Regardlessofwordchoice,manyinNorth Vancouver’s PembertonHeightsneighbourhoodall reportaloudsound beforethepowerwentoutduringapowerfulrain-andwindstormthathitNov.4.

Allwentdarkforaroundsixorseven hours,ashared experience for thousandsofhomesacrossthe region. Butwhenthelightscameback on,peopleinPemberton Heightsstartednoticingthatnumerousappliancesweren’t reactivating.

Fridges,stoves,microwaves,coffeemakers,icemachines andoverheadexhaustfanswerealldead,leaving residents to comeupwithcreativesolutionsonhow to storegroceries andcookmeals,andbusinessownersscrambling to make quick fixestoservetheircustomers.

AccordingtoDistrictofNorth Vancouver Coun.Herman Mah,whoalsolivesintheneighbourhood, at least33 homes experienceda“massive surge”onNov.4.

Climatechangeisthreateningthe viabilityofoneoftheNorthShore’s treasuredChristmastraditions.

TheDundaraveFestivalofLights,which bringsinhundredsofChristmastreesfor itsForestofMiracles,hasbeentoldby their suppliersthatgoingforward,theirtrees willbesmallerandtwicethepricebecause barelyanyaresurvivingB.C.’sannual droughts,heatwavesandflooding.

“Whenwestartedin2008,wecould literallybringour forestofgrand firsto theDundaravefestival.Theywereour trees.Andwefoundoutthisyearthat,no, they’re reallyhardtocomeby,”saidMichael Markwick,festivalorganizer.“Theseseedlingsdon’tgrowpasttheirthirdyear.They justburnup.”

Fornow,Markwicksaidorganizersare scramblingto figureouthowtheycancontinuetobringtreesinatacostthatwon’t driveoffthesponsorsanddonors who maketheeventpossible.Butinthelonger term,thingsarelookingevenmurkier.

“Ourtreesuppliersaresaying maybe inthenextfiveyears,we mighthavetoget ourtreesfromsouthofthevalley,likefrom Oregon,andIcan’timaginedoingthat,”he said.

Markwicklaunchedthefestivalin2008 afterhisfamily’sfavouriteChristmas tree lotatDundaraveBeachbecame oneofthe casualtiesoftheglobalfinancialcrisis.But Markwicksoughtto reimaginethe lotas a socialenterprisethatwouldbringthecommunitytogether.

“Ithought,whynotdoanartsand culturefestivalthatactuallyallowsus to

areseniorsandyoung adults.”

Butthechangingclimate’simpactson Christmastreesisn’ttheonly newchallengethefestivalisfacing.Thisyear,the non-profitfounditselfshutout of about $150,000ingrantfundingthathelpspayfor theartistsandfestivalcosts,whichinturn multiplieshowmuchLookout will eventually receive.

Atitsheart,thefestivalisintendedto bringpeopletogether,whichiscriticalin today’spoliticalclimate,Markwicksaid, addingthathe’sbeentryingtocommunicatewithMLAsthat“itistotallylegitimate foraperformingartsfestivaltoraisecharitablemoneyfora non-profitthat’sdoing goodinthecommunity.”

Intheshort-term,Markwicksaidhe urgeshisneighbourstovisittheDundarave FestivalofLightswebsiteandpurchase a tree,whichpaystreegrowersandartists, andkeepspeopleout of homelessness.

AtameetingNov 4, councilvotedtomove towardamendingitszoning bylawtoincludeEVinfrastructurestandardsfornew construction.

Ina reporttocouncil, staffsaidtheupdatedpolicy will formalizethedistrict’s existing regulations,bringingitinlinewith othermunicipalitiesincludingCity ofNorth Van, West VanandCityof Vancouver.

Thedistricthasbeenencouraging EV charginginfrastructurefornew developmentsforaround10 years,said sustainabilityplannerAdam Wright.In 2021,thedistrictwentfurther,updatingits policytoencourage rezoningapplicantsto provideEV-readyparkingforall residential andaccessibleparkingspaces,aswell as one-fifthofcommercialandindustrial spaces.

