It feels like winter’s still here, doesn’t it? Spring came, but that Central Coast weather hasn’t seemed to come alive just yet. It almost feels like summer will never come, but it will, and with it will come the sun—hopefully. Even if the sun never comes out, though, we’ve got the fun locked down in our annual Summer Guide! Arts Editor Caleb Wiseblood pulled all the hot events together into one place for your pleasure—from food and wine festivals to outdoor performances, arts classes, kids camps, and more [13]

• President Joe Biden signed U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal ’s (D-Santa Barbara) Clean Airport Agenda, a slate of bipartisan bills aimed at helping curb the threat of “forever chemicals” near airports, according to a May 17 statement from Carbajal’s office. The Clean Airport Agenda includes Carbajal’s Pollution-Free Aviation Sites Act, which establishes a grant program to support airports as they replace firefighting foams containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It also contains the Save Our Airports Reporting Act, which requires regular progress reports from federal agencies as airports phase out these forever chemicals. “Clean and safe drinking water is paramount to protecting the health of our communities. But our regional airports pose risks to that threat through no fault of their own. Their use of foams containing PFAS chemicals was a requirement of the federal government, and so we should ensure the federal government is helping them phase out these chemicals once and for all,” Carbajal said in the statement.

• U.S. Sens. Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler (both D-California) announced legislation to rename the Cottonwood Visitor Center at Joshua Tree National Park as the U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein Visitor Center, according to a May 15 statement from Padilla’s office. The bill had a hearing on May 15 in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee with the National Park Service. The Cottonwood Visitor Center is located in the southern part of Joshua Tree National Park, 7 miles north of Interstate 10, and serves as the first contact station for millions of visitors entering the park from the interstate each year. The visitor center is the gateway to many hiking trails, including the Cottonwood Springs area. Feinstein was a champion for protecting California’s public lands, from the redwoods of the Headwaters and the San Francisco Bay, to Lake Tahoe and, most notably, the California desert. She authored the California Desert Protection Act of 1994 that created the Mojave National Preserve, expanded and redesignated Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Monuments as national parks, and designated more than 7 million acres of California desert as wilderness. She also sponsored subsequent legislation to protect natural areas and wildlife corridors in the desert, leading to the creation of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, the Mojave Trails National Monument, the Sand to Snow National Monument, and the Castle Mountains National Monument. “Senator Feinstein was widely regarded as a great protector of the California desert, having grown up with fond childhood memories of the desert and subsequently working to protect the landscape throughout her Senate career,” Padilla said in the statement. “Thirty years after the enactment of Sen. Feinstein’s landmark California Desert Protection Act, which created Joshua Tree National Park, I can think of no better way to honor her legacy than by ensuring that the park’s visitors are reminded of Sen. Feinstein’s enduring public lands legacy.”

• At the Vatican Climate Summit, Gov, Gavin Newsom spoke before other governors, mayors, and civic and faith leaders from around the globe, highlighting California’s nation-leading efforts on clean energy and calling out Big Oil, according to a May 15 statement from Newsom’s office. “Fossil fuel companies have been deceiving us. They’ve known the science. They’ve denied the science. They’ve delayed advancement. But we have the capacity to address this issue at a global level, and we all must bring the moral authority that is needed and that this time demands,” Newsom said during the summit. While in Vatican City, Newsom and first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom had an audience with Pope Francis who acknowledged California’s leadership on the climate crisis and the state’s moratorium on the death penalty while the governor thanked the pope for his advocacy on climate, according to the governor’s office. The pope, Newsom, and other leaders signed a Planetary Compact aimed at accelerating global efforts to combat the climate crisis and build climate resilience. m

Odor, environmental concerns delay decision on Buellton cannabis project

The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission voted 4-0 (with 5th District Commissioner Vincent Martinez absent) during its May 8 meeting to push its decision on a cannabis cultivation project near Buellton to July 10 so the project could further analyze odor, viewshed, and other environmental impacts.

“I’m very cognizan, because I’ve been in the middle of it, of the agricultural enterprise ordinance, the recreation master plan, and our encouragement of agricultural tourism—farm stays and campgrounds and other things that don’t exist right now, but we’re trying to encourage them,” said 3rd District Commissioner John Parke. “Where they are located in relation to cannabis, so I’m very concerned about this becoming a cannabis corridor.”

