Norfolk State Quick Facts The Spartans earned a split of their weekend series against Morgan State to open MEAC play. The Bears led by as much as 19 in game 1 last Saturday before NSU closed the gap to as little as one. After the Spartans fell 78-74, they bounced back to win 89-85 on Sunday. Kashaun Hicks had 20 points in the first game, and J.J. Matthews added 21 in game 2, a contest in which the Spartans trailed by 12 in the second half before going up by 10. MSU closed the gap in the last few minutes with a flurry of buckets before the Spartans held on. Now 5-4 overall, the Spartans are getting double-digit scoring from Devante Carter (15.0), Matthews (11.1) and Jalen Hawkins (10.3), the latter of whom missed the first several games of the year. North Carolina Wesleyan Quick Facts The Battling Bishops, an NCAA Division III member, will be playing their fifth D-I team this season after losses to East Carolina (91-62) and Appalachian State (81-57) in early December. North Carolina Wesleyan also lost to Elon and Coastal Carolina in November, but those games did not count toward their overall 2-2 record. Despite those two D-I losses, the team still averages nearly 76 points per game and is +7 on the glass each time out. Wesleyan shoots 48 percent from the floor. Damon McDowell (21.8 points) and Isaiah Lewis (19.0 points, team-leading 6.8 rebounds) combine for more than half of the team’s scoring. Khalid Chavis is the team’s third player in double figures at 10.0 points per game.