Becausenewprovinciallegislation limitsmunicipalities’ability to controlnew developmentapplicationsonacase-by-case basis, Wrightsaidit’simportanttoupdate thebylawnowsothatEVchargingstandardsautomaticallyapply to futurebuilds.

Theproposedchangewill require EV-readyparkinginall residentialspaces (includinghotels)andin45percentof non-residentialspaces.Allspaces designatedforcarsharemusthaveanoperating EV charger.

Staff recommendedthat theupdated policycomeintoeffectJuly1,2025,because thatgivesenoughtimetothenew requirementstobeincludedinplansforupcoming developments,andfor staff toeffectively communicate thechanges to developers.

Havingcharginginfrastructure innew developments isexpectedto reduce passengervehicleemissionsbyencouragingpeopletobuyEVsandchargethemat homeoratwork, Wrightsaid.

Coun.JordanBacksaidachallenge still existswitholderbuildings thatlackinfrastructurethatsupportsEVcharging.

Wrightsaidthatexistingmulti-family buildingsareakeyareaidentifiedinthe district’s overall EV strategy.

“ThingslikesupportingpublicEV

chargingnexttoornearexistingmulti-familybuildings,orbetterconnecting residents of multi-familybuildingswith rebates, for example,are someoftheactionswe’re pursuing,”he said.

Coun.Herman Mahaskedstaffto explain whythe requirementforEVchargingin non-residentialstallshasgoneupto45 percent,from 20 percentpreviously.

“That’sgenerallyin responsetoone of theinsightsfromtheEVstrategy:Theneed toprovidemore supportforworkplace charging,” Wright replied.

Mah,whomentionedthathehasan electricvehicle,saidthereareothercarbon alternatives in thepipeline–likehydrogen –butalotofstock isbeingputintoEVsin a shortamountoftime.

“Ijusthopethatthereisenoughelectricitydownthe road,”hesaid.“That’s oneconcernthatIhavenowwhenIstart hearingthatwe’re goingtoneedacouple moreSiteCdamstobe abletohave allthe vehicleselectrified.”

MayorMikeLittle expressedconcern thatbuilders couldcomplywiththe regulationswithoutprovidingfunctionalEV charging,noting onelocaldevelopmentthat includedEVchargingstationsthatweren’t wired.

“Howprescriptivedoweneedtobe tomakesurethatdoesn’thappenagain?” Littleasked.

Wrightsaidthatwhentheyfirstintroducedthepolicy 10 yearsago,therewas a greatervarietyofchargingtechnologies.

“Therewasalotoftechnologiesthat were ableto meet thatstandard,”hesaid. “However,nowit’sconvergingaroundaparticulartypeoftechnology.Soratherthan providingelectricaloutlet,itwould mostly be ajunctionbox,whichwouldenable most typesofEV chargers.”

Suspectthwartedstealingcheese worth $13K

North VancouverRCMPare lookingforasuspect theysaytriedto steal almost$13,000worthofcheese.

Theincidenthappened more than a monthago.OnSept.29,atabout 4p.m.,anofficeronpatrolcame acrossacartfullof cheeseinthe alleybehindWholeFoodsinCentral Lonsdale.Thesituationsmelledoff, likearipeLimburger,andofficers wentinforacloserlook. Around that time,asuspiciousmanappearedout of theWholeFoodsstairwellwho, uponseeingtheofficers,promptly cheesedit.

Theinvestigation revealedthe manhadbrokenintothe Whole Foodsstorageareaandwasinthe processofmakingoffwith thefermenteddairygoods,whichstaffsaid hadastreetvalueof$12,800.Because they’dbeen removedfromthestore’s fridges,theycould no longerbesold.

Iama Lynn Valley residentwhowasbear sprayedbyyoungpeopleafterchallengingthemtostopshooting theirfireworks directlyatbuildings,andatmepersonally. TheRCMPattendingsaidthiswasthethird suchaerosol-based assaultoftheevening.

Iamaskingparentstositwiththeir childrenand look attheirphotosandsocial mediacommunications.Itisour responsibilitytotalkto ourkids andlet themknow theiractionsmatter.

