Despite directing the performance for 12 years, and dancing in it years before that, Chan Hon Goh still gets nerves when she hears the tune of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
“I don’t think that will ever disappear,” she said, remarking on the difficulty of the steps and the strict physical regimen she maintained while in performance season as former principal dancer for The National Ballet of Canada
Now that she produces the show, Goh said it’s incredibly rewarding to see the dedication of her cast who are currently
putting in 14 16 hour days, seven days a week to make the final product shine on stage “The number of audience members that come up to say that they’ve made it their family tradition, or that it’s something that creates this warm, little bit of a departure in a world where so many things are beyond our control,” she said “That there is such goodness in The Nutcracker, speaks tenfold to me ”
From Dec 15 to 18, Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker is returning for five live performances at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, for the first time in three years The classic show is coming back in a big
way, with a diverse cast of star dancers from international companies, a strong showing of local performers and a lobby packed with interactive experiences
“When a family has gone all out to enjoy a performance I want to make sure that they just really live it to its fullest, and be able to like take something home that will last.”
Hailing from New York City Ballet is principal dancer Ashley Boulder, who plays the Sugar Plum Fairy Pacific Northwest Ballet’s newly named principal Cecilia Iliesiu takes the part of the Snow Queen Sterling Baca, principal dancer with the Philadelphia Ballet plays The Cavalier. Locally, Vancouver drag performer Symone (Christopher Hunte) is coming back as the larger than life Mother Ginger
The role of Clara will be shared as all children’s roles are by Theepika Sivananthan of Surrey and Poppie Jenke of West Vancouver Poppie, 12, attends Mulgrave School, and will be joined by her younger brother Oscar, 6, who plays one of the little mice
The cast is being highlighted as one of Canada’s most diverse group of Nutcracker performers to date This year’s show features dancers from more than seven countries, speaking eight languages and spanning ages six to 73 The artform of ballet is about showing your best work, Goh said “This means that dancers of all backgrounds and preferences should have
equal opportunity
“The ballet world has recognized that sometimes this has not been the case,” she continues “Speaking on our part, we feel like from the premiere of our Nutcracker, we have featured dancers from diverse racial backgrounds, as well as people from the LGBTQ community”
Goh explained that while her version of The Nutcracker is a traditional version, it does get updated every year, often inspired by the dancers who come in The peppermint dance in Act 2 features more male dancers this year, and unicorns have been added to the snow scene
Also, her team has put in a lot of effort to expand the audience experience beyond the performance itself. Sections of the Queen E lobby will be set up as large scale photo areas, decorated as replicas of some of the stage sets A choir will sing Christmas carols inside
VIP guests can get a get a guided backstage tour after the show. Goh tells ticket holders to come early, especially those with young children, as kids aged four to seven can come an hour before the show to meet some of the characters and even learn some dance steps
“When a family has gone all out to enjoy a performance I want to make sure that they just really live it to its fullest, and be able to like take something home that will last,” Goh said

Whether it’s hiding a Christmas pickle on the tree or throwing back Bucks Fizz the morning of, everyone has differing opinions on what traditions make Christmas important.
Yet while rituals vary from household to household, one yuletide ingredient remains ubiquitous: Christmas, no matter its form, is a time for family.
It is certainly the case for members of the Tsleil Waututh Nation If Deanna George, fifth term serving councillor, were to describe Christmas in a sentence, she would detail it as a day of “gathering together and sharing a meal with both sides of the family”
“ Our whole community went to midnight mass, and as kids we used to race home afterwards to open our presents.”
The relationship between family and festiveness has been embedded within George’s seasonal psyche since childhood Most of her Christmastime memories revolve around visits to her grandparents and, with her grandfather being the youngest of 13, get togethers were more wonderfully cacophonous than they were calm and collected
“Gran loved to take pictures, especially of all their visitors,” she says “Our gran came from a close knit family as well, so the pictures would either be in front of their Christmas tree or in the front yard under a big tree, especially if there was snow”
The clan would sing Christmas carols while a young George would help gran in the kitchen, preparing her famed apple pies for the visitors
Now with grandchildren of her own four, from her four children with husband of 40 years, Bill Thomas George is now the one setting holiday traditions and making memories for the next generation.
For Chief Jen Thomas, family and community are one and the same, especially in the context of Christmas, and childhood memories revolve around events they all attended together
“Our whole community went to midnight mass, and as kids we used to race home afterwards to open our presents,” she remembers, adding how guests would come back to Thomas’s parents house afterwards and would stay till morning after a raucous night of celebration and gift giving
“Our house was always full Christmastime is all about family”
Now Thomas is the one doing the hosting, as the woman at the helm of the upcoming 20th anniversary edition of the Tsleil Waututh Nation Christmas Craft Fair, a bustling event housed at the Nation’s gym, and the annual community Christmas dinner The two are arguably the most hotly anticipated happenings of the festive social calendar, with the dinner “always the biggest turnout” of any of the events
The Nation’s seasonal schedule has come a long way over the decades, George points out “From the early ‘80s to the early ‘90s we held small celebrations out of our administration trailers, and later out of our Gathering Place Cafe.”
Prior to the Nation’s hall burning down in the early ‘80s, its three matriarchs would come together there to host Christmas community celebrations with traditional turkey dinner Presents, she says, would be handed out by the three wise women, “volunteer elves, or Santa Claus ”
The venues and the faces may have transformed over the years, from doting children to grandparents and small gatherings in cafes, to fully fledged fairs, but the core of a Tsleil Waututh Christmas remains steadfast When all the Bucks Fizz and apple pies have been devoured, family is what keeps things truly festive

