Dementia-ABLE: Living well beyond diagnosis “You have dementia” are words most people fear. And yet, statisticallyspeaking over 25,000 Canadians will hear those words each year. What exactly do those words mean? Will life change, and if so, how? What can be done to ensure each day is filled with love, joy, purpose and meaning? What role do we all play to support those living with dementia? This talk will provide the answers to all these questions and more. In it you will learn the key, everyday ingredients for a dementia-friendly recipe. A recipe that includes ingredients such as ‘educate’, ‘empower’, and ‘engage’ as opposed to ‘fear’, ‘shame’ and ‘lonely’. Become Dementia-ABLE and live well beyond the diagnosis. COGNITIVE

Too often older age is accompanied with a decline in physical and cognitive health, muscle strength and mobility. Specifically, a loss in muscle strength and mobility increases one’s risk for a fall which can have devastating consequences in older adults. Fortunately, we have some control over this. In fact, research shows that 50 per cent of falls can be reduced through strength & balance training. Join us to learn more about how you can become more active, what exercises are most effective to promote health and physical ability, and how you can reduce your risk of falling. Maureen MacDonald | Nidus Personal Planning Resource Centre and Registry Representation Agreements and their importance as we age
FINANCIAL
A Representation Agreement is an important legal document that seniors are using to plan for the future—in case of incapacity and for end-of-life. It covers decisions about where you want to live and what medical treatments you do or do not want. It can also cover routine finances. Nidus is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides free information about Representation Agreements. You do not need a legal professional to make a Representation Agreement and Nidus has a free self-help kit that you can use. Nidus also operates a Registry for storing a copy of your Agreement and making it available to others when needed—for example, if you cannot speak for yourself. Making and registering a Representation Agreement gives you a say about your quality-of-life wishes, eases the burden on family and friends, and lets you avoid the need for government involvement in your private and personal affairs. Location: Lily Lee Spirit Room, WVCC Time: 12 – 1 p.m.

Unfortunately, fraudsters continue to target seniors. The BC Securities Commission found that 1 in 8 British Columbians over 50 is vulnerable to investment fraud. If you have money to invest, you are potentially vulnerable to fraud. Come learn about the most common scams and how to spot the warning signs. Location: Activity Room, SAC Time: 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
