As you settle into life as a new student, it won’t be long before you’re thinking about your second year at University, and with that comes a wide range of options for student accommodation. University accommodation is available to students in all years of study, meaning that anyone wishing to return to Northumbria’s accommodation after their first year will be most welcome. Current students who book their accommodation early will be able to take advantage of the best offers and availability on all University residences. The accommodation returning/continuing offer is usually promoted in October and November, and is a great opportunity for groups of friends to reserve rooms in their preferred residence for their second or third year of study. However, we do recognise that some continuing students will choose to live in privately rented accommodation for at least one year, and Newcastle certainly has lots to choose from, with a surplus of rooms available throughout the city.
ACCOMMODATION
University accommodation returning/continuing students and private renting For those looking to live in private accommodation, there’s no shortage of options, and private landlords will promote their housing to students at every opportunity. In addition to this, the Accommodation Office distributes two independent student housing magazines to all resident students. Packed full of properties to rent and top tips on what to look for, we also complement the magazines with our flat finding guide on the Private Accommodation section of our website www.northumbria.ac.uk/accommodation. With so much on offer, the Accommodation Office is always on hand to help guide you to find your perfect home. Anyone who needs further housing advice is welcome to attend a drop in session at Northumbria’s Accommodation Office between 3-4pm, Monday to Friday (term time only) Tip: We strongly recommend that you do not make a long term commitment to a privately rented property by simply viewing it on the internet. Only sign up to a contract after arrival and once you have inspected the property in person.

8 Applications
7 Sharing with friends
Accept your course offer to study at Northumbria University and make us your FIRM choice. We also accept applications from INSURANCE applicants but will process all FIRM applications first.
You do not have to pay anything until you are sent a room offer and sign up to a contract. Applications for eligible students are processed in date order of receipt so you are more likely to get one of your top choices if you apply early. Offers of accommodation are made from June with most offers being sent in August (after A-level results).
9 Acknowledgement
We will acknowledge all applications by email within 72 hours. If you do not receive an acknowledgment in this time, please contact the Accommodation Office.
You will receive your MyNorthumbria username and password by email to your personal email address. You need these to apply for accommodation on our website at www.northumbria.ac.uk/accapp
Both you and your friend(s) need to make the same accommodation choices. You should apply individually on the same day and identify each other in ‘share preferences’ by typing in their 8-digit University Student ID. We do not guarantee to meet your preference requests as students become eligible for an accommodation offer at different times, but applying individually at the same time increases the likelihood.
10 Offers
All offers are made by email. The email address that you give the University will be the address used to communicate an accommodation offer during the summer, so please ensure that this will still be valid in August and that you check it regularly. (N.B. we recommend that you do not use a school email address).
Personal data in your application will only be used in compliance with the Date Protection Act 1998. If you are allocated accommodation in privately owned residences, essential information will be shared with the company concerned.
26
On our website you can find full information about available accommodation. Please take a few minutes to browse these pages and consult the price guide (page 24). www.northumbria.ac.uk/accommodation
6 Your preferences
University flats are mostly allocated to mixed sex groups; if you have a requirement for single gender accommodation please indicate this on your application form. You can also indicate quiet and mixed culture preferences. Please select a minimum of four different residences.
11Accepting
You have 7 days to accept the offer of accommodation. Please carefully read your personal offer letter as instructions differ by residence. As a standard you will be required to pay a non-refundable ÂŁ250 advance rent or security deposit and sign a legally binding tenancy agreement. The advance rent will be deducted from your final rent instalment.
4 Applying
HOW TO APPLY
3 Before you apply
Applications for accommodation can be made from January 2015 onwards. You should apply for accommodation as soon as you accept a FIRM or INSURANCE course offer from Northumbria University.
5 Applying online
Please follow the instructions carefully and only apply once, selecting the Application Period relevant to you. For most new students joining in September 2015 this will be 2015-16 New Students.
12 Complete your offer
Eligible applicants are made one offer. You can make arrangements to view the residence offered within the 7 day expiry period. If you apply but subsequently find your own accommodation and therefore wish to withdraw your application, please advise us as soon as possible. Once an offer of accommodation has been accepted, a legally binding agreement applies for the full length of the tenancy.
