SETTING THE STAGE NSU and Hampton meet for the 50th time in the annual Battle of the Bay this Saturday. Both teams are looking to end four-game losing streaks in one of the most celebrated rivalries in all of HBCU sports. SCOUTING THE SPARTANS NSU dropped its fourth straight game last Saturday, squandering a 17-13 fourth-quarter lead in a 20-17 loss to Delaware State. The Spartans appeared to take a 10-point edge early in the fourth, but a penalty negated a touchdown and allowed DSU the chance to hang around. Nick Elko’s 23-yard TD pass to Justin Brewton with 10:01 left was the deciding score. NSU got 312 passing yards from Jake Basmagian in the sophomore’s first start as a Spartan. Brendon Riddick rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown and Xavier Boyce made six receptions for 66 yards. The Spartans outgained the Hornets 455-293. Through six games, NSU is fourth in the MEAC in total offense (346.5 ypg) and second in total defense (281.3 ypg). Riddick and fellow running back Takeem Hedgeman have combined for 648 rushing yards and nine touchdowns (seven rushing). Defensively, linebacker Lynden Trail leads the MEAC with 8.0 tackles for loss and ranks second with 4.0 sacks. SCOUTING THE PIRATES Hampton comes off its second bye week of the season still searching for its first victory of 2012. The Pirates fell to 0-4 after a 38-26 loss to Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 29. Hampton outgained the Wildcats 536-320 but committed seven turnovers. Travis Champion and Jaylian Williamson combined for pass for 279 yards but threw four interceptions. Running back Jeremiah Schwartz racked up 201 yards rushing and a score. Hampton enters this week ranked first in the MEAC in total offense (361.8 ypg) but ninth in total defense (426.8 ypg). Champion ranks second in the conference in passing yards per game (218.5) and total offense (222.2 ypg), while Schwartz is second in rushing yards per game (90.2). Linebackers Devante Hawkins and Lyndell Gibson both have 40 tackles, ranking in the MEAC’s top five.

QUICK HITS FROM DELAWARE STATE • NSU has now lost its three MEAC games by a combined 18 points. This marked the second MEAC loss this year by three points or less. • Eric Hitch led NSU in tackles for the first time this season, matching his career high with eight. • Walk-on Blair Reid made his first career appearance, serving as one of the team’s punt returners. He returned one punt for six yards. • Everett Goldberg kicked one touchback, running his MEAC-leading total to 10 this year (in 25 kickoffs, including three “squib” kicks). • Jake Basmagian’s 86-yard TD pass to Takeem Hedgeman marked not only Basmagian’s first career TD pass, but Hedgeman’s first career TD reception. It was also NSU’s longest play this year. • Basmagian passed for 312 yards, giving NSU two separate QBs who have thrown for 300+ yards in a game this season. Eastern Washington (Kyle Padron, Vernon Adams) is the only other school to have done that so far in 2012. BASMAGIAN GETS 1ST CAREER START Sophomore quarterback Jake Basmagian made the first start of his Spartan career last Saturday against Delaware State. The transfer from Los Angeles’ Pierce College threw three interceptions, one of which was deflected, but did complete 24 of his 35 passes for 312 yards and a score. His TD pass covered 86 yards – NSU’s longest play this season – to senior running back Takeem Hedgeman. Basmagian completed passes to seven different receivers. DEFENSE STANDS TALL ONCE MORE Last year marked the third consecutive season in which the NSU defense ranked in the top 10 among all FCS schools in total defense. After finishing sixth nationally in both 2009 and 2010, the 2011 defense proved to be the best in the Pete Adrian era at NSU, ranking second in the country. This year’s defense is also off to a good start, allowing just 281.3 yards per game so far, good for No. 5 nationally. The Spartans also rank: • 9th nationally in pass defense (150.17 ypg) • 20th in tackles for loss (7.2 per game) • Tied for 29th in sacks (2.3 per game). POSITION SWITCHES With Basmagian now starting at quarterback, NSU has moved its former starter at QB, Nico Flores, to receiver. Flores was recruited by Central Florida as an “athlete” out of North Miami Beach High and was later moved from quarterback to receiver for the Knights. He did not catch a pass in his two years at UCF, but did run six times for 48 yards as a freshman in 2010 out of the “Wildcat” formation. In addition, nose guard Nico Washington, who started the first four games of the season, moves back to the offensive line for a second time and will now wear No. 58 (was 96). He will work at offensive guard, where he started 11 of the 12 games last year before moving to defense, where he began his career. Lastly, junior offensive lineman Justin Myler will see some time at tight end. He now wears No. 99 (was 71). ON YOUR TRAIL Sophomore Florida transfer linebacker Lynden Trail has emerged as one of the top defensive players in the MEAC. Despite coming off the bench in all six NSU games this season, the 6-7, 250-pound Trail leads the team in tackles, with 34 through six games (5.7 per game). Trail is first in the MEAC in tackles for loss (8.0) and second in sacks (4.0). He also leads the Spartans with five quarterback hurries and has one forced fumble and one fumble recovery to his credit. Trail was a four-star recruit coming out of Miami, Fla.’s Booker T. Washington High School and was ranked the No. 7 defensive end in the nation by Rivals.com. He selected Florida over dozens of offers from top-flight schools, including Michigan, USC, Florida State, LSU, Georgia and more. Trail did not play in any games during his two seasons at UF, which included a redshirt season. RIDDICK NAMED TO JERRY RICE AWARD LIST Redshirt freshman Brendon Riddick was named last week to the initial watch list for the Jerry Rice Award, given nationally to the top freshman in the Division I FCS by The Sports Network. Riddick was the Metro Player of the Year as a quarterback at Hermitage High School in Richmond as a senior in 2010 and was recruited as a quarterback by the Spartans. He served as the scout-team quarterback last season while redshirting, but was moved by the coaches to running back this spring. More on the NSU freshman: • Riddick is ninth in the MEAC in rushing, with 347 yards (57.8 ypg). • Riddick was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for Oct. 8 after rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown against Delaware State. • Riddick was named Sports Network FCS Rookie of the Week and MEAC Offensive Player of the Week following his big day at Liberty (21 rushes, 150 yards, three TD). • His seven touchdowns (six rushing, one receiving) are tied for the second-most in the MEAC. • He is tied for fifth overall in the league in scoring, at 7.0 points per game. • No Spartan since John Quinerly in 1996 (252 yards) had more rushing yards through the first two games of the year than Riddick did (237). • Riddick has six rushing touchdowns, one more than the Spartan who led the squad in 2011, QB Chris Walley. Takeem Hedgeman and Randy Maynes led NSU’s running backs with three apiece last year. • Riddick also plays special teams. He has made four tackles (three solo) so far this year.

DOUBLE DUTY NSU senior Eric Hitch pulled off a rare feat last week against Delaware State: he started on both offense and defense. Hitch has started all six games this season at inside linebacker, and led the Spartans with eight tackles against DSU. But he also started at fullback for the NSU offense last week. Hitch played both positions in high school and had seen some action in goal-line offensive formations earlier in the year. Saturday was his first start on offense, however. GARRETT OUT FOR THE SEASON NSU suffered another blow to its offense when redshirt senior receiver Reggie Garrett suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of the Delaware State game last week. He was injured following a 15-yard reception. Since Garrett already redshirted once in his career (2008) and played in the first six games of this season, his NSU career is likely over. Garrett has caught 73 passes for 815 yards and three touchdowns in 29 career games. LOTS OF LAUNDRY NSU continues to struggle this season with penalties. The Spartans were called for 14 infractions against DSU last week for 119 yards. Those figures are both the second-most committed by a NSU this year, following the Virginia State game (20 penalties, 164 yards). The Spartans are tied for 117th out of 121 FCS schools nationally in penalties, committing 11.17 per game. NSU is 115th in penalty yards per game, at 92.8. BOYCE’S MILESTONES Xavier Boyce led NSU with six catches for 66 yards last week against Delaware State. In the process, Boyce reached both the 100-reception plateau and 1,000-yard receiving mark at NSU. Through 18 games over a year and a half with the Spartans, the Virginia Tech transfer now has 100 catches for 1,048 yards and five TDs. HOT POTATO The Spartans will be attempting this week to do a better job of holding onto the football. NSU is 10th out of 11 MEAC schools in turnover margin, at minus-8 on the year. Only Hampton (minus-10) has a bigger disparity in takeaways vs. giveaways. The