Doyouknowwhereyourkidwasand whotheywerewith?I’mgladyoutrust them.Letthemsharethestoryoftheir adventureandindependence.

ItwasHalloween,sure,butat11p.m. ononeshortloopinmyneighbourhood, I interacted with threegroupsengagedin illegalactivity.

Gettingsprayedwasthe resultofinsistingateenstopandhavea conversation afterfiring his roman-candle-stylefirework acrossthestreetintoaMountain Highway townhouseand ontothe Lynn Valley Church,beforefiringdirectlyatmedown HaroldStreet.

whosprayedmeweretheonlyaberrant onesintheirgroup.Butthat’sthething: groups.

Parents,I’msureyourchildwaslikely makinggoodchoicesonHalloween,but thereweremany, manygroupsoutthere. Ichallengeyoutodemonstrateyoucare abouttheirchoicesandfriendships.

Duringmostof that time, Ihavealso beenprivilegedtoservemorebroadlyas amemberofthe federal Cabinet –first as MinisterofFisheries,Oceansandthe Canadian CoastGuard, thenasMinister ofEnvironmentand ClimateChange and currentlyas Canada’sMinisterofEnergy andNaturalResources.

Imention thisin thecontextof the breadthofopportunitythesejobs haveprovided to servenotonlyNorth Vancouver –mypriority- butalsoour provinceandourcountry.

Lastmonthin thisspace, Isharedan “MPImpact ReportCard”focused locallyon theNorthShore.The intentwas to providevisibility and accountability on somekeyresultsofmy efforts on yourbehalf.

Thismonth,in asimilarspirit, Ioffera secondreportcard focused ontheimpact ofmyworkat theprovinciallevel.

Butduetothedamaged equipment andtheirnewlocation,providing care to patients–whoareprimarilyseniors–has comewithlimitations,shesaid.

“Wecannotseethevolume of people thatwewereseeingbefore,sowecan’thelp asmanypeopleinoneday,whichisvery frustrating,”Fischsaid.“I’musedtohaving fouroffices,andnowIhaveonelarge room thatI’mhelpingpeoplein.”

Fischhasseendailyappointmentscut inhalf,fromnearly40peopleadaytoan averageof15to20.

Findinganewlocationforherbusiness hasbeenoneofthebiggestchallengesdue tolimitedoptionsof retailspace,shesaid.

There’snopowerintheprevious building,andwiththenewsthatitcould takeanywherefromeightmonthstoayear beforethepowercomesbackon,Fischsaid sheneededtoterminateherleaseandwill try tofindanewlocation.

“Iunfortunatelycan’tenvisagehowmany peoplemaynotcomebackbecause of this orlackofavailability,”shesaid.“Idon’t knowhowlongit’sgoingtotakemeto find a newpremises.”

Theaudiologisthasseenalotofchange throughouthercareerthepastthree decades,butnothinglikethis,shesaid. Despitethe flooding,Fischisstaying optimisticmovingforward.

Underthisnewpathway, fromOct.28,2024,toOct. 27,2025,familymembersof victims whowereCanadian citizens,permanent residents,orindividuals approvedtoworkorstudy inCanadacannowapplyfor permanent residency.

ThevictimsoftheFlight PS752 crasharehonouredat a memorialgatheringinNorth VancouverinJanuaryof2024, markingthe fourthanniversaryofthetragedy.

North VancouverMPJonathan Wilkinson saidthatthisinitiativeaimstoensure affectedfamilies,includingspousesand relativesofCanadian residents,haveaccess tothesupporttheyneed. WilkinsonemphasizedthatthisprogramispartofCanada’s continuedsupportforthoseaffected by the PS752tragedy.

It’safeelingalmosteveryonehas knownatleastonce.Somethingfeels justalittlebitoff,andpanicsetsin whenitdawns onyou yourringis gone.

It’sascenarioChris Turnerhasdedicatedhislaterlifeto rectifying,wherever hecan.TheNorth Vancouver resident foundedRingFinders,aglobalnetworkof metaldetectorenthusiaststhathaslanded manythousandsofringsback on thefingers wheretheybelong.

