Project Brief conCreate’s goal is rethinking community housing towards affordable, sustainable, and inclusive living. Using recycled concrete, an automated design process, and a user platform, conCreate encourages a relationship between community, architecture, and environment. Starting from concrete buildings used as quarries, conCreate resurrects all those building elements which would otherwise be wasted during the traditional demolition process. Reconstructing a new building is the mission of automated architecture, which conCreate adopts as part of its agenda. Despite the users not being a part of the design process of their community building, they are essential to the life of the building itself. Through the conCreate app, they are able to live sustainably and feel part of a community.

Circular Economy —Reclaiming Concrete Nearly 50.000 buildings are being demolished every year in the UK, most of them in the Greater London area, with a consequent abundance of free concrete. Concrete buildings slated to be demolished become our quarries, giving us the pieces with which to realise new design proposals. Aiming to reduce unnecessary disposal of concrete, conCreate developed the idea to cut and extract elements from old buildings.

Quarries —Catalogue of concrete buildings Starting from the reclaiming process of our material, we catalogued a series of concrete buildings, differentiated into three main families according to their structure. Our construction process, construction - on - reverse, is hence a reverse process. Starting from an existing building, we deconstruct it and re-use its elements in order to build a new one. With a computationally developed procedure, the deconstuction consists of creating a voxelgrid around the building and then differentiating the elements of the building according to their function.

On-site extraction From the cutting process, we obtain our library of raw materials, including any sort of element, whose structural features are known and recorded. These images demonstrate the process of existing cutting techniques based on our research.

08

09

Library of raw materials Building elements from our quarries were categorised according to their structural system. Their dimensions are scanned and recorded, resulting in a list of crowdsourced concrete elements These components are then transported to the factory, where they are scanned, cut and refined, before being prepared for post-tensioning, and catalogued based on their features.

Library of customised parts Customisation is part of this process; here is an example of an arch and its various assembly options. All the components now lose their native function, able to assume new and different ones. The example shows the process of customisation for ArchWall01, the combination of an arch and two columns, which is derived from different concrete parts.

Design procedure —Wave Function Collapse conCreate’s spaces are arranged computationally through the use of the Wave Function Collapse algorithm. Starting from tiles input with declared adjacencies, the algorithm allows us to procedurally generate our entire floorplan. These are our tiles corresponding to our 4x4m rooms.

tiles. Some possible couplings are depicted here, highlighting the connection type that they share. The primordial rule we set for the algorithm authorizes our tiles to connect through any sides where they carry the same color.

Each tile is associated with one or more colours per face, where neighboring tiles with adjacent faces that share at least one color can form a connection. WFC is a constraint-based algorithm which is able to create infinite combinations of

Program Massing This brings us to 3-dimensional voxels which are then further distinguished into private and shared spaces inside the community, arranged and connected through circulation.

MArch l conCreate

conCreate users rent their private space - that is, the ensuite bedroom - whilst sharing facilities and common areas. All non-essential spaces are accessible through the use of points - gained and spent inside

the community - encouraging a sustainable and very handson community lifestyle. Private rooms are permanent, while shared spaces are temporary in definition - adaptive to whichever activity they host.

12

13

conCreate Platform The app is a place where a user has control at their fingertips. Let’s break down how the app works in four simple steps. Upon logging in, members have access to the conCreate interface which then allows them to earn points. There are three ways to do so: energy efficiency, space evaluation and skills exchange. Information is then stored in the cloud where it tallies points for the members. Consequently, these points can be used for unlocking shared spaces, booking services and upgrading appliances and storage.

An Artifical Mountain promoting Bird Intelligence in Anthropocene world This is a condition set. Imagine a society where everyone has to consume bird nest. It means we need to create a huge amount of mountains in order to produce more habitats for swiftlets birds. The project would promote the positive aspects of animality - intelligences, ecological accord, and innocence - while preserving the enlightened aspects of humanity, scientific curiosity and technological innovation. Also, express the ideal of symbiosis between human and non-human organisms.

So it is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, their habitats for the benefit of humanity and earth’s biological diversity. The project is set in the near future where the temperature rises up to 40 degrees Celsius and the level of the water, because of that temperature, rises to 23 metres. Therefore, I provide an artificial island for human and non-human (birds) coexisting and have a living system provided through the use of algae and make the exterior space more inhabitable. Edible Bird Nest

Viking Cave —Swiftlet bird

The Intelligence of Swiftlets

It is in the northeast of Phi Phi Leh Island, Thailand. Viking cave got its name from the Viking ship cave drawings in the wall. Within the cave there are lots of ledges which are inhabited by thousands of birds called Swiftlets live on top of the 15 meter high ledges. These swiftlets produce Edible bird Nest.

