10 Things You Can Do to Help a Teething Puppy

Your puppy’s baby teeth start to come in when he’s about 2 weeks old and take about 10 weeks to fully emerge. The baby teeth will then fall out, replaced by permanent teeth. During this time of teething, your puppy’s gums may be red, sore and swollen, prompting his reaction to chew. These 10 tips can help.

Give him toys he can chew Invest in one or two quality chew toys to quell your pup’s natural reaction to chew during teething. Make the chew toys even more enticing by applying a dab of peanut butter.

Keep confusion low Giving your puppy too many chew toy options can make him think it’s OK to chew just about anything. Also avoid toys that look like shoes or other items he shouldn’t be chewing.

Try an ice cube (or two) Ice cubes can encourage chewing while alleviating some of the teething pain and swelling. Put one or two in his food. You can also wet, twist and freeze a clean small towel on which your puppy can chew until it thaws out.

Massage his gums Sit with your puppy, supporting his chin with one hand and gently rubbing his upper and lower gums with the fingers on your other hand. Continue for several minutes.

Don’t (accidentally) encourage biting Teething is a nippy time, and you may inadvertently encourage nipping by waving your fingers in front of your pup’s face or tapping the side of his mouth.

Encourage non-contact play Playing games like tug-of-war and fetch give your puppy something to bite at besides your hands.

Teach touch without teething If your puppy nips every time you go to pet him, try feeding him small treats with one hand while petting him with the other.

Discourage nipping nicely When you do get nipped, don’t rant, rave or grab your puppy’s mouth. Simply exclaim “Ouch!” and walk away.

Use deterrents if needed If your home is becoming one big chew toy, try deterrents that leave a bitter or foul taste on items your puppy shouldn’t be chewing.

Keep him in tiptop shape Keep your puppy’s teething progress and overall development on track with a healthy diet that provides essential nutrients. NuVet Plus supplements do exactly that. Learn more by reading NuVet Plus reviews and NuVet reviews.
