DESPITE LOSS OF 23 SENIORS, NORTHWESTERN HAS PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE RETURNING IN 2009 Last year, Northwestern fielded one of its deepest teams in school history, and that depth paid off for the Wildcats who overcame a myriad of injuries to win nine regular-season games and reach the 2008 Valero Alamo Bowl. Despite graduating 23 players from last year’s squad, Northwestern has 48 returning letterwinners this year, which is one more than last year’s total. Last year’s mark (47) had been the most in 16 years at Northwestern. This year’s breakdown brendan smith includes 24 returning letterwinners on offense, 23 on defense and one on special teams. Interestingly, Northwestern only played two true freshmen in 2008, the fewest of any Big Ten program.

FOURTEEN STARTERS ARE BACK FOR 2009 Northwestern has 14 starters returning, including eight on the defensive side of the ball, where NU made huge strides a year ago. The Wildcats are led by team MVP and first-team All-Big Ten defensive end Corey Wootton, who put together a tremendous season in 2008. The imposing 6-foot-7, 270-pound end already has been named a 2009 Playboy preseason All-American and to the Lombardi Trophy and Lott Trophy Watch Lists for the upcoming season. Returning alongside Wootton this year are three other players who earned All-Big Ten recognition: cornerback

Sherrick McManis, as well as safeties Brad Phillips and Brendan Smith. Offensively, four of NU’s five returning starters are all linemen. The fifth is superback Josh Rooks, who leads a talented group of players at that position. NUMBER AND POSITION CHANGES Several returning players will be sporting new jersey numbers this year. Those players with new numbers are: running back Jeravin Matthews (#3), quarterback Dan Persa (#7), safety Hunter Bates (#7), wide receiver Demetrius Fields (#8), superback Drake Dunsmore (#9), safety Brian Peters (#10), linebacker Stone Pinckney (#31) and defensive lineman Cameron Joplin (#71). Matthews made the switch from wide receiver to running back in the offseason and Joplin was moved from superback to the defensive line late in the 2008 season. RISE AND SHINE For the third consecutive year, Northwestern will conduct its weekly practices (starting the week of Sept. 21) at 8:30 a.m. The Wildcats have held a majority of their practices since the spring of 2007 in the morning hours. ELITE COMPANY If senior safety Brendan Smith is elected a team captain this fall, he will become just the eighth player in Northwestern football history to serve as a twoyear captain. As a junior in 2008, Smith was one of four captains to help guide the ’Cats to their nine-win season. The last NU player to serve as a captain in multiple years was linebacker Barry Gardner in 1997 and ’98.

NEW FACES on the sidelines Northwestern suffered just one full-time coaching departure in the offseason after offensive line coach Bret Ingalls accepted a running backs coaching position with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints in January. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald then promoted Adam Cushing to offensive line coach and filled his lone staff vacancy by hiring Bob Heffner, most recently the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Lafayette College, as the Wildcats’ superbacks coach. Heffner brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience (NFL and college) to Evanston. “I had the opportunity to work with Bob when I was a graduate assistant at Maryland and am excited to add his experience and knowledge to our staff,” said Fitzgerald. “He is a great teacher who has worked with some tremendous coaches and programs during his career. Bob also brings a wealth of Northeast recruiting ties to our program and he will lead our recruiting efforts in that part of the country. He is just a great addition to our staff.” Northwestern also had to replace one of its graduate assistant coaches as it does each spring. Alan Wolking, a 2002 graduate of Ohio State and a football operations intern for the ’Cats in 2008, is the Wildcats’ new defensive graduate assistant.