Thomas and Tami Kopitnik submitted their application to the county in 2021 for a land use permit for Tat Ventures LLC, a 3.83-acre outdoor cannabis cultivation operation, which would be grown in pots under non-electrified hoop houses with no permanent structures, according to the staff report. The Kopitnik’s ranch is 360 acres total, divided into a main ranch, backcountry area, and the grow field, said Kristin Larson, an attorney representing the couple.

Santa Barbara County Planner Willow Brown told commissioners that the project met all of the county’s environmental and viewshed requirements—with plans to plant native vegetation to shield the hoop tunnels from view, no concerns with animal impacts, and 75 percent less water use than previous agricultural operations. However, Parke had lingering concerns about odor abatement and water absorption of runoff from hoop houses and their viewshed impacts.

“Anybody who’s been alive in the last two years realized we have episodic rains here, and I know we’ve had an incident of hoop houses being destroyed in floods and causing floods and so forth,” he said. “I’m going to want a better answer to the question, to tell you the truth, than, ‘It should be absorbed by surrounding soil.’”

“We don’t have a policy [on fee waivers to use city-owned facilities], and we need one,” City Administrator Todd Bodem said at the Guadalupe City Council’s April 23 meeting, during a discussion on the Touch of Style Car Club’s appeal.

City Attorney Philip F. Sinco described the issue as “somewhat long-standing,” as the City Council has dealt with similar requests, usually from nonprofits, “several times over the years,” starting in 2018. Prior to a fee increase resolution passed in 2018, the city didn’t normally charge nonprofits to use city-owned facilities for fundraisers and other events.

At the City Council’s May 14 meeting, Sinco presented staff’s proposal for a formal fee waiver policy, applicable for governmental agencies, nonprofits, and “certain community service organizations” that aren’t nonprofits “but provide benefits to the Guadalupe community,” according to the staff report.

Under the proposed policy, these types of groups have the opportunity to apply to host public events at city-owned facilities, including Guadalupe City Hall’s auditorium, without paying the city an hourly fee. Private events— regardless of whether the host is a nonprofit or not—are not eligible for the waiver, and the policy requires each applicant to state its reason or reasons for pursuing the waiver, such as financial hardships.

While this project doesn’t need an odor abatement plan because of its zoning, Parke said that he would like to see the commission use its discretion to look into the odor’s impact on neighbors.

“I’ll be up-front, if we had to vote today I would vote to reject the project because I don’t think we can make the finding, … and I’m basing that on what I heard today and I’ve heard over the years—where I’ve heard every single other cannabis project and what they claim will happen and won’t happen,” Parke said. “There are scents that come from the growth of it.”

While 4th District Commissioner Roy Reed doesn’t like seeing hoop houses either, he said they are “a reasonable part of agriculture” and can increase potential for raising certain crops.

“I wonder if these hoop houses were used for caneberries, blueberries, if the objections would be similarly great with respect to drainage from hoop houses. In the Santa Maria Valley we have thousands of acres of hoop houses, but yet during the rainy season we have not yet been washed into the sea,” Reed said.

He added that he can appreciate the odor impact concerns, but he said that odor is a very subjective issue and people will complain to “any degree of odor.”

“I think many objections can be overcome, but with regard to the odor element, when the county has created a very rigorous ordinance that requires applicants a great deal of time and expense when we are faced with a project that seems to rise to that level, we have an obligation to move and approve,” Reed said. “Since this is in Commissioner Parke’s district, … while I would never support a motion to reject, I could be agreeable to supporting a motion to extend and revisit this at a later time.”

Guadalupe starts event fee relief program for nonprofits, community service groups

Mayor Ariston Julian suggested that applicants summarize their reasoning in some form of writing without the initial bank statement requirement, as the City Council will have the power to deny requests or ask for supplemental info on a case-by-case basis.

While the policy was designed to cut certain costs for groups to host public events in Guadalupe, one condition of the fee waiver requires the event host to pay the city a refundable security deposit, to be returned as long as “the terms of rental were agreed to,” Sinco said.

“In other words, [they’re refunded] if there’s no damage caused through malfeasance, or failure to supervise attendees, or failure to clean up adequately if that was part of the arrangement,” Sinco said.

With a 5-0 vote from the City Council, staff’s proposed fee waiver policy passed unanimously.

Santa Maria Firefighters advocate for Measure U to fund salary increases

When they sold that to the community and the community taxed itself, they were promised in the literature that it would be to maintain and enhance public safety, and that includes fire.”