Two dozen boats will put on a dazzling performance to kick of the holiday season.
Similar to the False Creek ferry ballet, carol ships, and Santa’s Christmas Ships, approximately 24 boats from the Burrard Yacht Club will sail around Vancouver Harbour dressed up in Christmas lights for the club’s annual Festival of Lights boat parade
Last year the parade had only about 15 boats due to increased COVID 19 restrictions
On Dec 3 the boat parade will depart from Burrard Yacht Club at 6 p m and cruise over to Lonsdale Quay in a long, slow loop, docking at around 6:10 p m After a stop at the waterfront, the parade will continue across the water to Coal Harbour before returning to the yacht club.
ALLIE TURNER
The sails of Canada Place are about to get decked out in their holiday best.
From Dec 2 to Jan 2, the outdoor promenade will be transformed by the Port of Vancouver into an avenue of Christmas trees and window displays for Christmas at Canada Place
The bay windows along the Canada Trail will be reimagined as Woodward’s Windows in an homage to classic department store holiday scenes, right down to the familiar (if slightly creepy) animatronic characters and elaborate retro decor
The same space greets guests with decorated Christmas trees and lights, sponsored by community organizations, and ends with a display of wintry lights, including a 15 foot moose affectionately named “Chrismoose ”
The festive feast of nostalgia and lights also has a new addition this year At 6 p m on Dec 2 and 3, a drone show will take over
the skies to tell a holiday story through images and messages.
“We are thrilled to welcome the community back to this holiday tradition on Vancouver’s waterfront. Christmas at Canada Place has become a special tradition for so many across the Lower Mainland,” said the president of the Canada Place Corporation and vice president of real estate at Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, Tom Corsie, in a press release “We are so pleased to be able to bring this celebration back to Canada Place each year”

Stanley Park’s Bright Nights returns, but without its popular Christmas train
BRENDAN KERGIN
The 25th edition of Bright Lights will keep Stanley Park lit this winter, but the much loved Christmas Train won’t be running
The annual event and fundraiser it’s the single largest fundraising event for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund will open on Dec 1 and run until Jan 1 At the event, people will find all sorts of displays, including a vintage fire truck, giant reindeer, and a tunnel of lights However, the miniature train that usually runs through the displays won’t be taking to the tracks this year The train is currently being assessed after an inspection by Technical Safety BC earlier this fall
“ We know this year’s Bright Nights will still bring joy to families and we encourage folks to come and donate for an important cause.”
“This is a cherished tradition for many folks in Vancouver, and although it’s disappointing the trains can’t be a part of this year’s event due to technical challenges, we’re committed to helping create the best possible holiday experience with our partners,” says the park board’s Steve Jackson in a press release.
While the trains won’t be back, the barn at the site will once again be turned into Santa’s workshop; the last time that happened was 2019 There’s also going to be food (with churros, pretzels, popcorn, Chimney Cakes and hot chocolate all on the menu) and live entertainment “Countless firefighters have put in a lot of effort and thought into this year’s set up, and we can’t wait to see how it looks!” Jackson says “We know this year’s Bright Nights
will still bring joy to families and we encourage folks to come and donate for an important cause ”
Firefighters will also be greeting people to Bright Nights Entrance is by donation Since 1998 the park board has donated $2 5 million to the Burn Fund via the Bright Nights events It’ll be closed on Monday, Dec 5, Tuesday, Dec 6, and Sunday, Dec 25

Annual holiday lighting extravaganza Canyon Lights has returned for another year, illuminating the North Vancouver attraction The holly jolly set up sees the forest festooned in festive lighting, and the iconic bridge lit end to end with an ever changing kaleidoscopic display
Seasonal favourites like the winding Cliffwalk with its glittering “Arc de Lumina” light tunnel will return, and guests will once again be able to walk high above the forest floor and view the twinkling lights from every vantage point via Treetops
Adventure’s seven suspended bridges
During the time spent not marvelling or snapping photos, forest visitors can browse the Trading Post gift store for the perfect Secret Santa gift, or take part in the Snowy Owl Prowl scavenger hunt. Hot chocolates and festive songs will be on hand too, as if there needed to be any more incentive. With a limited quantity of tickets available, those hoping to get in on the action should buy in advance or risk feeling like a kid with coal on Christmas morning when they inevitably sell out Tickets are available at capbridge com, with annual passholders required to reserve their time online prior to visiting
As with each year, Canyon Lights will be donating part of the ticket sales to the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, specifically to fire and burn education in schools throughout British Columbia Charitable and festive? Only a true Scrooge could rebuff that offer
