Indonesian Folklore

A Faithful Tiger

In ancient times, there was a married couple in Tasikmalaya. Their lives were fairly peaceful and happy. One day, they found the fatherless tiger next to its mother. The tiger was kept by the couple. It was trained and treated like a family member. Apparently, the animal realized it. He became submissive to the married couple. The tiger grew up. He was intelligent and agile. The tiger was named "Si Loreng 1. The relationship of Loreng with the married couple was so close that he could understand the spoken words of the married couple. When he was given a command, it certainly obeyed and carry out the command pretty well. The married couple who worked as farmers got happier when their child was born; a baby boy who was healthy and fun. This was the happy moment they had been waiting for a long time. When they went to work in the fields, the baby was left at home. The husband and wife loved Loreng more as he could be trusted to maintain the safety of their children. On a sweltering afternoon, the farmer's wife went into the fields to send food to her husband. Seeing the arrival of his wife, the husband immediately stopped his work. He immediately went to his wife in the hut. There, the husband ate the food that was served by his wife. They had just finished eating and drinking when they suddenly heard Loreng roaring. Loreng was running helter skelter through the rice paddies and kept heading to the lake. Loreng was wagging his tail while brushing gently and rubbing his body to the married couple. "Kakang! See ...!" cried his wife. "Loreng’s mouth is covered in blood. Husband startled. Loreng's mouth was covered with fresh blood. 8

Indonesian Folklore "Loreng ...?" said the husband and wife. "You don’t have to pounce on my son. You killed my son” Si Loreng shook his head so that the blood splatters on the mouth. The husband was filled with anger. He immediately pulled out his machete and cut off the head of Loreng. Loreng, who did not suspect he was being attacked, had no time to dodge. The tiger was moaning in pain. He did not fight back. There was just a pair of eyes looking toward the couple with a full sense of curiosity. Because the animal had not died, the husband immediately swung his machete in rage up to three times, breaking the neck of Loreng apart from his body. The animal was killed in a pretty tragic way. "Kakang2! Let's go home!" They immediately ran to their house. In their home, they found their child still in the swing. The baby was sleeping soundly. They held the body of their son, rocked his body. And the baby was awake and smiling at the arrival of his parents. Both husband and wife were grateful that the baby survived and was still alive. Once satisfied, they look after his son and were glad for the safety of their child. Now they looked around, gazing circularly around the room. Their attention was focused on the spot about their child’s swing bottom. They got the carcass of a bloody big snake lying in the swing. Both husband and wife, realized that it was Loreng who had been the instrumental key that save the life of their child from the danger of the big snake attack. The husband and the wife were very sorry, especially since the husband had killed the beloved tiger in such a hurry. This was done because of the wrong assumption. Because of it, wrong guess in the Sundanese language is called “Nyalahan” 3. To remember the event, the married couple residence was then called "Penyalahan". Over time more and more people resided in Penyalahan until it became a crowded village. According to local beliefs from the village of Penyalahan, up until now; no weapon has worked to kill a tiger in there. This happens because in the village of Penyalahan, a tragic event has occurred that an innocent tiger was killed because of a wrong guess. (Translated by : Terjemah-in)

Note: 1. Loreng meaning “Stripes” in English 2. Kakang is a polite way to call a Husband in Sundanese 3. Nyalahan meaning "Blaming" in English 9

Cerita Rakyat Indonesia

Kesetiaan Seekor Harimau

Melihat kedatangan istrinya, sang suami segera menghentikan pekerjaannya. Ia segera menghampiri istrinya di gubuk. Disana si suami melahap makanan yang dihidangkan istrinya. Baru saja mereka selesai makan dan minum, tiba tiba mereka mendengar suara gerangan si loreng. Si loreng tampak lari pontang panting, melewati pematang sawah terus menuju ke gubuk. si loreng mengibas-ngibas ekornya dengan lembut sembari mengosok gosokan badannya kepada suami istri itu. "Kakang! lihat...!" teriak sang istri. "Mulut loreng penuh dengan darah. Sang suami tersentak kaget. Mulut si loreng memang berlumuran darah segar. 10

