Growing the arts in New Albany NEW ALBANY — From begging for artists in 2006 to an expansion this year, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s Art on the Parish Green has grown in size and prestige. The two-day event, which takes place this weekend, is a must-attend Jason Thomas, Editor festival for connoisseurs of art and food. From 19 artists then to 80 artists now, Art on the Parish Green has grown from its original confines on Eleventh Street in New Albany from Main Street to Market to expand into a section of Market Street, Danielle Grady writes in today’s cover story. The festival’s size is not the only thing that has changed. Begging for artists is not happening anymore. Coordinator Fran Fach said committee mem-

bers are still turning away artists eager to claim a spot to sell their work. While Art on the Parish Green has increased in size, it has also become more selective in the artists it features, Grady explains. The annual event has become an important attraction and economic driver for downtown New Albany, says the Rev. Rick Kautz, who began leading St. Paul’s almost three years ago. “The downtown area is our community and we want that community to grow and develop and be a wonderful place to live and work and worship,” Fach told Grady. Done and done — evident by the real reason Art on Parish Green was established. Proceeds benefit Shepherd’s Kitchen Feeding Ministry. Now that’s a masterpiece. — Jason Thomas is the editor of SoIn. Growing Green Annual Art on the Parish Green festival increases in size, prestige

By DANIELLE GRADY danielle.grady@newsandtribune.com EW ALBANY — The members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the artists they support all have different memories of the early years of the annual Art on the Parish Green festival. Louise Gohmann, the original festival coordinator, remembers begging artists to join the event and spacing out the booths when only 19 agreed (there are now over 80). Fran Fach, the current coordinator, said musical acts performed on nothing but grass (they currently carry their instruments on a stage sheltered by a roomy tent). Even the Rev. Rick Kautz, who began leading the congregation almost three years ago, said what the church now advertises as “vendors” used to mean a lone guy flipping hamburgers (this year’s festival will feature the delicacies of Louisville food trucks). Art on the Parish Green, a two-day event that resembles a community festival more than a church fundraiser, primarily features booths operated by skilled artists and handcrafted food vendors. Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church organized the first festival in 2006. The festival, originally confined to Eleventh Street in New Albany from Main Street to Market, has found new growth this year and expanded into a section of Market Street. This will open up room for more booths, but Fach said committee members are still turning away artists eager to claim a spot to sell their work. While Art on the Parish Green has increased in size, it has also become more selective in the artists it features, said Fach. “That also helps us raise the quality of the festival itself,” she said. Roxy Lentz, a Clarksville jeweler who crafts her necklaces and bracelets from repurposed metal, has sold her work at every Art on the Parish Green festival since its debut year. Nine years ago when Gohmann was desperate for artists, Lentz was the first to say yes. Lentz said she feels “honored” as the

festival continues and her presence remains. She’s also noticed the event’s changing standards. Fach said artists must send pictures of their work before they are accepted and all artists need to be at their booths during their festival. “It’s kind of a win-win situation,” she said. “The artist gains followers and the public gets to meet people who really create art.” St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has a history of promoting local artists and their endeavors. In addition to Art on the Parish Green, the church hosts gallery shows and a performing arts series called Parlor Stories. “Historically, you go back to the church and there was no separation between the art and the sacred,” said Kautz, a theater major before he became a priest. “All art was sacred.”

Kautz said he wants to return to that state. But Art on the Parish Green isn’t just about the artists. It contributes to the section of New Albany it exists in. “The downtown area is our community and we want that community to grow and develop and be a wonderful place to live and work and worship,” said Fach. Beneath its art-centered exterior, Art on the Parish Green is actually a fundraiser for Shepherd’s Kitchen Feeding Ministry which provides meals to a steady stream of people every Friday throughout the year. Volunteers from Shepherd’s Kitchen often help out with the festival. Gohmann said a “half dozen or more” parishioners work on the committee responsible for planning Art on the Parish Green. More will jump in to help on the weekend of the event. Still, it’s an intensive effort — especially as the event grows every year, she said. Gohmann has a favorite quote from Margaret Mead that she used to recite at meetings before she gave up her coordinator responsibilities. It even appeared on the event’s first brochure. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
