President’s Note NSS SRCC works continuously to bring out the best in the society and make the world a better place. Actions do matter but we also believe that it is important that we bring change through our opinions and words. I am proud to lead such a team which tries to achieve these goals through every possible way. The theme of this newsletter is „Safar‟ which points out an important lesson that it is the journey which matters and not the destination. I believe this newsletter will remind us again how important it is to live and enjoy every moment.
-Adarsh Kariwal
Vice-President’s Note The one word I can use to describe NSS is 'perennial growth'. Every single day, there is an inquisitiveness to question the issues our society is combating, to think of solutions which can be implemented to make the society a much better place. „Safar‟ is an initiative to encourage young exuberant minds to pen their opinions towards their perception of a better community. Ranting on the problems and issues won‟t work, we need to break through the conventional norms and work relentlessly if we want to bring a change. Days may come and days may go; But the zeal shouldn‟t die, To develop and grow.

Transition -Shiwani Sitting on the edge of her life, it was hard for her to decide. For she faced the callousness which was not easy to summarise. Despite failing in many attempts, she always had the courage to rise. She is not a born prodigy, But for you she can be a perfect analogy. She turned harsh because she wanted her feelings to camouflage, But people pestered her, ergo, she turned outrage. She had nowhere to go, she had no one to hear, Gradually her emotions had to disappear. The metamorphism she was undergoing, Turned the sedimentary her into granite moping. The process did not end there, it turned volte-face. Because life is not an easy play instead it‟s a tough race. The stiffness in her, turned brittle, The brittleness in her is now subtle. Even the time was hard on her, Still she never dared to surrender. For she was embraced by the beautiful touch of „love‟, Which emancipated her to stand all falls and never unrove.
A Long Journey Indeed -Rahul Kansal On 22th August, 2017, the Supreme Court of India passed the historical decision of banning the practice of Triple Talaq. India is a developing country, which has immensely progressed in the current scenario, witnessing healthy competition between men and women in almost every field. However, when we talk of gender equality, the Muslim community lags behind. As governed under the 'Shariyat Law‟, husbands can give divorce to their wife just my uttering three words "Talaq! Talaq! Talaq!” Even today, the Muslim women fall victims to the unethical practice of 'Halala’ wherein husbands divorce their wives via social media platforms of Facebook and WhatsApp. Women have long been living in the terror of mistake which might lead to their divorce in return. Reports reveal that after divorce, their family does not support them and they are left alone to the harshness of the surrounding. Triple Talaq is banned in all 55 Muslim nations and so a similar concern for its eradication was raised in India as well. With all this going on, a panel of 5 judges was constituted, all symbolizing different religions to ensure that the judgment was completely unbiased. Post detailed discussion and review of the stated argument, Article 25 was taken into consideration and finally the decision came with a 3:2 majority banning Triple Talaq.

The Haunting Love - Urja Raheja Loved, Loved with the benign beauty of heart, Blushed, Blushed with that rosy shade of pink, Hugged, Hugged with the subtlety of emotions, Cared, Cared with the tenderness of soul, Rushed, Rushed with the yearn of delight, Confessed, Confessed to seize him forever. From anticipation to rejection, From misconceptions to reality, From flattery to actuality, This journey of love, Was indeed beautiful, Pleasing to cherish, And haunting to experience!
A Journey of Thoughts - Aadhira Anbazhagan Robert Frost quoted, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” These captivating words by the „A song of ice and fire‟ writer explain how poets capture their emotions in a piece of paper. It makes us wonder how their thinking process differs from us. Every thought that pops up in our head has a source that is both exhilarating and dangerous. It was a single thought that made Isaac Newton discover gravity and Sylvia Plath commit suicide! As a human being, we tend to lean more towards negativity than positivity. A single negative thought, no matter how trivial it is, festers on our insecurities until we find an outlet to release our pent up emotions. However, a single text or a smile from the person you like, can lighten up your day brighter than a thousand lanterns, making you feel invincible. Nobody ever said that life is easy. If it was, how mundane would it have been. We all fight demons, our own personal demons, with a lingering hope that someday we will be at peace. So, keep up the positive vibes and brush off the negativity. After all you live only once!

