Dusty’s Adventureland has officially opened at Australia’s premier family holiday spot, Paradise Resort. The brand new attraction was inspired by the resort’s popular mascot, Dusty, and has an out of Africa theme. In fact, you can be forgiven for thinking you have arrived in the land of Madagascar when you first come face-to-face with a giraffe and spy the multi-level climbing frame complete with slides and mazes.

“We’ve based the new attraction around our beloved ‘Dusty’ who hails from the Outback and loves outdoor fun,” explains Resort General Manager, David Brook.
Kids will feel as though they have been transported into a magical land with the new additions, which feature a nine metre rock-climbing wall, adventure playground, a new barbecue area and an indoor jungle gym located in the resort’s lobby. “We really want to encourage that sense of holiday wonder and adventure as soon as families pull up to the resort and Dusty’s indoor Jungle Gym is the perfect addition to enhance this atmosphere,” says David. The play area is suitable for kids aged between 2 - 12 years, for guests of Paradise Resort.

4 | LIGHT RAIL UPDATE
5 | GET ON BOARD FIRE4HIRE
The Wax Museum in Surfers Paradise is Australia’s largest museum of its kind and has recently become home to ‘Kate and Wills’! The new wax royalty, Prince William and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge, are featured in their now iconic ‘engagement announcement’ outfits, with Kate in her famous blue dress and the beautiful sapphire and diamond ring. Get up close to the pair and appreciate the intricate detail of these magnificent sculptures that cost over $60,000 and took 18 months to create. Already proving to be a popular feature, the wax works are one of the most frequently requested figures by guests of the museum. You can check out more amazing wax works in two sections of the museum: ‘World in Wax’ featuring legendary figures from the past and present, and the grim ‘Chamber of Horrors’ for those with a fascination in all things macabre!
The G-Link is on track to begin taking passengers from mid-2014, after testing commenced recently throughout the Surfers Paradise precinct. In November, three more trams arrived on the Gold Coast, marking 30% of the fleet available for testing the light rail system.
Every child loves a fire truck, and now they can experience a real life fire truck ride with Fire4Hire, new to Surfers Paradise! The concept started in Brisbane after founder Richie Cunningham purchased a 1974 Fire Engine for a friend’s wedding. Now with several trucks, Fire4Hire gives you the opportunity to take tours around the Gold Coast in a very different mode of transport. And the rides are not just for kids; the fire trucks are available for hen's and buck's nights, school formals and special events.
The 13-kilometre light rail corridor will be connecting passengers from the Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University (Health and Knowledge precinct) to the fast growing commercial, retail and recreational centres of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. The Gold Coast's $1 billion light rail system will have its own dedicated road space. The blue and yellow Bombardier trams will be able to carry 309 passengers – 229 of whom would be standing. The vehicles can reach a top speed of 70 km/h, however GoldlinQ says their average speed will be 23 km/h. With the G-Link almost ready, it is important for locals to watch the safety video and refresh yourself with the road safety rules. You can view the video at www.goldlinq.com.au
Tours depart from the Gold Coast daily, from Surfers Paradise to the Spit via Narrowneck, Main Beach and Sea World. Passengers can expect a lesson on how to operate a fully functional fire hose and spray the water, as well as plenty of hilarious photo opportunities and commentary on Gold Coast history and landmarks. Visit fire4hire. com.au for more details on how to book.

COVER STORY
Precinct Magazine recently took a few minutes to chat with Jon about his plans for 2014 and what to expect from his gig at Launch It. PM: Although you were actually born and raised in New Zealand, Australia has claimed you as one of their own. How do you feel about being considered an Aussie icon? JS: We are all immigrants. I consider myself to be 'Mozzie' - Maori Aussie. PM: Growing up in New Zealand, did you ever have an inkling of the fame you were destined for? JS: I come from a very musical household and growing up in that environment, I loved music. Doing something you love is a blessing and I don't do it to be famous, I just love writing songs, playing music and performing live. PM: You spent most of 2013 working with your new band, The Dead Daisies, recording and touring. How was it? JS: It was very exciting to be making new music and touring the world with such exceptional musicians. PM: You even collaborated with Slash on your single Lock ‘N’ Load – how did that come about? JS: Slash and I are old friends and we wrote Lock 'N' Load together amongst a bunch of other songs. It was great to have Slash weave his magic on our song. PM: You had a little run in with a crocodile last year, which resulted in some nasty injuries! You managed to tough it out and still completed your tour with The Dead Daisies though – that’s commitment! How did you manage that? JS: Well you know, there was nothing wrong with my voice, so the show must go on. PM: So what’s in the pipeline for 2014?
PM: You’ve been in the industry for a long time. How do you think it’s changed since you started out? JS: Technology has completely changed the way music is being heard, and the whole musical landscape. PM: What are your views on the way social media has influenced the music industry? JS: Everyone is connected. You can communicate directly with your fans – which is just awesome. PM: What can your Gold Coast fans expect from your gig at Launch It at Surfers Paradise Festival? Will you be performing any old favourites? JS: Absolutely performing old and new favourites. There will be something for everybody. PM: Launch It is a pretty unique concept, it’s like a mini music festival on the beach. What other unique settings have you performed in before? JS: It doesn't get much better than performing on the beach, let’s hope it's a hot day. It is my favourite place to be. Anywhere near the water is my favourite place to be. PM: Your career takes you all over the world, so you’ve seen some pretty spectacular places. How do you think Surfers Paradise compares to them? JS: Australia and New Zealand are such unique countries and we are extremely lucky to live in this part of the world. Having travelled all around the world there is no better place than home.
JS: We are at the start of our Australian tour and that runs through until March. Then onto finishing the Noiseworks album and also heading back overseas in April with The Dead Daisies with plans to release new material this year.
FAST FIVE 1. What’s your favourite food? Sashimi. 2. What three things must you have with you when you’re on the road? My guitar, my phone/ computer and my voice if I'm on the road. 3. Beach or snow? Beach. 4. Who’s your favourite celebrity (living or dead)? Muhammad Ali – for all he stood for. 5. What’s at the top of your bucket list? To keep breathing, so I can meet my grandchildren's grandchildren!