season notes ANOTHER BUSY SUMMER FOR FITZ After being feted throughout the season and during the winter for his College Football Hall of Fame induction, Fitzgerald stayed busy this summer with a few more events, some of those related to his hall of fame honor. The most notable event took place July 17 and 18 in South Bend, Ind., at the College Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. In December, Fitzgerald and 14 other players and coaches were inducted into the pat fitzgerald with Hall. The summer cerarchie griffin emony took place at the College Hall of Fame and gave fans a variety of opportunities to meet and mingle with the hall-of-famers during a spectacular event. In May, Fitzgerald visited Chicago’s two MLB teams, singing the “stretch” at Wrigley Field on May 12 and then tossing the first pitch at U.S. Cellular Field on May 23. mike kafka WOOTTON BACK TO LEAD NU’S DEFENSIVE FRONT FOUR Northwestern’s new attackingstyle defense paid huge dividends with regards to negative plays in 2008 as well as stopping the run. For the year, Northwestern recorded 86 TFL’s (for a loss of 377 yards), which included a Big Ten-best 34 sacks. The Wildcats averaged 2.62 sacks per game, the 18th-best mark in the country. Defensive end Corey Wootton led the way with 16.0 TFL’s (10.0 sacks) and also helped the ’Cats set a single-season defensive rushing record, holding its foes to 126.4 yards per game and eclipsing the previous school mark, which was set during the Wildcats’ magical 1995 Rose Bowl season. Wootton had a great supporting cast up front and several of those players are back in 2009. Defensive tackle Corbin Bryant is back along with defensive end Vince Browne, who was named a second-team Freshman All-American by Sporting News and Rivals.com. Also returning are veteran tackles Adam Hahn and Marshall Thomas. With Wootton and Browne anchoring NU’s defensive end positions, coupled with rising backups

Kevin Watt and Quentin Williams, the Wildcats should tout one of the better defensive end groups in the country.

ONE OF THE NATION’S BEST SECONDARIES? How many secondaries are returning four starters, who each earned postseason recognition in 2008? Northwestern has both its cornerbacks (Sherrick McManis and Jordan Mabin) and safeties (Brad Phillips and Brendan Smith) returning in 2009, along with several key reserves (Brian Peters, Justan Vaughn, David Arnold, Mike Bolden) who logged some significant playing time last year. McManis, Phillips and Smith each earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors while Mabin was tabbed a Freshman All-American by several outlets. In 2008, Northwestern’s secondary helped the Wildcats rank 25th among the nation’s top teams in pass efficiency defense with a 111.8 rating. “CRAZY LEGS” KAFKA Senior quarterback Mike Kafka, who will replace C.J. Bachér as the Wildcats’ starting signal caller this year, made two starts for the injured Bachér a year ago. In his first 2008 start at Minnesota, all Kafka did was set a Big Ten single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback (217 yards on 27 carries) and finish with 360 yards of total offense as he guided the Wildcats to a memorable 24-17 win over the then-nationally ranked Gophers. He also tossed a pair of TD passes, including a 36-yarder to Jeremy Ebert on NU’s opening drive. While Kafka’s running skills are well-documented, it should be noted that he finished the year with a team-best 131.1 pass efficiency rating, which would have ranked him among the top 50 quarterbacks

2009 northwestern football • NUsports.com

nationally in that statistic. Kafka completed 32-of-46 passes (69.6%) for 330 yards. NEW NAMES SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE OFFENSE There was a great deal of attention given to the offensive side of the ball this spring as Northwestern began the task of replacing C.J. Bachér, a quarterback who totaled 7,319 career passing yards, Tyrell Sutton and Omar Conteh, two running backs that totaled a combined 4,617 career rushing yards, and Eric Peterman, Ross Lane and Rasheed Ward, three senior wide receivers who compiled a combined 5,350 career receiving yards. And don’t forget about Sutton’s 1,244 career receiving yards. On paper, that’s a hefty amount of offense to replace. The Wildcats, however, have some young upand-coming skill players who have been biding their time, waiting to make an impact on the program. Receivers Andrew Brewer, Jeremy Ebert, Sidney Stewart, Zeke Markshausen, Charles Brown, Carl Fisher, Kevin Frymire, Demetrius Fields, Lee Coleman and Martin Bayless are names that will continue to battle for starting positions this fall. At running back, Stephen Simmons leads a cast of players trying to replace the backfield staples of Sutton and Conteh the past four years. Simmons, along with converted running back Jeravin Matthews and redshirt freshman Alex Daniel, handled a majority of the carries during the spring. (Scott Concannon and Jacob Schmidt were injured.) At quarterback, Mike Kafka and Dan Persa enter the fall as the Wildcats’ respective number-one and-two signal callers. Northwestern also is expected to receive some major contributions at the superback position as Josh Rooks, Brendan Mitchell, Mark Woodsum and Drake Dunsmore, who missed all of 2008 with a knee injury, return. Don’t be surprised, in fact, if Dunsmore turns out to be one of the Wildcats’ top receivers in 2009. LOTS OF FAMILIAR FACES Helping Northwestern’s new skill players is a seasoned offensive line that features five players who have started nine or more career games. The roll
