Iris Palladium
This magazine has been a long time in the making—nearly two years, to be exact. Everything was going smoothly, but then life, as it sometimes does, threw me a curveball. My mother, my anchor in this world, was diagnosed with cancer and later passed away. It was a profound loss that shook me to my core and undoubtedly the hardest thing I've ever faced, both during the anticipation of grief and in the aftermath. I lost all my passion, and simply getting through the days took all my strength.
Creating NUDE Magazine without passion is impossible, so I decided to step back and focus on myself and my family. During this time, I bought a house and threw myself into renovating it. Engaging in something physical and seeing tangible progress helped me tremendously. It's been just over a year since my mom passed, and although not an hour goes by that I don't think of her, I can feel my passion returning. I'm ready to create again.
This time around, there will be an even greater focus on design, interior, and art. We're starting strong with the fantastic Malene Hvidt on the cover and many pages of what I hope will be inspiring content.
I hope our loyal readers are still out there, and I welcome new ones to join us on this journey.

ANY STYLING TIPS FOR THIS FALL/WINTER SEASON?
So my top tips for the fall-winter season are all about layering: the shirtings, the lightweight cashmere, the shirts under the beautiful kind of dry sweat hoodies. Even the coats, which are pretty lightweight, can be layered. And for me, that gives the richness and the beauty of autumn-winter dressing. It‘s all about those cosy layers that give you that beautiful silhouette.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?
ARE YOU A DESIGNER WITH AN ARTIST APPROACH OR AN ARTIST WITH A DESIGN APPROACH?
I work fluently in the fields of design, architecture, and art, not having to define if I am one or the other. The beauty lies in the coexistence of how you work with Gesamtkunstwerk (translated from German as an artwork produced by a synthesis of various art forms—an all-embracing art form). Design, for me, is something between an artistic concept, a philosophy of life and a personal touch. I also have a big belief in making a space or an object's imperfections stand out by celebrating its history and acknowledging beauty in a kind of humble simplicity.
Working in different fields of design has also been related to my family's heritage of furniture design. Together with &Tradition, I have been part of relaunching a furniture collection designed by my
grandfather and his firm, Hvidt & Mølgaard. In addition to this, and together with my sister Barbara Hvidt, I have an art project, Les Mains des Soeurs, working with a series of chapters in a larger narrative, focusing on craftsmanship and exploring the intimate relations that exist between the hand and the object as well as our sisterhood, where the first chapter presents an intimate collection of jewellery that explores the tactile potential amidst the softness of amber and the The firmness of silver is elevated in ceramic boxes.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
My grandfather and his humble yet uncompromising approach to design and craftsmanship, with no detail left unattended, have always been a big source of inspiration to me. With my father, his three brothers, and the Mølgaard family, we are now working with &Tradition of relaunching selected pieces of furniture by Hvidt&Mølgaard. Working with my family heritage,
looking back at these everlasting designs and values around quality and craftsmanship is something I greatly value. It inspires me in my work and approach to design.
WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND SPACON & X?
In defining the foundation of Spacon & X, we embarked on a journey to redefine spatial optimisation. Our projects were centered around the work and home environment living in the city, but we didn't stop there. We started receiving projects from offices, retail spaces, hospitality and larger residential projects, pushing the boundaries of what a design studio could achieve. Through our work on a wide range of scales, from products to interior design and more significant architectural buildings, we sought to create a synthesis between typically separated fields that contribute to a more complete experience of the space. We believed, and still do, that the key to the fusion of these different scales and design abilities is to always work with a personalised and holistic design approach and have a close relationship with clients, suppliers, and other collaborators. Our design criteria are not just about creating a space but about addressing the most essential activities of the space. We combine functionality, storytelling, and aesthetics through simple, honest, and explicit materials and solutions. The Spacon & X work is defined by an ongoing quest to find perfection in the imperfect, a deliberate inconsequence in our practice that leaves room for intuition and creative exploration that pushes our work beyond the obvious.
DESCRIBE YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS
We stand on the shoulders of a well-rooted history and heritage, something that was not constructed all at once but has naturally arisen over time. It is in this accumulation of knowledge, in the meeting between the created and the arising and the special property of time to evoke resonant layers, that we work. At its inception, Spacon & X aimed to rethink the frameworks of a design studio, pushing the boundaries of what a creative workspace might look like and exploring the space as a dynamic platform for experiments, as well as cross-disciplinary collaborations. In contrast to many other more traditional architecture and design studios, our team aims to allow and enhance the employees' individuality and ability to push creative boundaries. Having a dedicated space in our material lab allows the employees to explore and experiment with physical and digital materials. We see the importance in the creative processes of combining analogue, more tactile methods and handwork with innovative digital tools and platforms. Our studio is not just a workplace. It's an open-office design that allows for cross-collaboration and creative freedom, where it would be almost impossible to stay within one rigid box. We believe that such design
and environment motivate people because they can explore areas that can become their passion and allow for their professional growth and evolution. As a result of our cross-disciplinary team, which includes architects, designers, design engineers, graphic designers and product designers, as well as sculptors, weavers, and carpenters, we can naturally take on projects on a variety of scales, from large-scale building projects to set design and furniture production. We aim to attain an at-home creative process, radically questioning the lifeline of the design industry and shaping it to fit a fluid, interdisciplinary approach that embraces continuous evolution and authentic storytelling. Too often, architects complete projects and move on without revisiting them, but in this new age of circularity and sustainability, Spacon & X seeks to create a space where every element can be re-evaluated and celebrated.
HOW DO YOU GET UNSTUCK CREATIVELY?
One approach to getting unstuck creatively is to question the status quo, and I believe that the future of our field can be built by creatives daring to imagine beyond the obvious. By doing so, you allow yourself to creatively push boundaries to create different spaces, always with a strong and individual spatial identity and a degree of flexibility and adaptability for the viewer and people using the spaces so that the designs will always be approachable.
At Spacon & X, we believe in the power of questioning the status quo. This approach is evident in our portfolio, which showcases projects where we have dared to Fail and explore. By questioning our own and others' intent, approach, and direction, we allow ourselves to understand a broader range of potentials. This philosophy is clear in our approach to balancing understanding and listening to clients.' needs while challenging those and coming up with a different answer or new perspective.
WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS BEFORE BEGINNING A NEW PROJECT?
At Spacon & X, we strive to design spaces with a strong sense of identity through functional and aesthetic elements that tell stories and generate long-lasting impressions and value for those inhabiting them. At the very beginning of a project, I always try to understand the client's core values, their processes, their general character, and, more importantly, how people affiliate with the space and brand. As such, I strive to design something that not only follows trends but rather reflects the core of what takes place within a space and what the client's identity is to create spaces that unite around shared values and beliefs. The more character, personality, and identity a space or object is filled with, the more you will connect with it and the less outdated it will feel. However, designing with flexibility as a critical aspect leaves room for the space to evolve and adapt.
" I WORK FLUENTLY IN THE FIELDS OF DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE, AND ART, NOT HAVING TO DEFINE IF I AM ONE OR THE OTHER. THE BEAUTY LIES IN THE COEXISTENCE."
Inside the creative hub of Spacon & X, the studio showcases a harmonious blend of innovative design and material exploration.
The space features an eclectic mix of furniture, carefully selected objects, and a vibrant material library, where textures and colors collide to inspire new projects.
Together with my sister Barbara Hvidt, I have an art project, Les Mains des Soeurs, working with a series of chapters in a larger narrative, focusing on craftsmanship and exploring the intimate relations that exist between the hand and the object as well as our sisterhood, where the first chapter presents an intimate collection of jewellery that explores the tactile potential amidst the softness of amber and the The firmness of silver is elevated in ceramic boxes.
TELL US ABOUT A PROJECT THAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT.
I have been working on a range of projects that I still look back on with a warm heart. One of them is POPL burger restaurant, which we did for Rene Redzepi and the Noma family. This was truly a unique experience. Working with the team and values behind Noma, their uncompromising level of craftsmanship, care for each detail, and high sensorial experiences, and then getting the opportunity to translate these values into a spatial experience in a more democratised burger restaurant. Most recently, we have been putting together a publication to celebrate our 10year anniversary. The publication, titled "A Complete Work in Progress," is really an honest zoom into our process, our culture, our workflow, and our design processes. The entire book is an open invitation to explore Spacon & X's journey over the past decade. Arranged in an office-core inspired binder with removable chapters, the publication aims to reflect the studio's commitment to fluidity and experimentation in design. It is rebellious in its nature, going against the traditional understanding of completed architectural works on display, and hoping to expand the boundaries of architecture into a more experimental and experiential framework. The publication's experimental format and content highlight the studio's commitment to authenticity, creativity, and ongoing innovation. In truth, it is a letter of love to 10 years of design: learning, making, celebrating, failing, and sharing that in every way. We are super proud of the publication, and we can't wait to open up this conversation about process and culture on a bigger scale in the industry.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OBJECT IN YOUR HOME?