SURFERS PARADISE FESTIVAL
T
he festival kicks off on Wednesday April 2 with the Surfers Paradise Festival Street Parade - a vibrant spectacle featuring marching bands and multicultural performers, winding through the streets of Surfers Paradise. Paying homage to the Gold Coast’s ethnic diversity and evoking a strong sense of community, the street parade will bring local businesses, schools and community groups together. The parade will commence at 6.30pm at Neal Shannon Park, so book a table for dinner at your favourite alfresco restaurant on The Esplanade or Cavill Mall for the best seat in the house. A spectacular fireworks display on Surfers Paradise Beach will cap off the parade, signalling the official launch of Surfers Paradise Festival 2014.
Back for its fifth year in 2014, Surfers Paradise Festival is set to transform the precinct into a creative hub, celebrating all things food, art, music and entertainment. Running over four weekends, the family-friendly extravaganza will showcase local talent alongside some of Australia’s biggest names.
On Friday April 4, Saturday April 5 and Sunday April 6, Surfers Paradise Beach will really put on a show, with the Launch It concert series. A stage erected on the sandy shores against the stunning ocean backdrop will surely make this one of the most unique music festivals you will ever attend. Boasting names such as The Angels with Dave Gleeson, Jon Stevens and Daryl Braithwaite, the festival will also showcase a few more contemporary names on the Aussie music scene. For a full roundup of the Launch It festival, read our story on page 16. New to the calendar this year is Surf, Seafood & Symphony on Saturday April 12. Cavill Mall and The Surfers Paradise Foreshore will host a plethora of food marquees showcasing the region’s finest fare with a focus on fresh seafood and international flavours. A day of exceptional entertainment throughout the precinct will culminate on Saturday evening in a first for Surfers Paradise, with a symphony orchestra performing on the beach, featuring some very special guest stars of Australia’s stage and screen. Read our story on page 48 for more details on Surf, Seafood & Symphony. From Friday April 18 until Monday April 21, the Australian Street Entertainment Championships will entertain, amuse and delight spectators of all ages with this year’s carnival theme. Clowns, mimes, jugglers and dancers will take to stages across Surfers Paradise in a carnival of light and laughter, as they vie for your attention. Based around four stages, each zone will buzz with colour and activity as competing street entertainers act the clown or weave their magic to beguile. Knowing their audience might wander off at any moment, these artisans of the showbiz coalface put it all on the line to dazzle, intrigue and amaze. Visit all four zones and join in the fun to vote for your favourite as they battle it out for the title

of Australia’s Street Entertainment Champion. This year it’s a two-tiered event featuring invited professional street performers operating above a second tier of amateurs who will compete for cash prizes. The Australian Street Entertainment Championships is always a favourite of the Surfers Paradise Festival, and this year promises a lucky dip of laughter and intrigue, and a channel for magical exchange between audience and performer. After the sun goes down on Friday April 25, Surfers Paradise Beach will become a battleground of sorts, as three teams of Queensland pyrotechnics professionals go
head-to-head in the Seafire Fireworks Challenge. Lighting up the sky with their cutting edge fireworks displays set to a thumping musical beat, this is sure to be one of the best pyrotechnics shows you will ever witness. The show starts at 7.00pm but we recommend getting in early to secure the best vantage point. Saturday April 26 will close Surfers Paradise Festival’s schedule of events in spectacular fashion, with the One Way Street Party and SIPfest. The One Way Street Party celebrates the Gold Coast’s ‘new culture’ scene with a day-to-night laneway-style street festival. Showcasing contemporary art and some of the Gold Coast’s most interesting new bands, One Way Street Party is Surfers Paradise Festival’s tribute to the alternative, the new, the undiscovered gem and the cutting edge. This year’s theme is Paradiso and will combine music, live visual art demonstrations, interactive workshops, creative market stalls, art installations, fashion and a range of cultural experiences to excite all five senses. The Shorts in Paradise Film Festival (SIPfest) brings premium short film exhibition to the Surfers Paradise Festival. SIPfest is an integral part of the adjacent One Way Street Party in Appel Street, with the two events synergising to create a day and night ‘new culture’ celebration that will engage and stimulate the Gold Coast’s arts and cultural community. For more information on the One Way Street Party and SIPfest, read our story on page 32.

This is the band's second studio release with Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets) at the helm. The result is an as yet untitled album that is nothing short of legendary.

BOMBS AWAY These Gold Coast siblings have become yet another local DJ duo to hit the big time, showing that this sunny paradise really is the breeding ground for dance music prodigies. With two Platinum Records and one Gold Record to their name, they also had a number one hit on the Independent Music Charts and promise to put on quite the show at Launch It 2014.
JAHSIFIK The recent winners of ABC’s Exhumed competition serve up a super cool dance-friendly reggae sound, perfect for the Sunday session of Launch It. If you haven’t heard of these guys yet, do yourselves a favour and check them out.

