Bay of Naples
The School Tour Specialists
The Bay of Naples provides a great opportunity to study key themes including Tectonic Processes, Tourism, Hazard Management, Coasts and Industry. This exciting programme includes visits to Pompeii, the Phlegraean Fields, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. A mild climate makes this the ideal area to visit at any time of year.
HIGHLIGHTS
✓ Mount Vesuvius ✓ Pompeii ✓ Amalfi Coast ✓ Sorrento Olive Grove & Working Mill ✓ Phlegraean Fields Coastline of Capri
Key Visits Guided Option Available
MOUNT VESUVIUS Nowhere in the world can the effects of a volcanic eruption be better understood. Your group will study the most densely populated volcano in the world. Complete NST’s dedicated activity sheets to consider its formation, eruptive history, anatomy and human management issues, and even read eye witness accounts of the 79AD eruption! Guided Option Available
POMPEII Observe the destructive impact of the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD which buried, and consequently preserved these famous towns. Take in the original streets, houses, preserved human casts, and works of art on display.
NST’s Educational Resources provide a range of onsite activity sheets. Guided Option Available
HERCULANEUM On a smaller scale than Pompeii, but better preserved in the same Vesuvius eruption of August 79AD, this visit is often preferred by many students.
VANNULLO FARM & DAIRY Renowned for its outstanding buffalo mozzarella, this farm and dairy is a fantastic visit to deliver a case study on Industry. Guided Option Available
PHLEGRAEAN FIELDS Earthquakes and fumaroles bear testimony to continuing tectonic activity in this area. Visit the ash-filled crater of Solfatara,
experience jets of steam charged with sulphurous fumes, bubbling hot mud, and crystallised rock formations. Transfer to Pozzuoli, an area that has experienced dramatic earthquake activity and tectonic uplift, and finally climb the volcanic cone, Monte Nuovo. Guided Option Available
THE ISLAND OF CAPRI This stunning rocky coastline features the Arco Naturale and Faraglione landforms, shaped over many years by the erosive power of the sea and its interaction with Capri’s limestone geology.
AMALFI COAST Drive the famous Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where a ribbon of road clings tightly to steep, rugged cliffs interspersed with picturesque towns and opportunities to study coastal landforms and tourism impact.
SORRENTO OLIVE GROVE & WORKING MILL Visit the interesting local industry of a traditional lemon & olive grove located in the hills of Sorrento. The visit includes a guided walk of the lemon and olive groves (with an overview of the cultivation & harvesting process), plus a tour of the working mill ending with demonstration of the mozzarella cheese making process. The visit includes a drink and pizza at the end of the tour.
EVENING ACTIVITIES Most of our hotels are happy for groups to make use of their facilities for evening discussions or quizzes. The Sorrento bowling alley and the Tarantella Show are group favourites, and you can even hold your own disco afterwards too!

Iceland
The School Tour Specialists
Iceland, the Geographer’s and Geologist’s ultimate playground, offers unique opportunities for students. Your group will bear witness to rare phenomena, from dramatic volcanic lunar landscapes and spouting geysers, to diverging plates, glaciers, and outwash plains!
HIGHLIGHTS
✓ South Shore Adventure Day ✓ The Golden Circle Adventure Day ✓ Blue Lagoon ✓ Reykjavik ✓ Thjorsa Valley Eyjafjallajokull Volcano
Key Visits Most Recommended
SOUTH SHORE ADVENTURE DAY
Visit the 200ft high Skógafoss waterfall then continue on to Seljalandsfoss waterfall to compare differing formations. Study coastal processes and wave characteristics along the black volcanic beaches and basalt-columned cliffs of the Dyrhólaey coast. Then take the rare opportunity to walk on Sólheimajökull, a glacier tongue extending south from the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, study the outwash plain, and witness glacial processes in action.
THE GOLDEN CIRCLE ADVENTURE DAY
Study geothermal activity at truly spectacular locations! Visit the geothermal environment of Hveragerdi’s Eden Center, then appreciate the interaction between
tectonic and glacial influences at the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall, which greatly contrasts those waterfalls seen on NST’s South Shore Adventure. Witness Strokkur (the most famous and active geysers in Iceland) in action at the Geysir Center. Finally, visit Þingvellir National Park and walk through its dramatic canyon. This is the only place in the world where the Mid Atlantic Ridge can be observed above sea level.
BLUE LAGOON
Witness and experience the effects of geothermal activity! Take a soak in the steamy 40°C waters of the Blue Lagoon which are fed from a nearby geothermal power plant.
REYKJAVIK
Experience a different culture in beautiful surroundings! Explore the city’s centre and harbour area. Visit
Óskjuhlid to observe the Perlan Centre.
THORSMORK VALLEY
APRIL TO SEPTEMBER ONLY At Þórsmörk, students will witness glacial landforms of varying scales. You will be transported across the rugged valley and proglacial streams in a purpose-built off-road bus. Visits will include a stop at Gigjokull to view the outlet glacier calving into a pro-glacial lake, the spectacular ribbon Seljalandsfoss waterfall (instead of on day one) and the rift canyon at Stakkholtsgja.
THJORSA VALLEY
The beautiful Thjorsa Valley is in the shadow of Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. Visit the reconstructed Saga Age Farm and excavations at Stong, and some delightful waterfalls and gorges in the area. You will head
east of Hekla and drive through the lava fields, pseudo craters and agricultural areas, following Thjorsa - Iceland’s longest river.
Other Key Visits: ✓ Westman Islands ✓ Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón & South
Shore (2 Day overnight stay)
National Guides Your group will be accompanied each day by a National Guide. Being a native of Iceland, they will provide useful information at each geographical site, as well as commentary on surroundings and Icelandic culture during your coach journey.
