Holiday shopping survival guide Do you dread the thought of navigating crowded stores, busy parking lots and long checkout lines? Here are a few tips to make your holiday shopping experience less of an ordeal. Go at the right time There’s no doubt that weekends are a prime time for shopping, especially Saturdays. If possible, head to stores on a weekday or first thing in the morning. Waiting until the last minute will also mean contending with crowds. Keep in mind that many navigation apps allow you to see how busy a particular location is at a given time.
Know what you want To limit the amount of time you spend in stores, make a list and browse local retailers’ websites before you visit in person. This will ensure you know exactly where to go to get the best deals. Of course, you can also stick to shopping online, so long as you leave enough time for your packages to arrive before the holidays.
Avoid hindrances If you’re not a fan of shopping in general, you’ll want to ensure the experience isn’t any more unbearable than it needs to be. Among other things, you should: • Dress in comfortable layers, and wear appropriate walking shoes • Leave your car at home, if possible, to avoid searching for a parking spot • Refrain from shopping with people who are indecisive • Buy heavy items last so you don’t have to lug them around Finally, depending on what would cause you the least amount of stress, you can either plan several short trips or aim to get all your shopping done at once.

It’s always a good idea to get your holiday shopping done early, but this year it's more important than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a microchip shortage and supply chain issues. This means many popular items, including electronics and toys, will be in short supply, according to the Better Business Bureau. Supply shortages, in turn, result in fewer holiday bargains and higher than normal prices. This means that sticking to your budget and scoring all the gifts on your list will be harder than usual. To make a success of your holiday shopping this year despite the challenges, the BBB recommends the following tips. Know what products stores might run out of. Millions of everyday products use microchips to function. Computers, gaming systems, smart appliances, cameras, and toys that feature light, sound, motion, or any kind of tech all use microchips, meaning many manufacturers are already struggling to keep up with the demand for their products. Think through your holiday list and identify musthaves that are impacted by the shortage. When you find a good deal, don't wait to buy. Good deals will be harder to find this year, so if you find a product in stock at a
good price, take advantage right away. Budget your holiday shopping without expecting sales. Supply chain problems mean many retailers have had to pay more than usual for inventory and can't offer the same bargain prices they did last year. In fact, many products that use microchips have already gone up in price, so plan your budget accordingly. This might mean buying fewer presents, or organizing a secret Santa-style gift exchange. Have a backup plan. Because so many household items use microchip technology, some retailers already have products backordered into 2022. Try to stay flexible this year. If you absolutely can't get a gift you had in mind, you may need a Plan B. For example, if the toy you wanted for your kids is not available or too expensive, keep in mind that the present shortages only affect certain types of toys. Plush toys, outdoor toys, and action figures sans electronic features should stay in stock and be reasonably priced this year. BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU

Shop safe and smart It’s an unpredictable year for holiday shopping, with concerns about labour shortages and supply chain disruptions throwing a lot of uncertainty into the marketplace. According to a recent release from the Better Business Bureau, electronics, toys, and other products will be (or already are) in short supply, and retailers are struggling to find staff as the increased shopping season nears. One thing that may not be in short supply, however, is online purchase scams. These scams accounted for nearly 40 per cent of all scams reported to the BBB Scam Tracker in 2020, according to the 2020 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report. Shortages are likely to make purchase scams even more common as desperate shoppers turn to shady websites in hopes of finding this year’s must-have gift. The BBB recommends the following tips for safe, smart shopping this holiday season: Research before you buy. Use BBB.org and shopper reviews to do your homework before paying. If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. The top motivating factor for people who made a purchase then lost money was the price. Don’t shop on price alone. Beware of fake websites. Check the URL, watch for bad grammar, research the age of the domain, and search for
contact information. Make sure the website is secure. Look for the “https” in the URL (the extra s is for “secure”) and a small lock icon on the address bar. Never enter payment or personal information into a website with only “http” – it is NOT secure. Be careful purchasing sought-after products, especially during the holiday season. Scammers like to offer the most popular products for the season at great prices. Beware of making quick purchases while scrolling through social media. Scammers have access to tools they need to learn about your buying behaviors, offering exactly what you want at enticingly low prices. Use secure and traceable transactions and payment methods. According to BBB's research, those who paid with a credit card were less likely to lose money. Be cautious when paying by digital wallet apps, prepaid money cards, or other nontraditional payment methods. Shipment tracking information can be faked. Look closely to make sure it is a legitimate business. Avoid clicking on the tracking link; go to the shipper's website and type in the code to see if it is real. More tips are available at BBB.org/holiday-tips. BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU
