Mini Hooves Miniature Pony Studs Long Awaited Foal Success Story Flash ( Mini Hooves Grande Cavallino) was born at 6.00 pm on the 6th of January 2011. Roy and I waited long and patiently for our baby to be born by Sterling Bold as Brass out of our special girl Sunflower Park Libby's Rose. Out came a lovely little colt with a white star. We were so excited, he was perfect in every way, just what we wanted. A couple of days went by and we noticed he had slightly lax tendons in the hind legs we thought he just needs a little time to strengthen, nothing to worry about all, he will be ok. Before no time, his feet started growing really incorrectly with his heels rolling right under, his heels were also becoming very contracted and the angle of his feet were all wrong, his toes were pointed right up. We phoned our local vets who came out, they were quite concerned about the way little flash was standing and how his feet we growing, whether it was two late at only 6 weeks old to correct his problems was unknown. A specialist, who had seen several pictures of flashes feet and problems, came up with a solution. We were to make trailer shoes out of desert spoons to stand him in the correct position and bandage them on. We set flashy up with his new shoes taking them off every 6 or 7 days to corrective trim his feet, give his feet a rest for a night and on with his shoes the following day. After repeating the process for two months our long awaited baby flash has made a 100% recovery. We look forward to showing him in 2012/13. Deb and Roy (Mini Hooves Miniature Pony Stud)

STUD PROFILE
Willowmoss Miniature Pony Stud Est in 2003. Willowmoss Miniature Ponies started with the purchase of 2 mares and 2 stallions from my cousins. One of those is still here today Wyarna Dynairo (Wyarna Talino x Wyarna Dynasty). We are a small stud located in the Central West NSW. Comprising of just a few broodmares and 3 stallions. Dynairo is my Senior Stallion and will be with us for the rest of his life, he is a pleasure to own and stamps his foals with his temperament and movement.
Willowmoss Lily of the Valley (L) Champion Youngstock and Willowmoss Dynaska (R) Champion Miniature Pony Foal at the Bathurst Foal & Youngstock Show
My first bred pony, Willowmoss November Lily (Kaldora Mandala x Sire Unknown), is my head mare. She has produced me two stunning babies. Lily has not been shown since she was a foal due to a paddock injury. Willowmoss Lily of the Valley (Dynairo x Lily) is the first of the Willowmoss ponies to bring home the broads, she has her fathers arrogance and superb movement and excels in the Willowmoss Dynaska ring. Valley was first shown as a 3 year old and is a 3 time Supreme and Multi Champion pony. Valley has excelled herself as a broodmare as well and produced a stunning little filly Willowmoss Saphire of D Valley. Valleys full brother Dynaska as also brought home the broads as a weanling. Billy as he is known at home , has taken his mums gentle nature. I look forward to his show career and being a future sire as he is Dynairos only colt anywhere in Aust.
Willowmoss Lily of the Valley
Over 2011/12 there has been some new horses come and I look forward to a long association with them both in the ring as well as broodmares.

PONY PROFILE AKONEA MELBA’S BOY (Jindalee Pippin x Mandalay Melba) I was informed by Joan Walsh in 1984 that Jindalee Pippin was for sale. Unfortunately, when I visited to purchase Pippin, he had been sold. Instead of returning home empty handed, I purchased Mandalay Melba with a little black colt at foot. I named this little black colt Akonea Melba’s Boy. From the first day I bought him home, we developed a great and inseparable relationship. I have shown “Boy” all around NSW and competed with him at Sydney Royal for 21 years in both led and harness. “Boy” has won numerous Champions and Supremes in the Australian Miniature Pony Classes at many shows, particularly as a Harness Pony. Also registered as a Shetland, “Boy” would do well under international judges in the harness classes. One memorable occasion at the old Sydney Royal Showground (Moore Park), “Boy” was entered in the Pair of Harness Ponies with Joan Walsh’s stallion Wanamara Jaime. Joan and I went to Centennial Park to exercise the ponies—Joan was driving and I was riding on the back of the viceroy. The gate into Centennial Park was closed, Joan asked “What do we do”, I told her “To keep going” on the roads Akonea Melba’s Boy and Icie at the 1999 Penrith Show around Centennial Park until we found an open gate. All gates were closed and Joan started to complain about the traffic we were driving in, I told Joan “Not to panic, I can jump off anytime!”. Joan drove the ponies around Paddington until we reached the entry into Sydney Showground at the opposite end to where we started, this entry was being patrolled by a policeman and I told Joan “The cops have got you, I’m leaving!”. The policeman were very understanding allowing us to enter the showground—”Boy” and “Jaime” were very well behaved despite their handler’s panicking and playing up. “Boy” has a beautiful temperament as such that one time, he was incorrectly harnessed by a few helpers. I noticed “Boy” was fidgeting, I asked the steward to check the harness who told me that she knew nothing about harness. The judge asked me to come forward, I completed my workout and “Boy” won the class—the judge continued with the Champion straight after my class so I was unable to check the harness. “Boy” won the Champion, still fidgeting in his harness. After the Champion, I checked his harness to discover he had been incorrectly harnessed with the surcingle attached to the girth. “Boy” passed his lovely temperament onto his progeny with many successfully competing as Harness Ponies in both Australian Miniature Pony and Shetland classes at numerous shows including Sydney Royal. “Boy” was retired after competing at his 21st Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2005. South Western Appaloosa & All Breeds Performance Club Inc—May Show The South Western Appaloosa & All Breeds Performance Club Inc (SWA&ABPC) holds regular shows in the undercover arena at Young Showground, in the central western region of NSW, two hours northwest of Canberra. On Sunday 6th May, with judge Sharon Charlton, the club held the first of two futurities shows (the next one to be held in June), and despite the icy cold weather with fog and temperatures of a mere three degrees at 11am, the Miniature horse and pony community had a good representation. Champion Miniature Horse went to Kismet Supreme Warrior, owned by Meambie Miniatures and exhibited by Amy Collins. 'Warrior' placed highly in all his classes throughout the day and went on to be runner up Supreme Halter horse, beaten out by multi supreme Appaloosa mare Sheez Innocent Badlands Disco Diva (K. Badman) - Hunter classes Enough. Meambie Miniatures also exhibited Kenlee Park Awesome's Lord Valentine, who was winner of the 2yo Halter Futurity and Mini Six Bar jumping event, plus Reserve Champion Miniature Horse, as well as placing highly in several other classes. Champion Miniature Pony went to Shangdamara Little Apache, who was also winner of the Hunter Jumper performance event, and placed second in the Six Bar jumping event, owned and exhibited by Hazel Pertovt. Reserve Champion Miniature Pony was Demelza Bradshaw's Joleen Park Harley. 'Harley' was also second placegetter in the Newcomer Showmanship class (it's terrific to see the little guys getting in and having a go at showmanship, which is traditionally thought of as only a western horse class). Demelza also exhibBadlands Disco Diva (K. Badman) - ited Miniature Shetland mare, Ellem Code of Grace, who Lungeline classes placed third in her class. When asked how she enjoyed the show, Demelza said, 'The SWA&ABPC ran a fabulous show, definitively worth the 2 1/2 hour drive!' High Point Miniature of the show was Badlands Disco Diva, owned and exhibited by Kay Badman. Despite having competed at a harEllem Code of Grace (D. Bradshaw) ness event the day beforehand, 'Diva' found the energy to win the Miniature Lungeline, Miniature Showmanship and Led Trail (performance class), as well as placing second in the Hunter Jumper class. The SWA&ABPC's next show is in June, and is open to all led and ridden breeds, but also features both halter and performance classes for the Miniatures who are registered Joeleen Park Harley (D. Bradshaw) with any Miniature society. Horse’s Catch Colds Too! Written by Dr John Kohnke Reprinted with the kind permission of Weekly Times Now www.weeklytimesnow.com.au FROM advanced medicines to good old-fashioned TLC, there are a number of ways to care for a horse with a cold, as DR JOHN KOHNKE explains Like humans, weanlings, horses in training and aged horses are at risk of “catching a cold” during winter, as aerosol viruses are more easily spread and the animal’s immune system may be compromised by the stress of cold weather. The respiratory system is paramount to a horse’s ability to exercise and perform. Many horses exhibit only very subtle signs, such as a slight wheeze or cough, as the only outward indication of a potentially debilitating airway disease. The lower respiratory tract in the lungs is subjected to heavy assault during exercise from a variety of inhaled bacterial and viral micro-organisms, as well as allergens including moulds and dust. These can increase airway reaction and excess mucus production as a form of bronchitis. Other threats can come from pollutants such as ammonia, an irritating gas released from stable bedding which lowers lung immunity, and cold air inhaled during