Check out the beaches South Beach, Evanston, IL South Sheridan Rd.

One of Northwesternʼs best features is the versatility of its location! Not only do we have a beautiful campus, a great city nearby, but we also have beaches! With surprisingly fine sand, South Beach offers visitors a great place to unwind for a while. You can play beach volleyball, rent a sailboat, or even take a nap in the sun! The beach is available to the public and is open from 8am until sunset.

Take a trip to Bahaʼi Baha’i Temple 100 Linden Avenue (847) 853-2300 Wilmette, IL 60091

The Bahaʼi Temple may be one of the most beautiful buildings in the entire area. This structural beauty, surrounded by lush gardens, is only one of seven Bahaʼi temples in the world. If you would like to explore the inside, the visitorʼs center is open daily from 10:00 a.m-5 p.m. and the auditorium upstairs is open daily from 6:00 a.m-10 p.m.

Go see the Rock The Block Museum of Art 40 Arts Circle Drive (847) 491-4000 Evanston, IL 60201

The Chicago area is renowned for its museums, and the Block Museum of Art, located on campus, is no exception. This glass and limestone structure includes several temporary galleries as well as the Theo Leffman Gallery. Block Cinema, located on the main floor, screens experimental and classic films throughout the year.

On campus between University Hall, Kresge Hall, and Harris Hall

At Northwestern, “the Rock” represents an age-old tradition. It sits between Harris and University Hall, and was first painted as a prank, then as an accepted avenue of free expression. In order to claim painting rights, students must guard it for 24 hours straight. It has displayed advertisements for student groups, birthday wishes, and even marriage proposals!

Visit the Grosse Point Lighthouse 2601 Sheridan Road (847) 328-6961 Evanston, IL

Constructed in 1873, the Grosse Point Lighthouse is one of the most interesting landmarks in Evanston. You are welcome to walk the grounds, containing serene wildflower and butterfly gardens. The Lighthouse offers free tours in addition to tours of the Keeperʼs Quarters Museum and a chance to climb up the 141 steps to the top of the light tower (ages 8+) for just $6 for adults and $3 for children. This is often considered to be the symbol of the city of Evanston!

See the house from “Home Alone” 681 Lincoln Avenue Winnetka, IL 60093

One of the most memorable movie scenes is of MacCauley Caulkin with both hands on his face, screaming “Ahhh!” Take a short 15 minute drive to the suburb of Winnetka, just north of Evanston, where you can see the house filmed in “Home Alone!”

Stick your feet in the water The Lakefill, on campus

The Lakefill is a must see! This lake contained within campus not only serves as means for temperature control, but is also the site of many student pick-up sports games, naps, study sessions, camp fires, and Dillo Day!

Take a walk through the Shakespeare Garden On campus behind the Technological Institute and Dearborn Observatory

Set aside from the rest of campus, this tribute to The Bard offers sweet respite to all who need it. The garden sprung forth in 1915 when the Drama League of America, gathered several commemorative ideas to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Every plant in the garden was either mentioned in Shakespeareʼs plays or commonly grown in Tudor England. Tucked away behind the Technological Institute, the Shakespeare Garden has always allowed students to trade the hustle and bustle of student life for quiet reflection. For, as Shakespeare himself would say, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”

Get a “chicago-style” hot dog D&D Finer Foods 825 Noyes Street (847) 475-4344 Evanston, IL 60201

Chicago is known for a variety of cuisines, but you cannot leave without trying a famous Chicago-style hot dog!