SURFERS PARADISE AMBASSADOR PROFILE: SILKA KURZAK Precinct Magazine recently caught up with this year’s Face of QT Fashion Week & Awards 2014, Silka Kurzak, to find out why she loves Surfers Paradise. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Although I was actually born overseas, I’ve been here for so long now that I consider myself a true Gold Coaster. The beach is my second home – I am there at any opportunity I get (I’m a typical Aquarian, I love the water)! I also love water sports, fitness, scrap booking, eating out and trying new cultures and food. What is your favourite thing about Surfers Paradise? The sunny skies, beautiful beaches and amazing weather all year round – where else in the world can you go to the beach 365 days a year? What’s one thing about Surfers Paradise you think the rest of the world should know? That despite the outdated perception that we’re an unfashionable lot, Surfers Paradise is actually a hotspot for emerging fashion trends! Just take a look at the way the locals dress – we know what’s hot, we started the whole skinny jean trend! If you could fly any celebrity in the world, living or dead, into Surfers Paradise for a day, who would it be and where would you take them? My absolute favourite celebrity is Ross Kemp, the BAFTA award winning actor, author and journalist. His ability to connect with people and share their stories is truly amazing. His documentaries are incredibly powerful and the way he presents them in an unbiased way allows you to draw your own conclusions on the topics he covers, which I think is very important.

What does your ideal day in Surfers Paradise consist of? A morning at the beach followed by a bento box lunch at Yuuga, frozen yoghurt from Starberry and then dinner and drinks with my girlfriends at Black Coffee Lyrics. You are the Face of QT Fashion Week & Awards 2014 – tell us what this means to you. Being able to represent the Gold Coast as the Face of QT Fashion Week & Awards 2014 is a dream come true! I love fashion and I love the Gold Coast so I really am very proud to be part of showing the rest of the world what we have to offer here. You were also a finalist in last year’s Miss Universe Australia pageant – tell us about that experience. It was absolutely wonderful! Although lots of people think the concept of beauty pageants are outdated and work against the women’s movement, I actually found it works TOWARDS the women’s movement, as it is the ideal platform to demonstrate that you can have both beauty and brains. The majority of finalists are highly educated, intelligent young women with successful careers, who make a great contribution to society every day. The women’s movement is about equality for women – it doesn’t mean that we can’t celebrate our beauty – and I think the Miss Universe pageant is a great way to show that. I was fortunate to have been blessed with such an amazing experience – I made so many great friends and mentors along the way and ended up placing in the Top Ten. It was so much fun I am considering giving it another shot this year!
Surfers Paradise is one of Australia’s top family holiday destinations – why do you think it is so popular with families? There is just so much to do here, for all ages. From the beach to attractions such as Timezone, shopping and good food, you could spend a week here and still not get to do it all. What do you think is Surfers Paradise's bestkept secret? The ramen bar in Centre Arcade. It’s a very unassuming little shop that serves up the most amazing ramen on the Gold Coast! Finish this sentence: If you're visiting Surfers Paradise for the first time, don't forget your ... Swimmers and sunscreen!

ANZAC
PARADE TO BRIGHTEN HOPE FOR NEXT GENERATION It’s an unbreakable bond; a mateship forged 99 years ago on the battlefield at Gallipoli.
A
is then handed over to a member of the Boy Scouts in the hope that their generation will never have to experience and endure the sacrifices made by the diggers.
DID YOU KNOW?
“It’s the most important day on the calendar – a day that members pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by the diggers,” he says.
42,582 applications were received from Australians planning to attend the Dawn Service at Gallipoli in 2015, marking 100 years since the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops during the First World War – RSL National.
News of the landing on Gallipoli had a profound impact on Australians at home and April 25 was etched as the day Australians and their Kiwi mates remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.
The RSL is one of Australia’s oldest and most respected national organisations. The League was founded in 1916 and supports serving and exservice Defence Force members and their families.
Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left a powerful legacy.
“RSL clubs formed initially as a meeting place for returned soldiers who understood the effects the war had on each other. It has developed over the years and continues to do that while also providing a place to go to reduce social isolation and also provide major welfare initiatives,” says Mr McDonald.
pril 25 marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) during WWI.
The Australian and New Zealand forces were met with fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders when they landed in Gallipoli – an eight-month hellish slog that resulted in the death of 8,000 Australian soldiers.
The creation of what became known as the ‘ANZAC legend’ is an important part of the identity of both nations and it continues to shape the way they view both their past and future. The local community will remember our brave fallen heroes, as well as those who survived, when Surfers Paradise RSL joins the rest of the country in hosting what is probably Australia's most important national occasion. Surfers Paradise RSL President, Arch McDonald, says the Dawn March will proceed the ‘light of hope’ - a torch carried by the parade leader which
WWW.SURFERSPARADISE.COM
He says RSL volunteers visit patients in hospitals, care homes and private residences, and also provide support to assist veteran applications for financial entitlements. Situated in the heart of Surfers Paradise on the fabulous Gold Coast, the Surfers Paradise RSL overlooks the bright lights of Cavill Avenue and is just a short leisurely stroll from our worldfamous beach.
Strengthened by almost 500 ex-serving army members and around 6,000 social members, the club offers excellent facilities for dining and entertainment and is a popular and comfortable meeting place for locals and visitors. There is also a large collection of Remembrance & Anzac Day memorabilia for sale including a limited number of Poppy Coins. The Dawn March starts outside Surfers Paradise RSL at 5.15am on Anzac Day, followed by the Dawn Service at 5.30am. 7D VIRTUAL REALITY CINEMA
T
ravel through space on a rollercoaster ride in ‘Space Coaster’, take a hair-raising trip along the Great Wall of China in a tuktuk or come face-to-face with zombies on the ‘Bloody Road’. 3D movie fans on the Gold Coast now have the opportunity to enjoy these experiences and more in a whole new dimension at the 7D Virtual Reality Cinema in Cavill Ave. The experience combines virtual reality technology with high-tech rollercoaster movements and special effects such as snow and rain to make the viewer feel like they are in the scene. 7D Cinema uses every sense to bring the experience to life including strange scents that fill the air and light mists flooding the room, as well as drops and movements that recreate that rollercoaster feeling. There are ten short, eight minute films for riders to choose from with a range of genres on offer including horror, family and action. Each experience begins with cinemagoers buckled up in Ferrari-style seats on either a six or nine-seat simulator designed to produce exhilarating movements. Visitors are then asked to put on their 3D glasses and hold on tight as the fun begins. The most popular film at 7D Cinema, ‘Wall of China’, makes the rider feel as though they are being towed along the iconic destination on the back of a tuktuk, feeling every bump and twist and turn along the way. ‘Surfers Coaster’ places the rider on a high-speed

