BKA SPORTS ARCHITECTURE

About “Sports Architecture We believe that creativity and innovation is born from a culture of people. In this global environment, we are committed to design that reflects the diversity of the communities and clients we serve. Sports architecture performs as social platform in the cities. It can be a landmark inspires both cities and citizens. As culture changes in an ecological way and sustainable understanding, the next generation of entertainment and sport facilities will be much more integrated. When thinking about a new facility about sports, the design should be informed by several factors including the potential site, context, climate and most importantly; culture. Considering these different parameters, we start to create opportunities for solutions and begin to define the character of a sports building on the way to arriving at the final concept. In my experience, a shared, strong concept always makes a project more deliverable and enjoyable.

BAHADIR KUL FOUNDER OF BKA M.ARCHITECT

Approach Today’s cities make it impossible to have contact with nature and experience natural sites in dwellers’ dailylives due to endless urban transformations and acccelareted pace of living. It is fundemantally necessary to preserve and prosper urban spaces that still maintain some of the irnatural qualities in order to meet dwellers’ innate needs for social and recreational activites. Gaziosmanpasa Municipality has been subjected toone of the fastest development transitions in Istanbul Metropolitan Area. The site, which has been zoned for a sports and recreation area, is strategically located at an urban development stretch that will draw even more focus in future.

Context and Site The project is located at a sloped site on Kemal Seker Boulevard. Accourdingly the complex is situated along the topographical nature of the land. Stadium stands are oriented along the land’s grade, reclining towards North East part of the site. Therefore the complex is observed as integrated with the natural topography of theland. The spectators are comfortably able to enter the complex from the upper part where the building elevation meets the existing Girne Street that houses a majorinter-municipality bus station. Programs such as indoor and outdoor sports facilities and stadium stand were laidouttocreate a well integrated organization that works efficiently as a wholesports complex. On the opposite boulevard where the building stands 30 metres tall from the ground, remaining programs were laidout parallel to the street to create a facade in order to provide a prestigious attraction point with in the city.

The complex is covered under a roof that complements the design as a whole. This dynamic structure suits well to sports facility. The undulated folds on the roof structure animates the whole design while creating opportunities for entrance points where it’s needed and suitable with the design methodology. The existing grassland continues on the roof where it covers the stands, representing a merging behaviour between the complex and the surrounding nature. Otherpart of the roof where it declines along the existing topography consists of solar panels considering this section’s southern orientation. Evenmore, the upper part of the hill resides urban vertical wind tirbunes, there bycreating a viable and sustainable complex respectful to environmental factors.

Inconclusion, the contemporary design for the stadium complex will become an urban attraction. This complex will define a cultural, social, arctistic and dynamic space within the urban context fort the dwellers. The main objective is to involve the city dwellers not only as users but also as contributors and participators. The main ideological perspective is to focus on children and youth. Therefore it is the main purpose of this design to help facilitating a flourishing community around the complex which will take a major role in the city’s socialand urban context.

Main Design Idea

The project area that we like to call "the urban strip" stretches out between Ceyhan Blvd and Yesilirmak Blvd, prevailing a 1 kilometer long area of Seyhan Blvd with various vacant lots at both sides. Therefore the project requires to be evaluated at a master plan scale in order to make sure a full integration to the metropolitan area. These vacant lots on Seyhan Blvd. are surrounded by lots that consists of various primary and secondary education facilities, a farmers market area, existing mosques and a planned mosque, an urban park known as Sehitler Parkı and a facilities complex belonging to Kepez Municipality Sports Team. The fact that the region has already highly populated and still continues to draw population makes this 92.000 m2 project area immensely critical for the city's and the dwellers' future.

The fundamental approach for the urban planning project is to create a km long strip that is consistently rich with diversified experience and make sure this cultural enrichment spreads out homogenously at all directions towards the surrounding districts. First step to achieve this is to provide a safe, comfortable and pleasing walking paths along the whole boulevard. This walking paths are consistently surrounded by rest, retail and recreation areas that turns the strip into a chain of lively avenues. These areas have a green zone to create a buffer zone between the traffic and human circulation, ensuring the safety and comfort of pedestrians. These various avenues create different levels of access and privacy zones parallel to the boulevard, defining a new rhythm of life and civic experience full of urban features.

Context PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION

Existing buildings on the project site features a sports complex for Kepez Municipality, including an administration building, indoor and outdoor sports facilities and a 2.500 spectator stadium. Yet none of these are adequate for the current needs of the region. The sports facilities are to be renewed and expanded for higher capacity with a design approach that aims to create an urban focus area within the region. Rather than designing a stadium that only fills once every two weeks during a sports event, it is designed to be lively and active during all days of a week. The stadium spaces will consists of various retail shops at dense traffic facades and accommodate all needs of the sports team, ensuring that it will stay active from within and from outside. Therefore the sports facilities will bring a high positive impact on the cultural fabric of the district. In order to establish an active urban square and increase usage of retail CAR CIRCULATION

shops at the stadium facade, a canopy extending both sides of the boulevard is envisioned. This canopy, while defining an urban square, also provides better climate for many people approaching the stadium and regulates the vehicle traffic flow on the boulevard while people are accessing from the surrounding recreation and parking areas. The km long boulevard possesses traditional market strips and retail streets as it leads people to the stadium from the major crossing boulevards. At both of these ends there is iconic building in order to guide people's attention towards the center of the boulevard. While one side houses a hotel, the other side houses the Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır Research center, across the street from the planned mosque. These two new buildings are well integrated with the existing buildings around site, considering their location and program. As one travels from the ends towards the inner part, there is a double strip of modular units for various retail opportunities. These units create a retail facade parallel to the

boulevard, as well as a inner courtyard like street like a traditional bazaar.

The facades and units are arranged with features directly taken from Antalya's Kaleiçi (inner castle) districts retail shops. These work from both facades, from courtyard and from street, as the Kaleiçi shops, creating a harmony with the traditional life style and social habits of local. This design approach creates economic and cultural efficiency. Units are arranged with careful consideration of the sun direction, making sure that retail facades stay at shade during the hotter hours of the day. Inner square for green courtyards, shaded rest areas, void units to create porches and house small retail benches (common in Turkey) are scattered along the retail zones to enrich the experience which will bring economic and civic values to the district and surrounding neighborhoods. All units at the retail zone have a shallow water pool around the perimeter of a multiple unit blocks. Retail units are accessed by crossing this two step pools. Project site is located at hot climate zone which makes it very uncomfortable to be active at outdoors during hot summer months. These water pool provide a huge improvement for the passive climatization of the outdoor spaces. Retail facades are also equipped with folding shades that also improves the aesthetics of the shops.