Say what you want to say - Pragati Thapa When was the last time you had a conversation with the driver who drops you home or with the strangers who sit next to you in the metro every morning? Why do people believe that talking to strangers can be potentially dangerous? How is it any different than talking to your mother, your aunt, your cousin because they surely are somebody else‟s aunt or cousin, aren‟t they? As a species, we are spending a lot of time staring into our devices rather than taking some time out to ask somebody how they are feeling or to talk about the weather. These conversations may not always amount to interesting revelations but they give you experiences that you wouldn‟t be able to get out of anything else. There are so many people out there who are passionate about so many different things. Spending even a meager five minutes with them could give you a whole new perspective about a subject that you had no prior knowledge of. Conversations are not just about gaining knowledge. It gives us the ability to step out of our little bubbles and try to understand the lives that other people are living. Who knows, conversations may sometimes be so impactful that they start to influence our thought process. Even if none of these things happen, it‟s always interesting to listen to somebody else‟s opinion. It helps us deepen our connection with the world and the people living in it. What‟s the point of journeying through life without making as many friends as we can? In the end, it‟s not the number of likes we get on Instagram or the number of scholarly articles we‟ve read that counts. What counts is that somewhere in the world someone will go to sleep remembering the conversation that they had with you. So the next time you‟re in an E-rickshaw with strangers, be sure to blurt out the “Hey” unhesitatingly.
The Journey to Justice - Devanshi Jaiswal How ironical it is that in a country where women are treated as Shakti, they are burnt like a brinjal without any mercy. India has witnessed numerous reforms for women empowerment like sati ban, widow re-marriage, dowry alleviation, that did much to ameliorate the status of women, but then to, the patriarchal ideology of the home being a woman's 'real domain' and marriage her ultimate „destiny‟ hasn't changed. One can‟t deny that the situation has improved significantly since the earlier times. Women, who now represent 48.2% of the population, are getting access to improved education and employment. They have slowly started to recognize their true potential. She has started questioning the rules laid down for her, breaking conventional barriers and earning a respectable position for herself. Today Indian women are acclaimed to have excelled in every field, from social work to visiting space station. There is no arena, which remains unconquered, be it politics, sports, entertainment, literature or technology, women power all along. Women now make their way through all the socialized prejudices and participate as equal contributors to the country‟s way forward.

The Demon -Kriti Sharma It was midnight, And she couldn‟t bring herself to win the fight. Lips split open, But time just sullied by! Maybe it shall be alright. Amidst blaring screams every night She tried holding onto that gnarled up life.
Another day. Some 3000 miles away. He lived in an empty room, With abyss so wide, Embraced in his own gloom. Holding onto that crane of hope, He attempted, Not to lose balance on the tied rope. With twilight seizing time, A casket was laid down, To cover up another perfect crime. He‟s holding her hand and looking into her eyes. Yet the deadweight wrecks him every single time. That pretty smile and mussed up head, Have already punched a void. With ghosts of memories bleeding profusely How will he avoid? Then we‟re back again. To where our race began. Through that tossing, turning and sleepless nights You could clutch onto your faith so tight When the world turns to ember, And you could barely remember Every single time you fought, That demon inside your closet threatened, Threatened to leave you paralyzed Crippled to take away all that was inside!

Journey towards the unknown -Shivani Bansal Here I come in the land of strangers At every step, awaited by dangers A distant land far from home In the unknown streets, alone I roam. I walk barefoot on the thorny path In scorching heat, facing the Sun's wrath My meek feet ache and burn Pleading me to return... But the stubborn I, continues with hope and fears Pushing back hard my nasty tears. With a smile on my lips and dreams in eyes With the aim of reaching beyond the skies With a pounding heart and woeful feet I persist in this treacherous heat Resolute, zealous, spirited but alone I embark on my Journey Towards the Unknown....
Stages Of Life -Parisha Rana "All the world's a stage And all the men and women, merely players, They have their exits and their entrances..." This excerpt from Shakespeare's famous work, 'All the World's a stage', beautifully depicts the „Safar' of life in 5 stages – a journey from life to death. Each stage has its own delight, responsibilities and experiences. This unique „Safar‟ starts from an infant, a beautiful creation of God, and can be considered as the purest form of life, free from negativity. This stage introduces the newly born, to the people with whom he/she is going to live for the rest of his/her life. Next, we have the educational stage. They learn various traits of life along with studies and slowly transform to an energetic and enthusiastic youth, ready to tussle with whatever life has to offer. They have glitters of passion in their eyes to achieve new heights and set benchmarks. Then comes the adult stage where a person is expected to have a well settled life, burdened with responsibilities to serve their family. Next starts the onset of old age. After gaining all the experiences, people retire to their home and serve as Guardians to guide the younger generation with their tales and expertise in different areas. After this the body slowly starts to lose pace with the soul and this marks the end of the greatest gift - 'Life'. This „Safar' of life is truly magical and we can make it immortal by performing good deeds, which people may remember for generations to come.

