Your complete guide to playground matting, surfacing and shade solutions
Numat PLAY 2016
It’s time to get serious about play. Be it with small steps or great feats you need to know their experience on the field and through the playground is dependably safe and wholly exciting. Our goal is simple: to grow imaginations, to protect bodies, to inspire action. We do so by ensuring our products are of the greatest quality and that they are installed to the highest standard.

Numat PLAY 2016
In early childhood centres, schools, sports fields and playgrounds across New Zealand we assess, design, install and maintain a wide range of surface, structure and shade solutions as part of our work providing the very best in play landscapes. Good playground surfacing doesn’t just take the ‘ouch’ out of ‘oops’. It instigates play, encourages exploration and inspires imagination. It protects, challenges and grows. And, ultimately, it ensures safe, happy and thriving children. We deliver such results by carefully managing the entire process of playscape development. From initial assessment through to construction we make certain every client receives both service and products uniquely crafted and correctly fitting their specific requirements.
Our History
Our Values
The first steps of our company were taken by father and son duo Peter and Mike Judd. They established Numat in the mid 1990s after seeing a strong need for dependable matting products in the local agricultural industry.
Seek the best sources. We take pride in both the domestic and international networks we’ve forged over the years and the quality this in turn provides to our customers. Raw materials must deliver proven capability and be from recycled materials where possible for a sustainable, forwardthinking focus.
With a hugely positive response to these products the company quickly found its feet. Soon after we discovered a lack of quality surfacing options for the playground market and so applied our product knowledge and professional diligence to this opportunity. In the years since we have expanded into other sectors and introduced new products for gym and automotive applications. We started off in a small shed – a two-man operation with the vision for matting solutions that went beyond the surface. Now, with over 20 team members, a global network of suppliers and nationwide sales and service coverage, we continue to step ahead.
Innovate and elevate. Providing a range of products to an equally large range of end uses requires specialist knowledge and focused understanding. We have worked hard to build a reputation for innovation. We work closely with our customers to clearly understand their needs – and adapt and evolve our product range accordingly. Don’t stand for just laying it down. Only by looking at a project or product from every angle, from initial scoping to final installation to future use, we can tailor our work to suit individual requirements. When our customers succeed we do too. We take pride in the strength and longevity of our products. Likewise we aspire for the same in our customer relationships. Being family owned and operated we know the importance of personal integrity.

Care for people Kids love to climb higher and go faster. Yes, we must always encourage them to do so. But we must also be ready for when they fall.
We have produced fall zone safety surfacing for more than 15 years. In this time our systems have consistently delivered for community, school and pre-school playgrounds. These systems have fully certified Critical Fall Height (CFH) factors of up to three metres. The CFH of our safety surfacing is increased by the installation of additional shockpads under the top layer of matting. You can feel the difference these soft, shock-absorbent rubber surfaces provide. Numat is tested and certified in accordance with NZS5828:2004 Playground Equipment and Surfacing Standards in New Zealand. Our shock absorption performance is evaluated by the HIC (Head Injury Criterion) test, a careful analysis that measures fall impact through multi-axial deceleration. A second test measures kinetic energy at impact, in which a standardised head, equipped with highly sensitive acceleration sensors, undergoes free fall. These tests are comprehensive and exacting – and with good reason. Each year in New Zealand approximately 7400 children aged 15 years and under are treated at emergency departments for injuries sustained while using playground equipment, More than 1100 are subsequently hospitalised. Many of the injuries are a result from falls. When fall heights exceeded 2.5 metres 55% of equipment did not have impact absorbing surfaces below it. Of those that did, only 4% complied with the safe fall requirement.

Care for the planet There are over one billion tyres manufactured worldwide each year. Each has a limited lifespan on the vehicle it is originally intended for. And then what? How do you turn this wide-ranging, long-term waste into a valuable resource? Sometimes the answer is at your feet…
We are committed to environmentally friendly products and sustainable manufacturing processes. Almost all of our matting products are made from rubber recycled from waste vehicle tyres using a clean and efficient recycling process in New Zealand, Europe or Canada. Rubber used in these tyres comes from sustainable forests of the Pará rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. On average over 1500 tyres are used for the 200m2 of Pour’n’Play matting. Our dedication to reducing, recycling and reusing ensures we can minimise wastage as we maximize play spaces. This is a company-wide mindset – our work is about small feet, great feats and, with our focus on sustainability, a smaller footprint for our business. We also take pride in the long-lasting strength of our product range. We scope each project and deliver well-matched, correctly fitted solutions to ensure our customers have a carefree future. Ours is not a ‘throwaway’ product. And that’s what it’s all about: taking care, growing up, protecting bodies and sharing adventures, be it with this generation or the next.