rollercoaster in tropical surroundings with green trees, blue sea and high mountains with plenty of obstacles to avoid including giant tarantulas and 100 foot drops into the raging river below. Coming soon is ‘Panic House’, which will send riders into a virtual house of horrors from which they must dodge zombies, monsters and escape terrifying labyrinths. Australia’s first 7D Cinema outlet opened on the corner of Trickett Street and Surfers Paradise Boulevard in 2012 and received more than 50,000 visitors within the first month. Managing Director Michael Kurt said the high demand for a second 7D Cinema in Cavill Ave showed that 21st century moviegoers were looking for more interaction from their cinema experiences. “We scoured the world to find the latest technology in virtual reality to allow our guests to feel as though they are part of the movie in a way that has never been done before in Australia,” said Mr Kurt. “There are family films, horror movies and action adventures, all complete with spectacular special effects and unbeatable simulator movements. This is the only simulator in the world that produces drops that recreate that lower-belly, rollercoaster feeling.”
in place to spread the 7D Cinema franchise across Australia. “We expect this will become a leisure trend throughout 2014 – we already have plans to spread 7D Cinemas across Australia with further locations set to open in Sydney and Melbourne very soon,” he said. The 7D Cinema experience features batteryoperated interactive 3D glasses along with more than seven different special effects including snow, bubbles, wind, fog, smell, leg tickle, lightning and rain to create the virtual reality sensation. Bookings are not necessary with customers encouraged to walk-in and purchase tickets to the next available session for their preferred movie. Admission prices are $15 for adults or $13 for students and children. For those looking to double their fun, 7D Cinema offers a package of two movies for $25 per person. 7D Cinemas are located at 6/34 Trickett Street and 17 Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise and are open every day from 9.30am until 10.00pm. to plummeting towards the ground on Dreamworld’s Giant Drop ride.
First up was the ‘Surfers Coaster’. Sitting down in the darkened room, I slide on my 3D glasses just as the screen lights up and the simulator begins to move. Instantly, I am on a rollercoaster ride and the adrenaline kicks in.
The rollercoaster then heads through some caves where a spider pops up, and even this is given the 7D treatment as I feel something brush up against the back of my leg, causing me to squeal like a little girl.
With my eyes on the screen, I can feel every twist and turn, as the simulator moves in unison to the movie being played in front of me. The rollercoaster shoots along the track through some clouds and we are sprayed with a light mist of water and a breeze of cool air swishes past, making me really believe that I’m on the ride of a lifetime.
The Surfers Coaster takes you on a journey through caves, mountains and across the sky. The outdoor setting showcases the 7D simulator’s ability to use all of your senses to experience the true entertainment of the eight minute long movie. Of course, there are many other twists, turns and surprises that you will need to experience yourself – I don’t want to be that girl who gives away the whole plot of the movie …
The rollercoaster slows down momentarily, before taking off again and suddenly dropping, causing my stomach to somehow end up in my throat! I can only compare this feeling

The next movie, ‘Wall of China’, happens to be the personal favourite of Marlie Van Doorn, Sales and Marketing Manager for 7D Cinemas, which
she has seen numerous times. The movie starts as if you are sitting in a ‘tuktuk’ style cart, which is then being pulled along a stone path up the Great Wall of China. After a few bumps in the road, the cart suddenly detaches, continuing its way along the Great Wall of China sans driver. Once again, the simulator does not disappoint. You can feel every bump, jolt and movement in perfect unison to what you are seeing onscreen. The graphics in this film are stunning, making it thoroughly entertaining in every sense of the word. The beautiful visuals really place you at the scene and you truly feel like you are at the Great Wall of China. Although the thrills and spills in this movie aren’t quite as fast paced as the Surfers Coaster, it is just as much fun. One of the highlights is being able to feel snow in the room, something we definitely don’t get much of here in Surfers Paradise!

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT
TIMEZONE Timezone Surfers Paradise, originally known as Grundy’s, is a Gold Coast icon. For those of you who aren’t all too familiar with the history of Surfers Paradise, Grundy’s was ‘the’ place for family-friendly entertainment back in the eighties. This game arcade/amusement park hybrid featured a range of games you could play in the hope of winning tickets, which you could then trade for prizes at the prize counter.
T
hese days it’s known as Timezone and while it still offers the same great family atmosphere, a lot has changed – for the better of course. Today’s games at Timezone are amongst the best in the world, and with toddler rides, mini-golf, bumper cars and laser tag, there’s a whole lot more here than just arcade games. The entertainment hub promises to cater for everyone from the ages of 1 to 100. To put this claim to the test, we recently sent one family down to Timezone to see if they agreed. DAD’S PICKS Typhoon Motion Simulator Unlike many traditional motion platforms that only reproduce directional movements, Typhoon delivers up to 2 G’s of acceleration and up to 400 movements per second. From the bumps and drops of a roller coaster ride to the race downhill or in a cave, this new motion technology with high-tech actuators allows the player to sense it all. Dad loved all the thrills and spills of this one, ranking it his favourite. Daytona Sega Racing Classic This classic car racing game sees the driver behind the wheel of a virtual racetrack. With the choice of three tracks as well as an automatic or manual transmission, players can either race against additional players or against the machine. Dad loved this one for the nostalgia as well as the challenge.

