What is speech and language therapy? Paediatric speech and language therapy involves working with children aged 0 – 18 years to support and develop their speech, language and communication skills. We work together with you and your child to develop meaningful individual goals. By providing therapy that is effective, fun and motivating, children are more likely to willingly engage in activities and make lasting improvements. As children develop and grow, they may experience speech, language and communication difficulties. This can be
frustrating for the child and worrying for the family. Our speech and language therapists support families in understanding their child's needs, provide advice and create an individualised therapy programme to help them reach their full potential. Our speech and language therapists can relieve parents’ concerns by assessing your child’s skills and developing an individualised therapy programme.
Our aim is to enable your child to be able to communicate effectively with others to the best of their ability.
Our mission At SLT for Kids, our mission is to provide the highest quality of speech and language therapy to enhance children’s speech, language, voice, communication and feeding skills to their highest potential.

What are speech, language and communication needs? Children may find it difficult to understand or remember information, their speech may sound unclear or immature, they might talk in short simple sentences or have difficulty making and maintaining friendships.
Speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) is an umbrella term used to describe a person of any age who has difficulties with any aspect of speech, language or communication. SLCN can either occur on its own, for example, Developmental Language Disorder (previously called Specific Language Impairment – SLI), or be associated with a co-occurring condition, such as ASD, hearing impairment, learning difficulties, Downs Syndrome, cerebral palsy and so on.

What happens in the Initial assessment session? Before we can provide an effective intervention programme for your child it is important to gather information from parents/carers and upto-date levels of language and communication. This is completed during our initial assessment session. Some children may be referred to our service following NHS input. It is great to share this information however does not reduce the importance of your therapist completing an initial assessment. The initial assessment session allows the therapist to meet your child and family and discuss your concerns. During the session a detailed case history is taken in order to get the
most information about your child. This helps us to understand more about your child and their needs and supports decision making for therapy. The initial assessment session also allows for sharing of any reports/information from additional services your child may be accessing. We aim to work with all care providers for your child and believe an integrated approach to care leads to the best outcomes. Following the case history your child will then take part in assessments.
It is important to build a holistic picture of your child’s strengths as well as their areas to work on to support planning of treatment.

It is important to build a holistic picture of your child’s strengths as well as their areas to work on to support planning of treatment. When completing a communication profile for a child, our therapists will look at: attention and listening; interaction and social communication; understanding; use of language; vocabulary; speech sounds and fluency. The type of assessment completed will depend on the age of your child and the areas of
concern. The assessment with often contain a mixture of formal and informal tasks in order to gain a greater understanding of your child’s communication profile. For younger children, the session is play based, with language assessment happening without them even noticing. The initial session also allows the therapist to build rapport with your child and learn more about their likes and dislikes. Motivation is very important for successful speech and language therapy sessions and our therapists ensure that they have activities and rewards that are motivating for each individual child.
