2009-10 season notes FOUR STARTERS, 12 LETTERWINNERS RETURN Northwestern welcomes back 12 letterwinners from a season ago, including four starters. The Wildcats return 76.1 percent of their scoring and 86.4 percent of their rebounding. The 12 letterwinners returning tie the ’Cats with Michigan State for the highest total in the Big Ten. COBLE RETURNS FOR FINAL SEASON Through his first three seasons of play, forward Kevin Coble has already established himself as one of the top players in program history. Coble enters his final campaign ranked 14th in school history with 1,203 career points and has an outstanding chance of finishing among the top three scorers all-time at Northwestern. He became the first NU player to lead the team in both scoring and rebounding as a freshman and has done the same in each of the last two seasons as well. Coble was a consensus secondteam All-Big Ten pick in 2008-09. He has posted the highest scoring game by a Big Ten player each of the last two seasons, posting 37 points against Indiana Feb. 23, 2008 and 31 in a win at eventual national runner-up Michigan State Jan. 21, 2009. INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE Sophomores John Shurna and Kyle Rowley each gained valuable experience playing internationally during the summer. Shurna was a key contributor on the United States’ team which captured the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand. The U.S. went a perfect 9-0 with Shurna contributing 6.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Rowley was the youngest member of the national team of his native Trinidad and Tobago. The squad competed at the 20thannual Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Men’s Basketball Championships in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

THREE NEWCOMERS JOIN THE MIX Three freshmen join the Wildcats for the 2009-10 season. Drew Crawford, a guard/forward, joins NU following a standout senior season at nearby Naperville Central High where he was named a firstteam all-state selection. Southpaw Alex Marcotullio comes to Evanston as a sharp-shooter who was considered one of the top guards in the state of Michigan at De La Salle High in suburban Detroit. Walk-on Reggie Hearn has also joined the Wildcats after helping Fort Wayne Snider to an Indiana Class 4A state runner-up finish as a senior. TOUGH SCHEDULE AWAITS WILDCATS The ’Cats face a challenging slate in 2009-10, playing 18 of their 31 regular-season games against teams that participated in postseason play a year ago. Among the Wildcats’ non-conference opponents are traditional powers Notre Dame, Butler, North Carolina State and Stanford, as well as a season-opening matchup against local foe Northern Illinois. Northwestern’s Big Ten slate should prove to be quite the challenge as the Wildcats’ first 10 games are being played against teams that reached the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten has been picked as top league in the country by many preseason prognosticators. In the 18-game conference schedule, NU will not host Ohio State or travel to Purdue this season. HOME SWEET HOME After setting a program best with 13 home wins in 2008-09, the Wildcats will have plenty more opportunities to play at the friendly confines of Welsh-Ryan Arena this season. Northwestern is set to play a school-record 19 regular-season home games during the 2009-10 campaign. NU’s lone nonconference road game is at N.C. State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

oming off a campaign in which the team reached the National Invitation Tournament and came close to an NCAA Tournament berth, Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody returns a veteran group to the court for the 2009-10 season. Carmody isn’t one to rest on his laurels, though, and realizes the successes of a year ago don’t guarantee anything for the future. “I don’t look at this as a continuation of last year because every year, even if it’s the exact same personnel, guys change,” Carmody said. “They grow up, they get better, they get worse or they stagnate. I try to go into it with an open mind and see what the best combination of guys is that’s going to help us win. Having said that, it’s nice to have a veteran team.” That veteran group includes four starters from 2008-09 and 12 letterwinners overall which matches Michigan State as the most of any team in the Big Ten Conference. The one major hole in the lineup the Wildcats must replace is in the form of guard Craig Moore who not only graduated ranked first in school history in 3-point baskets and was a third-team AllBig Ten pick a year ago, he was also the squad’s emotional leader. “The guys who are really going to have to step up are the guys who played last year,” said Carmody. “We lost Craig Moore and I think we can replace his scoring, but he was a competitor who cared as much as anyone. Now we need to find out who is going to show that kind of leadership and competitiveness that you need to be successful in this conference.” BACKCOURT Leading the offensive charge for the third consecutive season will be junior point guard Michael Thompson. One of the truly underrated players in the conference, Thompson posted an impressive 2.19 assist-to-turnover ratio and also ranked third in the Big Ten with a .431 3-point field goal percentage while averaging 9.9 points per game. Carmody looks for Thompson to assume control of the offense while having a big season. “Michael has done better in his first two years than I thought he would do,” Carmody said. “He’s exceeded my expectations so far, but knowing him, I know that’s not enough for him. He has run the team with Craig in the past, but now he’s going to have to take over everything. He’s got to be the guy. He also can’t take five or six shots in a game. He’s going to have to take 10, 12 or 14 shots. He can get by his man, he finishes off things, he’s got a good in-between game and he was our best 3-point shooter last year percentage-wise. He worked his tail off this summer. He’s a gym rat and I think he’s going to have a terrific year.” Senior Jeremy Nash has an opportunity to fill Moore’s spot in the