“The city is no different from many other cities in facing serious financial challenges. The city will continue to move forward with downtown revitalization, keep the peace, grow more businesses and wonderful programs and services for residents,” the staff report said. “In addition, the goals for the coming year are to balance the budget and retain and recruit the best talent possible, all while becoming even more efficient.”

Robles argued that these priorities should include the firefighters’ salaries and that the city has the funds in reserves in order to invest in those performing public service.

“They prioritize buildings, they’re very proud of building all of these buildings, but buildings don’t provide services, people do,” he said. “Since they’re going into these budget discussions and projecting doom and gloom, that’s another tactic for negotiations. They can say, ‘Look we don’t have the money.’”

“There’s threats to impose, but they seem to have backed off of that,” Robles said. “I can say emphatically that Local 2020 has been and continues to be willing to sit down and work things out, but as time goes on and gets into the next budget year, the average pay is shifting.”

Santa Maria firefighters are the second lowest paid fire department in the TriCounties area, creating retention and recruitment issues for the department managing Santa Barbara County’s largest city, according to previous Sun reporting. While advocating for higher pay, firefighters have been adamant about using Measure U—a sales tax measure dedicated to enhancing public safety—toward salaries instead of onetime projects.

“The city is making this worse every time they fail to adequately pay their firefighters because other communities continue to raise the bar, and it’s going to take Santa Maria that much more to catch up so they need to fix this,” Robles said. “I equate it to plumbing in your house: If you continue to ignore a leak or rattle … it becomes an emergency fix that costs far more than if you dealt with it in the beginning; that’s where they are.

Shakira Miracle wants people to dream big when applying for the Santa Barbara County Food Action Network’s Food Justice Microgrant.

“What I find so shocking and yet crystal clear is that we have lost the ability to dream, to be able to imagine, to have space held so we can think outside the box and really address what’s important rather than constantly thinking about what’s urgent,” said Miracle, the Santa Barbara County Food Action Network (SBCFAN) executive director.

SBCFAN is a nonprofit that works to ensure that all county residents have access to locally grown, nourishing, and culturally relevant food; sustainability and agroecology are championed in the ag sector; and both businesses and the community thrive, according to its mission statement. It began in 2016 when Santa Barbara County’s Food Action Plan was published—which was designed to provide recommendations for how the county grows, distributes, and consumes food. The plan is framed around investment in the food economy, health and wellness, community, and foodshed.

The nonprofit connects people across sectors to build a greater network to fill food system gaps and mobilizes for food policy changes at the local, state, and federal levels.

“We are constantly being hit by external shocks—climactic, economic, social, or otherwise. At the same time, we should plan for the long term,” Miracle said. “Food systems take generations to get where we need; we don’t think it’ll take as long to interconnect communities across production to consumption, but it’s going to take a while. It will take less time if more of us are engaging with our regional food system.”

The microgrant program seeks to address inequities and vulnerabilities in the local food system by funding local residents working toward building a more resilient food system. The project or program can be in its beginning stages or already established—including new ideas, pilot projects, or improvement, according to SBCFAN.

Applicants are eligible for funding of up to $5,000 per grant, according to SBCFAN. People have until 11:59 p.m. on May 31 to apply, and their application will be reviewed by SBCFAN’s grant review committee.

“We want to see instead of someone coming in from elsewhere and going into communities, the communities themselves are building food system resilience, whether it’s seed sharing, a community garden, or a food business,” Miracle said. “Maybe you want to do research as a farmer and test agroecological

practices. We want to make sure that people are in fact in the communities that they are wanting to do this work.”

The grant program began in 2020 when SBCFAN regranted half of its budget out to communities after it identified food system gaps and barriers due to COVID-19, she said. SBCFAN gave about $150,000 in grants to projects or organizations that “typically wouldn’t be able to access” philanthropic funding but had innovation and uniqueness to their proposals.

The first round of grants helped support the launch of a mobile farmers market in Lompoc and a Southern California farmer resource support network called the Plowshare Alliance. This year, Clevr Blends—a Santa Barbara County-based coffee-alternative adaptogen company—approached SBCFAN saying the company wanted to donate a percentage of its sales to food justice and “they wanted to give where they live,” Miracle said.

“This is specifically to design upfront, wraparound information, resources, tools to execute a project,” she said. “Let’s say you want to start a food business, but you don’t know how to work through environmental health services. We can work with you to help navigate that process.”

