Camplese
attended the fine art photography program at Salzburg College in Austria and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. She worked briefly as a freelance production assistant in New York City for Richard Avedon, Duane Michals, and others, then as a full-time studio manager and producer for David Bishop, a commercial photographer specializing in high-end food imagery for editorial and advertising. Since 1993, her “day-job” as co-owner and creative director for Scarecrow Inc., a product development and manufacturing company based in Grover Beach, has had her designing products, photography, packaging, and images for the world’s most popular brand of costume vampire fangs and other products for Halloween and other industries. Creating vampires by day supports her true love of making trouble in the San Luis Obispo County poetry scene with her darkly comedic poetry by night.
Adam Paine is an award-winning photographer and owner of Pro Photo in San Luis Obispo. He earned his bachelor of fine arts degree in photographic imaging from The Art Institute of Washington, DC. His work has been published in Shutterbug Magazine, The Fauquir Times Democrat, The Washington Post, The Gainsville Times, The Tribune, and Smithsonian Magazine. Adam currently works as a photogrammetrist, compiling 3D aerial imagery for Central Coast Aerial Mapping in San Luis Obispo. Adam also offers basics DSLR photography workshops in SLO. For more information, visit prophotoslo.com. San Luis Obispo native Peggy Mesler is a photographer and owner of The Photo Shop in SLO. e received almost 400 entries for the 19th annual Winning Images contest this year, and the competition was fierce. The genres that received the most entries were Land and Seascapes, Travel, and Animals. As in past years, the entry fee of $5 per image was used entirely for a $2,000 prize pool for all the winners, which makes this contest unique among photo contests nationwide. Our cover shot is A Tasty Snack, Lazuli Bunting by Donald Quintana. Serving as judges this year were The Photo Shop owner, Peggy Mesler; local photo professional Adam Paine; and local poet and entrepreneur Linda Camplese. As an employee of the company, I don’t serve as a judge, but I do coordinate the setup, assist the judges in the case of a tie vote, and tally the results. I laid out all of the images from each category and gave the judges Post-It notes to tag five or six images each for consideration in a final judging. When the 15 or 18 images were selected, all of the other images were taken away to allow each judge to put a score of 1 to 3 on their favorites. The scores on the notes weren’t visible to the other judges, and the names of the photographs

After all of the categories were judged, the first-place images from each category went head to head, and after close to an hour of debate by the judges, the best of show was selected. Everyone involved in the process picked one favorite picture out of the whole batch that didn’t win anything in any other category, and although I wasn’t a judge, we’re calling all four favorite pictures “Judge’s Picks.” Enjoy the show! m