Spartans have committed a MEAC-high 17 turnovers while forcing just nine. In 2011, NSU finished the year plus-3 and had just 16 turnovers all year (in 12 games). DEMPS CATCHES ON Junior wideout Derrick Demps has emerged as one of the more reliable targets not just in the Spartans’ passing game, but in the entire MEAC. Demps caught at least four passes in five of the first six games, including a career-high six receptions at Ohio. That came on the heels of his five-catch, career-high 123-yard effort in the loss to Howard. Demps is currently seventh in the MEAC in receptions with 25 (4.2 per game). Though sometimes overshadowed by 6-4 senior Xavier Boyce, Demps began his emergence late last season. He had five catches for 106 yards and two scores in a win at Savannah State, then caught the longest TD pass in NSU history - a 98-yarder - in the playoff loss to ODU. He led the Spartans in yards per catch (21.9) and receptions over 30 yards (six) last year. ROAD WARRIORS The Spartans have one of the tougher schedules among MEAC teams. For the second straight year, NSU does not have a bye week until the final weekend of the regular season, meaning the Spartans play 11 consecutive games. The Spartans also have a stretch beginning Sept. 22 at Ohio where they play five of six games on the road. In addition to their FBS foe, NSU also plays at traditional MEAC stalwarts South Carolina State (Sept. 29), Hampton (Oct. 13), Bethune-Cookman (Oct. 20) and North Carolina A&T (Oct. 27). All of those teams visited Dick Price Stadium last season. NSU has played well on the road as of late, though. The Spartans have won seven of their last 11 games on the road dating to 2010, and six of their last seven conference road games. SPECIAL TEAMS STRUGGLES Normally a position of strength, the Spartans’ special teams have struggled in the first six games. • The Spartans have had eight kicks blocked this season: three extra points, two field goals and three punts. The Spartans had just four blocked last season (two punts, two field goals). • NSU had three kicks blocked against Howard, none costlier than the potential tying PAT in overtime. • NSU has also surrendered a return touchdown twice this season: a 77-yard punt return TD to Liberty’s Kevin Fogg, and a 100-yard kickoff return by Howard’s Rodney Tyson. FLORES AIRS IT OUT VS. HOWARD Former quarterback Nico Flores had one of the early-season bright spots for the NSU offense when he came through with the biggest passing performance in almost nine years for a Spartan QB: • Flores posted a 387-yard, four-TD passing day in the loss to Howard. He passed for all four TDs and 327 of the yards after halftime. • Flores’ 387-yard effort is the most by a Spartan QB since Dontrell Leonard’s 439 yards at Morgan State on Nov. 22, 2003. • Flores is the first NSU QB to throw four TD passes in a game since Casey Hansen did it on Sept. 27, 2007.

SLOW STARTS NSU has had trouble with starting slow this season. In four of the team’s six games, the Spartns’ opponent has scored first. The Spartans have been outscored 58-10 in the first quarter this season and 98-24 in the first half. The Spartans have been much better in the second halves of games, outscoring their foes 78-34, including 39-7 in the fourth quarter. SPARTANS RACK UP NATIONAL, MEAC HONORS Three Spartans reaped the rewards from the team’s win at Liberty. • Brendon Riddick earned the most accolades, earning The Sports Network’s National Freshman of the Week, MEAC Offensive Player of the Week and Boxtorow HBCU National Player of the Week for his 150-yard, three-touchdown performance. • Offensive lineman Cameron Williams was named MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week for the first time in his career. Williams, who graded out at 92 percent on his assignments, started the game at right tackle and later played guard, keying the Spartans’ 343 yards of total offense (251 rushing). • Sophomore Keith Johnson was named MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his 83-yard punt return touchdown in the third quarter. It was his first career special teams score and his first career weekly MEAC award. FIRST-TIME STARTERS The following 11 Spartans made their first career starts for NSU sometime in the first five games: • Offense: OL E.J. Rogers and Julius Wormley and FB Conley Smith (Virginia State game), RB Brendon Riddick and OL Mike Phillips (Liberty game), RT Jairus Spain and WR Isaac White (SCSU game), QB Jake Basmagian (Delaware State game). • Defense: LB Marcell Coke, FS Darrin Marrow and DL Cameron Jude (Virginia State game), DL Shawn Fauntleroy Jr. (SCSU game) 10 TRUE FRESHMEN