starting lineup. Known around the Big Ten as a tenacious defender off the bench, Nash has exhibited consistent improvement in his all-around game which Carmody hopes will translate him into becoming someone who is responsible for winning games this season. “Jeremy could have started for us last year, but he had that energy that was a little better coming off the bench,” said Carmody. “Whether he starts or not, we’ll see, but he’s going to get an opportunity. I want him to be more than just an energy guy this year. He’s got to be consistently good, and then half of those games he makes you win. He’s capable of doing that.” Sophomore Nick Fruendt saw limited action during his initial season in a Wildcat uniform. However, he has shown a knack for scoring and if he continues to adapt to the college game, he could compete for quality minutes. “Nick has gotten stronger and more aggressive,” Carmody said. “He worked very hard in the spring with Coach (Mitch) Henderson. I had him work with Michael Thompson to show him what it means to go to work. He was behind a guy last year in Craig Moore who was playing the majority of the minutes. Nick seems to have improved. He has an assortment of shots and can put the ball in the basket. He needs to be able to help us win by doing the little things as well.” NU’s recruiting class included a pair of guards who have already shown the potential to step in and contribute immediately. Southpaw sharp-shooter Alex Marcotullio has already displayed a great knowledge of the game that Carmody compares favorably to another recent Wildcat who made a few shots in his day. “Alex reminds me of Craig in that he’s like a point guard from the neck up,” said Carmody. “He’s a competitor and he understands things. He can really shoot the ball. Like any freshman, the question will be is there going to be a big transition because of the strength, speed and intensity of Big Ten basketball? If he’s tough enough and strong enough and can sustain it, he’s going to be a good player for us.” In Carmody’s eyes, the same holds true for Drew Crawford. A native of nearby Naperville, the athletic wing has shown that he can do a little bit of everything. His versatility could prove to be a major asset to the ’Cats. “Drew flew under the radar a little bit in high school and was able to get by on his athleticism sometimes,” Carmody said. “He had a terrific summer, got a lot stronger and is shooting the ball well. He has the potential to be a stat sheet stuffer. I think he’s a pretty good all-around player. The same that’s true for Alex is true for Drew. Is it going to take a year to get used to the college game or can you slide right in like Kevin Coble, Michael Thompson and Craig Moore did?” FRONTCOURT Kevin Coble is the type of player where around the Big Ten, numerous people are quizzically asking, “He’s still there?” Now a senior, Coble has become known as one of the most prolific scorers in the conference. After ranking fourth in the league with an average of 15.5 points per game last season, Coble is being looked to by Carmody to finish off his Northwestern career in style. A second-team All-Big Ten selection a year ago, Coble is the only player in program history to lead the team in both scoring and rebounding in each of his first three seasons. “Kevin has gotten a lot stronger,” said Carmody. “He worked hard this summer to get his body filled out. He had a lot to do with us being successful last season. He’s going to have to take on more of a leadership role this season. He’s not going to have to dominate because we have a lot of veterans, but people need to be able to look to him. He needs to make sure that some of the younger guys keep progressing. When you have a really good player like Kevin is, sometimes he can make everyone’s game jump a couple of levels. How he goes about his business is really important, and I’ve never had any complaints about that in the past.” Following a memorable summer, John Shurna returns as a starter at another forward spot. The Glen Ellyn, Ill., product had a productive