Swiftlets are insectivorous birds, and are widely distributed.During the breeding season, both male and female swiftlets of the Aerodramus species collaborate to produce highly valuable edible bird’s nest (EBN) from saliva secretions generated from their salivary glands

BSc l Bird Embassy

It’s a gelatinous mixture. It’s believed to have near-magical properties, from curing cancer to helping children grow taller. The main ingredient? a partially dissolved feather of a swiftlet, a small bird native to Southeast Asia.

So while there are more bird nests today, they’re not much easier to come by and that’s why bird’s nest soup is still so pricey, selling for over a thousand baht a bowl at some restaurants. But the question on all of our minds was,

Until recently, the most common way of getting the nests was to harvesting them from the impressive height of the cave. Or in the most inaccessible place. It’s the high cost of these saliva nests that makes bird’s nest soup so expensive.

“Is it worth it?” Comparing to Gold which is timeless, priceless, valuable. It’s because of its rareness and its difficulty of producing. So is bird nest. It owns its value because of the condition in which remote location,

difficulty of collecting, and the beliefs of Chinese. More people could afford it. More people could access it. After observing the swiftlet habitat, it is challenging the imitation of caves environmental factors which responsive to the swiftlets behaviour and contribute to a lucrative aspect of its industry. Because it affects the productivity of its production. The conditions of the cave are replicated

is filtered and captured for photosynthetic operations; oxygen is produced and carbon dioxide adsorbed; more light results in more oxygen production and more screening potential; less light turns into less photosynthesis and more transparency.

A case of Tourist Ghetto, Khao San Road Urban Design, 2018

Khao san road —Inside-Out Structure of Traditional houses are still preserved. The facades are decorated programmatically. Buildings become sculpture and decorated shed where systems of space and structure are directly at the serviceof program, and ornament isapplied independently of them. BSc l A case of Tourist Ghetto

A relationship between the program and the facade of a building is prominent. By taking such terms an applying them to an analysis of building facades, an interesting relationship can be created between the marketing strategy desired and the way in which the facade represents such strategy.

The centre of tourists ghetto —Khao San Road The investigation of the collision of human behavior of ‘the centre of tourists ghetto’ in Khao San road explores the idea of capturing the representation of Thainess contamination. The intangible generalization of groups held in a manner that renders them largely, though not entirely, immune to counter evidence. In doing so, Ethnography powerfully shapes the perceptions of groups. The cognitive distortions promised a new world serve as a microcosm Visual Universe. Basically the way we experience Khaosan road is related to extreme Thai stereotype and cultures. It might set the scene itself to represent the promise of a new world. “To mimic a way of learning Thai culture; —Storytelling” Are we only subject to the circumstances we are in? At this point, Khao san road is the major activator which influences the area around; Banglumphu and the slum community. The tourism contamination spreads out. Both social structure and existing structure are evolving as a tourist attraction. Obviously, the traditional shophouses adapted into guesthouses, restaurants, pubs and commercial area putting up the LED signs and billboards as dressing up programmatically and structurally. The reasons behind this touristy place’s success; Thainess - the representation of Thai cultural symbols and stereotype. The unique experience intentionally made up for tourists such as famous Thai street food, Pad-thai, Northern mountain accessories or even clothes with elephant pattern on. The question is; How might we design experiences rather than spaces or structures that have a psychological effect on people?

Sense Fest The project challenges the very definition of architecture, encloses a socially interactive machine to awaken the passive subjects of mass culture to a new consciousness. In a sense, it is the realization of the long unfulfilled promise of a technologically informed architecture and the machine for a living of social condition in terms of time and space. Considering the programme in temporal terms, it is an entity that continues to change which allows multiple uses and an improvisational architecture of constant activity, in a continuous process of construction, dismantling and reassembly. The tourists could embark on a journey of creativity and sensibility perception development. Consequently, It becomes events. BSc l Sense Fest

The things themselves, the people, noises, sounds, air, colors, materials, textures, forms move to the feeling and the sense. People, highly sensitive and individual, are the products of sensitivities

themselves and interact with objects in a particular way. Atmosphere and mood inevitably come to mind as perceived it through our emotional sensibility. A form of perception that works incredibly quickly which we are capable of immediate appreciation of a spontaneous emotional response.

Rajasthan Architecture —Jodhpur, Rajasthan Very often, tradition is viewed in a superficial manner without understanding the essence of it and that is true with architecture also. Architectural experience is about creating memories, and often, in an attempt to insinuate traditional architecture that would give a lasting impression which ends up being kitschy and pastiche. The creation of what is effectively a decorative screen over a random array of functionally disposed openings does not do much for the view from some of the rooms but works superbly climatically and is an improvement on the traditional Jaali as it not only shades the window openings but also channels breezes into the rooms.

The project consists of four pavilions provided by hut-like roofs and circular walls made of painted concrete blocks to define rooms underneath, while pink coverings offer shade in the courtyard and at the sides of the structure.

The construction uses a modular system to be built and completed through the years, when funds will be available: with a project including four roofs, only three of them have been arranged till now. The structure is easy to assemble

and it’s able to increase the built surface reducing the costs.
