“Anima Sana In Corpore Sano” Asics is very much about the science and what makes a runner be better, but that doesn’t mean that the company—founded in 1949 by sportswear pioneer Kihachiro Onitsuka—doesn’t have a rich history.

2

ASICS continues to be a the forefront of the performance sports market and is undisputedly the leading running shoe brand for enthusiasts and professional athletes alike. Whether at professional sporting events, the Olympics or on a casual run in the park, ASICS is the true runner’s choice, providing comfort, support and a superior ride. The recent 10-year anniversaries of its two leading, award-winning shoes, the GEL-NIMBUS and GEL-KAYANO, demonstrate the longevity and affection of the brand in the eyes of sports people across the globe.

In the 70’s ASICS committed to designing footwear specifically for women. This historic improvement in the fit of women’s shoes attracted worldclass female athletes to compete wearing ASICS.

The Gel-Lyte line evolved into a lightweight performance running series with considerable style. Sleeker and more form fitting, the model fell in line with designs of the time featuring a sock-like neoprene slip-on core. This mono-tongue system was a trending technological advancement in the early nineties, keeping a supportive grasp on the mid-foot and ankle of runners. That midsole is a

2000s

ASICS introduced a number of high-tech innovations in the 90’s and established itself as a technological leader in the industry with innovations such as DuoSole, AHAR Heel Plug, Trusstic System, Wet Grip Rubber, RhynoSkin and DuoMax. In 1994 ASICS introduced the iconic GEL-KAYANO running shoe, setting the industry benchmark for shoes in this class.

1980s

2007 saw the passing of Mr. Onitsuka, the man who started ASICS. Those now charged with building on his success in both performance and lifestyle strive to live by his maxim: to create shoes that meet the needs of the modern athlete, helping improve performance, enhancing comfort and preventing injury.

Today

In 1950 the company then became known as Onitsuka Tiger and celebrated its first major sporting success the following year, with the winner of the Boston Marathon wearing Onitsuka Tiger shoes.

The introduction of the ASICS GEL cushioning system revolutionized the footwear industry. This unique cushioning system introduced the ability to absorb shock by dissipating vertical impact and dispersing it into a horizontal plane. Still utilized today, the ASICS GEL cushioning system is found throughout the footwear line.

1990s

ASICS Corporation was born in 1977 when Onitsuka Tiger merged with GTO Sports Nets & Sportswear. The acronym ASICS, “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano”, meaning “A Sound Mind In A Sound Body” was chosen as the name to promote the philosophy that sport is the best way to create a healthy and happy lifestyle.

1970s

1949

Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka founded the forerunner of the ASICS brand, Onitsuka Co. Ltd., in Kobe, Japan. He started by making basketball shoes to meet the needs of Japan’s rising young basketball stars. The first shoes featured a recessed sole design, which mimicked the action of an octopus’ suction cup.

GEL LYTE III 4

Splashed with flashy color, the ASICSÂŽ GEL-Lyte III are casual shoe sports the style of an old-school trainer in a streetready design. Suede and synthetic upper with synthetic lining.

The most immediately recognizable aspect of the Asics Gel Lyte III is the unorthodox split tongue set up.

It included features such as a speed lacing system, a triple-density compression molded midsole that has excellent rear foot shock absorption and a special split-tongue design to reduce tongue movement.

Originally released in 1991, the ASICS Gel Lyte III sports an unmistakable early90s tech runner vibe with a twist. Having originally been purposebuilt as a performance piece, the Gel Lyte III really had its come up when it was revived from the ASICS archive for a collaboration release with Amsterdam’s Patta crew.

The Heel Counter

Sockliner The sockliner (also called insole) is the first layer of soft foam which your foot rests on inside the running shoe. ASICS has developed sockliners made of foam which offer cushioning and make sure your foot fits comfortably inside the shoe.

The heel counter is the internal plastic structure of the shoe which wraps around the heel of your foot. It holds the heel in position during the movements of running.

Cushioning materials are often added to the heel and forefoot of running shoes to help attenuate the landing shock and loading forces experienced by the body while running.

Midsole

Split Tongue

The midsole is a layer of spongy material between the outsole and the upper. ASICS running shoes use Solyte and SpEVA as midsole materials. These cushioning materials combine bounce and durability.

The tongue is a separate strip on the upper. It makes it easier to put your shoes on and take them off. It also prevents the laces from rubbing against the instep of your foot. This shoe has a a special split-tongue design to reduce tongue movement.