Carmody is looking for Shurna to display increased consistency this season. “I think John had a nice year last year,” said Carmody. “He had some very good games for us where he looked like he was the best player on the court. He also had some games where he looked like a freshman. He has played enough minutes where he shouldn’t look like a young guy out there. He should be a veteran as a sophomore. For about six weeks this summer, he was playing against very good competition as a member of the U.S. Under-19 team both here and in New Zealand. He can really shoot the ball, run and rebound. He just needs to keep improving his defense.” Fellow sophomore Luka Mirkovic also displayed tremendous potential during his freshman campaign. He split time with classmate Kyle Rowley, giving the Wildcats an inside presence they had been lacking in previous seasons. “Luka had a nice year last year,” Carmody said. “He had some very good games for us. I thought he was a little robotic at first, but I thought he got better and better as the season went along. He knows he needs to get better and he’s a hard worker who’s capable of it. I think he’s used to American basketball now and I’m expecting real good things from him. He has worked hard on his shooting so if he can step out and make shots and pull defenders out, he’s going to be someone who’s tough to deal with.” Meanwhile, Rowley got the majority of the starting nods in the post last season and provided Northwestern with one of the biggest bodies it has had on its roster in recent memory. The Wildcats are hoping that Rowley can bounce back from a foot injury he suffered over the summer that has sidelined him through portions of the preseason. “Kyle was doing really well in the spring and the summer and then he broke a bone in his foot in August. We’ll see how the rehab process goes and how quickly he comes along. We’ll be cautious with it and not rush him back. He was important for us last year. Defensively, guys got the ball in the post on him, but they didn’t score that much. He’s got a big body and he knows how to position himself. He’s really important to us.” A fourth post member of last season’s touted recruiting class, Davide Curletti got his first year off to a solid start and made one spot start in a home win over Ohio State. But as freshmen tend to do, Curletti struggled a bit over the course of the long season. Carmody believes that a strong offseason will allow Curletti to be a regular contributor in 2009-10. “Davide started out very strong last season and then seemed to wear

down a bit,” Carmody said. “He spent the whole summer here and worked out all the time. I think he’s much better than he was last year. He’s a pretty physical guy who has good legs and a good motor. Now he just needs to stay with it and be consistent. I think he can help us on the backboards. He can provide matchup problems for a lot of teams. He’s got a good shot to help us.” In addition to the talented sophomore class, Northwestern has a solid group of upperclassmen that it can turn to as well. Leading the way is senior Jeff Ryan who has both the size and athleticism to help the Wildcats at multiple positions. “Jeff is a pretty versatile guy who can swing from guard to forward,” Carmody said. “He’s a high IQ guy and knows what’s going on. He just needs to play with confidence. He’s a good dribbler, passer and defender and can run and jump. If you’re good at all of those things, now let’s put it all together.” Ditto for junior Mike Capocci. Perhaps the most athletic player on the NU roster, Capocci can help tremendously if he can prove that he can incorporate his skills into game situations. “Going into his junior year, this is the time that Mike needs to put it all together,” said Carmody. “Most of the parts are there, now he needs to put it together on the court. He’s a guy who can really help us with his athleticism.” Yet another player who can be a mismatch for the opposition is Ivan Peljusic. The redshirt junior feeds off emotion and Carmody hopes Peljusic can find the right balance of playing with energy, yet under control. “I think Ivan can have a good year. He has all the physical tools, he just tries to do too much sometimes. We really stress with him that we need to eliminate the turnovers and just let the game come to you. He’s an athletic guy and is a good basketball player, but sometimes he gets too excited out there. He needs to play a little more calmly, but I don’t want to take away the enthusiasm because he’s one of the best-liked guys on the team and I want to see him do well.” THE SCHEDULE The Wildcats will be challenged early and often throughout the 2009-10 campaign, as they are set to play 18 of the 31 regular-season games against teams that appeared in postseason play a year ago. After winning a schoolrecord 13 home games last season, Northwestern has a program-best 19 games scheduled for Welsh-Ryan Arena. The regular-season slate opens Nov. 13 as the ’Cats take on local foe Northern Illinois. It will be the first meeting between the schools since the 1986-87 season. Butler, which is expected to begin the season ranked in the top 25, makes the trek to Evanston five days later. Northwestern then takes part in the Chicago Invitational Challenge, hosting Tennessee State and Liberty Nov. 22 and 24, respectively, at WelshRyan Arena. The event then moves to the UIC Pavilion where the Wildcats take on Notre Dame Nov. 27 followed by a matchup against either Saint Louis or Iowa State the following day. This year’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge sees the ’Cats travel to North Carolina State Dec. 1. It is the lone road nonconference game the Wildcats have scheduled this season. Pac-10 foe Stanford is on the schedule for the fourth straight season as the Cardinal comes to Evanston Dec. 19. The Big Ten Conference has been rated by many prognosticators as the top league in the country heading into the 2009-10 season and Northwestern will be put through the gauntlet right out of the gates. NU’s first 10 conference games are against teams that appeared in last season’s NCAA tournament. Northwestern starts league play on the road Dec. 30 at in-state rival Illinois. The Big Ten home season tips off Jan. 2 when the Wildcats welcome defending national runner-up Michigan State. NU has four home games over a five-game stretch in early February before finishing with three of its last four conference games on the road. The 2009 Big Ten Tournament is set for March 11-14 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.