Attheageof12, Turnergotajobat a chickenfarmtopayforhisfirst metaldetector.Inthe50yearssince,he’shadcareers asagoalkeeper in professionalandinternationalsoccer,andinTVandfilmproduction. Butnojobhasgivenhimthesamerushthat comesfromhandingsomeonebackatreasureditemthey thoughtwas goneforgood.

“Iwasaskedtohelppeople.Isawhow muchjoyitbroughttopeoplewhenIwas ableto recoverwhattheylost,”hesaid. “ThebestthingI’veeverdoneinmylifeis whatI’mdoingnow.”

Losers,weepers

Ringsgomissingatdifferenttimes of yearfordifferent reasons.Inthefall,raking leaveswithwethandsisoftentheculprit. Inwintertime,it’sthrowingasnowball.In thesummermonths,thestory ofthelost ringoftenstartswithsomeoneputting on sunblock or goingforaswim.

Evenifalostringiscoveredbyinsurance,nonewringwilleverbeanadequate replacement, Turnerhasfound,because thenewonedoesn’tcomeimbuedwiththe samepersonalhistory.

“Everysingleringhasabeautifulstory. Everyonedoes,”hesaid.“I’vefoundthat it’soneofthesinglemostimportantthings weown–thatringthatwasgivento us by alovedone–andIjustlovebeingableto

reconnectpeoplewiththesestories.”

Finders,keepers

Fortheretobeanychanceof finding a lostring,thereneedstobegoodinteltogo onfollowedbysomedetectivework.Alotof times,it’s Turner’sseasonedadviceoverthe phonethatleadstotheringturningup,no needforametaldetectoratall.

“You’vegottolistentothestory. You’ve

gottoaskalotof questions,” he said.“If they’recertainthey’velostitinacertain area,Iwill find it.Andit doesn’t matterif it’slostforaweekor30years.Ifit’sonyour property,it’sstillgoingto be there.”

Whenaring reallycan’t be found, Turner said he finds his clientsatleastcomeaway withafeelingofclosure,nolongeragonizing overthe possibilitythatit may be nearby buteludingthem,justoutof reach.

Whenitcomestocompensation, Turner chargesagasfeefortravelling but apart fromthat,it’swhatever reward theclient wantstooffer.

“I’ve done itfora homemadeloafof banana bread.I’ve madeasmuchas$2,000 fora reward.It’sjustwhatever peoplefeel it’sworthtothemandwhattheycanafford. Everybody’s different,” he said.“Most people aregenerous.”

Earlierthisyear, Turnernotched his 500th find since he launchedRingFinders. It’s hard topickafavouritestoryamong them,hesaid.

InOctober2020,HollywoodactorJohn Cryerlosthiswedding ringwhileonthe Stanley Parkseawall.Whilemakinga post onCraigslist’slost-and-found page, he came upontheRingFinder’sadandcalledin Turnerfor help.Itlookedlikeit might be one ofthose“closure”cases, but Turnerlocated theringamidaclump of grassand mud. Anothercasethatsticksoutin his mind issearchinga propertyin Port Moodyforan engineeringringthathad belongedtoa man whowaskilledina motorvehiclecollision. Theman’s fiancébadlywantedto havethat piece ofhimback.

ORECfounderBrianWhitegave a presentationofthehistoryofthe firsttwodecades oftheprogram.

Whitefoundedtheprogramin1970, whentheearlydaysoftheprogramwere largetripssuchas10-dayexpeditionsin CathedralProvincialParkinKeremeos.

Dujmovicwasoneofthepeoplewho helpedorganizethe reunionalongside CapilanoinstructorRoyJantzen.

Morethan$4,000wascollectedforthe ORECalumnibursaryandsilentauction withproceedssupportingcurrentstudents infinancialneed.

“Itwasjust reallyawesometoseeso manypeopleconnectandunite overone

thingweallhadincommon,”Dujmovicsaid. BornandraisedinMapleRidge, Dujmovicwasalwayssurroundedbynature. Herinterestsparkedat 14yearsold when shebeganwatching“thruhiking”videos on YouTube.