In the time of destruction, create something - Charu Shree Somani Living a sybaritic life, we tend to forget that beneath this life of rainbow, resides a darker, murkier world – a world evident of misery, haziness & uncertainty. Poverty is one such evil monster which devours millions. But at the end of every dark tunnel, there is light. One such source of light is Sanjit "Bunker" Roy, an ex-student of St. Stephens College. He had his schooling from The Doon School and is an Indian social activist. When he left college, he had the whole world! But out of curiosity, he thought of going to a village and working there. His mother asked him “What do you want to do in a Sanjit Roy village? No job, no money, no prospect!” He said, "I want to live and dig wells for five years." That was his way of repaying the debt to the society. And it was at this moment when he thought of building the Barefoot College & redefining professionalism for the welfare of poor people. This college follows the lifestyle and work pattern of Mahatma Gandhi. You eat on the floor, you work on the floor, you sleep on the floor. There are no written contracts. If you come for money, you don‟t come to Barefoot College. It's the only college where the teacher is the learner and the learner is the teacher and where they don‟t certify your credentials. It is currently operational in 77 countries across 1300 villages. The college has surpassed all the imaginative levels! When he first constructed the college in Tilonia, it was built by illiterate yet skillful architects. The whole college has exceptional facilities for rainwater harvesting & is fullyelectrified. It endeavors to eradicate the poverty and inequality issues by teaching the people in the community the basic skills they need to survive and be effective in their community – without having to hire people to do the simple jobs.. And the list goes on. Roy is a firm believer in “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight with you, and then you win." Guess he follows this as his dictum in life! He has done a commendable job and we salute him for his selfless efforts!

Raah -Sanjivani The scenery in Nashik district of Maharashtra state is breath-taking. It can also be lifetaking. And who better than the farmers of the district know all too well. Incidents of farmers committing suicides is endemic in entire Maharashtra. In the starting, when there was an all around doom and gloom; industrial failing to keep pace, manufacturing sector running in loses and the current account deficit growing to a worrisome level; it was only agriculture that provided a glimmer of hope and was considered as the backbone to the economy. And now the situation has taken a turn and all together a new journey has begun, one filled with misery and where the farmers have gaining nothing but false assurance from policy makers and fellow citizens. They hope for an bumper crop but land up under the burden of loans. Storms, heavy rains, draughts or simply infertility result in crop failure and eventually erode all means of survival. The producers of the food are fighting for one full square meal. Reality lies in the fact that 70 million farmers are exploited by the money lenders and the middle men of the country. And it all ends up with a rope around the neck. A recent survey highlights the fact that 1.6 lakh suicides have been recorded only in Vidharbha region. Is this a justified end to this tough journey? Farming is a Profession of HOPE. They have got dreams and they have the right to chase them too!! We all know very little of the strife, emotional burdens, and agony associated with the underprivileged, even lesser of the shattered dreams, new realities, and lifelong fear that follow poverty. The solution lies in helping them overcome their financial burden. We should aim to include the farmers in the wave of empowerment by eliminating the intermediate levels i.e. making the road (raah) shorter, and helping them sell their produce directly to the consumers further reducing the level of fraudulence. This will give a boost to the moral of the farmers, dispenses income direct to their pockets and also help them raise their standard of living. The youth of this country should assist them start a new journey by helping them cap their miseries to lower level. I believe every young mind is laden with profound capabilities, which if given a suitable platform could enable an individual to unravel a host of strengths to be capitalised.
Unknown -Ayushi Srivastava He always looked ahead, With an eye on his aim. Now he looked back, Wishing he had glanced sideways. Hoping he had enjoyed the „Safar‟ while toiling for his dreams, By knowing that the joy in reaching the destination Unknowingly lay in the journey.

The individual’s journey - Chelsea Arya Life is a journey filled with lessons, hard ships, heartaches, joys, celebrations and special moments that will ultimately lead us to our destination, our purpose in life. The road will not always be smooth; in fact throughout our travel, we will encounter many challenges. An individual faces many transitions in life, from childhood to teenage, from parenthood to old age. Childhood is the age in which one enjoys life, no responsibilities on shoulders and a stress free routine. Then he grows into a teenager and stress and peer pressure take over his mind. Observations state that many children even forget enjoyment in the face of transition and become mature prior to their age. Then, adult stage steps in and responsibility of family accompanies. He gets married and then becomes a parent. He faces many ups and downs in life but still manages to live after betrayals and difficulties. Then he starts to save, save his hard earned income for safeguarding his future generation. The journey doesn‟t stop here. His children grow up and he enters the last phase of this human journey of life. An individual‟s life is not meant to be feared or planned, it is meant to be travelled and enjoyed!
सफर खूबसूरत है मंजिल से भी -Anisha Isharwalia The destination, I could see With my eyes closed and heart open to all imaginations Yet in this process, I was missing, Missing the freshness of the wind hitting my face The force with which the river was hitting the ground rocks The cheerful birds spreading their wings and eyeing the beauty beneath The jerks owing to the speed breakers The talks which were going on..!! But when I reached my destination All I could think of was the journey. The journey which I wanted to take again But I couldn't Because life wasn't kind enough To offer me a second chance All I could think was of the birds and the trees As the destination now seem of the least importance to me.