MUM’S PICKS Deal or No Deal Based on the popular television show, this game puts you in the player’s seat. Choose your case and then try and beat the banker at his own game to win up to 200 tickets. This is almost as good as the real deal! Mum loved this one, playing it three times in a row and ranking it her favourite. Skilltesters With dozens of skilltesters scattered around Timezone, you could win anything from ice creams to stuffed toys to electronics! Mum tried her hand at a few, walking away with a Cornetto and a Dora the Explorer toy. She already has her eye on a giant Winnie the Pooh toy from The Big One machine on her next trip back to Timezone.
And instead of getting sent to the naughty corner, you win tickets to exchange for prizes! This one definitely got the thumbs up. Timezone Surfers Paradise Centro Surfers Paradise, Level 1/Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise Ph: (07) 5539 9500 www.timezonegoldcoast.com.au
TOP TIP Opt for a package deal for the best value. The Family Package is $85 for a family of four and guarantees each person two hours of fun!
THREE-YEAR-OLD’S PICKS Shooting Hoops The basketball game ‘Fun Hoops’ was right up this pint-sized sports fanatic’s alley. Get as many balls in the hoop as you can in the time allowed to win tickets which can be exchanged for prizes. Little Miss Three enjoyed it so much we had to keep coming back to it. Whac a Croc After repeatedly hearing “don’t hit that” at home, this was Little Miss Three’s dream come true – a game where you use a soft mallet to hit snapping crocodiles on the head.

infinity and beyond Since its launch in November 2000, Infinity Attraction has become one of Surfers Paradise’s most popular attractions. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have taken part in this unique interactive experience, with Infinity receiving rave reviews for its one-of-a-kind concept from all age groups.

escribed as the ‘funhouse of the future’, Infinity is an extraordinary series of around 20 multi-sensual environments filled with unique special effects, atmospheric sound fields, ultra groovy music and illusions that appear to go all the way to infinity.
computers that control the effects in each world. The environments integrate a ‘magic mix’ of fibre optics, special translucent finishes, total internal reflection, infrared and ultraviolet lighting, tactile elements, lasers and projection effects, the latest LED technology and video projection systems and mood-setting sound technology.
The brainchild of Gold Coast based inventor and leisure & entertainment concept designer, Gregg Thompson, Infinity combines special effects technology, science and immersive art into one unforgettable journey. As Managing Director of concept development company Dreamtech Group, Gregg has attracted worldwide interest and praise for this world-class attraction.
The Infinity experience takes approximately 30 minutes, and is ideal for groups, families and even dates! Infinity is frequently used for celebrating special occasions or social club and school outings. It’s perfect for work parties, team building, a reviver for conference delegate groups or as a thrilling example of ‘thinking outside the square’ to enthuse marketing groups.
“Infinity has been a success story due to its appeal to all ages and nationalities as well as both sexes. It combines a healthy dose of showmanship with an effective use of psychology, good marketing and staff training.” Gregg explains.
We can almost guarantee that you’ll want to visit Infinity more than once. “Infinity has an extraordinarily high level of repeat visitation driven by patrons wanting to share their ‘discovery’ with their friends and family as well as the knowledge that it is continually evolving new experiences,” says Gregg.
During his university years, Gregg developed innovative light shows for live bands and after forming Dreamtech he developed an impressive diversity of special effects for fashion shows, kinetic signage and themed exhibitions for large companies and government as well as plans for high tech edu-tainment attractions. Gregg applied these imagineering skills for Brisbane’s World Expo ’88 and he has created designs and technologies for entire theme parks, each with their own unique appeal. Road Test We sent our resident road tester, Shannon Fisher, down to Infinity to find out what all the fuss is about. Walking into the Infinity shopfront we were welcoming, Ph.met (07)by5538 2988 friendly staff. Anticipation was high as we were handed our white gloves and shoe covers. These glow-in–the-dark shoe and hand gloves, we were told, help you navigate in the darkest areas. Ahead of us was a family with small children. We waited for a few minutes for them to proceed before walking into the first world, fully mirrored and different. This ‘Inter-dimensional Space’ was a fantastic start to our experience, easing us into the experience gently. Each area in Infinity leads to wonder and awe; set up like a new-age maze, you experience something new in every world. From very low light areas with amazing special effects that lead to the unknown to secret doors hidden for you to find, and even fluid-like floors for you to have fun on, each world encourages interaction. There are environments that you could stand in for hours, mesmerised by the amazing visual effects. The way Infinity has used lighting and mirrors to create illusions is pure genius! Once you have started on your Infinity journey, there is no turning back – literally. The maze through Infinity is one way only, so it’s not possible to go back the way you came from. But with each room even more thrilling than the last, you won’t want to! Infinity is great fun for the whole family and is recommended for children eight years and over.

QT FASHION WEEK & AWARDS 2014
A
sk anyone to name the first thing that comes to mind when you say ‘Gold Coast’ and the answer will probably involve surfing, sunshine or theme parks. It’s unlikely that the word ‘fashion’ would feature anywhere in this sentence, but one Gold Coast event organiser is working hard to change that. Michaela Fitzgerald, Event Coordinator for QT Fashion Week & Awards, came up with the concept for the event after working on the relaunch of Gold Coast Fashion Week. “Someone mentioned to me that QT were interested in hosting an event such as Fashion Week so a meeting was set up and here we are,” explains Michaela. “QT's image is all about fashion, style and fun, which is exactly what Fashion Week is all about. The venue is the perfect location for the event and we are really looking forward to seeing the Fashion Week grow with the QT brand.” Now in its second year, QT Fashion Week & Awards has become one of the most hotly anticipated events on the Gold Coast social schedule. Although the official calendar kicks off with the official VIP launch event on Thursday May 29, the festivities are already underway, starting with the recent Face of QT Fashion Week & Awards competition.