PLAY IN FIRST 2 GAMES Despite NSU’s solid depth on both sides of the ball, a strong recruiting class, including a number of late additions, has bolstered the Spartans’ roster in 2012. Nine true freshmen played in the opener: WR Isaac White, OL Amardeep Singh and Mike Phillips, DL Kevin Williams and Shawn Fauntleroy, DB Troi Hughes, FB Conley Smith and LB Deon King and Justin Gant all saw time, either on special teams or at their respective positions. The following redshirt freshmen also played: RB Brendon Riddick, WR Wilonte’ Roscoe and DeAndre Sangster, OL Ramsey Henderson, DB Andre Bean and Shaquan Bailey, and TE Tevin White. Against Liberty, freshman LB Lamar Neal also played, making it 10 true freshmen to see time in the season’s first two games. MATTHEWS OUT FOR SEASON NSU lost senior preseason All-America offensive lineman Blake Matthews for the year due to a knee injury. Matthews was injured during the second day of preseason camp during a non-contact drill. Matthews, who redshirted the 2008 season, will petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility. Matthews was a first-team All-MEAC and second-team All-America pick in 2011. He was also the Spartans’ first-ever MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year award winner. TRANSFERS BOLSTER DEFENSE NSU lost seven starters from its 2011 defense, which led the MEAC and ranked second in the nation in total yards allowed (275.8 ypg). The coaching staff turned to the transfer ranks to bolster the Spartans’ depth and came away with three Division I FBS transfers. The three are all listed on the defense’s second unit. In addition to Lynden Trail (see page 2), the others are: • Mike Privott, ILB, Louisville (R-Jr.): Privott spent three seasons with the Cardinals, including a redshirt year, and played in three games. The product of nearby Lake Taylor High School was rated the 44th-best linebacker in the country by Rivals.com and was considered a three-star recruit. He also had offers from UNC, West Virginia, N.C. State and others coming out of high school. • Brent Singleton, ILB, Minnesota (R-Jr.): Singleton spent three seasons at UM, including a redshirt year, but did not see any game action. He was a three-star recruit according to Rivals and Scout.com coming out of Plantation High School in Florida. He is also the cousin of former NSU linebacker Mike Alphonse, who was himself an FBS transfer (played at NSU in 2008-09). COACHING CHANGES NSU shuffled its offensive coaching staff after last season. Receivers coach Howard Feggins was promoted to offensive coordinator after Joe Blackwell was not retained. Feggins was offensive coordinator for three seasons at FBS program Eastern Michigan (2004-06). His first offense, in 2004, ranked 21st in the nation in total offense. After coaching the running backs at EMU in 2007, Feggins served as receivers coach for three seasons at South Carolina State (2008-10), helping the Bulldogs to at least a share of three straight MEAC titles. After serving on NSU’s staff last year, Feggins can now say he has been on the staff of four consecutive MEAC championship teams. Feggins will also coach the quarterbacks this season, taking over the duties held last year by Steve Canter, who left to take a similar position at Rhode Island. Head coach Pete Adrian then hired Quintin Smith to coach the NSU receivers. Smith, who has also worked in pro scout and player personnel, was tight ends coach at Texas Southern last year. The Spartans welcome back part-time assistants Mike Daly (kicking coach) and Phil Ingram (assistant defensive backs coach) and also hired former NSU All-MEAC offensive lineman Calton Ford (2007-10) to coach offensive tackles and tight ends.

“PETE ADRIAN COACH’S SHOW” DEBUTS FROM BAXTER’S SPORTS LOUNGE The Pete Adrian Coach’s Show made its debut on Aug. 28 from Baxter’s Sports Lounge on Granby Street in downtown Norfolk. The show airs live each Wednesday on WXTG 102.1 FM/1490 AM The Game, and archives of the show will be available at www.nsuspartans.com in the Podcasting center. NSU TO CONTINUE PARTNERSHIP WITH WXTG 102.1 FM THE GAME For the third straight year, NSU football games can be heard around the Hampton Roads area on WXTG 102.1 FM The Game. WXTG, owned by Red Zebra Broadcasting, is also the official home for Washington Redskins radio in the Tidewater area. The games will also again be simulcast on NSU’s student radio station, WNSB 91.1 FM. Both stations also offer live audio streaming. NSU will expand its pre-game show to 30 minutes this season. Ross Gordon returns for his sixth season as the play-by-play voice of NSU athletics. He will be joined in