Director’s Message

Dear fellow alumni and friends, We had many wonderful 2017 moments. A highlight of 2017 was the second NUS Day of Service. We were very encouraged by the strong turnout of close to 2,000 volunteers comprising alumni, staff and students coming together on one special day to not only commemorate, but also to put into action NUS’ tradition of service. Working alongside the NUS community – whether it was planting trees, cooking in soup kitchens, picking up trash or taking seniors for a day out – we bonded knowing our efforts have benefited the wider community. I am delighted to share that the NUS Day of Service, which is an initiative mooted by alumni, will now be an annual event. The next Day of Service will be on 1 September 2018 (Saturday) and I hope that you will join us then. Through the accounts of many participants, both the Bukit Timah and Kent Ridge Homecomings continued to be successful, highly anticipated alumni events. These offered opportunities to reconnect with old friends and make new connections. At these events, we also commemorate special milestones and anniversaries – most notably, Law Faculty celebrated 60 years, which made Bukit Timah Homecoming all the more meaningful.

2

Thirsty Thursdays took on a new format. This highly popular networking event for our younger alumni segment featured expert guest speakers, which lent greatly to the discussions between participants. Our thought-leadership speaker series, U@live will take a pause after seven incredible years. Working closely with U@live Chairman and Moderator, Mr Viswa Sadasivan (Arts and Social Sciences ‘83), we will be back soon with an exciting new concept. On this note, my colleagues and I are developing new programmes and activities for alumni, including more talks and workshops, local film screenings, and even a travel series. We will keep you updated through our various communications channels, including in our quarterly magazine. Our alumni publications also carry exclusive alumni interviews and campus updates to keep you apprised about the many happenings and developments in NUS. Since January 2018, The AlumNUS magazine has gone digital in line with NUS’ sustainability efforts. January 2018 also marks a new chapter here at NUS. On behalf of all NUS alumni, we warmly welcome new NUS President Prof Tan Eng Chye (Science ’85) and Provost Prof Ho Teck Hua (Engineering ’85). Together we will give them our

NUS OAR ANNUAL REPORT 2017

fullest support to pursue our vision as a leading global university centred in Asia. On this note, I would like to thank former NUS President Prof Tan Chorh Chuan (Medicine ’83) as well as the Alumni Advisory Board for their bold vision and guidance on our alumni engagement strategies. On behalf of my colleagues in the Alumni Relations team, it is our greatest pleasure to work with our NUS leadership team, faculty, staff, students and most of all, our alumni to build an even stronger and dynamic alumni family. I sincerely thank all of you for your continued support and participation, and look forward to another great year ahead!