The model search uncovered hundreds of fresh faces, with the top ten strutting it out for the title of Face of QT Fashion Week & Awards at the finals, hosted by Stingray Lounge at the QT Gold Coast. After demonstrating two different looks in casual wear of jeans and a tank top, followed by swimwear, the field was narrowed down to three finalists. Judges Michaela Fitzgerald, local designer Jay Pask, and director of GC Mag Owen George, ultimately named gorgeous Gold Coast girl Silka Kurzak the winner. “Silka is just perfect,” gushes Michaela. “She is exactly the sort of ambassador we were wanting for our event.”
the catwalk. But it’s not just her striking natural beauty that makes her the ideal candidate for this position; her wonderful outlook on life, vivacious personality and intelligence make her a strong ambassador not only for QT Fashion Week & Awards, but also for our beautiful city. “I’m really looking forward to being able to represent the Gold Coast as the Face of QT Fashion Week & Awards,” enthuses Silka. “I think it’s important for the rest of the country, and the world, to see that not only can we keep up with trends, but we can set them.” With a passion for fashion since she was a tot, it would seem natural that Silka has ended up in the fashion industry, however, Silka never really thought this was her destiny. Holding a bachelor degree in event management from Griffith University, modelling was never really in the plan. “After losing my father in a tragic accident as a teenager, I turned to food for comfort,” she explains. “I gained a lot of weight, and at my heaviest, I didn’t even recognise the person I saw in the mirror. I had always been naturally lean and athletic, and suddenly I was this sad, lost little girl, trapped in a body that was three sizes too big for me.” In 2010, Silka decided to take charge and lost a lot of weight through a combination of balanced eating, exercise and a nutritional supplement regime. Friends and family noticed the drastic change and started urging her to try her hand at modelling. The rest, as they say, is history. Come May, Silka will be in her finest form, ready to open the show at the weeklong festival’s official launch night. Held in the penthouse at the QT Gold Coast, this will be an elite event, limited to VIP ticketholders only. If you would like to be one of the lucky few to rub shoulders with the who’s who of fashion at this soiree, you can purchase a VIP ticket at www.fashionweekandawards.com.au/tickets
Having recently placed in the top ten at the Miss Universe Australia pageant, Silka is no stranger to PRECINCT MAGAZINE / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

ARTS & CULTURE Going for a very reasonable $375, a VIP ticket will afford you an invitation to the exclusive launch and wrap parties, reserved seating at the Up and Coming Swimwear event, a front row seat at the Up and Coming Designer show, VIP seating at the QT Gala Dinner, entry into QT Fashion Day Out and the opportunity to have your hair and makeup professionally done before the event of your choice. Friday May 30 makes a splash with the Up and Coming Swimwear parade and cocktail party. This runway event under the stars will showcase the best up and coming swimwear designers Australia has to offer. A cocktail party will follow the runway show, allowing you to mingle with the designers and get a close up look at the garments. Saturday May 31 combines high tea and high fashion in the Up and Coming Designer Show & High Tea. These designers have been labelled the ones to watch, and this will be your opportunity to see the next big names in Aussie fashion showcasing their unique designs. A champagne high tea will follow the show. Later that evening, you can swap your party frock for a ball gown in honour of the QT Fashion Week Gala Dinner. Enjoy canapés and a three course dinner with drinks as you view five collections from leading Australian Designers on the runway. QT Fashion Week will come to a close on Sunday June 1, but not before you get a chance to sample some of the wares for yourself. The QT Ballroom will transform into fashion central, with blow dry bars and makeup stations around the room to make sure you’re looking your finest. Champagne will be flowing as you browse the current and past sample collections of more than 20 designers, available for purchase on the day. The festivities will end with the official VIP wrap party. Whilst the lineup of designers was still being confirmed at the time we went to print, it’s expected that this year’s QT Fashion Week & Awards will again attract some of the top names in Australian fashion. “If last year has done anything, I would say that it has showed people that we are serious about fashion,” says Michaela. “We had a number of designers come from around Australia, some up and coming and others very established, and they were pleasantly surprised with the style that exuded around the city. It was definitely not the very laid back, casual image we seem to be commonly labelled with.”

