history.
A quick look into the Australia sea-level history, it is dated that the Queensland coastline was located much further east and was 125m lower that the current sealevel. With time, the rise of sea-levels and the variation of movements in the ocean, the current Gold Coast area was submerged by approximately 1.5 to 2 meters.

The Spit origins dates back all the way between 1897 to 1898. Due to a series of gales and high seas, a narrow stretch of land called Jumpinnpin broke through Stradbroke Island. Following this event, tidal action eroded the sand from the southern tip of South Stradbroke resulting in the loss of the surveyed township of Moondarewa by the 1940s. In conjunction to all that’s happening, a low sand spit developed to the north of Main Beach Point creating a permanent sand isthmus that continued to edge across the mouth of the Nerang River. This was ultimately stopped following the construction of the Gold Coast Seaway in 1987. As The Spit developed into a permanent landform, this leads to a demand for private leasehold title of land and application for dredging rights for mineral sands. As of today, The Spit has a uniquely identifiable built landscape also known as the Glitter Strip.

context & analysis.
The Gold Coast sand originated from the Clarence River in New South Wales where granite rocks were transported downstream to the ocean. Though this changed 12,000 years ago when the sand is being delivered from eroding beach ridges along Brunswick Heads. Due to the constant movements of fine sand along the Gold Coast’s coastline, this created a challenge to the coastal lifestyle from erosion and storm events. In order to prevent such events from happening, the city of Gold Coast needs to ensure that there is enough sand on their beaches and the dunes are revegetated.
15.
T̀o combat this issue, Gold Coast has undertaken beach nourishment projects since the 1960s. The aim is to create a more resilient and to ensure a more useable beach for the community coastline by increasing the width of the beaches with additional sand. To mimic the natural coastal process, the sand is delivered to specific locations. This allows the sand to shift continuously in response to changing waves and water levels.
2009
With persistent maintenance and everchanging technology, the effort the city placed did not go to waste. Based on the data that was obtain, within 5 years, the city managed to extend the beach coastline by quite a bit.
