INTRODUCTION It is my profound pleasure to have written this dictionary and I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity by Yorkdale Adult Learning Center staff to accomplish this task. Without their assistance and encouragement I could not have completed a word of it. The dictionary consists of 5045 words and is particularly designed to assist the Somali student learning English as a second language. The definitions of certain words are referred from general usage as they do not have a specific meaning in Somali. This dictionary is easily understandable and will be an important learning document especially for the beginners. I wish to thank the school management and staff particularly Joyce Craig, Kathy Curran, Stephen Campbell, Penny Barr and Beverly Wood of the Library Resource Services for their assistance and patience with my work. I would also like to thank my friend Mr. Abdirahman Warsame Elmi "Carne" for his counselling on the somali language and constant encouragement to go ahead with the dictionary. Above all I thank my wife and children, who are very distant from me right now, for their patience. Finally, I wish to thank all those Somali friends who, from time to time, gave me much help and useful advice, especially Mr. Saeed Yusuf Diriye and Mrs. Firdosa Guled Warfa who made the final corrections of the Dictionary. Thank you,