EVs are practical

Using an electric vehicle will make driving cheaper for everyone

Iseriously doubt that Ron Fink has ever had an honest discussion with an electric vehicle (EV) owner (“Who will pay?” April 25). I am an EV owner and would like to respond to his claims with facts.

Ron claims that EVs catch fire spontaneously or after a crash, that the electric grid will be overloaded by EV chargers, and the public will pay for those EV chargers. He says that EVs are not selling because travelers don’t want to scramble to find chargers and wait “two to six hours” while they recharge. Finally, he claims that the move to EVs will harm the economy of our nation!

Top Gear and Motor Trend both state that EVs catch fire less than 1/50 as often as gasoline-powered (ICE—internal combustion engine) cars. Another data point is that insurance companies do not charge more for fire insurance if there is an EV in the garage. While EV fires are harder to put out, they happen so infrequently that EVs are actually safer than ICE cars. In a crash, EVs have fuses that disconnect power. Virtually all sources report that of all car engine types, hybrids are the ones most likely to catch fire.

Ron claims that EVs will overload the electric grid. The slow adoption of EVs gives utility companies time to plan. They know exactly who is using power and when. It has always been their job (not ours) to provide the power we need. A lot of people charge their EVs in their garage using automatically timed chargers that can be set to charge at off-peak times. If a person commutes 40 miles a day to work, charging their car at home will take 10 kilowatt hours and cost them about $3 per day, (rate plan dependent)—and is even cheaper if they have solar panels. And they never have to stop at a gas station. Their car is “full” every morning.

He claims that chargers are hard to find. I live in Arroyo

Grande. There are 94 chargers at six locations within 15 miles of my house. Chargers are conveniently located along most freeways, and my car locates them automatically on the navigation screen. I have never had to wait to get a charge, and I would have no qualms about driving my EV to Florida, New York, or Iowa.

It does not take “two to six hours” to charge an EV! After driving for three hours, I can charge mine on the road in about 20 minutes— about the time it takes to stretch my legs, take a short walk to a Starbucks, and go to the bathroom.

The public doesn’t have to pay for chargers. They are privately owned, just like gas stations. The display in an EV tells its owner exactly how much energy it receives at charging stations, providing a double-check on what drivers are paying for.

EVs have virtually no maintenance. My Tesla 3 weighs 20 pounds less than my BMW 335, which will be replaced by another EV soon.

The 2035 California mandate for electric vehicles does not mean that owners will be forced to get rid of their ICE vehicles. Only new cars and light trucks are affected. Large trucks are not included, and you will still be able to buy ICE vehicles in other states and bring them into California.

But many may not want to buy an ICE. EV prices are becoming comparable to ICE cars, even without rebates or incentives, and they are almost certain to become cheaper. The cost to drive an EV is currently around half as much as an ICE car. Technology is improving over time, and charging times are reducing while range is increasing.

EVs are starting to offer “reverse charging” where the EV battery will power your house during outages. Most utilities will even buy—at premium rates—excess vehicle battery power in order to support the grid during peak usage times. And EVs help the environment. There is a

strong market in used EV batteries, and they can be recycled. Considering production, use, and disposal, EVs generate much less pollution during their lifetimes than ICE vehicles.

I believe the biggest hindrance to more EV sales is misinformation spread by uninformed individuals and petroleum companies, consortiums of gas station owners and car mechanics. EVs are practical, comfortable, powerful, easier to maintain, and not that expensive to buy. They are certainly less expensive to operate.

Rather than hurt the economy, EVs can make driving cheaper for everyone, and they can help save the environment at the same time. m

should save this one little piece of Orcutt’s past

In 1969, my class from Santa Barbara Christian School walked the beach after the Santa Barbara oil spill. I was 6 or 7. I remember seeing all the tar and the large oil-stained dead fish and tried to pry an eye out of one of them because I thought it would be cool to have. That was the start of the modern environmental movement.

Seventeen years ago, two teen girls saw a 21acre Orcutt open space that needed protection and gathered 1,300 signatures to stop a mixeduse development. With letters of support from the Sierra Club, county Supervisor Das Williams, the Environmental Defense Center, etc., the Tree Amigos, as they were called, was born. The girls saved an open space that thousands upon thousands of commuters have enjoyed on their way to work every day to Lompoc and Vandenberg. This open space sits on the corner of Clark Avenue and Orcutt Road, 7 miles south of Santa Maria.