Some of my favourite objects in my home are a round coffee table with sculptural oval legs by Axel Einar Hjort and an organically shaped stool in solid olive wood. I have always been collecting stools as they have such a unique sculptural feature whilst simultaneously being functional. My various stools have their own personalities, stories and designs, capturing different memories from their origin. I come from a creative and artistic family, where there was a lot of care and focus on materials and the origin of things. It is interesting to see how much one's personal family heritage has filled and influenced one's own choices in life - not least in my home, where everything is carefully selected and finds its place through the inherent qualities of things or has been made for a specific function and ritual – enhancing and cherishing the rituals of every day at home.
The X-chair by Hvidt&Mølgaard, designed by my grandfather Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard in 1959, has a high affectional value to me. It has been in my home since I was born, and it reminds me of my family heritage.
WHICH TRAVEL DESTINATION DO YOU ALWAYS RETURN TO?
Japan is a destination I would love to return to again and again. Its unique culture, along with its rich design traditions and deep respect for craftsmanship, continually inspires me. Additionally, we are working on some new projects in Shanghai and Seoul, which are quickly becoming some of my favorite places as well.

IRIS & DAVE
REVEAL THE INSIDE SCOOP ON THEIR MUSICAL PLAYGROUND.
Iris Gold, known for her powerful performances and heartfelt lyrics, and Dave Stewart, the legendary Eurythmics co-founder, discuss their journey together, the creation of their latest project, and their personal insights into the music industry.
Iris and Dave Stewart's collaboration began in a rather unconventional way. Iris recounts how Dave first saw her perform at the Cannes Music Festival. "I was on a tiny boat stage, and apparently, the footage from that performance made its way to Dave," she shares. "He saw it and said, 'I want to work with that girl.'" Their first conversation was through Skype, where Iris was immediately drawn to Dave’s infectious energy. "I liked him immediately. His voice was warm and genuine" Iris says, reflecting on their initial connection. Eventually, we met in person in London, and it just clicked. He even had me perform a Eurythmics song on a table in his hotel room, which he filmed and sent to Nile Rodgers. "I realized straight away she wasn't just a regular songwriter sitting in the house. Iris was crazy. And I love crazy people, Dave says.”
SOUNDS LIKE QUITE THE MEETING!
Oh, it was Dave replied. Around the same time, I was gearing up for my first rehearsal—just as Nile Rodgers asked me to play at this gig at the Festival Hall, part of the Meltdown festival in London. David Bowie and Patti Smith had all curated it before, and this time, it was Nile’s turn. So, I put together this band of insanely talented musicians. I found some of them just by scrolling through hashtags on Instagram and
DM'ing them. Before you know it, we were on stage at the World Festival Hall. Iris, of course, was up for anything and joined us to sing "I Love You Like a Ball and Chain." That’s where it all started.
CREATING DURING CRISIS: THE ISLAND ALBUM
The collaboration truly took flight when Dave invited Iris to record an album in the Caribbean during the COVID lockdown. Their creative process was fluid and organic, much like how Dave had worked with Annie Lennox in the past. “Working with Dave was like an adventure or a movie," Iris describes. "Dave is very eccentric and has this intense energy. He believes every song should come together in 15 minutes or less, which brings a lot of adrenaline to the process." Dave’s approach to music is hands-on, often playing multiple instruments himself, though he humorously admits his drumming skills are a bit rough. "He wanted it to be raw and real," Iris adds. Their time together in the Caribbean was not just productive but also deeply enjoyable, filled with music, video shoots. “Dave’s coffee brand kept us fueled—it's incredibly potent!”