early morning training without adequate pre-exercise warm-up, especially in winter. There are a number of infective organisms that can cause inflammation and low-grade infection in the respiratory tract. In Australia, the Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1, EHV-4 sub-types), commonly referred to as the “stable virus”, is the most widespread viral disease, producing “flu-like” symptoms. Recognise respiratory symptoms early IT IS important to recognise the symptoms of EHV before the virus multiplies in the throat lining and tonsil cells and breaks out to be inhaled. The normal incubation period is from four to seven days before an infected horse develops the external symptoms of a “runny nose” or a cough when exercising. The earliest signs, within the first 36-48 hours after infection, include a slight loss of appetite, reduced ability to exercise, depression and an increased early morning (before exercise) body temperature above 38.5°C. Resting the horse in this initial early stage can help the immune system fight the virus and limit its multiplication in the nasal cells and throat lining. Diagnosis of a ‘cold’ SIGNS of a nasal discharge, reduced appetite and an occasional cough develop four to six days after the initial EHV infection. Once the virus has multiplied, it triggers an immune reaction, with increased airway-cleaning mucus and fluid in the lungs. Managing a ‘cold’ MONITOR the horse’s temperature and appetite daily. Ensure the horse has shelter and a warm rug. Separate it from other horses in the immediate vicinity – especially in stables and yards, where horses can come into nose contact over a fence. Place all feed on the floor – dampen all feed, including hay, to assist nasal and throat drainage. Damp feed will be less likely to irritate an inflamed tonsil or throat and often helps to lift the appetite.
29
Only remove patches of wet and soiled bedding and replace with slightly dampened shavings or sawdust to reduce dust. Try to avoid straw bedding, as this is more likely to contain tiny mould and dust particles which can be inhaled into the lower airways. Cease exercise for at least 48 hours to reduce the risk of lower airway assault with virus particles – if the horse recovers, re-introduce light exercise after three or four days, but maintain feeding below chest height. Antibiotics, bronchodilators and mucus-clearing preparations THESE
preparations
are
only
available
from
your
vet.
They are usually only prescribed following a clinical appraisal of the horse’s respiratory function, or perhaps a scope of the lower windpipe area to determine the amount or number of strands of mucus accumulated in the lower part of the windpipe. A Broncho Alveolar Lavage ( referred to as a BAL or “lung wash”) may be collected by passing a special BAL tube down the windpipe into the rear end of the lung bronchi. Mucolytic agents (these act to liquefy thick mucus in the throat and lower airways) and bronchodilators (which act to relax constricted airways to facilitate breathing and mucus drainage) are often combined. These can help expel thick mucus from the lower airways by head-down airway drainage when feeding or grazing. Consult your vet for advice on the selection, dose rate and treatment time relative to the type, secondary complications and response. Cough preparations THERE are a number of cough elixirs (thick, sugary-flavoured syrups which stick to the throat membranes and soothe the throat to reduce irritation and the stimulus to cough), just like the over-the-counter cough medicines available for humans. Immune aids A NUMBER of injectable immune stimulating agents are available which can aid the status of a young horse, a horse in hard work with a low white blood count or an aged horse where immunity may wane. Garlic powder WIDELY touted as an immunity-boosting nutrient, garlic may have benefits as a natural insect repellent in the biting insect season, but has not been credited with assisting the immune system of horses at the dose rates (20g daily) often recommended. Echinacea ECHINACEA is claimed to support the immune system in humans but, in controlled trials in Canada, it was found to have no benefit at all in horses at commonly recommended dose rates in feed or supplements. Vitamin C VITAMIN C has a role as an anti-oxidant in the blood and muscles during exercise to regenerate Vitamin E and early studies in humans suggested that high doses assist the immune response. Vaccination A VACCINE has been developed in Australia and available from vets for immunisation against EHV. It is recommended for horses which travel frequently or are exposed to EHV infections. Dr John Kohnke has been an equine vet for more than 30 years and has written two books on equine nutrition. He is a nutritional consultant to many horse trainers and studs.