The most technically advanced surfacing system in New Zealand, Pour’n’Play is the ideal choice for all types of community spaces. As a single or multiple layer, depending on the application, this surface is great for schools, physical education facilities, gyms, weight rooms, climbing areas or around pools and splash pads.
The top layer of Pour’n’Play is a choice of granular recycled rubber High Quality Pure Colour granules. Varying combinations of both are possible and there are impressive solutions to suit any budgetary constraints. The colour is totally consistent throughout the top of this layer, ensuring it looks good for years to come. The installation process requires exacting diligence.
The matting also has soundproofing and insulating abilities, making it a viable option for both inside and outside spaces. Depending on the layer thickness a range of Critical Fall Height measures can be met.
Colour Range: Page 54/55
Following the design stage, a course recycled rubber base is poured on site. Then the fine grained colour top layer is poured on, which then melds with the base for a strong final product. Pour’n’Play is scuff and scratch resistant, protected against UV and weather extremes and has a high flame tolerance.
Made in colour: There are fourteen colours from which to choose for your Pour’n’Play project. However when different colours are used in different ratios that scope is widened to include thousands of combinations. We can help create unique colourways for any patterns, logos or lines in your design.

PermaPlay It may look like grass but PermaPlay serves a much greater purpose in a fall zone. We developed this super-realistic synthetic grass to be backed by a long-lasting shock absorbing underlay. For safe, straightforward play across every type of outdoor condition it’s the ideal solution.
Made for:
Made with:
As the name suggests, PermaPlay is ideally suited to playgrounds – particularly at pre-schools and schools.
The top layer of PermaPlay is our highly regarded MultiCourt, an all-weather, premium quality synthetic turf. Underneath this is the shockpad layer, which delivers the crucial safety standards. Made from either recycled rubber shred or recycled foam, it is bonded together to form a strong and stable shockpad.
The Critical Fall Height (CFH) provided by PermaPlay depends on the thickness of shockpads that are installed underneath. Our shockpads are made to 30mm, 50mm and 80mm thickness and, when laid onto a base course structure, deliver a CFH from 1.5m to 3.0m. Not only does PermaPlay bring a reassuring level of safety to the playground, but also it has the added benefit of looking great without the mowing. There’s no unsightly puddles and mud during the winter months too. Furthermore, a smart and economic solution to planning a play area can be achieved by using PermaPlay in fall zones and MultiCourt in areas of less risk. The end result is a seamless natural grass-like surface that serves a range of different purposes.
PermaPlay is fully certified to S5828:2004 in New Zealand and Australia, so you can rest assured that it is the right choice for your playground across the full range of modern play requirements.

Tile System
PlayTiles Adaptable, durable and encouragingly bouncy, our PlayTiles deliver unparalleled safety and bold colours to the modern New Zealand playground. Welcoming to the eye and soft on the joints, these tiles provide children of all ages with permission to play.
Made for: PlayTiles are anti-slip, with a textured surface and an exceptionally low friction level. They are made from recycled waste rubber tyres and are resilient to damage and highly flame tolerant. Each tile is made to exacting specifications and installed using a unique peg and glue system to ensure a perfect join, with tile alignment and an even surface delivering a seamless finish. Each tile is an easy-to-handle 1.0m x 0.5m and special edging tiles complete the look. Scientifically proven Critical Fall Height (CFH) factors range from any height up to 3.0m. While chiefly designed with playgrounds in mind the tiles have a heavily studded footprint and hard-wearing surface making them ideal for a wide range of environments. As footwear sinks into the surface and the tiles maintain integrity by ‘self-healing’ they can be used on pathways at sports grounds and golf courses where studded boots are worn. Easy to clean with a hose or hard broom, water also drains away efficiently and the tiles dry quickly.