Dave adds, Yeah, right when COVID hit, she made it to the island I live on, just in time, through Cuba, no less! Stayed for three months, and we made an album. Shot
REALIZED STRAIGHT AWAY SHE
“I
WASN'T
JUST A REGULAR SONGWRITER SITTING IN THE HOUSE. IRIS WAS CRAZY. AND I LOVE CRAZY PEOPLE”
some videos too—one of them was wild. Iris wanted to film this song we wrote called "Woman" while riding down the street naked on a horse. Now, she’s terrified of horses, mind you. But there she was, conquering her biggest fear, stark naked on a horse. The guy who brought the horses was already half-drunk when he realised she’d never ridden a horse before. It was all a bit precarious, but it turned out great!
THAT DEFINITELY SOUNDS LIKE A MOMENT!
Oh, there are many with Iris, but that one definitely takes the biscuit! After the shoot, she hops off the horse and asks me to take a picture—make sure to get the c-section scar in it, she said. So, there I was, on a stone, with just an iPhone, taking pictures of naked Iris. And wouldn’t you know it, the owner of the house just walks down like, “How are you doing?”
HOW THE MUSICAL CHEMISTRY LIKE BETWEEN YOU TWO?
Oh, it was magic from the start, Dave says. We didn’t fight at all, just wrote songs in about eight minutes. Most of the tracks started on an acoustic guitar in the garden, then quickly moved into this little cottage I had set up like a studio. We’d just go with the gut feeling—capture the essence first, you know? That’s
the same approach I had with Annie (Lenox). It’s all about the feeling.
Dave’s approach was refreshingly unconventional Iris adds. He played most of the instruments himself and encouraged a raw, unpolished sound. His eccentricity and passion made every session exciting. We captured so much footage of him running around, playing different instruments, and creating a unique vibe. Iris’s willingness to dive into this experimental space made our collaboration truly special. We pushed boundaries and experimented with sounds and techniques that we might not have explored otherwise. "She's fearless," Dave says, almost in awe.
Their mutual respect and admiration are clear, as is the chemistry that fuels their collaboration. As they continue to create and perform, their partnership stands as a testament to what happens when two uniquely creative souls find each other.
Despite the years and the many phases of their careers, both Iris and Dave retain that essential rockstar edge— something that’s palpable when they talk about their work and experiences. Dave’s stories are peppered with the kind of wild, almost surreal moments that only seem to happen to legends. And Iris? She fits right in.
DAVE
Dave Stewart is a legendary figure in the music world, best known as one-half of the iconic duo Eurythmics alongside Annie Lennox. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Stewart has not only helped shape the sound of the '80s with timeless hits like "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" but has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in music history. From co-writing and producing with the likes of Mick Jagger, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan to working alongside Stevie Nicks, Aretha Franklin, and Bono, Stewart's influence extends far beyond his own performances. His creative genius is matched only by his drive to innovate, whether through his musical collaborations, groundbreaking production work, or ventures like his own coffee brand. In this exclusive interview, Stewart opens up about his extraordinary journey, sharing candid stories from his time with music's elite and offering a glimpse into the mind of a true rock 'n' roll visionary.
YOU’RE PERFORMING IN DENMARK TONIGHT. HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO EARLIER IN YOUR CAREER?
I’ve been to Denmark before, but this is my first time performing in Tivoli. My approach to live performances hasn’t really changed much over the years. I always strive to make it a show, not just standing around playing. I pick my musicians carefully—they’re all spectacular and gifted, like our bass player, Julia, or the harmonica player from Brazil. It’s a musical experience where the songs come alive, and the audience usually goes nuts, especially when we play “Sweet Dreams.”
“SWEET DREAMS” HAS BECOME AN ICONIC SONG. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ITS LEGACY?
It’s funny because “Sweet Dreams” was meant to be a very dark, dystopian song, but it’s turned into this global anthem that’s constantly played at EDM festivals, movies, everywhere. Annie and I were a bit confused by that at first, but when we play it live, the audience just goes wild. It’s something that’s transcended generations—kids today still know the song, and it’s never off the radio.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR TIME WITH EURYTHMICS, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HAPPIEST MEMORIES?
The happiest moments are often simple, like having coconut water in the morning. But one of the standout memories was when we first hit number one in America. Annie and I were in a hotel room in San Francisco, and our manager called to tell us. We didn’t know what to do, so we just jumped around on the bed in excitement. Later, at the gig, the audience was so wild that we could hardly hear ourselves play. It was an incredible experience.
WHAT’S ONE OF THE WILDEST EXPERIENCES YOU’VE HAD ON STAGE?
