WARS Six photographers shoot to win in a New Times photography competition BY ASHLEY SCHWELLENBACH

L

ast fall, New Times put out a call for photographers willing to engage in spirited battle for the title of Chief-Head-Honcho Photographer. Forty-six answered the call to arms, and from that talented pool six were chosen: Brittany App (appsphotography. com), a professional photographer with epic dreads. Atascadero photographer Adrianne Bonafede (adriannebonafede.com). Kamil Baranowski (kamilkonrad.com), an interactive web designer, graphic artist, and photographer from Shell Beach. Joseph Gorman (joegormanphoto.com), a digital editor and photographer from Grover Beach—quietest of the six. Cuesta College student Will Headley (willheadley. com), the youngest of the lot. And retiree and Morro Bay resident Howard Ignatius (howardignatius.com). The parameters were simple. The war consisted of six individual battles: four location shoots between April and August and two take-home challenges to

be completed by Aug. 15. Two days before the shoots, the contestants were sent the location. But until they arrived, they had no idea what they would find there and had only one hour to photograph. And when the hour was up, they had just one week to edit and turn in their photographs. These are their battle trophies, presented anonymously to ensure the winner is selected on merit alone. It’s your job to decide who won the war. You’ll find a ballot on page 47. Select your favorite body of work from each of the six challenges, along with the very best photograph from the entire war. Ballots are due to New Times by Monday, Oct. 4, at 5 p.m. Ballots are also available online and can be returned to photogwars@newtimesslo.com. Managing Editor Ashley Schwellenbach is more warrior than photographer. Send mighty pens to aschwellenbach@newtimesslo.com.

challenge #1 G.I.s and Slide Film

The first challenge took place on April 16. The photographers were asked to arrive at the New Times office in downtown SLO sans camera and equipment. Once there, they were given a manual camera, a Canon AE1, loaded with Tungsten slide film. We gave them a box of props including GI army figurines, a table, a light meter, and only five shots.

Forest of Flying Daggers

On May 16, the photographers entered the Los Osos Oak Forest and encountered 10 aerial fabric dancers: nine from Suspended Motion SLO and independent aerialist Ryah Cooley. The scene was inspired by a bamboo forest fight scene from House of Flying Daggers—with hair and makeup generously styled by the rockin’ ladies of HepKat Beauty Parlor. Models were Sam Artho-Bentz, Stephanie Bailey, Gigi Ballinger, Caren Carreau, Ryah Cooley, Hailley Cooper, Helen Dickenson, Sophie Mcgurk, Melody Samuels, and Elizabeth Stevenson.

Aftermath and vino

On July 25, Cass Winery in Paso Robles opened its doors to our six photographers and nine models styled to represent the surrealistic aftermath of a war. Tigerlily Salon transformed the models into ballroom dancers, troubled writers, beautiful and bedraggled women, and a single dragon lady. The day was long, but the setting was beautiful—luxurious even. Models were Jennifer Davis, Christopher Ellwood, Jessica Freedman, Tanya Gallardo, Brett Hartt, Evelyn Kroeker, Dora Mountain, Nick Powell, and Nick Walter. Stylists were Lisa Bukowski, Savannah Casteel, Larella Ellsworth (owner), Katie Price, Josh Ralph, and Danice Schaefer.

PHOTOG WARS challenge #4 battlefield

For their final location shoot, on Aug. 1 the photographers descended upon Laguna Lake—the mammoth field behind the dog park, the gazebo, even the water itself—where 18 models, each individually styled to represent a particular genre or type of warrior, did battle. Pirate against warrior princess. Boxer against mob enforcer. There were so many models, in fact, that San Luis Beauty College and Bladerunner Salon had to team up to adorn them in their war paint. Models were Dylan Black, Seth Black, Ursula Black, Kaeli Cruz, Amanda Flom, Jayde Forzetting, Rainey Forzetting, Maddy Hosick, Alesha Ingram, Alex Mendoza-Welsch, Katelyn Moon, April Murphy, Hannah Rushing, Lena Rushing, Travis Rushing, Alicia Smith, and Cruz Trujillo. Stylists were (Bladerunner) Ariel Adams, Jose Augustin, Briana Gros-Manina, Jon Haddeland, Melaine Johnson, Todd LeMay, Sarah Marshall, Tasha Smulders, and Ben Torres. (Beauty College) Nicole Perez, Amanda Guerra, Mandy Stephen, Ziggy Guardado and Heidi Montgomery.

BILL COSBY

Jeremy Seifert has become an unlikely hunger activist. Some friends of his showed up at his LA apartment one day with bags full of gourmet food from the dumpsters behind the local Trader Joe’s market. Jeremy was shocked and intrigued. Soon after, he waited until midnight and hit a dumpster himself, bagging delicious meat, veggies, eggs, cheese - enough to feed his family for days. Jeremy started going regularly, and decided to turn his dumpster diving adventures into a movie. But his movie DIVE! isn’t a how-to video; Jeremy is digging deep for answers. Why is so much edible food wasted, thrown away behind hundreds of grocery stores across the country every night? Jeremy talks about taking his fight up the Trader Joe’s corporate ladder. Inspired by a curiosity about our country’s careless habit of sending food straight to landfills, the multi award-winning documentary DIVE! follows filmmaker Jeremy Seifert and friends as they dumpster dive in the back alleys and gated garbage receptacles of Los Angeles’ supermarkets. In the process, they salvage thousands of dollars worth of edible food – resulting in an inspiring documentary that is equal parts entertainment, guerilla journalism and call to action.

Leonard Pitts, Jr.

Sat., Oct. 2, 8 pm

Leonard Pitts, Jr. joined The Miami Herald in 1991 as its pop music critic. Since 1994, he has penned a syndicated column of commentary on pop culture, social issues and family life. His most recent book, Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood, was released in May, 1999. Pitts was recently awarded the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, the first for this esteemed journalist. Twice each week, millions of newspaper readers around the country seek out his rich and uncommonly resonant voice. In a word, he connects with them. Nowhere was this demonstrated more forcefully than in the response to his initial column on the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Pitts’ column, “We’ll Go Forward From This Moment,” an angry and defiant open letter to the terrorists, circulated the globe via the Internet. It generated upwards of 30,000 emails, and has since been set to music, reprinted in poster form, read on television by Regis Philbin and quoted by Congressman Richard Gephardt as part of the Democratic Party’s weekly radio address. Leonard Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. Since 1995, he has lived in Bowie, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D. C., with his wife and five children.

IT’S TIME TO CLEAR THE AIR ABOUT HEALTHCARE IN OUR COMMUNITY Recently, an ad appeared in this paper on behalf of Coastal Communities Physician Network (CCPN) as a care alternative for CALPERS members and other enrollees in HMO Plans. The ad touted their network of local physicians; but what it failed to mention is that CCPN is not locally based. In fact, it is owned by a single shareholder who resides in Marina del Rey. SLO Select IPA, on the other hand, is owned by local physicians who reside in your community – and have been your neighbors and trusted healthcare professionals for years. It is true that several former physicians of SLO Select have signed contracts with CCPN. However, many did

not sign until being offered very large bonuses in the thousands of dollars. SLO Select will stand united and not participate in the game of “Buying Physicians.” CCPN claims it wants to contract with all hospitals for services; but some hospitals are understandably wary of CCPN’s history of contentious relationships with hospitals elsewhere in California and other states. Choosing your healthcare providers is one of the most important decisions you can make for your family.

Our promise to you is that we will deliver the best care available while keeping our healthcare dollars here in our community.
