As the momentous events of 1989 and their consequences become more widely studied, NST’s Berlin tours also cover the fall of Communism. These tours cover the growth of political dissent, the effects of policy changes emanating from Moscow and the events of the autumn of 1989. Choose from a range of sites to cover aspects of German history from the Wilhelmine period, to the end of the Cold War.
Our Guide's Introduction Jeff Garner
The recent history of Germany’s capital is still clearly evident today, to the extent that it is impossible to walk through the city without being continually made aware of its recent past. Krakow
The ancient Capital of Poland is a hugely historical and cultural centre. Visit Schindler’s Krakow and take an emotional journey to Auschwitz and Birkenau to get an insight into this extreme example of the consequences of discrimination. This tour will make a lifelong impression on those who visit.
Our Guide's Introduction Jeff Garner
So much survives in Krakow that bears witness to pre-war Jewish life in Kazimierz and throughout this city. The evidence of the wartime experience of Europe’s Jewish population in ghettos such as Podgorze, coupled with a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, enables students to develop a thorough, rounded picture of the experience of Jewish communities in Central Europe during the 20th century.
Key Educational Visits Around the Old Town Square
Auschwitz-Birkenau
Rynek Główny (Town Square) - the largest in medieval Europe, Mariacki Church (St Mary’s Church) of Gothic origins with a fine altar, Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) of vast proportions.
Following the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939, Oswiecim and its surrounding region were incorporated into the domains of the Third Reich. The town’s name was changed to Auschwitz and it became home to the largest concentration and death camp. Today as a museum, Auschwitz serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of WWII.
The Old Town View particularly the University District and the Collegium Maius – the historic heart of the university area.
Podgorze (The Wartime Ghetto) In March 1941, the entire Jewish population of the city were crammed into this tiny ghetto, featured in the movie Schindler’s List. There is also an exhibition on the persecution of the Jews in Krakow at the Pharmacy Under the Eagle.
Kazimierz A tour of the former Jewish district of the city visiting synagogues, museums and the old cemetery.

WWI Battlefields
On the Somme, a tour will follow the events of the 1st July 1916 in considerable detail. Although the events of that day were in many ways unique, examining why the British failed to break through both then and in the later fighting, gives considerable insight into the reasons for the prolonged stalemate on the Western Front. Following the events of 1917, a tour to the Ypres area concentrates on the period from the beginning of The Messines Offensive in June to the end of The Passchendaele Offensive in November.

This superb state-of-the-art, interactive museum is now an even richer experience with the updated larger museum. Covering most aspects of the war in Flanders, each visitor will receive a wristband that will take them on a journey in the museum through the eyes of someone who was there. An educational pack, study resources and education room are available.
Newfoundland Park, Beaumont Hamel Undoubtedly one of the largest and best-preserved trench memorials on the Western Front.