The wildest? Well, there was this time in Paris when I took some LSD a few hours before a show. By the time I went on stage, I was peaking. The roadie put the guitar on me, and I started playing, thinking everything was fine—only to realize I was facing the wrong way! The roadies had to turn me around. That was just a normal musical experience, though. I have other wild stories, but I probably shouldn’t go into them!
YOU’VE SEEN AND WORKED WITH SO MANY LEGENDS. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MUSICAL DECADE?
My favorite year in music was 1971. That year, David Bowie released Hunky Dory, Lou Reed put out Transformer, and Neil Young gave us Harvest. It was an incredible time for music, right after the 60s and before the explosion of punk. I’ve met Bowie many times, and he’s one of those artists who truly shaped that era. The music from that time still resonates with me.
YOU'VE VENTURED INTO DIFFERENT AREAS BEYOND MUSIC. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR COFFEE BRAND?
Yeah, I have this coffee called Wake the Fuck Up Coffee. It's pretty strong stuff, and I've got a tea called Shut the Fuck Up Tea—a kind of sleepy time tea. It’s all part of the fun. I’m a coffee guy in the morning and a martini guy by evening. I even have a protein coffee! The weirdest coffee I’ve had was in Vietnam. It was made from weasel poop—literally. We drank it, and all three of us were shaking, standing on the street afterward, trying to figure out how to get back to where we came from. It was almost like a psychedelic experience, like those old days when people took blues to stay awake.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR LEGACY TO BE?
I’ve been working on something for about 24 years to help artists navigate the challenges of the modern music industry. It’s hard to explain, but it’s something that will make artists very happy. I’ve always tried to support other artists, whether through my independent label or this new project. It’s about giving back to the community and helping artists thrive.
SPEAKING OF ARTISTS, WHAT’S NEXT FOR IRIS GOLD?
Iris is a phenomenal artist, and we’ve become great friends. She’s already done a little tour with us, and we’re planning more. I think she deserves a feature film about her life—something intense and real, with her music at the center. She’s an amazing live performer, and as she becomes more known, she’ll have the freedom to do whatever she wants. I’m excited to see where her career goes from here.
IRIS
Iris, known for her evocative and deeply personal music, has captivated audiences with her unique sound and commitment to social causes. As an artist who blends various musical influences with her own introspective style, Irishas carved out a distinctive space in the music world. Her ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level hasearned her a devoted following and critical acclaim.
YOU MENTIONED THAT YOUR LATEST SONG, BOYS BOYS BOYS IS BASED ON A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WAS CHALLENGING. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THE MESSAGES YOU HOPE TO CONVEY THROUGH IT?
Absolutely. The song is rooted in my own experience with an unhealthy relationship and abuse at a young age. When I first encountered Plan International, I was moved by their approach and the genuine kindness of their team. They understood the nuances of these difficult conversations without making you feel interrogated.
My collaboration with them was inspired by their work to combat violence against children and women globally. We aimed to present a fresh perspective on such issues, moving away from the outdated, onesided imagery often used in campaigns. By showing that violence can occur anywhere—in both the Western world and in places like Zimbabwe, where we shot the video—we aimed to highlight that the struggle is universal. The goal was to raise funds and awareness to help those affected and to advocate for equal opportunities to escape violent situations. I performed it last night in Austria. It was a bit nervewracking because most of the audience didn’t know who I was. It was also my first time playing with a full band, after doing acoustic sets all summer. I shared my story with the audience, and the mood changed dramatically. The slogan we use, “No means no,” really resonated, especially at the Sisters Festival, which was a female-focused event. The energy from the women there was incredible—they were chanting “No means no” along with me. Seeing the fire in their eyes was so powerful and moving.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INFLUENCES, AND HOW DO THEY SHAPE YOUR MUSIC?
Dave Stewart is definitely an influence, but apart from him, I look up to artists like Gwen Stefani, Kelis, and Nelly Furtado. Their impact on music and their unique styles have inspired me. I’m working on a new album now that aims to be empowering and sensual, drawing on these influences to create something fresh and strong.
IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANY ARTIST, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
I would love to collaborate with Bob Marley or Erykah Badu. Bob Marley for his iconic messages and freedom vibes, and Erykah Badu for her fashion sense and the way she made motherhood cool without letting it define her. Both represent a spirit of authenticity and creativity that I admire.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR MUSIC CAREER, CHARITY WORK, AND BEING A MOM?