Of The Mad World -Nitin Lalwani „Look, he is mad!‟ „…such a moron‟ „She is anyway an idiot!‟ How easy it is for the „sane‟ community to call others insane. Easier said than experienced! Experiencing the pain, the neglect and all those cross eyes. Admitted to the mental asylum for reasons of depression, mental ill-health, fanaticism and misunderstandings, they fall prey to treason and berating of the world outside. Ironical is the word „asylum‟, literally meaning a place of safety. What if they find their solace in typically being their own self in that confined area and still all we do is tag them as madmen? While a few stay there under the verdicts of judiciary and medicine, a lot others get snared because they cannot follow the social norms. In the world of mentally sound, we still choose to ignore the role of psychiatrists and psychoanalysts for the fear of being ousted from the mainstream. But what really madness is?
„Madness is the inability to communicate your ideas. It‟s as if you are in a foreign country, able to see and understand everything that‟s going on around you, but incapable of explaining what you need to know or of being helped, because you don‟t understand the language they speak there‟, quotes literature. It reveals choice of words. In reality, the affliction due to needles, the torment due to serotonins and above all disapproval of the society makes them an isolated class. Statistically, in India alone 6-7% of population suffered from mental disorders with close to 1% being seriously ill and facing problems like schizophrenia or bipolar disorders and others facing depression and high anxiety, as recorded a decade ago. World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 4 face mental illness once in their lifetime. But even these figures are a bit atrophied because of general tendency to ambush and conceal mentally ill. Commendable are the provisions in the new Mental Health Care Bill, 2013 but which again is stuck in the bureaucratic cycle of Indian legislation. At the crux, madness is quite a relative concept. What one goes nutty about, may not suit the behavioral norms of the other. It is for us to choose to be the saboteur or the saviors for them. More immediate is the call to sensitize and understand.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead -Shreya Srivastava My dear boy, It‟s almost here, the freedom that you have longed for, and the day I have dreaded since I first held you in my arms. Soon, I‟ll release you, like a falcon into the future. When you will walk out of the door, a part of me will go with you, and my heart will accompany you every place you go. It feels as if I closed my eyes for a moment, and suddenly a man stood where my little boy used to be. I still remember the way you looked at me right after you were born, the way I would brush the hair off your forehead, the way you made me laugh with all the silly things you did as a baby. It seems like yesterday when I used to sit with you in the garden, watching you chase after butterflies with gay abandon. The pitter patter of your little feet was like music to my ears. I never realized when those little feet grew so much bigger than my own. I have come to realize that life as a parent is a long series of letting go. Now I realize that you were never mine to keep, but just to teach how to soar on your own. This is your time to fly away and chase after your dreams. My dear boy, always keep your dreams alive. If they die, life becomes like a broken winged bird that cannot touch the skies. Don‟t let my love become your shackles; go wherever your dreams take you. Always remember, whenever you find yourself in a conundrum, I‟m here for you no matter how far you go. Love, Mom

Ripples Every idea needs expression and so does every good undertaking. NSS SRCC proudly commenced its online social initiative of spreading awareness. "Epoch- The Imprint" is an attempt to make people aware of the social issues prevalent in our society. This series is a weekly venture which devotes one day to voice the unheard and unsaid. It is an initiative to bring light in this human world and to spread ideas which are left unnoticed in the wake of darkness, creating ripples of hope. -Urja Raheja In our life we have at least one chance that inspires us to change our attitude and become a good human. I also had such an experience while travelling to a hill station. The day I reached my destination, I saw a mother and her four-five year old kid. She asked her son to bring some food from nearby town and said that if he failed to do so, he would not get food for the whole day. After three days, I saw both of them again. This time she asked him to earn 50 rupees. After listening to this, I furiously went to her and said that she is neither a good mother nor a good human. Then she told me that she is behaving such so that she can train her son to arrange at least for his food because her husband died 2 years ago and she had blood cancer. She didn‟t want her son to beg in front of others. That day I understood that whatever our parents do has a reason behind it and that every journey is a lesson to acquaint us with it. -Bhawana Rani
Dear teacher, You are a ray of hope in my life which wakes me up to work. You are a ray of vision which defines my destiny. You are a ray of fire which always burns my negative desires. You are a ray of solution that pulls out from my problem. You are a ray of my parents, who showers love on me. You are a ray of Almighty who shapes the journey to my destiny. -Rudra Akshay Kumar
The rusty board had something to say- “I have lost my money down the lane, if found kindly return to this address.” The address took me to an old lady. “I have found your money,” said I with a satisfied smile. It was not me who had put up that board, some kind soul did. Since then, I have been regularly receiving the money I have not lost. That day made me a part of an endless Ripple- The Journey to Kindness. -Fathima Basheer
