ACADEMIC PROJECTS
// Strappo Urbano Atelier di progettazione Peter Zumthor, Mendrisio, Switzerland 2007. The Klybeckquai in Basel is the only river harbour in Switzerland. It lies near the border with France and Germany. Its logistics determined a rupture with the urban tissue, giving place to an area with a peculiar identity, though fragmented, degraded and outcast. To connect the city’s morphology with the harbour, a new and large public square is created. A line of independent, outstanding and well positioned buildings meant for a variety of purposes are the leading actors in this new urban stage and work as a filter to the river bank, which ends with a green river path keeping track with the old routes linking to the city centre. Preserving some of the existing industrial buildings the “Urban Strappo” works as a synthesis, an urban gesture which organizes the existing fragmentation with one and only feature, creating new possibilities.

// Sport Center and public Square Atelier di progettazione Peter Zumthor, Mendrisio, Switzerland 2007. Stretching along 245 meters, this concrete warehouse is the core of the Basel Industrial harbor activity, crossed by road and railway, runs through the harbor until it reaches the river. The Project is meant to reuse this huge roof. It’s footprint is divided in two different parts separated by a road and railway. In the eastern part lies the Sport Centre which unfolds in three levels: First one, an underground plan featuring an indoor gymnasium, spa, swimming pool and squash. All of them are connected internally and available through a public pathway, accesseble thru the surrounding streets. Going up from that pathway we access the top platforms where the tennis, basketball, and volley courts are situated along with a skatepark, these match the second level of activities. The third level it’s a jogging track it rises twelve meters above ground and is available through a ramp or one of the stairway towers strategically standing along the complex. On the west side a large public square, a multifunctional space meant for entertainment as well as public transportation interface, establishes a strong connection both with the water and the surrounding space. It’s equipped with several facilities, such as a dock for maritime sports (benefiting from the existing cranes), small shops and a forefront with restaurants by the water and a pedestrian walk.

// Campo das Cebolas Project development of an International public Contest / 1st prize. In October 2012, development of the contest project for the requalification of the riverfront area of Campo das Cebolas in Lisbon, Portugal. The project focused on the creation of a comfortable urban area, a square which by its own characteristics contrasts with the neighbouring Terreiro do Paรงo. It builds through the unevenness of the existing surface creating a soft gradient leading to its inner area and a stone amphitheater. Under a crown cover of pine trees, the square turns itself over the slope facing the Cathedral suggesting the place and geometry of the old Pier Ver-o-Peso and restoring the area to become once again the stage of city life.

// Minunno’s apartment Renovation / Pinto Ferriera St., Lisbon Located in an old building in the BelÊm neighbourhood, this small ground floor apartment with a garden was previously vacant and decaying. Sectioned into small rooms it had very low light conditions. To turn it into a better living space and create a wider environment full of warmth and light it became necessary to make some strategic demolitions, to open new spans and substitute all infrastructures. In order to keep the charm of its original features, it was favored the use of preexisting materials, recovered woodwork and applied a brand new plank floor. The renovation work happened between July 2011 and February 2012, it comprised conception, project development, contract arrangements and construction work surveying (living area 75 m2, outdoor area 40 m2).

// Apartment in Alvalade Renovation / Guilherme Faria St., Lisbon This 60 m2 ground floor apartment, in need of major repairs and new infrastructures, suffered a complete renovation from July 2011 to February 2012. This small flat located in a traditional neighbourhood had no access to its 40 m2 share of the garden, its best asset. Therefore it was fully reorganized in order to enable the way out into to the garden. The sunroom was turned into the kitchen and the former kitchen space became a dining area (with a wall to wall storage cabinet) open to the living room. A wood deck assures now a smooth transition into the garden from both one of the bedrooms or the kitchen. It comprised conception, project development, contract arrangements and construction work surveying.
