DISCRETIONARY GRANTS

9

Thanks to you - donors, volunteers, community partners and friends - we have much to celebrate in this year’s Annual Report. Our 2011-2012 Campaign saw a revival of our workplace efforts, with new campaigns in Cape Ann and Beverly. We launched a new Women in Action initiative focused on childhood obesity with a goal to educate, engage and expand new programs to address the need. The Campaign finished with a highly successful last minute push to close a potential Campaign shortfall and sustain grants to critical local programs.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT

19

Through your generosity, North Shore United Way awarded nearly one million dollars in community impact grants to 45 programs serving 32,575 people on the North Shore. Over 60 North Shore volunteers worked diligently with us to evaluate and determine grant awards across our three areas of community need: youth & child development, financial stability, and health. One third of the grants went to financial stability programs, including a new grant to Harborlight Community Partners. NSUW funding to Harborlight will enable them to scale up their housing development program by committing additional resources to creating new affordable housing on the North Shore. Other financial stability grants support an earned income tax credit program at Beverly Bootstraps Community Services translating a $5,000 investment into $155,000 tax credits for working families. Grant highlights include an evidence-based adult education program at Wellspring House and an affordable housing stability program for low-income families in Beverly and Gloucester through the North Shore Community Development Coalition. Thank you for the extraordinary commitment from the community, from our workplace employees, to local families, to our Board of Directors, to Women in Action, and over 100 NSUW volunteers – all that came together to impact real and lasting change on the North Shore. We are incredibly grateful for the shared sense of community and purpose by all our supporters.

COMMUNITY IMPACT AREAS The North Shore United Way (NSUW) funds a network of agencies and programs that collectively address critical needs within 3 Community Impact areas:

• YOUTH AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT • FINANCIAL STABILITY • HEALTH

It is this comprehensive approach that makes the North Shore United Way different from other local organizations. The way we fund programs means that your donation to NSUW can address more than one critical need and ultimately improve conditions for all.