Balancing all these aspects is challenging, but it’s
manageable with the right support system. My work with Plan International and other charities often intertwines with my music career. For instance, I’ve been involved in a tour focused on menstrual health, which allowed me to contribute to a cause I care about while performing. Being a mom adds another layer of complexity, but prioritising and having a supportive network helps me navigate it all.
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR MUSIC?
I find inspiration everywhere, but nature is particularly refreshing. It clears my mind and offers a new perspective. After a challenging period, the creativity flows more freely, and I’ve had moments where a song just comes together in a short span. Nature helps in neutralizing my thoughts and rejuvenating my creativity.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, IN TODAY’S INDUSTRY?
My advice would be to stay true to yourself and resist conforming to societal expectations. It’s important not to fit into a predefined box. People will always try to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do, but ultimately, your authenticity is what resonates. When people see that you are passionate about what you’re doing, it shows. Be who you want to be, and don’t let others dictate your path.

I haven’t felt nervous yet, but I’m sure it will hit me soon. Performing live is my favourite part of being an artist, though. It’s where I feel most alive. He’s going to meet Dave for the first time, and I’m excited to see these two important men in my life connect.
LASTLY, HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR MUSIC EVOLVING IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

THE ART OF INGREDIENT PAIRINGS
CREATING A SKINCARE ROUTINE IS AKIN TO COMPOSING A SYMPHONY, AND HARMONIOUS INGREDIENT PAIRINGS CAN ELEVATE THE PERFORMANCE. HERE’S HOW TO COMBINE INGREDIENTS FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS.
VITAMIN C AND VITAMIN E
When used together, this dynamic duo enhances antioxidant protection. Vitamin C brightens and fights free radicals, while vitamin E provides additional antioxidant defence. Apply vitamin C in the morning and vitamin E at night for the best results.
NIACINAMIDE AND HYALURONIC ACID
Layering these two ingredients can yield impressive benefits. Niacinamide calms inflammation, minimizes pores, and enhances the skin’s barrier function, while hyaluronic acid provides deep hydration. Apply niacinamide first to address specific concerns, followed by hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture.
GLYCOLIC ACID AND RETINOL
Combining these powerful exfoliants requires careful consideration. To avoid overexfoliation and irritation, introduce them gradually into your routine. Use glycolic acid in the evening and retinol on alternate nights.
RETINOL AND HYALURONIC ACID
While retinol can be drying, hyaluronic acid comes to the rescue. Apply hyaluronic acid before retinol to combat dryness and maintain optimal hydration levels.
VITAMIN C AND NIACINAMIDE
Contrary to past concerns about their compatibility, recent research suggests that vitamin C and niacinamide can coexist. To ensure harmony, introduce them gradually into your routine or apply one in the morning and the other in the evening. Some users with sensitive skin may still experience irritation therefore it is essential to monitor skin reactions when introducing these ingredients together.
RETINOL AND ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS (AHAS)
Retinol and AHAs are potent exfoliants; using them together can lead to sensitivity and irritation. To avoid this, use them at different times. Apply retinol at night and AHAs during your morning routine. However, some experienced users can layer these ingredients with proper skin tolerance built over time.
NIACINAMIDE AND VITAMIN C (L-ASCORBIC ACID)
The compatibility of niacinamide and vitamin C has been debated, but recent research suggests they can be used together. If you’re concerned, you can still apply them at different times of the day or on alternate days.
ARMED WITH A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SKINCARE INGREDIENTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS, YOU CAN CRAFT A SKINCARE ROUTINE THAT ADDRESSES YOUR UNIQUE CONCERNS AND GOALS.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY TO ACHIEVING THE BEST RESULTS, AND IT’S ALWAYS WISE TO CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST OR SKINCARE PROFESSIONAL FOR PERSONALISED GUIDANCE. ALSO, WE NEED TO EMPHASISE THE IMPORTANCE OF PATCH TESTING WHEN INTRODUCING NEW PRODUCTS OR COMBINATIONS. THIS STEP IS CRUCIAL IN PREVENTING ADVERSE REACTIONS, ESPECIALLY WHEN DEALING WITH POTENT ACTIVES LIKE RETINOL AND AHAS.
HAPPY SKINCARE JOURNEY!
REST DAYS
We all need some days off once in a while, and the same goes for your skin. It's good practice to incorporate "off days" or "slugging" days, where you indulge your skin with soothing hydration masks or creams.
