We make things people will want to carry for years, not days. Well-made objects that look great on the outside and have a custom-printed lining on the inside featuring your logo or brand name transformed into a tasteful pattern. Every time someone opens a sleeve or a bag with your logo on the inside, they’ll be reminded that you’d rather whisper to them than shout to the masses.

The Art of Screenprinting SCREEN PRINTING is a long-held tradition in art and communication. The process is a form of stenciling. An impervious material (woven fabric) perforated with lettering or a design through which ink is forced onto a surface to create an image. The earliest screens were made of silk, coining the terminology “silkscreening.” Due to the hefty price and high value of silk, screens were replaced with more modern and inexpensive materials. These synthetic materials, though straying from the traditional practice, allow the screen to last longer and provide a sharper print than the old methods. The technique of modern screenprinting ranges greatly, including everything from automatic presses to fully manual hand tables. History aside, the true beauty of screen printing is the human element. There are certainly faster ways to produce printed goods! But each tool, material, and technique in screenprinting allows for the touch of a person. A craftsman. Someone who uses practice and precision to turn raw material into finished goods. Someone like Jacque, who has been screenprinting for over a decade.
12
Jacque’s occupation as a screenprinter requires her to create and perform with skill and dexterity. Checking the ink and screen for imperfections, blocking the screen, aligning the frame to the canvas, the countless test runs and adjustments; attention to detail is vitally important in every step. From squeegee to screen to press, Jacque has a level of involvement in the creation of each tool. She has to know her tools and how they behave in order to produce the best work. She notes the smallest misprint and imperfection in each pull of the ink across the screen, modifying as she goes. Jacque knows her trade and works to create the highest quality in her finished products. To be a screenprinter requires an enormous amount of skill, patience, and commitment to hard work. But we believe that care and artistry are well worth the trouble. And so we will carry on, one squeegee and one screen and one print at a time.

DENIM Our denim is woven on true vintage looms here in the USA by Cone Mills. Using technology that is more than sixty years old, the slow production rate and lack of modernization give the fabric a unique character that cannot be duplicated on a modern weaving machine. All City Cut & Sew Items are available in Denim with a 25% upcharge. Cone Mills has been an industry giant in producing USA-made denim for over a hundred years. They are the last of the American made denim operations in existence, and they are closing the doors to their facility in the states by the end of 2017. It is with fond memories and heavy hearts that we bid Cone Mills and the long-held tradition of American-made denim farewell. City Cut & Sew will continue to offer denim after the stock of selvage denim is depleted. With the closing of Cone Mills, our denim with no longer be made in the USA. We will not abandon the pursuit of quality and integrity in our materials as we move to an alternate vendor for denim.