the booth by former two-time All-MEAC linebacker Maguell Davis. NEW HD VIDEO DISPLAYS ON TAP FOR DICK PRICE STADIUM IN 2012 NSU has partnered with Daktronics to install new LED video display boards at both ends of Dick Price Stadium. Installation was completed during the summer of 2012. On the east side of the football field, a new video display measuring more than 17 feet high by 47 feet wide was installed. This display, which features Daktronics 15HD technology, is capable of showing one large image, highlighting live video and instant replays. It can also be divided into separate windows to show a variety of graphics, animations, statistics, scoring information and advertisements. On either side of this display, two more video displays were installed. On the west side of the field, another set of video displays were installed. The main display measures 12 feet 6 inches high by more than 31 feet wide. Daktronics incorporated the Spartans’ existing Daktronics sound system, along with two new sponsor displays, to flank the video display on both sides. The sponsor displays measure more than 3 feet high by 16 feet wide. A YEAR TO REMEMBER The 2011 season was certainly a year to remember for the NSU football program. Here’s a brief look at some of the notable achievements for the program in 2011: • First-ever MEAC title and FCS playoff berth • Highest-ever national ranking (ended the season at No. 18 in both TSN and FCS Coaches polls) • Most wins in the Division I era (9-3) and second-most for any era behind the 1984 team (10-2) • Had its first-ever MEAC Offensive Player of the Year (QB Chris Walley) and Offensive Lineman of the Year (Blake Matthews) • Pete Adrian named MEAC and FCS National Coach of the Year (College Sporting News) • Record-tying 10 Spartans named All-MEAC • NSU had a record seven first-team all-conference honorees: QB Chris Walley, WR Xavier Boyce, OL Kendall Noble and Blake Matthews, LB Corwin Hammond, K Ryan Estep, DL Josh Turner. • Four Spartans earned All-America honors: Estep (HBCU, FCS), Matthews (HBCU, FCS), Boyce (HBCU) and Hammond (HBCU) • NSU notched its third straight winning season, the longest streak at NSU since 1994-96 • NSU won black college Division I national titles in polls conducted by the Heritage Sports Radio Network, Boxtorow.com and the American Sports Wire ADRIAN RECEIVES 2-YEAR EXTENSION NSU Athletics Director Marty Miller announced on Aug. 23 that head football coach Pete Adrian has been given a two-year contract extension, keeping him as the Spartans’ coach through the 2015 season. Adrian led NSU to its first-ever MEAC championship in 2012, when NSU notched its third straight winning season and fourth in the last five years. Adrian is 45-36 overall in seven-plus seasons at the helm of the program. The Spartans have also won the last three Division I FCS Academic Progress Rate (APR) Awards for having the highest APR score for all MEAC schools. FORMER SPARTANS MAKE PRO LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES Former Spartans Emery Sammons (2004-06) and William Falakiseni (2009-10) both had the opportunity to play for their respective indoor football league championships this past summer. Sammons, a wideout, helped the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League advance to the ArenaBowl, where they lost to the Arizona Rattlers. He caught 48 passes for 598 yards and eight touchdowns for Philadelphia this year. Sammons also played in 2010-11 with the AFL’s Spokane Shock. Sammons caught 76 passes for 1,220 yards in his three years at NSU. Falakiseni, a center, helped the Tri-Cities Fever advance to the United Bowl, the championship game of the Indoor Football League. There, the Fever lost to the Sioux Falls Storm. Falakiseni started all 22 games in his NSU career after transferring from junior college. He was a first-team All-MEAC pick in 2009 and a second-team pick in 2010. Falakiseni earned second-team all-league honors as a rookie this year with Tri-Cities. CAREY ON INJURED RESERVE Former NSU defensive back Don Carey (2005-08), who played last year with the Detroit Lions, was placed on injured reserve by the team this summer due to a hamstring ailment. Carey played five games with the Lions last year, making 11 tackles and deflecting one pass. Carey was drafted by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 2009 draft, only to sustain a season-ending injury in camp and was cut by the team. He was promptly signed by Jacksonville and started 10 games at free safety in 2010, making 55 tackles and intercepting one pass.

GAME 2: #24 NSU 31, LIBERTY 24 Sept. 8, 2012 Williams Stadium • Lynchburg, Va.