As well as providing a much needed opportunity for those interested in fashion on the Gold Coast, the event aims to boost local business through strategic business partnerships. “We are very dedicated to using local businesses to partner with to ensure we are highlighting the very best of what the Gold Coast has to offer,” enthuses Michaela. “I think it’s also a great opportunity for young people wishing to enter the industry to be able to attend something like this without feeling the need to have to travel to Sydney or Melbourne.” Tickets to official QT Fashion Week & Awards events start at just $10. MUMS
IN PARADISE
I
t’s the day of the year that mothers around Australia look forward to the most. The one day they get a break from cooking breakfast and doing laundry, and with any luck, even get a sleep in! Sunday May 11 is Mother’s Day (make sure you put that in your diary now) and if you haven’t yet made plans, then you’ll love these foolproof ideas we’ve compiled for you. After Mum has had a cup of tea in bed, it is of course Dad’s responsibility to get the kids ready while Mum enjoys a long hot shower with the added luxury of being able to wash her hair and even put a touch of makeup on! Then it’s off to Bumbles Café at Budd’s Beach for one of the Gold Coast’s best breakfasts. Located just off the Gold Coast Highway, Budds Beach overlooks Chevron Island to the west and Surfers Paradise to the east. This small neighbourhood spans just a few blocks, but is secluded from central Surfers Paradise, providing a wonderfully relaxing and tranquil atmosphere that the whole family will enjoy. Famed for its mouth-watering meals, superb coffee and quaint shabby chic interior, Bumbles is a Gold Coast institution. The menu offers everything from your choice of a wide variety of breads, toasted and topped with tomato and Persian feta or avocado, goat’s cheese, lemon and coriander, right through to indulgent dishes such as French toast with bacon, grilled banana and maple syrup. Our personal favourite is the potato rosti topped with smoked salmon, goat’s cheese, avocado and lemon herb hollandaise. Yum!
souvlaki or MOS Burger (also in the Soul Retail precinct) for unique burgers with a Japanese twist. Both of these outlets offer seating so that you can dine in if you wish. Of course, there’s also the tried and true option of fish and chips, available at a number of outlets in Surfers Paradise, perfect to share by the beach. If you’d like to treat Mum to something a little more extravagant, there are plenty of wonderful establishments in Surfers Paradise that provide the ideal mix of atmosphere and delicious dining. Located in the Peppers resort at Soul, Seaduction is perfectly positioned on the Surfers Paradise beachfront for breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean coupled with a truly opulent dining experience. The contemporary, lavish interior complements the modern menu, which is inspired by local and seasonal produce. Executive Chef Steve Szabo flawlessly combines old world culinary techniques with simplistic, delicious flavours that embody Modern Australian cuisine. For a buffet lunch the kids will enjoy just as much as Mum, but without sacrificing the luxury factor, you can’t go past Bazaar at QT Gold Coast hotel. Designed to reflect a middle-eastern marketplace, Bazaar actually reaches all four corners of the globe. Chefs at different stations, representing street stalls, hawk their fare – everything from a lavish cold seafood spread to authentic wood fired pizzas and Asian dumplings steamed to order.
vantage point of Surfers Paradise, you could try an afternoon cruise. Wyndham Cruises run a beautiful one and a half hour afternoon river cruise, allowing you to see the Gold Coast from the water. A spacious, modern vessel and complimentary tea, coffee and snack platter make this an enjoyable way to take in the local landmarks. For a view of Surfers Paradise from above, head for Q1, one of the tallest residential towers in the world. SkyPoint Observation Deck, on levels 77 and 78, offers unsurpassed 360 degree views of Surfers Paradise, the Gold Coast hinterland and beyond. There’s also a licensed café and bar providing light meals and refreshments.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll by the river (you might even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin or two) and then let the kids run free in the park for a while. When the kids have tired from the playground, or when Mum decides it’s time for the focus to shift back to her, head for Cavill Mall so Mum can browse the stores and pick up a great souvenir of her Mother’s Day.
The dishes on offer vary from day to day and according to season, but dishes we have sampled on past visits include meltin-your-mouth roast pork with the crispiest, crunchiest crackling ever; fresh local prawns, scallops and oysters; spicy buffalo chicken wings with blue cheese sauce and the most amazing grilled corn on the cob. There’s also been an outstanding cous cous salad, steamed prawn dumplings, roast ham and a variety of desserts including mini red velvet cupcakes and ice-cream ‘cold stone’ style.

ARCADE DESIRE Melbourne may ooze raw inner city charm and Sydney has been known to dish up its own culinary excursion – but check this out – Surfers Paradise has its very own style, awash in a cool character of its own.
T
he Surfers Paradise Centre Arcade in the heart of the precinct is forging its own identity, offering a unique alternative for city-goers who want to take a break from the mainstream and immerse themselves in a vibrant, eclectic cultural hive.
Showcasing covert boutiques, hole-in-the-wall cafés, gourmet restaurants and old-school beauty parlours, the creative laneway is fast becoming a vibrant hub, popular with both locals and tourists flocking for unrivalled experiences. A favourite haunt is Black Coffee Lyrics, a pocket-sized restaurant radiating charisma and charm, serving globally inspired food delivered with a passion matched by the flamboyance of its award-winning cocktails. Launched by Gold Coast lads Nicholas Whitehead, David Nicholson and Mark Schawyer in January 2010, the dimly lit hideaway is a laid-back alternative to the hustle and bustle of the glitter strip, offering patrons quality dining in relaxing surrounds. Named after a Humble Pie song famously covered by Ella Fitzgerald, Black Coffee Lyrics offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving sought after specialty coffee with chatty and affable service.

A line from Black Coffee Lyrics says, “In America, well it’s the land of the free; you can get what you want if you’ve got some do re me.” Here you don’t need a lot of ‘do re me’ – for $38 you can get a gourmet pizza (spiced salmon, capsicum, cherry tomatoes with rocket and lemon garlic yoghurt) and a delicious tempter (pumpkin pie with black olive caramel sorbet and sage cream). The rocking menu is attracting diners seeking value in a low-cost environment and is complemented by the ‘hipster’ décor that also features a small library, aged stools and wooden tables, unusually funky artwork and industrial lighting fixtures. Bar manager Adam Bastow has been shaking cocktails here since opening day and is proud of the fact that he’s a part of the furniture, doing his best to blend in with the remarkable velour high back Queen Anne type pieces. “They (the owners) spent so much time overseas experiencing all these eclectic little places and these hole-in-the-wall type situations and every time they came home they were sick of not having it, so they did it themselves,” says Adam, 25. With no hospitality experience, the trio has managed to transform a dead block into a thriving laneway, expanding twice in its first year to meet demand from an emerging hipster crowd. “We get the early risers come in for coffee and breakfast on a Saturday morning, we get the late comers that have been out the night before that come in and get Bloody Marys and breakfast at 11 in the morning. That filters into lunch and then we get everyone off the beach and in the evening it’s literally anyone and everyone, all sorts of ages and backgrounds,” he says. But the journey hasn’t always been easy and like any expressive foray illuminated by fringe culture, hurdles have been ever present. “In the beginning it was a battle to push global food styles and global wines but now people come in asking if we have a certain kind of wine or a certain kind of dish,” explains Adam.

