DARK & STORMY
Smoky eyes paired with a rich lip may not be for the faint of heart, but it’s hella sexy. A satiny finish, rather than matte, keeps the effect sultry, not sinister. “You need confidence to pull this off. It takes some getting used to, but once you go bold it’s hard to go back,” says makeup artist Colby Smith.

Cherry bomb red is classic, but vibrant pink feels fresh and flirty. You want the lip to appear shiny, not wet, so “stick to creamy finishes,” says makeup artist Monifa Mortis. Balance it with well-groomed but not overdone brows. Use a tinted brow gel that’s one or two shades lighter than your natural brow color. “The key to natural-looking brows is being able to see skin in between the hairs,” says Mortis. w

BLUE CRUSH
Navy eyeliner is stunning and a nice break from black. “It also gives you flexibility to be imperfect, because it’s not reading as vividly as black,” says Mortis. It’s easiest to work with a brush and a gel liner in a pot so you can control the amount, unlike a liquid liner (where the brush is a bit more pliant, making it harder to nail a sharp angle). Trace a line just above your lashes, then place a business card at the corner of your eye. Lift the card to where you’d want your lashes to wing out. Draw the wing along the edge of the card. To keep the focus on the eyes, go soft on cheeks and lips. The salmon-y pink matte lipstick used here works best if you neutralize your natural lip color with a flesh-tone shade first to cancel out the undertones.