The Norfolk State defense dominated from start to finish in the Virginia Lottery Labor Day Classic, notching the Spartans’ first shutout since 2001 with a 24-0 victory over Virginia State before 24,322 fans. NSU (1-0) won its seventh straight over the Trojans (0-1) by holding the visitors to just 107 yards of total offense. The Spartan defense registered 17 tackles for loss, seven sacks and four takeaways to notch NSU’s first shutout in 116 games. Senior linebacker Jamal Giddens was the catalyst, tallying seven tackles, 4.5 for loss, two sacks and two forced fumbles despite missing much of the second half due to cramps. Giddens helped create the Spartans’ first touchdown. With NSU leading 3-0 and VSU backed up deep in its own end, Giddens sacked Trojan quarterback Jarred Battle and knocked the ball loose. Defensive lineman Noel Clarke Jr. recovered the fumble in the end zone, and the point-after gave NSU a 10-0 lead with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter. Neither team scored in the second quarter, but the Spartans wasted little time adding to their lead in the second half. Marcus Cooperwood returned the third-quarter kickoff 70 yards to the VSU 18. Five plays later, freshman Brendon Riddick scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 2-yard run, and the extra point pushed the Spartans’ lead to 17-0. After forcing a punt on the Trojans’ next possession, the NSU offense put together its best drive of the night. The Spartans marched 77 yards in 11 plays, capped by a 10-yard Takeem Hedgeman scoring run, to all but put the game out of reach. In addition to Giddens’ big night, King, Lynden Trail and Eric Hitch all finished with three tackles for loss apiece. Lineman George Riddick had two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Clarke, Mike Privott and Terrence Pugh all recovered fumbles, and Cooperwood had an interception. VSU finished with 36 rushes for 10 yards and its two quarterbacks completed 7-of-17 passes for 97 yards.
Freshman Brendon Riddick rushed 21 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns, and Norfolk State’s defense and special teams both scored touchdowns to help the Spartans rally from a 10-point halftime deficit. Liberty led 17-7 at the half thanks to an offense that racked up 235 total yards. But the Spartan defense stiffened in the second half, while Riddick and a big special teams return helped the Spartans rally. NSU scored twice within 1:10 early in the third to take the lead. Riddick capped an 80-yard drive with a 10-yard TD run. After Liberty punted on its next possession, Keith Johnson gave NSU its first lead of the game with an 83-yard punt return TD. NSU’s two-point conversion try failed, but NSU claimed a 19-17 advantage with 10:03 left in the third quarter. But Liberty return man Kevin Fogg had the answer. He ran back a Dylan Shaddix punt 77 yards for a Flames’ touchdown, putting Liberty ahead 24-19 with 6:07 left in the third. Things looked bleak for the Spartans when they mishandled the ensuing kickoff and took over possession at their own 2. But NSU drove 98 yards in 16 plays. Riddick capped it with a 2-yard TD run, his third score of the day, to put NSU ahead 25-24 with 12:45 remaining in the game. The Spartan defense then came up with clutch stops to seal the win. Lynden Trail forced Liberty quarterback Brian Hudson to fumble. Linebacker Marcell Coke scooped up the loose ball and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown with 3:30 left, giving NSU a 31-24 lead. The Flames had one more chance. Backup quarterback Josh Woodrum drove the Flames 52 yards all the way down to the NSU 1-yard line with less than 20 seconds remaining. But on fourth down, Woodrum’s pass intended for Nicky Fualaau was knocked away by NSU safety Keenan Lambert with 11 seconds left, and the Spartans ran out the clock.

2012 Game by Game Recaps (cont’d) GAME 3: HOWARD 37, #22 NSU 36 (OT) Sept. 15, 2012 Dick Price Stadium • Norfolk, Va.
GAME 4: OHIO 44, NSU 10 Sept. 22, 2012 Athens, Ohio • Peden Stadium
Howard’s Julien David blocked the potential game-tying extra point in overtime, helping the Bison escape with a 37-36 win over Norfolk State at Dick Price Stadium. The 22nd-ranked Spartans (2-1, 0-1 MEAC) spotted Howard (2-1, 1-0) a 23-0 lead in the second half only to mount a furious rally on force overtime on a 38-yard Everett Goldberg field goal which knotted the score at 30-all with five seconds left in regulation. Howard received the ball to start the overtime and needed just three plays to score, with quarterback Greg McGhee plunging in from 2 yards out. Parker Munoz’s extra point gave the Bison a 37-30 lead. NSU then had its chance in overtime, and scored in six plays. A pass interference penalty on Howard kept the drive alive, and freshman Brendon Riddick scored on a 4-yard run to cut the Howard deficit to 37-36. But on the extra point, the Bison had several players time the kick perfectly, with David getting an outstretched hand on the ball to send the Spartans to defeat. Howard controlled the first two and a half quarters behind a strong running attack and a defense which kept the Spartans out of sync. Howard led 20-0 at the half and eventually took a 23-0 advantage on Parker Munoz’s 40-yard field goal midway through the third. NSU rallied behind the arm of Nico Flores, who passed for 327 of his 387 yards and all four of his touchdowns after halftime. He also drove NSU 61 yards in 13 plays to set up Goldberg’s tying kick late in regulation.