“It’s not just the development of Black Coffee Lyrics but a development of the Gold Coast palate that has completely changed over the past couple of years.” And while locals are attracted to all it has to offer, visitors from interstate are also seeking it out.
“It’s not just the development of Black Coffee Lyrics but a development of the Gold Coast palate that has completely changed over the past couple of years.”
Steven Lim, a Bachelor of Commerce and Science student from Sydney first heard about Black Coffee Lyrics while he was enjoying a summer on the Gold Coast in January 2013. A year later, he is back and this time he brought an entourage. “It is somewhere different, the food is quality and the last time I was here with friends I thought it was really delicious, a nice charm and I thought it would be good to share it with my other friends,” says Steven. While Black Coffee Lyrics might be magnetising the masses, it is just one of many in this diverse small business mix, where owners are thinking outside the box and pitching their unique wares. Neighbour Arkive Vintage is an on-style boutique wonder, stocking styles of men’s and women’s vintage clothing, accessories and homeware spanning decades from the 1920s to the 1990s. Owned by husband and wife duo Angie and Jake Varnam, Arkive Vintage is fashioning itself as one of the forefront style destinations on the Gold Coast. Launched in 2012, the boutique offers a closet of handpicked threads from suppliers in the UK, Europe and North America. Co-owner Angie aims to bring vintage up-to-date by paying attention to quality, condition and style and carefully selecting customised pieces with clever styling. “The increase of fast, disposable fashion, where a rapid cycle of mass-produced fashion is sold at rock bottom prices has led to a trend and interest towards vintage clothing,” says Angie. “We endeavor to bring our customers the best of the bygone decades, with well crafted, quality and timeless pieces that are not only stylish, but have a shelf life too.”
After exploring many locations for their store, the Surfers Paradise Centre Arcade boasted the most potential. “We settled on Surfers Paradise, it is iconic and internationally recognised and subsequently attracts both national and international guests,” she says. “We liked the idea of being in a heritage arcade that is slightly offbeat with a rich history.” Other popular stores include the Penny Lane Ladies and Gents Barber, Stairwell Coffee, The Buzz and a handful of Asian inspired hole-in-thewall eateries including the popular Good Luck Dumpling and King of Noodles. The Surfers Paradise Centre Arcade is ultimately a place where people want to linger; it’s calm and collected, offers an alternative experience and is a must visit for those living and visiting the Gold Coast.

AT THE HELM
Casual and cool, the newly refurbished Helm Bar & Bistro is a refreshing addition to the Surfers Paradise scene. Recent winner of Queensland’s Best Hotel for Casual Dining, it’s easy to see why Helm is steering the way for bistro chic on the Gold Coast.
G
oogle Helm Surfers and you will be hard pressed to find any negative reviews on the restaurant that was formerly known as the Pink Elephant and Titanium Bar. Since its refurbishment, the bistro has become a hot spot for locals who like to enjoy a relaxed dining experience that doesn’t under deliver on the quality of food. “We have tried to create an atmosphere and name suited to the surroundings of the beautiful Nerang River right in the heart of Surfers Paradise. What we have achieved is an establishment that has outstanding quality food with a wide range of craft beers and an assortment of the best cocktails Surfers has to offer,” says Restaurant Manager, Graham Bennett. Beyond the great views, there are a few other essential factors that have made Helm a hit. “It’s a combination of things that keep Coasties coming back - the quality of food, good pricing, excellent service and a great atmosphere.” The iconic spot beside the Nerang River is the ideal setting for the contemporary nautical interior of Helm, a look that was inspired by its sister venue in Sydney. It fits right in with the laid back Gold Coast atmosphere that complements an easy-eating experience not far from the ocean. With the recent award under their belt, Helm has cemented itself as the epitome of casual dining, but as Graham points out, the term ‘casual’ can mean different things when it comes to eating out. So what embodies a good casual dining experience? “You don't have to dress up to come here. The atmosphere provides this great opportunity to dress how you feel, and still have a delicious meal. A lot of patrons come straight off the beach, and we really do welcome that. It's the vibe of a place and how comfortable you feel.” The menu is diverse and packed with hearty mains and light salads, pub favourites and a good selection of Helm’s now famous pizzas. The prawn and scallop pizza with chilli oil and buffalo mozzarella served with smoked trout salad is an example of what Helm is all about – simple, good food with flavours that work. ‘Standard’ menu items like the antipasto share plate is dressed up with ham off the bone, bacon and mushroom arancini and Tasmanian brie and lavosh – all at surprisingly reasonable prices and a perfect plate for sharing. “We love this concept that started in our Sydney restaurant, of ‘sharing is caring’ plates. I think people can really get the most out of eating out when you order a few things as a group. You get the diversity of the menu and it has this way of bringing people together,” says Graham.

Tempting bar snacks like the Thai marinated chicken drummettes with lime aoli, or the fresh whole prawns with lemon and seafood sauce are the perfect choices for those meeting and greeting on a Saturday night. Wash it all down with a collection of international beers, wines and spirits and impressive array of signature cocktails. Served in jam jars, these cocktail inventions show off the impressive skills - and creativity - of the bar staff. The ‘Pretty Pretty Bang Bang’ cocktail is a popular choice, with muddled fresh strawberries, Kettle One vodka, Chambord liquor, grenadine and Red Bull. As the menu states, this drink will give you wings, but not the angel kind. And for the best time of the week, Helm caters to all tastes and ages with specials on offer every day, but Sunday sessions rate highly with the crowds. Think a bucket of Coronas riverside on a hot day, with a seafood share plate and live music. “Sunday sessions are fantastic. We have the best solo artists on the Gold Coast playing here. Not to mention the sunsets. If you are beach side the sunset can get blocked by the buildings, but if you experience the sunset from Helm, you will enjoy every lasting ray over the Nerang River.” The music is a big part of the bistro, and you can enjoy live entertainment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights until late. If you were considering a birthday, engagement or party venue, the unparalleled views and central location makes it perfect for functions and events, with the spacious bistro and bar areas accommodating for up to 600 guests cocktail style, or for a more intimate event, 150 guests for dining. “Helm’s menu appeals to all tastes and can be tailored to fit your needs. We also have a great range of beverage packages available that are accessible at any price point. More importantly, our service is impeccable, which is what you want at any important occasion,” Graham says. For good food at reasonable prices with a river view, look no further than Helm Bar & Bistro in Surfers Paradise. And remember to sit back, and enjoy the sunset.