The Tree Amigos proved that North County teenagers are not powerless, do have a voice, and can work with government to protect environmentally sensitive areas.

The Tree Amigos was able to get Fish and Game to put a pause on the development, resulting in almost two decades of visual relief for weary, hardworking commuters. With stunning views, abundant wildlife, and incredible scenery, Key Site 11 is a peek into the past of what Orcutt used to look like. That undeveloped, Western, oil “boom town.”

Because Santa Barbara County Supervisors passed an affordable housing plan based on 100 percent build-out of all open spaces in Orcutt, Key Site 11 is slated by developers to become 150-plus apartments and ball fields (“Housing headway,” May 9). No longer a wildlife corridor, but a gleaming mixed-use development full of old-fashioned themed retail and grocery stores, ironically with the theme of “boom town.” Birds of prey will soon be replaced by the cheers of parents in baseball stands. Coyotes will be replaced with gas-powered mowers, delivery trucks, and shopping carts. I guess you can’t blame the owners of the car wash next door for building this project. Everybody’s entitled to get the biggest return on investment, aren’t they? But, wouldn’t it be nice, for once, if we all stepped back and told developers and the county of Santa Barbara: You got 99 percent of what you wanted in Orcutt open space. Why don’t you just save us one little piece of the past?

Can we odor abate outdoor anything? Like sewage plants with open-air treatment ponds, for instance—Nipomo, I’m talking to you. Who doesn’t love the smell of poo on the fresh morning air?

We arguably should be doing something about that smell—but can we really?

“In the north, we have many complaints of odors particularly with ... things like broccoli and cauliflower, even people objecting to what I think is the great smell of cilantro being harvested, so odor again is subjective,”

Santa Barbara County 4th District Planning Commissioner Roy Reed said during a May 8 meeting where a Buellton cannabis cultivation project was discussed.

The outdoor cultivation project in which 3rd District Planning Commissioner John Parke seems to believe that perhaps it’s possible to control that skunky, fruity, flowery, weedy scent that can waft into the air.

“There are scents that come from the growth of it,” he said.

Humans have a very hard time controlling the natural breeze, air flow in the great outdoors— according to a company that touts its outdoor odor control product for cannabis. Cannabusters offers advice to small-scale, backyard growers— plant something else that’s pleasantly smelly like lavender, jasmine, mint, or basil.

But for larger operations, “a massive plot of rosemary isn’t the solution to all of your problems.” Cannabusters claims that its product can use “oxidation” to stop the scent of cannabis right in its tracks.

It’s hard to believe that vaporizing the scent away is even an option. But maybe that’s the solution to Parke’s pressing problem with cannabis. Maybe we could require anything smelly to use this vaporizer. Watch out broccoli, odor eaters are coming for you! Or, perhaps, we’re just holding cannabis to a higher standard than we hold any other agricultural product to in Santa Barbara County, just ’cuz it can get you high!

Parke’s problems didn’t end with odor, though. He continued on about the potential runoff from hoop houses, which is a pretty standard agricultural tool in the county.

“I’m going to want a better answer to the question, to tell you the truth, than, ‘It should be absorbed by the surrounding soil,’” Parke said.

As Reed, who seemed to be the voice of reason during the discussion, put it: “In the Santa Maria Valley we have thousands of acres of hoop houses, but yet during the rainy season, we have not yet been washed into the sea.”

“I wonder if these hoop houses were used for caneberries, blueberries, if the objections would be similarly great with respect to drainage,” Reasonable Roy said.

I wonder too, Roy.

But the odor lingers, just like it does in cannabis greenhouses outfitted with dry vapor-producing technology designed to neutralize airborne odors.

According to one Carpenteria grower who spoke to Environmental Health Perspectives Publishing, the technology worked, kind of. The smell? It was less, “but it still existed.”

Odor-eating is still an evolving field, and expecting an outdoor grow operation to be scent-neutral as a caveat to issuing a permit is bonkers. But I’m not in charge, and I don’t make the rules—which seem to change if you’re cannabis, amirite? ∆

Lompoc Pops Orchestra presents The Pops on Broadway

Tickets are currently available in advance for the Lompoc Pops Orchestra’s next concert program, The Pops on Broadway, scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 23, at 4 p.m., at Lompoc’s First United Methodist Church.

The orchestra will play various show tunes from popular musicals during the performance. The show is part of the ensemble’s 26th season, curated by Artistic Director and Conductor Brian Asher Alhadeff, who’s been conducting concerts for the Lompoc Pops Orchestra since 2015.

