Community Collaboration: “Sourcing” The Nova Scotia SPCA & Pets Unlimited Presented by: Kristin Williams
History • In the summer of 2011, the SPCA made an offer to Pets Unlimited to resolve sourcing issues that were negatively affecting market results and the public profile of the retailer • In September 2011, a sponsorship agreement was signed that made the SPCA the exclusive source of animals for Pets Unlimited stores throughout Nova Scotia
SPCA Conditions • The adoption process at retail stores is the same as it is at SPCA branches • The animals provided are cats only because of the suitability and limitations of the retail environment • Retail staff are trained by SPCA staff and adhere to the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters • All retail locations are inspected and audited regularly by the SPCA
The Results for Pets Unlimited 1. Immediate improved profile within a highly competitive marketplace 2. Ethical sourcing 3. Reliable, healthy, vetted animals 4. Increased store traffic and revenues 5. Elimination of poor media coverage 6. Brand equity through a strong philanthropic connection (enhanced social responsibility)
The Results for the SPCA 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