THE REBELS OF SKINCARE
THE YROLÍ FOUNDERS
Five years ago, fueled by frustration with the skincare industry’s standard ingredients, Jette and Trine-Lise set out to disrupt the norm. With a shared vision and unwavering commitment to their values, they embarked on a journey still unfolding. Armed with backgrounds in health and communications, they brought a unique perspective to the table, challenging conventional wisdom and paving the way for a new era of skincare.
Yrolí isn’t just a skincare brand—it’s a revolution. With their innovative One Layer philosophy and commitment to environmental sustainability, Jette and Trine-Lise aim to simplify skincare and empower consumers to embrace their natural beauty.
Words JOHANNA CHRISTENSEN Photos YROLÍ
HOW DID YOU MEET?
Five years ago, driven by our passion for skincare and a deep concern for the environment, we founded Yrolí. As consumers, we felt like hostages in an industry that sold empty promises, complicated routines, and low-quality products with synthetic ingredients. Yrolí is what we were missing. We wanted to change the industry from within and provide an alternative that was not only effective but also responsible and sustainable.
We have been close friends for 15 years, so we knew we could count on each other, but more importantly, we had the same core values. It is one thing to be friends. It is a whole different thing to become business partners. We promised each other that we would never lose sight of our core values as they are the very backbone of us as individuals and the foundation on which we built Yrolí. It goes without saying that we have had to make some difficult decisions throughout the years, but when we have been in doubt, we have often had the same gut feeling. Our friendship is, therefore, resourceful professionally, as we know each other so well. Further, we have a background in health and communications, so we complement one another and together we have quite a unique skill set. We see it as a strength that we have not worked in the beauty industry before, so our approach and what we bring to the industry is often unconventional, which is exactly how we want it to be! Our story is therefore the core of our brand philosophy.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YROLÍ?
When we started in 2018, our One Layer skincare philosophy was quite innovative, as was our Blue Beauty approach, which had not reached Denmark yet. We wanted to challenge complex skincare regimes where people get lost in ingredients, a range of products and routines AND challenge the overconsumption and waste produced by the beauty industry.
There needs to be more understanding when effective skincare and environmental sustainability are compared as either-or. Our skin and planet are better off with “less but better”. That was and still is today our motivation – to reimagine skincare in a new, simple, and conscious way by supporting what is natural and healthy for our skin and for our planet.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE MEANING OF THE NAME?
The most important part of our name is the first letter” y”. The capital” Y” symbolises our “why”. Yrolí is a valuedriven skincare brand that we thought was crucial to include as a central part of the name. The “ro” refers to the Danish word for calm. We need to slow down
and be more conscious of our skin. We must listen to our skin and what it needs if we want healthy skin. It gets stressed if you overexpose the skin with too many products and layers. The accent over the “i” represents the future and our long-term commitment.
CAN YOU SHARE THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE CREATION OF YROLÍ AND THE PHILOSOPHY THAT DRIVES YOUR BRAND?
We support skin health through One-Layer microbiome-gentle skincare. Our skincare philosophy is based on One-Layer skincare and simple routines, as we believe that the best your skin can be is natural. The skin is very capable, so we need to let it do its own work. Our skincare is developed to support and collaborate with the skin’s natural processes, which is exactly what your skin needs and how it becomes healthy.
Healthy skin is not only the result of good products but also of understanding and supporting the skin’s natural processes. We are concerned with what your skin can do on its own, why it is important to respect its natural balance and why less is more when it comes to skin care.
Our formulations work with the skin by accelerating and supporting natural processes, balancing the skin’s microbiome, and having a slow-aging effect. Skin health is our top priority, as healthy skin leads to beautiful skin—not the other way around.
WHAT ARE THE DEFINING MOMENTS IN YOUR JOURNEY?
Many years ago, we were browsing through the skincare section at a Danish department store and were overwhelmed by the number of products. Even though we gave up and left without buying anything, that experience was so defining for us. Was skincare so complicated, or was it just a commercial illusion to sell more products? We talked a lot about our experience that afternoon, and at one point, one of us asked, “What does our skin actually need?”. That was the beginning of Yrolí. That question is our foundation and why we focus on skin health and have a One Layer philosophy.