Near the 26th season’s start during the summer of 2023, Alhadeff told the Sun he aims to cover “a little bit of everything” when organizing musical selections for shows. Past concerts in the 26th season ranged in showcasing classic rock tunes, holiday music, and traditional patriotic songs.

General admission to The Pops on Broadway is $25 for adults and $5 for full-time students with student ID and active military. Entry is free for children ages 12 and under.

Never been to Live Oak Music Fest? Maybe this should be your year. Even if you’ve missed the first 34 years, joining the Live Oak family is as easy as slipping on your favorite pair of jeans.

“Live Oak has something special about it that’s all about community,” KCBX Director of Programming and Content Marisa Waddell explained. “When you go, you just feel like you’re part of a community right away. We have something called ‘the Live Oak way,’ which is all about treating one another with kindness.

“You feel that embodied in the people who are attending, the staff, the volunteers—they’re all about the Live Oak way.”

The long-running fundraiser for National Public Radio affiliate KCBX 90.1FM began in 1989 at Biddle Park near Arroyo Grande, moved for decades to Camp San Marcos near Lake Cachuma (it was there so long they changed the San Marcos name to Camp Live Oak), and in 2019 returned to SLO County and its new home at El Chorro Regional Park across from Cuesta College on Highway. 1.

For many music fans and families, it’s the gateway to summer fun, running this year from Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16. If you

don’t want to camp, you can buy a day ticket and, as Waddell encouraged, “Dip your toe in. Try it for a day and you’ll see for yourself.”

It’s advice shared by KCBX General Manager Frank Lanzone: “We had a slew of people last year who came in for the day and said, ‘We’re getting camping tickets next year.’ And camping tickets [sales] are ahead this year from what they were last year.”

What you’ll get is a family-friendly atmosphere with tons of activities for kids, teens, young adults, and music fans of all ages. Maybe you attended the festival when it was in Santa Barbara County but haven’t tried the new location. The good news is, after a rough initial year in 2019, they worked the bugs the out.

“I miss the old location,” Lanzone admitted. “My kids grew up there. I grew up there. But this location has turned into home. A lot of people, after the first festival [at El Chorro Regional Park] said, ‘This ain’t Live Oak,’ but after the next festival, people said, ‘It’s back. You can feel it this year.’ And you really could.

“I’m not sure I could tell you what happened, what the difference was, but I think we had to

The tree-dappled landscape is beautiful, and unlike the often hot and dusty Live Oak Camp, El Chorro is grassy and roomy, with lots of places to pitch your tent. Excellent food vendors make getting sustenance a breeze. A volunteer security force makes sure everyone’s safe, and it offers the sort of free-range childhood experience your kids will never forget.

In a world of niche music fests—bluegrass, country, rock, EDM, blues—another thing that makes Live Oak so unique is its expansive variety of genres. Its musical eclecticism is its strength, and the three-day lineup is a collaboration between Waddell, KCBX Music Director and DJ Neal Losey, and Todd Newman of Good Medicine Presents, who books the acts.

“Todd’s just a wonderful partner,” Waddell said. “He has great relationships with artists and agencies. We are ever grateful to Good Medicine for helping us book the festival.”

Newman works very hard at making sure the variety of performers flows seamlessly from one to another throughout each day.

“A lot of [the variety] reflects back on KCBX,” Newman explained. “Relative to other radio stations, they have very diverse programming, and that has to do with KCBX wanting to provide diversity to the community.

“We try to reflect that within Live Oak and its expansive palette,” he continued. “It’s a lot of fun

but also challenging. At the same time, I think other music festivals— maybe by design—get trapped into a very narrow bank of the river.”

Lanzone agrees: “We’ve just tried to keep it an eclectic festival.

People are expecting us to bring them really good performances from people they’ve never heard of before.”

Of course, some performers are invited back due to popular demand. KCBX always conducts a post-festival survey to make sure what they’re doing is working.

“Las Cafeteras performed last year and are performing again this year,” Waddell noted. “We had lots of people saying, ‘Oh, bring them back,’ so we’re bringing them back.”

Which performer is Waddell most excited about?

“Good lord, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway!” she gushed. “She’s one of my all-time favorite musicians, and it’s a big deal that we were able to get her. ... She’s one of the best bluegrass/Americana guitarists in the world, an excellent singer, and an expert songwriter, too. Plus, her band is made up of virtuosos on their own instruments.

