SPRD continues to move forward with the repurposing of the elementary school to be a multiuse community center. The district has already completed a feasibility study which identified the need for a minor remodel to maximize the use of the facility. Currently the district is working with an architecture firm to finalize the details of the remodel. Top projects include making a community gathering space, creating a fitness studio, and adding accessible restrooms. Additionally, the district has been working with a consultant to develop a conceptual design for the outdoor space at the site. “Ideally, the outdoor space will support the operations at the center but also serve as a standalone park. We would love to see a variety of amenities at this park that serve all ages and demographics of our community,” says Jennifer Holland, executive director at Sisters Park & Recreation District. “It is also important for the community to understand that any amenity that is added needs to be self-sustaining. At this time, the district does not have the ability to provide additional subsidy for ongoing operations which would be required for many large-scale features such as a community pool.” The district has hosted two community engagement nights as well as provided an online survey so community members could share their thoughts on the future use of the space. After compiling data and factoring in outcomes from recent studies, such as the City of Sisters Parks Master Plan, the following amenities ranked the highest: playgrounds both pre-K and for ages 5-12, youth athletic fields, and courts for pickleball, basketball, and multi-use. This information has been used to develop a draft conceptual design. District staff will now work with the board of directors to determine the final design, including amenity selection, and a funding mechanism. To stay up to date on this project, please visit https://sistersrecreation.com/district-information/ new-community-center/.