MultiCourt MultiCourt is the perfect all-weather surface for football, hockey, tennis, netball, basketball, cricket‌ and any other games where a consistently smooth playing surface is vital. Used in stadiums worldwide this artificial turf gives you the chance to be on the side where the grass is always greener.
Made for:
Made with:
As an all-weather, free-draining, low maintenance surface MultiCourt is well recognised internationally as the industry-leading artificial turf. Used in both indoor and outdoor sports grounds, it is also ideal for lawn areas at schools, around swimming pools or in playgrounds.
UV resistant materials ensure MultiCourt will not rot, stain or discolour and, while the surface will inevitably get dirty, this can simply be hosed or swept away. MultiCourt is also permeable, so rain will soak right through without leaving water to pond on the surface. Lush, and with all the natural appeal of grass, the surface offers a low maintenance, high functionality surface option.
While MultiCourt looks like grass it never needs mowing or watering. It also has the benefit of being super hard wearing while being constructed in soft lowabrasive fibres. Moreover, and significantly for sports players, it provides shock absorbency, stable footing and improved traction. Dependably flat and conveniently adaptable, this is the turf that sets the standard in high performance.
Specifications Standard roll width 2.0 metres. Custom cut to length. 20mm & 30mm pile Installation accessories: • Permabond adhesive • Adhesive tape 300mm wide. Sand is teased down through the fibres to maximise stability.

SureFoot SureFoot is the best of both worlds – lush grass growing through high quality rubber matting. This surface minimises maintenance in high-use areas while reducing the risk of fall-related injuries. We worked hard to ensure SureFoot is both cost-effective and safety-conscious. You could say we’ve put our best foot forward so you won’t put a foot wrong.
Made for:
Made with:
Our SureFoot matting works well in areas that require extra effort to protect them from the rigours of daily foot traffic. It benefits playgrounds, grassy slopes next to sports fields, run-up zones in cricket nets and those little bits of lawn people inevitably use to take shortcuts over.
SureFoot mats are constructed of 100% natural rubber. The material is UV resistant and non-toxic and is extremely resilient to wear, tear and weathering.
Once it is correctly installed the lawn grows through the surface, the matting effectively disappears and the lawn is protected. As the mat is perforated and therefore free draining there is no mud, ponding or degradation of the turf – and it can still be mown as normal. Under playground equipment SureFoot is the ideal surface for fall protection zones. The mat acts as a shock absorber and, when installed on 100mm of sand, can provide a Critical Fall Height of up to 2.1 metres. Eliminating the need for bothersome raking to maintain bark or mulch, a single 1.0m x 1.5m mat is sufficient for up to one swing.
The mats can be joined together to form larger areas and secured with 350mm galvanised or 300mm plastic security pins. When laid on sand, the mat and sand layer are stabilised with Geotech Cloth.

Three60 Scope/ Design/ Build We provide a panoramic design and build service to our clients ensuring that the entire project is scoped correctly, designed expertly and built professionally.
The Three60 programme has been developed to provide our clients with reach in capability and peace of mind, delivering design creativity and build consistency and ensuring the final result exactly suits the budget, scope, size and play requirements.
This system starts with honest, open communication during the scoping and planning stages. An off-the-shelf solution might work but, more often than not, a combination of surfaces and construction techniques can provide the safest and most costeffective answer. We don’t push one product over another (or sometimes even our own products). Instead we’ll always assess each, be it planting, construction material, surfacing or equipment, from the end-use perspective. It’s got to deliver and deliver with consistent quality.
From here our in-house design team builds detailed overviews of the project. Our clients know exactly what goes where – and why. This team works closely with the installation team to make certain standards are kept high across the board. We have also recently initiated a new measurement of our success, a feedback programme whereby all customers fill out a comprehensive document on our efforts at the end of each project. This accountability is vital to the continued success of the Three60 programme – at the end of the day everything comes back to us.

The foundation of your success Prime2, our renowned base surfacing process, provides your playground with the finest of foundations – a carefully engineered, built-tough sub-layer.
Step 1: Excavation
The base layer beneath any playground surface needs to be both fit for purpose and enduring in firmness. For core strength and supreme safety our Prime-2 layer delivers a superior substructure to Kiwi playgrounds. Built to last year after year without any degradation in quality and consistency, Prime-2 provides peace of mind for the out of sight support.
Step 2: Geotextile layer
Like many things in life, achieving the right result means working your way up. To start the construction sequence we remove all surface vegetation and topsoil and excavate the site to the highest standard. We remove any weak materials from the surface before undertaking a sub-grade evaluation. From there a minimum of 100mm of high-grade supporting fill will be placed, ensuring our geotextile layer can go down over that with even consistency. Compaction is key here. From small bumps big problems grow – so we make certain everything is smooth and flat.
Step 3: Shockpad layer
One of the greatest strengths of a playground can be hard to see, but it’s nevertheless highly important. Prime2 provides this important capability with assured confidence.
Step 4: Grass