Cerita Rakyat Indonesia "Loreng...?" kata suami istri. 11

Well, I have been in Indonesia for almost three months now. I came to Indonesia on October 8th. It took me a day to reach the equatorial paradise of Indonesia from the Land of fire, Azerbaijan because there is no direct flight to Indonesia from Azerbaijan, yet. The first time I came to Indonesia in 2008, I got a scholarship (Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship-AICS program 2008). I lived in Yogyakarta for 3 months. During that time, I learnt bahasa, culture and arts. By the way, i was so tired after the long trip to come! But when I arrived to Indonesia I was very happy because I saw the face of people who had always been kind to me. It was very important to me to get a scholarship again. Because I'm graduated from the faculty of regional studies & international relations and my major was Indonesian studies at Azerbaijan University of Languages. We have a Indonesian studies center in our university and we always cooperate with the embassy of Indonesia in Azerbaijan and with the Indonesian government. We always attend all events which held by Indonesian embassy and celebrate all important days together. My impression was so great. Because I had an opportunity to see Indonesia again and even study a master's degree in one of the leading universities of Indonesia, UNPAD in Bandung. Indonesia is an amazing country with rich culture. Every region in Indonesia has its own culture. People are very kind and always want to help. They are kind to me. NM: What kind of events that are usually held by Indonesian Embassy? What are the

dif-

ferences between learning Indonesian culture and language and Azerbaijan? Many events. For example, during Independence Day of Indonesia, every year we celebrate it together, walking together in Baku and playing bowling together. They even organized Indonesian traditional dance classes for free. When Indonesian officials come to Baku they also use to visit Indonesian studies center in Azerbaijan University of Languages. I learned many things at this center about Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Indonesian language class, history, literature, geography, economy, policy, political system of Indonesia and so on. All of these classes were taught by prof. Habib Zarbaliyev and Laura Zarbaliyeva. When I graduate from UNPAD, I want also to teach all about Indonesia there. Every year, 10 students enter to Indonesian studies in Azerbaijan University of Languages and every year they can join scholarships which arranged by Indonesian government in all over Indonesia. They can learn Indonesian language and rich culture close to Indonesian people in there motherland.

NM: Very magnificent! They well-published about Indonesian things. Then have you ever learnt traditional dance? What kind of traditional dance do you like? Would you mind to tell about the Azerbaijan culture and does it close same to Indonesian culture or not? In 2008 I learned Javanese traditional dance and even play wayang and gamelan through Indonesian Arts and Culture Scholarship Program 2008. We performed it in Taman Budaya, Yogyakarta and this event was launched by TV Indonesia a, program named culture under the sky . Many local people and officials participated in this event, including Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Republic and Azerbaijani ambassador to Indonesia. I gained a certificate by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of Indonesia. Azerbaijan also has a rich culture. With the location between European and Asian cross roads Azerbaijan has its own rich culture which included Azerbaijani,Turkish, Islamic,Cucasian, Asian and European cultures in itself. There are a number of Azerbaijani dances, these folk dances of the Azerbaijani people are old and extremely melodious. It is performed at formal celebrations and the dancers wear festival clothes. Compared with Indonesian dances, Azerbaijani dances have a very fast rhythm, so the dancer must have inherent skill. As the Indonesian national dance, Azerbaijan’s national dance shows the characteristics of the Azerbaijani nation. These dances differ from other dances with its quick temp and optimism. And this talks about nation’s braveness. Like in Indonesia in Azerbaijan also the national clothes of Azerbaijan are well preserved within the national dances. NM : Wow Fantastic! Okay well talking about food and beverages. Have you tasted some traditional foods and beverages? I tasted some Indonesian foods because there are many foods types in every province of Indonesia,I like Nasi goreng,Bakso, which similar to Azerbaijan”Kofte”,sate which is similar to Azerbaijan “kebab”,sopbuntut which similar to Azerbaijani” bozbash” I like Indonesian beverages such as jus mangga, jus nanas, jus alpukat, jus melon,es kelapa muda,es campur and es cendol.

Of course each tribe has their own language and is free to use it everywhere and everytime. However, in Azerbaijan most people speak Azerbaijani as the official language, like Bahasa Indonesia. NM; Its cool,it will be good information about Azerbaijan to all readers.Anyway, you studying International Relationship, right? Do you want to be an ambassador or consulate?
