvin, according to the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission website. Visitors to the park will also see a magnificent house post titled Story of Creation carved from an oldgrowth western red cedar by George. The pole “depicts the transformation of man through the love and power of the wolf spirit,” explains NVRC on its website. Plus, at each end of the waterfront path are two large boulders engraved with contemporary images honouring Tsleil-Waututh legends passed-down
If you haven’t seen the Word to Your Motherland mural up close it’s worth a visit. “The colourful Word to Your Motherland mural is a unique cross-cultural artistic work that visually fuses hip-hop with the cultures of the participating artists’ individual motherlands, paying respect to the diverse roots of local residents and the cultural hybridity that enriches artistic practice and life within North Shore and Metro Vancouver communities,” explains NVRC on its website.
PHOTO NVRC
Take a moment to reflect and visit the Strength and Remembrance pole. The carved red cedar pole that stands in remembrance of the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls across Canada, the 14 women murdered in the Montreal Massacre and all women who suffer in silence as victims of violence.
3. Take a photo with the Word to your Motherland mural
The pole, which was carved by Squamish Nation artist Sinamkin, Jody Broomfield, is meant to serve as a spiritual beacon for the victims. It is topped with the figure of a woman who represents all those who never came home. She is wrapped in a blanket to symbolize the love and care those gathered still feel for her and she stands atop an eagle, which has carried her home, with courage, to the Creator. The pole can be found at the 100 block of East 14th Street in the City of North Vancouver.
Stop by the award-winning Mr. Bannock food truck for a bite to eat at 442 West First St., North Vancouver, on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There, visitors can try Squamish Nation chef Paul Natrall’s famous bannock (a type of fry bread), be surprised by a rotating fusion of specialty dish, enjoy a handcrafted burger or a classic bannock taco – among other delights.

Whether it’s sampling some tasty Indigenous cuisine from the renowned Mr. Bannock food truck or paddling out to sea at Whey-ah-wichen (Cates Park), there are plenty of First Nations experiences on the North Shore.
through oral history created by Tsleil-Waututh artist Jordan Gallie. Another art piece by Gallie, called New Beginnings, which is inspired by the story of the wolf, can also be spotted on the trail. The trail can be found at the east end of the upper parking lot at Whey-ah-wichen. You can begin your walk in almost any direction. The connecting paths will take you through the forest and along the shoreline.

5. Walk under the Sacred Mountains
Stop by 733 West Third St., North Vancouver, and take a photo with The Spirit of the Sacred Mountain sculpture created by Squamish Nation artist Sinamkin, Jody Broomfield. The stunning four arches each contain the silhouettes of local mountain peaks Hollyburn, the Lions,
Grouse, and Seymour. The sculpture is located near the entrance to The Shore condominium complex in North Vancouver.
6. Wander through the Maplewood Flats
Go on one of the self-guided tours created by Wild Bird Trust of B.C. of the Maplewood Flats Conservation
Area, which is situated within the traditional and unceded territory of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and has been occupied by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. The conservation area is home to a Tsleil-Waututh ancestral village site and fish weir. The mud flats provided food security and were managed for fish, shellfish, waterfowl and other resources. The WBT has been managing the North Shore’s only wild bird sanctuary that has five kilometres of trails since 1993 and works to reflect and acknowledge Tsleil-Waututh culture. Due to COVID-19, many of their usual events and programs have been postponed or moved online, but they usually offer monthly Indigenous Plant Talks and they also have a Coast Salish plant nursery. A number of Indigenous art pieces can also be spotted at the flats, including house posts at the Culture House entry, by master carver Zachary George, an Osprey on the Culture House and etchings on windows by Jordan Gallie, a painting and poem on the east access to the mudflats by Ocean Hyland and a Blue Heron at Osprey Point by James Harry.

7. Learn about Chief Dan George
An exhibition is currently on show about the late Tsleil-Waututh Nation Chief Dan George, Tśētsawanexw and Stalaston. As well as a respected leader, George, who was born in North Vancouver on July 24, 1899, and died on Sept. 23, 1981, at age 82, was a beloved actor, musician, poet, author, and strong advocate for Indigenous rights. The Chief Dan George Exhibit: Actor and Activist, originally developed by MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver, is currently being exhibited by The Wild Bird Trust of British Columbia and is on show at the Maplewood Flats Conservation Area in North Vancouver. It focuses on George’s influence as an advocate for the rights of First Nations peoples in Canada and beyond as well as his career as a television and film actor. The exhibit will be on show until Aug. 29 at Maplewood Flats, at 2649 Dollarton Hwy., North Vancouver. ◆ Elisia Seeber is the North Shore News’ Indigenous and civic affairs reporter.