“Anyone who comes on Friday night will leave smiling and be blown away by what they just saw.”

Waddell added that the festival is perfect for budding or seasoned musicians because of all the opportunities for jamming as well as workshops with the likes of Phil Salazar, Inga and Britta Swearingen, and longtime emcee Joe Craven and his talented daughter Hattie. There’s also a new late night dance party from midnight to 1 a.m. on Saturday.

“It’s so funny,” Waddell laughed. “I get excited every year and I think, ‘Oh my gosh, this is the best year ever!’ Every year I think that.”

Love is a losing game

Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, A Million Little Pieces, Nowhere Boy) directs Matt Greenhalgh’s script chronicling British R&B singer Amy Winehouse’s (Marisa Abela) music and life from adolescence to adulthood, her marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O’Connell), the creation of her bestselling second album, Back to Black, and her eventual alcoholpoisoning death at 27 years old. (122 min.)

Glen: I love Amy Winehouse’s music, so I knew the soundtrack would slay, and I knew her tragic life story, so I knew what to expect. I wasn’t sure this biopic would have anything to add to what we learned in director Asif Kapadia’s fantastic and moving 2015 documentary, Amy. Comparing the two films is probably a fool’s errand, but I would argue Back to Black glosses over a lot of the parts of Winehouse’s story that were more thoroughly explored in Amy. Taylor-Johnson’s film is much more sympathetic to Winehouse’s father, Mitch (Eddie Marsan), and Amy’s erstwhile husband, Blake. That said, Marisa Abela was fantastic as Amy, singing her music and embodying her mercurial energy, and I came out of this new film having a much better understanding of Winehouse’s music. It’s missing some pieces, but this is a terrific movie about a complicated and talented artist.

the documentary a few years ago, I wasn’t sure the world needed this biopic. Sometimes these types of films can feel like they’re being made to settle a score or alter the public’s perception of a star’s story. This film didn’t try to tiptoe around Amy’s demons, but instead it worked hard to create a picture of the whole. When someone is lost young, especially to addiction, it can unfortunately eclipse the rest of their image. While we may talk about Winehouse’s unpolished public life or how terribly sad it is that she’s a part of that unlucky 27 Club, the truth of the matter is that she was simply a young woman—one who loved her family and fought for them fiercely—a woman with dreams of being a mother and wife, someone who just wanted to make her Nan proud. It’s utterly humanizing to her story. Kudos to Abela for taking on the role and voice of this icon—she absolutely nailed it.

WALL-E appeared on-screen in 2008, and I remember it as a time where everyone was absolutely obsessed, enthralled, and in love with the little robot, his tinny voice, and the love story that unfolded on-screen. It felt like a new era for Pixar, and that nostalgia is back on the big screen for three days. WALL-E is a trash collecting little cutie who resides on the now uninhabitable Earth in the 29th century. Consumerism finally destroyed our home planet, and it is WALL-E’s solitary job to sort out all of our leftover Amazon boxes and fast fashion refuse left behind. Suddenly EVE shows up from a spacecraft and WALL-E can’t help but fall in love. When WALL-E shows her a new find, a seedling, EVE can’t process it and goes into standby mode. When she is taken away, WALL-E is sure he must save her and causes a ton of havoc trying to do so.

Glen: I was also impressed by O’Connell as Blake. The scene when they meet in a pub—and he introduces her to ’60s American girl group The Shangri-Las and their 1964 hit “Leader of the Pack,” lip-syncing the vocals to her—was pretty darn charming. Blake was troubled by demons, an addict, and absolutely wrong for Amy, yet they were drawn to each other. Look, critics have been panning this film, complaining that it’s pedestrian, toothless, and doesn’t dig deep enough into the truth. OK, sure. The film all but ignores what led to her death, ending

with a line of white text about alcohol poisoning on a black screen. But if you’re an Amy Winehouse fan, ignore it all. Go for the music and Abela’s explosive performance.

Anna: It’s all about Abela’s portrayal here. She takes on a voice that’s nothing short of intimidating to try and mimic, and she does so with depth and soul. You’re right, there are a lot of demons that are overlooked in this

Deeply charming thanks to Stewart’s masterful acting (you almost believe the invisible rabbit is there with him), this family film is a classic farce. When Veta is determined to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium, she instead is committed. Eventually the mistake is corrected and Elwood is brought in, but Harvey—described by Elwood as a benign but mischievous Puca from Celtic mythology—has a few tricks up his invisible sleeve.

