South Shore Adventure Day

The Golden Circle Adventure Day

Visit the 200ft high Skógafoss then continue on to Seljalandsfoss to compare differing formations.

Study geothermal activity at truly spectacular locations!

Study coastal processes and wave characteristics on the black volcanic beaches and basalt-columned cliffs of the Dyrhólaey coast. Then take the rare opportunity to walk on Sólheimajökull, a glacier tongue extending south from the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, study the outwash plain, and witness glacial processes in action.

First, visit the Hellisheidi power plant for a 30 minute tour, before visiting Hveragerdi’s Geothermal Park. Appreciate the interaction between tectonic and glacial influences at the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall, which greatly contrasts those waterfalls seen on NST’s South Shore Adventure. Witness Strokkur in action at the Geysir Center. Finally, visit Thingvellir National Park - the only place in the world where the Mid Atlantic Ridge can be observed above sea level.

This ‘land of ice and fire’ well deserves its title. Your group will bear witness to rare phenomena, from dramatic volcanic lunar landscapes and spouting geysers, to diverging plates, glaciers, and outwash plains! There is no better place to observe the ongoing impact of glaciations and vulcanicity: ice fields, waterfalls and geothermal pools! Iceland also has a unique heritage and a style all of its own.

SECRET LAGOON Experience the steamy hot waters of the Secret Lagoon. These natural hot springs provide a traditional and unique Icelandic experience that will leave you relaxed and rejuvenated, and ready to continue your Icelandic adventure!

NST Field Studies Guides available in the Bay of Naples - see reverse

The Bay of Naples provides a great opportunity to study key themes at all levels including Tectonic Processes, Tourism, Hazard Management, Coasts and Industry. This exciting programme includes visits to Pompeii, the Phlegraean Fields and the Island of Capri.

Mount Vesuvius

Phlegraean Fields

Nowhere in the world can the effects of a volcanic eruption be better understood. You will be driven most of the way up the mount then take a 30-minute guided walk to the rim.

Known by the Greeks and Romans as the fiery birthplace of myth and legend (the entrance to Hades or Hell was said to be here), the Bay of Pozzuoli tucked between Naples and the Tyrrhenian Sea is a giant caldera 12-15km across. Within this caldera is a moonscape of smaller eruptions and concern that this could be the site of a super volcano.

Island of Capri

Visit the Temple of Serapis in Pozzuoli which Charles Babage first used to explain the phenomenon of Bradyseism, followed by a walk around Pozzuoli itself, racked by earthquakes in the 1980s and now substantially rebuilt. Pupils will be able to see how the port has had to be extended outwards because of uplift,

This stunning rocky coastline features the Arco Naturale and Faraglione landforms, shaped over many years by the erosive power of the sea. A laser boat ride around the island is available upon arrival to see the coastline formations, and a funicular railway can be taken for a five minute journey up to Capri centre.

Your group will study the most densely populated volcano in the world.

Pompeii Observe the destructive impact of the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD which buried, and consequently preserved these famous towns. Take in the original streets, houses, preserved human casts, and works of art on display.

and how the old harbour is now virtually abandoned. Finally there is an opportunity to climb Monte Nuovo, formed in a single week or walk around Lake Avernus - a volcanic crater lake.
