Thefacilityisunique becauseitis nonreferral,meaninganyonecanjoinandthey don’thavetogothroughCommunityLiving BCorreceivegovernmentfundingtoaccess theprograms,Harrissaid.
A grantfromthe Districtof North Vancouver helpedthenon-profitgettheannualwinter marketupandrunning.
Harrissaidthemarketisopentoanyone, butpriorityisgiventothosewhoidentify as having adisability.Justunderhalfofvendors identifywithhaving adisability,shesaid.
Peoplewill be bringingin avarietyof hand-madeitemssuchas pottery,jewelry, candles,bath bombs,festivedecorationslike Christmascardsandevendogtreats,Harris said.
“Ithinkthisisgoingto be ourbiggestwinter market,”she said. “Wehostedthemona
smallerscaleinpreviousyears. Ibelievewe havemorevendorsthanwe’vehadinthe past.”
Folkslivingwithdisabilitiesoftenfacestigma thatcansometimesleadtolessaccessto opportunities.TheInclusive Workplaceand SupplyCouncil ofCanadasaystoooften peopleunderestimatedisabledindividuals anddonotgive them achancetoshow their skillsandabilities.
StatisticsCanadadatashows peoplewith disabilitiesowningtheirownbusinesshas grownovertheyears. In2022,1 4per cent ofprivate-sector businessesweremajorityownedby personswithdisabilities,whereas in2023thatnumberincreasedto2 2per cent.
Creatingthesebusinesses canhelp people thrive,especiallyif traditionalworkinghours suchas a9to5don’tworkfor them.