Created at a time when eccentricities, special needs, and mental illness were routinely hidden from view, the film’s an insightful take on mental illness and the importance of embracing and accepting divergent personalities. You’ll be blown away by Stewart’s performance and surprised by its progressive view on mental health. (104 min.) ∆ —Glen

Let’s Crave It Crepes food

There’s a new spot in Arroyo Grande where loved ones can bond over a shared dessert one minute and sever their ties during a cutthroat round of Uno the next.

Before opening a brick-and-mortar cafe in May, mobile vendor Heather Swabb and a family member joked about setting up a Mario Kart area at Let’s Crave It Crepes for customers to enjoy. The beloved temper-raising racing game didn’t make the cut, but there’s plenty of competitive tabletops like Sorry and Jenga at the shop to pit patron against patron.

“My sister said I should put a TV up with Mario Kart on if I really wanted people to fight. … I’d be watching people fight and break up left and right,” Swabb told the Sun with a laugh. “I don’t need my store to be known for that.”

Since 2019, Swabb’s crepe business has been known

for serving at pop-up events, private parties, farmers markets, and long-term weekly stints across the Central Coast. Let’s Crave It Crepes started as a tent operation before Swabb acquired a food trailer near the end of 2020. Swabb’s father helped assemble the interior.

“In my store, I have a whole wall dedicated to my dad, in memory of him,” Swabb said. “I lost my dad two years ago to COVID … I wouldn’t have gotten to the store without him helping me with the food truck.

“It’s thanks to my dad and my mom, really,” said Swabb, whose mom was helping organize napkins and other supplies at the brick-andmortar during Swabb’s call with the Sun on May 8. “My mom’s been my No. 1 supporter.”

While Swabb’s personal favorite crepe on Let’s Crave It Crepes’ menu is the berry Bavarian—with a choice of fruit, Bavarian cream, condensed milk,

and cinnamon sugar, topped with whipped cream—“my mom’s [go-to] is The Elvis,” the local purveyor said.

Peanut butter and banana slices—key features of the iconic Elvis sandwich— find harmony in The Elvis crepe, adorned with chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, and whipped cream.

Berry Bavarian and The Elvis are among the menu options at Let’s Crave It Crepes, and customers can also opt to build their own crepes from scratch. Taking this route allows you to mix and match any of the shop’s toppings and syrups to then load upon a selection of base options.

“You can choose anything at my store to be on a crepe, bubble waffle, loaded brownie bites, or waffle cone nachos,” Swabb said.

Strawberries and Nutella are among the most popular ingredients customers go for, Swabb added. The Central Coast local sources all of the shop’s fruits (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and bananas) from the Hayashi Fruit Stand in Oceano. For large quantities of eggs and other goods, Swabb often stocks up at Costco.

SWEET TREATS: The local crepe maker behind the Let’s Crave It Crepes food truck has a new brick-and-mortar location in Arroyo Grande. The shop’s menu includes crepes, bubble waffles, boba drinks, and more.

QUENCH THOSE CRAVINGS: Let’s Crave It Crepes originated as a mobile pop-up tent for farmers markets and other events in 2019 and evolved into a food truck in 2020. This May marked the grand opening of the business’s first brick-and-mortar restaurant.

“I’ll buy like 50 to 60 packs of Nutella, and I’m like, ‘I swear it’s not for me; I don’t have an addiction, guys,’” said Swabb, who occasionally catches odd glances from others in the Costco line.

For the majority of Swabb’s time running Let’s Crave It Crepes, the food truck operation was a one-woman show. On occasion, Swabb would ask a friend to help take down orders during large events but worked solo otherwise. The opening of Swabb’s brick-and-mortar—on East Grand Avenue— marked a shift, as the crepe maker now has a full team of employees.

“All my staff are female; I’m 100 percent female-owned and operated. I wanted to create a safe space for women,” said Swabb, who had some memorable “proud mom” moments during staff members’ training.

“It’s a learning process. … I didn’t know how hard it was to make a crepe. It came so naturally to me that I didn’t realize that it’s actually difficult to make a

circle on a pan,” Swabb said, recalling episodes of trial and error that resulted in octagons, hexagons, and other shapes before some staffers perfected their crepe making.

“My heart felt good watching them succeed.” m