InGrade 10, shetookanoutdooreducationcourse,wheretheclasswouldgoon Fridayfieldtrips relatingtowhattheytalked aboutthatweek.

Achangingindustry

Jantzen,whohasbeenaCapilano Universityinstructorinthetourismand outdoor recreationfacultyfor24years,has seenahugechangeintheoutdoor recreationindustry.

WhenJantzentooktheORECprogram from1989to1991,therewerefew opportunities, leadinggraduatesto create theirown businesses, he said.

Jantzenlaunchedhisown nature tour businessinWhitehorseandstillrunsit today.In1999,hewasaskedtoleadoneof theORECprogramcoursesandhastaught eversince.

Butnow,Jantzenhasseenmorecareer opportunitiesflourishoverthelasttwo decades.

“There’sjustsomanydifferent

opportunitiesthatyoucouldgoto,”hesaid. “Nowyouseepeopleinadventuretherapy, morewithparks,outdoor recreationcamps, rescuetechnicians,thosethings.”

“Typically,whenyoulookatoutdoor recreation,youthink‘Oh,thisisfun.Thisis playingintheoutdoors.’Buttheseriousness ofitisthatifyouarenotprofessionaland you’renotawareofthesafetyissues,things couldgothewrong way.”

Withtheenvironmentalissuesweare seeingaroundthe world,Jantzensaidhe thinksstudentswillhaveademandinlearningabouthowtobemore environmentally friendlyintheindustry.

The core valuesofthe programJantzen saidaregraduatesbeingchange-makers, buildingasenseofcommunity,butalso beingprofessionalandseesthatcontinuing.

“They reallyareloversofthenatural world,”Jantzensaid.“We’remakingsure thatstudentsknow whentheyleavethis program,theyareleadingpeople.”

“Moethoughtitwasa goodidea,sohe askedmeandChrisandStevewhetherwe wantedtodosomethinglikethat,and we endedupputtingtogetherastage show,” Northeysaid.

Thefourwould playeach other’s hits, switchinginstrumentsalongthe way, and thentalkinbetweensongs.They alsohad archivalcontentthatwouldplayon screen. Thatwastheband’sfirstpresentation, whichtheytookonanine-citytour.

“Butthewaywekickedthe wholething off wasjusttogooutanddoashow without anyofthatstuff,”Northeysaid.“Afterthat littletourwithallthebellsand whistles,we thoughtthatfirstthingwedidwherewe justpressedgowasfuntoo.

“Sowestarteddoinggigsthatway, and it’s remainedthatway, wherewejustplay

the stuffthat peopleknowusfor,”hesaid. “It’slike a ’90smixtapeforalotofpeople.”

Northey describestheshowasjoyfulfor boththeaudienceandtheband.

“Alotoftimes,peopleshowupnot knowingexactlywhattoexpect,”he said. “Itjuststartsandit’sfamiliarsongafter familiarsong.

“We respectwhateachother hasdone andwe’refansofeachother, soit’ssuper fun.Andtheaudiencefeedsonthat,” Northeysaid. “Andwe’re prettyirreverent aspeople. We’renottooserious.”

“Andwejustplayedsobadinthatgamein Victorialast year,”Symonssaid.

Thatsingle0-2losswasawake-upcalltothesquadof perfectionists.

Thisseasonwasallabout routineandhabit,thecoach said,withmajorfocus beingputintopreppingforeach individualteaminupcominggames.

SundesaidthatcoachSymonsison“anotherlevel”when itcomestotactics.

“He reallydialsinon video …that’skindofbeenabig thinghefocuseson,”shesaid.“We’regoingtobethemost preparedteam.”

Theplayers reallyfocusonwhateachcandoindividually,andwhatformationsworkbest againsteachopposing team.

“It’snotlike we just showup andplay,”Sundesaid.

But Symons’s coachingapproachislessabout roleson thefieldandmoreabouttheplayersthemselves.