Outsole

Eyelet The eyelets are the holes the shoelaces pass through. The eyelets of a running shoe should be large enough and smooth enough so you can easily and quickly adjust your laces.

Gel Cushioning

Heel Collar

The heel collar forms the top of the shoe, supporting the heel and Achilles tendon. The collar prevents the foot from slipping inside the shoe and makes it more stable to run in.

The outsole makes up the base of the running shoe. ASICS scientists have developed AHAR+ as the perfect outer sole material. It has great cushioning and grip qualities on a range of surfaces, wet or dry.

Salmon Toe Several years in the making, the Ronnie Fieg x ASICS GEL Lyte III “Salmon Toe” is the highly sought after Asics sneaker of all time. Once thought to be a scrapped sample (and resurrected via online petition), the shoe features a predominantly navy blue upper with white Arch branding and a salmon pink toebox. High grade nubuck, leather and pigskin are some of the materials used for the shoe’s construction. The release came in an exclusive all-wooden box produced and engraved by Good Wood NYC, along with a collaborative T-shirt and wooden dog tags. A total of 72 pairs was released, with 40 of those being individually numbered collector sets priced at $200 USD and 32 pairs being be sold at a price of 130 USD without the box.

SELVEDGE DENIM Selvedge denim represents the brown room in Kith’s SoHo flagship store that is made of original 1950 bricks, 150 year old wood and American steel. That room, along with the desire to be an indispensable part of American style, was the inspiration behind the Ronnie Fieg x ASICS Gel Lyte III “Selvedge Denim”. An American scheme of red and white leather with navy denim helps create a timeless runner.

No material depicts America quite like the denim that engulfs the upper of the sneaker. The classic material is offset with subtle hits of red, white leather branding, and white and navy laces. The iconic Asics strips are done up in white and red leather and carry a heavy resemblance to the selvedge details that we fawn over on our favorite pairs of jeans.

teal dragon This exclusive global re-issue features the same stunning colors and construction that made the original release an instant classic. The design focuses on a vibrant teal color in a variety of textures – soft suede, smooth nubuck, and perforated nubuck – along with eye-catching red dragon accents. Reflective 3M details on the toe and asymmetric netting add even more flair to the classic running silhouette. The “Teal Dragon” represents a special milestone for BAIT, as it is the first Asics release that our design team worked on – before BAIT was officially established. It deviates slightly from the formula that got him to this point with the Japanese running specialists, but one that like the ‘Salmon Toes’, also will see 40 of its limited edition run boxed in laser-cut wooden luxury.

FLAMINGO What started off as a 1-of-1 sample back in 2009 has evolved into what you see here today. After tweaking the color concept for the past few years, Ronnie Fieg finally present the Ronnie Fieg x ASICS “Flamingo Gel Lyte III. After a number of trials later, the ash grey nubuck that covers the apron and quarter was chosen to represent the color of flamingos before they turn pink. An ash grey nubuck upper plays off the original color of the tropical bird, with grey mesh of the same shade taking to the toe box. A two-tone outsole bares salmon and blue hints, backed by branding and lining in corresponding colors. Due to the limited number released, this shoe is highly sought after for its bright color way and good use of materials.

three lies Based on an iconic piece of Boston history, Concepts’ take on the popular Asics Gel Lyte III model is one of the most literal translations of inspiration to end product that you’ll ever see. The colors practically blocked themselves, but the challenge of nailing the materials and actual color hues just right required the kind of tasteful finesse that the Boston boutique has become well known for.

The “Three Lies” are truly a sight to behold. They are comprised of a premium suede and preforated leather upper. Concepts took it to a whole other level on the color blocking, taking palettes of navy, teal, and a beautiful gold toe box, all sitting atop a crispy speckled midsole. rivington club ALIFE whipped up two Asics Gel Lyte III pairs back in 2008 that featured subtle nods to some Nike classics. There was a grey based “Pigeon” that referenced LES neighbor Jeff Staple and then this “Curry” that borrowed its look from an inline Air Max 1. While they were designed sometime back, they finally made it to the public in June 2008. This makes this pack an item that was longed for by the all Asics sneakerheads. This shoe is kept fairly simple with the two colorways one in a curry, white and blue and one in grey and red. The pack consists of a curry/white colorway and a grey colorway.