Ohio backup quarterback Derrius Vick passed for 199 yards and four scores, and Beau Blankenship ran for 109 yards to lead Ohio over NSU. Vick, playing in place of injured starter Tyler Tettleton, passed for three touchdowns in the first half to stake the Bobcats (4-0) to a big lead. The Spartans (2-2), meanwhile, were done in by five turnovers and 11 penalties, and also fell victim to Ohio’s excellent field position throughout. The Spartans received the kickoff to begin the game, but fumbled on their first play from scrimmage. Five plays later, Vick found Donte Foster for a 10-yard TD pass. On Ohio’s next possession, Ryan Clark returned an NSU punt 30 yards to the Spartan 30-yard line. Three plays later, Vick hit Blankenship for a 24-yard TD, making it 14-0. OU added a 49-yard Matt Weller field goal and a 2-yard TD run by Blankenship to go up 24-0 at the end of one quarter. The Bobcats added 10 more points in the second on Vick’s 15-yard scoring pass to Jordan Thompson and on a 40-yard Weller field goal with two seconds left in the quarter, which sent Ohio into the half up 34-0. Ohio padded its lead to 44-0 in the third quarter. The Bobcats capitalized on two NSU fumbles, the first of which led to Vick’s 13-yard TD pass to Foster and the second leading to a 31-yard Weller field goal. The Spartans showed fight in the fourth quarter and scored twice, including their first-ever touchdown in five games against Division I FBS foes. Randy Maynes capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a 7-yard scoring run with 4:28 left. Then after a short Ohio punt, the Spartans got one last chance to put some points on the board. Kicker Everett Goldberg obliged, hitting a 42-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the game.

GAME 6: DELAWARE STATE 20, NSU 17 Oct. 6, 2012 Dick Price Stadium • Norfolk, Va.
Host South Carolina State scored twice in the first quarter and the Bulldogs’ defense made it stand up, coming away with a 14-0 shutout victory over Norfolk State. SCSU wasted no time in getting on the board, marching 75 yards in six plays after receiving the opening kickoff. The drive was capped by Julius Pendergrass’ 4-yard TD run, which came one play after Richard Cue’s 46-yard pass completion to Lennel Elmore. The Bulldogs’ defense made it 14-0 later in the quarter. Cortney Ingram deflected a Jake Basmagian pass, and SCSU defensive back Kimario McFadden returned the interception 34 yards for another touchdown with 2:27 left in the quarter. That would be all the scoring in what turned into a grind-it-out defensive game that included a massive rainstorm that affected play in the second and third quarters. The Spartans committed four turnovers which hurt their cause, and didn’t pass midfield until the fourth quarter. Despite their offensive struggles, NSU still had a chance to make it interesting in the fourth quarter. Basmagian and running back Takeem Hedgeman helped moved the Spartans into SCSU territory for the first time with an 11-play, 83-yard drive. Basmagian completed his first three passes on the drive, and after a 4-yard gain by Hedgeman, the Spartans had first-and-goal at the SCSU 4. But the drive stalled, and Basmagian was picked off in the end zone, again by McFadden, to end NSU’s best scoring chance. The Spartans got just one more possession, in the final minute of the game, but couldn’t find the end zone.
Delaware State safety Davon Moore intercepted two passes, one leading to the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter and the other sealing the Hornets’ 20-17 victory over NSU in the 65th annual Fish Bowl Classic. The key sequence came early in the fourth quarter. With NSU leading 17-13, quarterback Jake Basmagian appeared to connect with Xavier Boyce for a 46-yard touchdown pass that would have put NSU ahead by 10. But Boyce was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for celebrating before he reached the end zone, which negated the touchdown. On the next play, Moore picked off a Basmagian pass and returned it 44 yards into NSU territory. Five plays later, DSU quarterback Nick Elko hit Justin Brewton for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Mitchell Ward’s point-after made it 20-17 with 10:01 remaining. The Spartans had two more chances to tie or take the lead. The first drive reached the Hornets’ 28, but on 4th-and-1, a fourth-down run by Brendon Riddick was stopped short of the first down. On their last drive, the Spartans drove all the way to the Hornets’ 33 with less than a minute left, but Moore again picked off a Basmagian pass. The Spartans held a 17-13 lead at halftime after the teams combined for 30 second-quarter points. NSU got on the board first on Riddick’s 13-yard TD run on the second play of the second quarter, but the Hornets tied it on the next drive on Elko’s 22-yard scoring strike to Justin Wilson. Later, DSU capitalized on good field position and took the lead on Ward’s 24-yard field goal with 9:13 left in the half. But the Spartans got the ball back and needed just three plays to score. On 3rd-and-4, Basmagian eluded pressure, rolled to his right and hit senior Takeem Hedgeman behind the DSU defense for an 86-yard TD pass. The teams traded field goals later in the quarter, with NSU’s Everett Goldberg hitting from 33 yards out and Ward connecting from 31 yards.
