Indonesian Folklore
The Origin of Surabaya Long long time ago, there lived a shark called Sura and a crocodile called Buaya. They always fought each other for food. Both were equal in terms of strength and brains. And they were indeed ferocious and voracious. They fought too often that no one had won or lost. Finally they made a deal. “I am tired of fighting all the time Buaya” said Sura, the shark. “Me too, Sura. What are we supposed to do now so we stop fighting each other?” asked Buaya. The shark, Sura got an idea to stop the fight,so quickly that he explained it right away to Buaya. “In order to stop our fighting, we should split the region into two. I have full authority in the deep water and have to find my prey in the water. While you get the land and your prey must be from inland. The border will between the land and the water, we decide that it should be here, the place where the sea water rise when the tide comes!” “Okay, I agree with your idea!” said Buaya. With the split of the region, there was no fighting between Sura and Buaya. Both have agreed to respect each other’s territory. One day Sura the shark secretly hunt for its prey in the river, it was so secretly done that Buaya wouldn’t find him. At first, it worked. But finally Buaya found out about Sura’s acts. Filled with anger because of the breach of the agreement, Buaya shouted to Sura “Hey Sura, why did you breach the agreement that we had made before? Why did you dare enter the river that is in my territory? Where is your territory?” asked Buaya. Not feeling guilty, Sura calmly said, “How can I breach the rule? This river has water in it, so it is part of my territory as well, isn’t it?” said Sura the shark. “What? The river is on the land, while your territory is in the sea, which means the river is my territory!” Buaya said angrily. “No, I never said that water means only sea water, but also river water” answered Sura the shark.

“No, I thought my points were clear, and I am right about this!” said Sura. You trick me but I am not stupid like you think” said Buaya angrily. “I don’t care if you stupid or smart, what matter is that either sea water or river water,it is still water. And it is my territory!” Sura insisted. If so then, you purposively lie to me? Then our agreement is off! Who has the greatest strength, he will be the only ruler!” said Buaya again. “Let’s fight then to prove
that!”

In this epic battle, Buaya got bitten by Sura the shark at his right butt. Since then, his tail always point to the left While Sura got bitten at his tail, fatal enough that the tail wasnearly cut off. Sura then retreated to the sea. Buaya was satisfied that he finally protected his territory. This battle between the shark Sura and Buaya is so memorable to people of the city of Surabaya. Because of that, the name of Surabaya will always be linked to the story. Cerita Rakyat Indonesia

I also applied to Master's degree program which known as KNB-Kemitraan Negeri Berkembang (Developing Countries Partnership Program) and i won it this year, so I came to the state university of Malang on my MA now. The duration of educational program actually lasts for three years ,first year for language course, the rest of two years for MA. But i started MA without doing the language course, because i have learned it last year on a different program. Talking about the very first impression when I came to Indonesia, then I would say it was truly pleasant and splendiferous. We were invited to many exciting program such conferences, concerts, and festival. I sing and play music as well, so I personally enjoy these kind of gatherings. NM: I see, it must be so busy in Malang and wow you have nice talent and did many activities too. Well in your opinion what do you think about Indonesian education system? Max: Education in Indonesia is progressing, as I can see that there are tremendous number of researchers and student pursuing degrees.