“Abigthinghetalksaboutistheperson,andhe recruits basedonhavinggoodpeopleintheenvironment,”Sunde said.“Thatalsocontributestooursuccessbecauseeveryone’ssocloseandsupportingeach other,even thoughour rosterisprettybigandobviouslynoteveryonegetstoplay.”

Thatattentionto recruitingledtosomestandout rookie performances,includingSiennaGibson,whowasnamed MVPatnationals.

“Consistently,the rookiesare gettingacknowledgment, andIthinkthat’satestamenttowhohebringsinandthe depthoftheteamaswell,”Sundesaid.

Inaninterview,Symonsacknowledgedthathiscoachof theyearawardswere“great recognition,”butdidn’tdwell muchonthetopicotherthantoputshineonhisteam,and alltheothergreatcoachesatthe nationalevent.

Symonshasalonghistorywithwomen’ssoccer,much ofitontheNorthShore.Priortohisnineyearswiththe Thunderbirds,hewastheformertechnicaldirectorofthe NorthShoreGirlsSoccerClub,andservedasheadinstructor atthesocceracademyrunoutof West Vancouver’s SentinelSecondary.

Whilethesciencestudent’scurrent plan istogetintomedschool,she’salsoconsideringplayingsoccerprofessionally.

She’s been givenfoodforthoughtfrom severalopportunitiesthrough theUBC program,like being partofa$1-millionevent calledTheSoccer Tournamentearlierthis year.She’llcompeteagaininthe match next June.

ThatmeantDiaz had tospendthousandsof dollarsin emergency repairstokeep herbusinessrunning,while runninggroceries back andforthfrom herhome so they wouldn’t perish.Economically,theimpacton herbusiness hasbeen“huge,”shesaid.

Asforinsurance,Diaz’ssituationiscomplicated because she rentsthespace.BCHydro willonlygothroughthepropertyowner,who hasbeen onvacation.SoDiazwill haveto waituntilthe buildingowner returnsinthecoming days to figureoutwhatwill be covered by insurance,andwhatwill comeoutof herpocket.

Meanwhile,shesaidthatcustomershave been understandingthatsomeofthe menuitems haven’t been onoffer, andhave been supportive of theshop.

“Theytoldme,ifweneedanything,theyarehereto help,”Diazsaid.“It’sgoodsupport.”

During his48yearslivinginthearea,ElwinEvans said he’dneverexperiencedanythinglikethis before.Evans said his dishwasher,cooktopandevengasfurnace stopped workingafterthestorm.The homeowner said he’s askedBC Hydro forinformationthat he needstogiveto his insurance company.

“SofarI haven’theardbackfromBCHydro,”hesaid “Thingsarenot progressingatalluntil my insurancecompanygetsinformationindicatingthatindeedtherewas a powersurgeinourarea,especiallyin my house.”

DarleneAnderson,anotherlongtime resident, said she’s facingupwards of$8,000in repairsto her homeappliances, andshe’s heardsimilarstoriesfromherneighbours.While she’susedtofairly regular power outagesintheforested community,service hadbeen steady sincethenewCapilano SubstationwasenergizedinApril.

“Somethingwent reallywrong,”Anderson said.

Mahalsowonderedifthenewsubstationcouldbe a factor.

“Couldthisincreasedcapacityhaveanythingto do with themassivesurgethatwasexperiencedbythe homes in PembertonHeights?”heasked.

ButBCHydro spokespersonMoraScott saidthe substationisnot relatedtotheoutageeventonNov.4.Staffwith theutility providerlookedintowhatdamagedthetransformerneartheaffectedproperties.

“Asforthecause,itappearsitwastreescontactingour lines,”Scottsaid.“Toconfirm,itwasnot relatedtothenew substation.”

ScottsaidBCHydro hasheard from ahandfulofcustomersin PembertonHeightsthroughits claims process.“Our claimsteamisactivelyworkingwiththem,”Scott said.

Diazsaidshewantstoseeinvestmentto stopincidents likethis happeninginthefuture.

