Indonesian Folklore
The Legend of Lake Toba A long time ago, in the Northern part of Sumatra, there lived a young farmer which is orphan. It has been said that this region is very dry. These youth lived off the land and caught fish. Until one day he went out to fish. He had already been out for half the day, but he failed to catch any fish. So he hurried home because it had gotten dark. However upon his return, he saw a large and beautiful fish, yellow-gold in colour. He caught the fish and he carried it home with him. When he got home, because he was very hungry he then wanted to prepare the fish, but because the fish was so beautiful, he thought better of it. He decided to look after it. He then put it in a container and fed it. The next day as usual, he went to farm the fields, and he didn’t come home until the middle of the day in order to have lunch. But there was a surprise when he got back to his house, there was already food waiting for him to eat. He was in shock! He then remembered the fish (he feared it would be stolen), so he hurried back to see the fish on his line from last night. The fish was still in its place. He thought for a while, someone must have done it all, because he was hungry he finally started avidly eating the food. This same thing happened over and over again. Every time he arrived home for a meal, food was always served. Until the young man put a strategy in place to peek at who was doing it all. The next day he began to carry out his plan. As usual, he left home, pretending he was going to the field. Then, he suddenly jumped into and hid in among the trees near his house. He waited for a long time but he had not yet seen smoke rising from the kitchen. He then decided on going home as he was quite tired from waiting for a long time. However, when he came out of hiding he began to see smoke rise from the kitchen. He slowly walked back towards the house to see who was causing the smoke. It surprised him when he saw who caused it. He saw a very beautiful woman who had long hair. He gently entered the room and caught hold of the woman. “Hi,” he said. “Who are you and where are you from?”

Indonesian Folklore The woman bowed silently, and began to shed tears. The young man rushed to see the fish but it was no longer in the container. “Where is the fish that was in the container?” He asked the lady. Once again the woman burst into tears, but the young man kept persisting. “I am the fish that you caught yesterday,” she finally replied. The young man was surprised; he felt he had upset her. After much thought the young man asked her to marry him. She was surprised, as he stood silently. She told him, “I want to be your wife, but with one condition.” “What is the condition?” he replied quickly. She said, “Someday, when our children are born and when they grow up; do not ever say that he/she is the son of a fish.” The young man agreed to this condition and vowed never to say it. They then got married. Day in and, they too have children. He was about 6 years. The boy was very stubborn and never listened to advice that was given to him. Then one day, his mother sent her son to deliver rice to the farm, where his father worked. The boy went to deliver the food to his father, but on the way, the boy got hungry. He opened the food which was wrapped for his father and immediately ate it. When he finished eating, he wrapped it back up and continued on his journey to his father’s workplace. Upon arrival at the farm he gave the packet to his father who was very pleased. While sitting down he immediately opened the package of rice from his trusted wife. The child’s father was surprised to see the content of the packet was only fish bones. The father asked his son, “My child, why is it that it is just merely fish bones?”. “Somewhere along the way I got hungry, so I ate it.” he replied. The father who was very hungry because he had worked from morning was emotional. Suddenly, he firmly slapped his son’s cheek and said, "you son are a child of a fish". The child started crying and ran home. Once home, the child asked about what his father had said. "Ma ... what dad said is it true, am I the child of a fish?"
Hearing the words of her son, the mother was very surprised. Her heart became very heavy and she had tears in her eyes, she said in his heart, "My husband has violated his oath! And now, I have to go back to where i belong."

Cerita Rakyat Indonesia
Anaknya pun menjawab, “Di perjalanan tadi perutku terasa lapar, jadi aku memakannya”. 11
