Best Chinese Food North China T his year marks North China’s 40th year in business. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1982 and quickly became a staple among Santa Maria residents, including my parents, who took me and my siblings there for countless family outings over the years. I’m convinced that North China is the sole reason I loved eating broccoli as a kid. My parents always ordered the chicken (substituted for beef) and broccoli for me, which I’d consistently devour. It’s still one of my favorite dishes to order, especially as a lunch combo. Between Tuesday and Friday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., North China offers a $14.95 lunch special to pair with several of the restaurant’s entrees. Most of the combos include fried rice, a fried wonton, and an egg roll. One dinner entree that isn’t on the lunch special list is the North China Shrimp, one of my favorite spicy dishes at the restaurant, especially over white rice. The pepper and garlic sauce is out of this world.