Hedgeman rushed for a career-high 148 yards on 26 carries for NSU. Safeties Keenan Lambert and Darrin Marrow and linebacker Marcell Coke all had interceptions for the Spartan defense. Score by Quarters Norfolk State South Carolina State

Last Series Meeting: NSU 34, Hampton 24 Game 7 • Oct. 15, 2011 • Dick Price Stadium • Norfolk, Va.
NSU 34 Hampton 24 Chris Walley passed for 265 yards and three touchdowns, and Randy Maynes ran 14 yards for the game-clinching touchdown with 7:43 left to lift Norfolk State to its third straight home win over Hampton in the State Farm Battle of the Bay. The win helps NSU (6-1, 4-0) match its best start since the 2007 team also started 6-1. Walley threw all of his TD passes in the first half, when the Spartans sprinted out to a 27-7 lead. Hampton scored 17 unanswered points to rally to within 27-24 in the fourth quarter, but Maynes’ first TD run as a Spartan helped clinch NSU’s fifth straight win, tying the program’s longest streak in the Division I era. NSU got on the board on its first possession as wideout Xavier Boyce turned a 3rd-and-20 screen pass into a 49-yard touchdown with 13:33 left in the first quarter. Ryan Estep’s extra point made it 7-0. A short Hampton punt into a stiff wind coupled with a 15-yard Marcus Cooperwood punt return set up NSU at the Pirate 29-yard line on the next possession. Five plays later, Walley hit Victor Hairston on an 8-yard TD strike to make it 14-0. Another short Hampton punt led to NSU’s next score, Estep’s 38-yard field goal with 4:14 left in the first quarter. The Pirates got on the board on the last play of the first quarter as David Legree hit Dyrri McCain for a 10-yard TD pass, cutting HU’s deficit to 10. But the Spartans scored the only 10 points of the second quarter to take a 27-7 lead into the half. Walley hit tight end Joe Hawkins on a 35yard touchdown pass with 8:13 left in the quarter. Hawkins’ first collegiate TD made it 24-7. Estep finished the first-half scoring with a 22-yard field goal, capping a 12-play, 86-yard drive to give NSU a 27-7 edge with 1:50 left in the half. The Pirates mounted a rally in the second half thanks to some big plays on offense and NSU miscues. A Pirate sack and short NSU punt gave the Pirates a short field to work with. Legree capped the drive with a 4-yard TD pass to Reginald Hicks on fourth down with 6:55 left in the third quarter, making it 27-14. A 64-yard completion from Legree to Isiah Thomas set up Hampton’s next touchdown, a 1-yard Jeremiah Schwartz run on the first play of the fourth quarter that sliced the Spartan lead to 27-21. Two NSU possessions later, Spartan running back Takeem Hedgeman fumbled, and HU defensive back Courtney Bridget recovered at the NSU 27. But the Spartan defense stiffened and limited the Pirates to a 34-yard Taurean Durham field goal that made it 27-24 with 10:09 left. The Spartans took the ensuing kickoff and needed just five plays to score, all of them runs, with a Hampton person foul mixed in. Maynes carried on the final two plays of the drive, covering 13 and 14 yards, to again put NSU ahead by two scores. The Spartan defense did the rest, forcing a turnover on downs and getting an interception by freshman safety Keenan Lambert to close out the win. Walley finished the game 20-of-35 for 265 yards with three scores and one interception to earn NSU MVP honors. Maynes had season highs of 16 carries for 72 yards for NSU, which outgained HU 473-303. Hairston had a game-high nine receptions for the Spartans, and Boyce had three grabs for 70 yards. Legree was harassed into 14-of-36 passing for 193 yards. The Pirates ran 38 times for just 110 yards. Defensively, linebackers Corwin Hammond and Onyemechi Anyaugo had 13 and 10 tackles, respectively, to pace the Spartans. Anyaugo added 1.5 tackles for loss. Fellow linebacker Hasan Craig had eight tackles, including a career-best 2.5 sacks.
