OUR HISTORY
The Nunawading Basketball Centre stands as a landmark in Australian basketball history. The Nunawading Spectres were a foundation member of the NBL in 1979, changing their name to Eastside Spectres in 1987. They remained in the league for 12 years before merging with the South Melbourne Saints to create South East Melbourne Magic. Through a merger in 1981, the Nunawading Spectres joined the WNBL and became the most successful team in WNBL history, winning 6 titles.
In 1990, with the Eastside Spectres still a championship contender in the NBL, a Nunawading Spectres men's team re-emerged in the form of a South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) franchise. In 1992, the Spectres women joined the men's team in the SEABL after withdrawing from the WNBL. Following the 2019 demise of the SEABL, the Spectres joined the NBL1.

The future of Nunawading Basketball is incredibly bright as we enter what will arguably be the most exciting period in our storied history. The $100m+, 11-court redevelopment of the Nunawading Basketball Centre is coming to a head following the endorsement of the East Burwood Reserve Masterplan and commitment to a significant funding contribution by Whitehorse Council. Nunawading Basketball continues to explore and advocate for more courts across the local area to meet the demands of the community now and into the future. We are the largest Association in the country and continue to ride the wave of Australia’s fastest growing sport by growing above the national average. As a community we will be introducing a wider range of products and services to our members and the general public through greater integration of inclusive opportunities, non-basketball programs and facility uses.