“Theyshouldinvestinneighbourhoodslikethisone,that havealotoftrees,inputtingallthecablesundergroundso thatit doesn’thappenagain,”Diazsaid.

Never one totakelife’s obstacles too seriously, Garryhada resilient and optmistic outlookandwasalways availabletolenda helping hand.

He issurvivedbyhisformerspouseSheila; children Stacy (Greg)andCurtis(Amber);grandchildren BlakeandRyan;sistersSandra, Jennifer, Cynthia (Eric), andMelissa(Tony);thirteen niecesand nephews;sister-in-law Donna; brothers-in-law Ken, Jim and Warren.Predeceased by his parents Arnold andFlorence;sister Shelley;brother Ray; andbrother-in-lawBob.

Garry found life’s richnessin thesocialconnections he made,andhewillbegreatly missed byalong list of very close friends andextended family.

A celebrationofGarry’slifewill be heldin the Springof 2025.

Sharonwas born in Vancouver atGraceHospital and shortlyafterthe family moved to North Vancouverwhereshewas raised and stayed a lifelong resident.She graduated fromCarson Graham SecondarySchool and CapilanoCollege Sharonworked for years asabookkeeper at WindsorPlywood, theninretail atthe Bay in West Vancouver and Shoppers Drug MartEsplanade. Sharonenjoyed traveling to Alaska,Britain and Ireland, South AfricaandAustralia. Shewas an avid reader,enjoyed going tothemovies,knitting, quiltingand singing. Shewas a season ticket holderforthe Vancouver Opera.

She is survived by hersiblingsLori, Sue (Martin), Dave (Jane), manynieces and nephews,extended family,herlongtimefriend Sylvia and others.

She ispredeceased by her parentsIrene Eyford (2009),Frank Eyford(2017),andbrotherinlaw PeterChapman (2017).

Withgreat sadness, we announcethe passing of Jean(John) Farkas on October 30 afterabrief illness. He’ll be sorely missed by his wife, Ginny; sons,Paul and Dan; as well asPaul’s partner, Tamryn; grandchildren,Ronan andMakenna; and Daniel’s partner, Brad.

John was born inBasse-Yutz, France,in1937. He served in the French military for3years. John immigrated toCanadainthe1960s. Eventually,he met Ginny in 1971, and theywere married for51 lovelyyears. John residedonthe North Shorefor 30years, then movedtoSechelt.

Whileliving inLondon,she met CanadianBruceH.McColl.ElisabethandBruce married inVancouver,BC,in1963,andsheworked atSt.Paul’s Hospital untilshe became amotherto children Innes,Alastair, andFiona.Elisabethand BrucesettledinWestVancouver,wheretheylived foralmost30 years. Together,theywereknown fortheiroutrageousdinnerparties,raucousgames ofbridge,worldtravels,and welcomingmanyinto theirwarmand offbeathome.In1978,Elisabeth formedFitnessWestwithseveralfriends,where theytaught aerobicsina West Vancouverchurch− the sametime, Elisabeth’spassionforlong− distancerunningignited.Sheranmanyroadraces andmarathons,includingoneyearwhensheran four −Vancouver,Honolulu,NapaValley,and London.Shealsostarteda gift basketbusiness,"A Basketful,"inthe 80swhen she gottocombine her love of shoppingand curating finethingsto make beautiful baskets for customers.Aftermovingwith BrucetoBrunswickBeach,she openedtheir houseas abedandbreakfastuntilBrucebecame illwithcanceranddiedin1991.As awidow, ElisabethmovedtodowntownVancouver,where sheworkedinanart gallery, tookupphotography, andcontinuedworldtravels.In2001, she built LongfieldCottage, agorgeoushouseonSaturna Island andlivedthereuntil2014,singinginthechoir, sharing herphotography,hostingartists,and volunteeringatthelibrary. Elisabeth movedbackto WestVancouver,walking theseawalldailyand reunitingwiththe communitysheleftyearsbefore. In 2019, she wasdiagnosedwithAlzheimer’s Diseaseandmovedtoanassisted−livingresidence in Calgary tobenearherdaughterwhenshecould no longer live independently.InCalgary, she enjoyed amultitudeofcoffeeshops,ginger cookies,granddaughterEmma’sJackRussell terrier,musicshows, andtimewithFiona,Pete, Emma,and Finn.Elisabethissurvived by sons Innes(Mary)and Alastair(Nathalie); daughterFiona (Pete);sister JillCormack(Sandy);grandchildren Eva,Luc,Emma, andFinn;numerousniecesand nephews;and anamazinggroupofthe most incrediblefriends.Uptothe end, shelivedherlife withflare,pinklipstick, opinions,andspunk.She wasa force.

