POLAR PARADE: Holiday parades abound, with San Luis Obispo’s being one of the biggest in SLO and northern Santa Barbara counties. The 46th annual event will be on Friday, Dec. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. in downtown SLO with more than 80 decorated floats, dancers, and marching bands. Visit sloholidays.com for more info.

Keep it alive

Fighting for traditions

The Orcutt Christmas Parade has been a part of the community for 60 years and brings the small town together every year for a holiday celebration.

“It’s so much fun. I always come home that day and my cheeks are sore from smiling,” parade Executive Director Kathryn Scott said. “We’re proud of it. For a little parade, we are able to do a lot.”

The parade is run by the Orcutt Lions Club and the Orcutt Community Foundation, an eight-member 501(c)3 nonprofit that helps raise funds for the parade, she said. Community businesses, local high school marching bands, dance groups, horseback riders, and old-fashioned cars make their way through Old Town Orcutt.

“Merchants will do fun things in the area. There’s the Community Stroll and the Christmas tree lighting ceremony the week before where we sing Christmas carols and a lot of fun stuff,” she said.

This year, the parade’s scheduled to happen on Dec. 10, but Scott said more volunteers and donations are needed if people want to have the parade again. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Orcutt Christmas Parade had to be canceled due to social-distancing regulations.

When it was ready to start up in 2021, organizers couldn’t get enough hands to help, Scott said.

“It is disheartening because people always say, ‘I’d love to do it. I’d love to come out and help,’” Scott said, adding that no one ends up helping. “It’d be sad to lose this tradition just because people don’t want to participate.”

It will cost about $5,000 to host the parade, which covers street barricades, county permits, street sweepers, awards for the best parade float, and annual fees for the parade’s website, she said. As of Nov. 9, the parade raised about $800 and only had two confirmed volunteers. Lions Club and Foundation members have posted

on their social media pages and in community Facebook groups, and reached out to participating organizations in search of more people.

Volunteers would help direct traffic, put out street barricades, help floats line up, and clean up at the end, she said.

“It’s not intensive before the parade, but on parade day we need a lot of people out there [to] help us,” Scott said. “Safety has to be our primary concern, and if we can’t do it safely, we can’t do it.”

Volunteers meet up before the parade and get

doughnuts, and Lions Club members frequently check in on the volunteers during the day to make sure they are OK and see whether they need anything, she said. Afterward, everyone goes to the Lions Club for food and drinks to celebrate finishing the parade.

Logistics coordinator Steve Strachan said he needs six people to lead and coordinate the volunteers and another 20 to 25 adults to help with traffic control. Initially, Strachan said he wasn’t worried about getting volunteers after 20 people expressed interest on social media and over the phone, but only one person showed up to a volunteer meeting.

“Everyone wants the parade, [but] here we are down to the homestretch and everyone said they’d like to help, but it’s like pulling teeth to get people to come to a meeting,” Strachan said. “I’d like to say we can wait until the last minute to cancel it, but every step further it gets, it gets harder to cancel.”

Strachan said the foundation’s already incurred about $2,000 in expenses with permits and flyers, and it still needs to move forward with purchases as if the parade is going to happen.

“I’d like to be able to hold off until Thanksgiving and see what happens. Last year, I got so much blowback for canceling it, and I know people will come forward [again].”

As the community expands with more development, Strachan said he expected more people to be involved with the community and help with the parade.

“I’m 61, and I’m one of the youngest. We need new blood. I’m not saying the others aren’t good or totally capable, but [there’s] burnout. We need people,” he said. “[Orcutt’s] grown where there’s a lot of people here. We are not set up as a committee to put on such a large event. It’s reaching a point where it needs a different type of management.”

Working at the parade’s been a rewarding experience for Strachan, and he hopes to keep the Old Town Orcutt tradition alive, he said.

“I do a lot of work and I’ll question why, but then I come to the parade and say, ‘Yeah, I get it,’” Strachan said. “Everyone enjoys it and it turns out to be a really good event.” ❍

Thanksgiving mornings start a bit differently in the Gray household.

By 8 a.m., New Times Sales Manager Katy Gray and her family are usually assembled at Pismo Beach, ready to participate in the SLO Food Bank’s annual Turkey Trot along with hundreds of other families. They’ve been doing turkey trots on and off over the course of the past decade. A typical Thanksgiving morning starts off with Gray preparing for the holiday dinner before heading over to the turkey trot with her family and dog, Sadie.

Trot on

If you’re thinking about getting a little exercise before or after tackling the beast of a Thanksgiving feast, you can find a turkey trot in your neck of the woods.

• Pismo Beach: Supports the SLO Food Bank. It’s $25 for admission and a T-shirt to participate in person or virtually on the 2-mile run/walk in either Pismo or Avila Beach, which starts at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 24. Visit slofoodbank.com/event/turkeytrot for more information.

• Atascadero: Supports the ECHO Homeless Shelter. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 24 at the Atascadero Lake Park bandstand, and participants can donate $20 if they wish to do so. Organizers of the event urge participants to wear their best turkey costume to be eligible for gift cards and gift baskets to local businesses in Atascadero.

• Santa Maria: Santa Maria Parks and Recreation’s Turkey Trot starts at 9 a.m. for participants 14 and older at the Santa Maria River Levee Trailhead, off North Preisker Lane. A 1-mile fun run for children ages 9 through 13 begins at 9:45 a.m. Register online at cityofsantamaria.org or pick up an entry form from Recreation and Parks, 615 S. McClelland St., through Nov. 18. Cost is $30.

• Solvang: Solvang Parks and Recreation is hosting a 5K run/walk that starts at 10 a.m. on Nov. 25 at Sunny Fields Park. Register early online at cityofsolvang.com/306/ turkeytrot or at the park before the run between 9 and 9:45 a.m. Entry to the race is $25, but all the proceeds will be donated to a local charity.

“You get so much more out of it than you expect, because you start your day outside with a nice walk with friends or family and a whole bunch [of the] community. It starts your day feeling grateful from the get-go before even the craziness of Thanksgiving starts,” Gray said. “So that’s kind of nice to just have a little moment of a walk and relaxation and community and friends.”

I know what you may be thinking: Whose brilliant idea was it to run a race on a Thursday morning? Blame the people of Buffalo, New York. Legend has it that the first trot was the brainchild of the YMCA there, where six runners ran a 8 kilometer race on a dirt road in 1896.

The tradition has since gained traction across the nation, spreading from coast to coast. While the prospect of running on Thanksgiving morning is still puzzling to some, Running USA reports that Thanksgiving is the most popular running day in the country.

But the turkey trot isn’t necessarily a serious run. Some participants don turkey costumes or pilgrim outfits, a tradition that started in the early 1980s when some turkey trotters dressed up as Canadian hockey players.

“When you get there, ... there’s sometimes a live turkey walking around on a leash, which is weird,” Gray chuckled. “And some people are dressed up with turkey hats.”

Many local organizations use the holiday tradition as a way to raise money for a good cause, such as providing food, clothing, shelter, and gifts to less fortunate families. The SLO Food Bank’s annual Turkey Trot puts the money raised toward providing families in need with holiday proteins, including turkeys, hams, and chickens, as well as hundreds of thousands of pounds of other nutritious foods, such as produce and shelf-stable goods. ❍