Another defining moment was when we signed with a big Danish production laboratory, which provided us with the necessary volume to expand. It was such a complicated process since we had no previous experience. When we finally got the deal in place, it was the biggest victory and a true feeling of “we made it!”
HOW DOES YROLÍ INTEGRATE RESPONSIBILITY INTO EVERY ASPECT OF ITS SKINCARE LINE?
CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THE BRAND’S COMMITMENT TO LESS CONSUMPTION AND SIMPLE ROUTINES?
All the decisions we make are centered around skin health and our Blue Beauty mindset. The beauty of it is that what is good for our skin is also suitable for our planet. For example, we don’t use synthetic sulfates, as they dry out the skin rather than making it healthy. In addition, synthetic sulfates have an unknown degradation time. We don’t use microplastics, silicones, or Teflon, as these ingredients harm the skin and the environment.
It is also deliberate that we have a small product range. The skin does not benefit from getting the most, but the best. Meanwhile, a smaller product range means less production, less transportation, fewer resources, and less cosmetic waste. The same applies to not having outer packaging, as it does not benefit the skin, but more importantly, it is wasted the minute it is produced.
It is also essential for us to be certified, as our credibility is closely linked to transparency and traceability. Once again, the skin and the planet benefit from our certifications. Today, we are Ecocert Cosmos, Vegan, AllergyCertified, and Svanemærket.
HOW DID THE CONCEPT OF BLUE BEAUTY INFLUENCE YOUR BRAND, AND HOW DOES YROLÍ CONTRIBUTE TO PROTECTING THE WORLD’S SEAS AND ECOSYSTEMS?
With our commitment to push for change, we need to “walk the talk”. The opposite is not an option if we want to make an impact, as we would be another skincare brand with empty ambitions. With a Blue Beauty mindset, our consciousness goes beyond clean or green. It all comes down to which choices we make. We choose to produce responsible skincare with a significant effect on the skin and a minimal environmental footprint. We also select safe, sustainable, and sea-safe ingredients and recycled, reusable, or refillable packaging.
We carefully choose ingredients that are readily biodegradable and do not disturb the natural aquatic environment, the sea, or the coral reef. Therefore, the ingredients can be part of nature’s cycle without polluting the aquatic environment.
YROLÍ HAS MADE MANY UNCOMPROMISING CHOICES. CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT SPECIFIC DECISIONS MADE TO MEET BLUE BEAUTY’S CRITERIA?
An important part of our Blue Beauty commitment is how and which ingredients we select for our
formulations. All our signature ingredients contribute to good biodiversity and diversity, which benefits us all. We choose wild-harvested, organic, and natural ingredients and avoid ingredients from vulnerable biotopes. We only choose synthetic ingredients when they are more ethical, environmentally friendly, or safe.
Our skincare contains oils and extracts from wild-harvested Nordic berries such as bilberries, raspberries, and cloudberries that grow under the midnight sun in Finland in a natural environment. Additionally, we prioritise sourcing ingredients from places where we also support social projects. Our baobab and marula oils are from African trees from well-established Ecocert Cosmos-certified farms. We try to minimise transportation as much as possible, so our products are produced in Denmark. Our packaging is 100% recyclable and made from recycled materials whenever possible. Our plastic packaging is from Poland, and the glass packaging is from Italy. Further, we have no outer packaging to minimise production resources, transportation, and waste.
HOW
DO YOU BALANCE CREATING SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT DELIVER EFFECTIVE RESULTS AND ENSURING THEY MEET THE HIGH SUSTAINABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY STANDARDS?
One-layer skincare is excellent for the skin and our environmental footprint, as you use fewer products and leave less cosmetic waste. That is the beauty of it— our skincare challenges overconsumption and offers an alternative for your skin and our planet.
WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE?
This year has been quite eventful, as we are introducing new products to our range and adjusting our visual identity. We are also launching our new skincare concept, BIQ, which will be a cliffhanger for now! Our top priority is to become B Corp certified; we have already started the work to get there. It is essential that the credibility we have built Yrolí on continues and that we make the right choices, which are not always the easiest but help secure the future of Yrolí.
In the long term, we wish to lead in setting the future direction for skincare, where healthy skin is the focus rather than stigmatised beauty ideals. We want to be your go-to One Layer Blue Beauty skincare brand. We will always strive for new goals because we can constantly improve. It is not about being the best in the world but the best for the world. That is Yrolí’s raison d’être.