Karen wasborninEdmonton, Alberta, toRolf andOlive(Nourse) Vollanand waspredeceased by both of them as wellasherbrother Maynard. Leaving behindtoloveand rememberherareher daughter Morgan Mallett(CoreyBrennan), several cousins,nieces,nephewsand manylifelong friends.

Karen was ateacherinEdmontonand then owned and ran hertropicalplant store,Plant West. After relocatingtoWest Vancouver,she taught school andwasawardedthe Canadian Environmental AchievementAwardin 1991 forherenvironmental activism with W.H.E.N.(Worldwide Home Environmental Network), ofwhich she wasa founding member.

Karen wasfeisty,smart,loved animalsandwasan incrediblycaring person. Shewasanimmensely ovingandsupportive motherand wilbesorely missed. Her legacy of love andhelping others will iveoninall of those whose lives she touched.

Karen’s Celebration of Life willbeheldonSaturday, November 23,from 2-6pm(speeches willstart at 3pm) at theMusic Box in West Vancouver (1564 ArgyleAvenue).The eventisdrop-in,andbright attireisencouraged.

JessicaHarrisisthecommunityliving counsellorfor TheSummit, arecreation andeducationprogramforfolkswhohave disabilitiesandneurodivergence.Harris helpedcreatethemarkettoshowcasethe skillsofthese entrepreneursandtocreate equalopportunities.

“Ithinkit’sjustpromotinginclusivityand allowingequalopportunityforallfolksin ourcommunitytohave aplacetoselltheir creations,”Harrissaid. “Andwehavesome reallytalentedfolks,sowe’reexcitedtoallow themtohavethatplatform.”

TheSummitispartofIntellectual Disabilities Society North &West Vancouver,anonprofitorganizationthatsupports people withdisabilitiesandneurodiversityacross the NorthShoretodevelopskillsforactive, independentinvolvementinthecommunity.

Thefacilityisunique becauseitis nonreferral,meaninganyonecanjoinandthey don’thavetogothroughCommunityLiving BCorreceivegovernmentfundingtoaccess theprograms,Harrissaid.

A grantfromthe Districtof North Vancouver helpedthenon-profitgettheannualwinter marketupandrunning.

Harrissaidthemarketisopentoanyone, butpriorityisgiventothosewhoidentify as having adisability.Justunderhalfofvendors identifywithhaving adisability,shesaid.

Peoplewill be bringingin avarietyof hand-madeitemssuchas pottery,jewelry, candles,bath bombs,festivedecorationslike Christmascardsandevendogtreats,Harris said.

“Ithinkthisisgoingto be ourbiggestwinter market,”she said. “Wehostedthemona

smallerscaleinpreviousyears. Ibelievewe havemorevendorsthanwe’vehadinthe past.”

Folkslivingwithdisabilitiesoftenfacestigma thatcansometimesleadtolessaccessto opportunities.TheInclusive Workplaceand SupplyCouncil ofCanadasaystoooften peopleunderestimatedisabledindividuals anddonotgive them achancetoshow their skillsandabilities.

StatisticsCanadadatashows peoplewith disabilitiesowningtheirownbusinesshas grownovertheyears. In2022,1 4per cent ofprivate-sector businessesweremajorityownedby personswithdisabilities,whereas in2023thatnumberincreasedto2 2per cent.

Creatingthesebusinesses canhelp people thrive,especiallyif traditionalworkinghours suchas a9to5don’tworkfor them.
