A 1,000-yard rusher as a freshman and sophomore, senior Tyrell Sutton carried 21 times and turned in his 13th 100-yard rushing performance. The native of Akron, Ohio, entered 2008 needing just four rushing yards to reach 3,000 for his career, a total he eclipsed with a six-yard burst on his first carry of the day. He totaled a game-high 185 all-purpose yards. Aug 30, 2008 His fumble on the first play from scrimmage in the at Ryan Field second half gave Syracuse the ball on the Northwestern Attendance: 20,015 9 and set up a 2-yard run by Curtis Brinkley that put the Orange ahead 10-9, but Sutton then caught a 12-yard pass from senior quarterback C.J. Bachér to push the Wildcats back in front, 16-10. Brendan Smith intercepted a pass from Orange quarterback Andrew Robinson and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown that made it 23-10 with 2:13 left in the quarter, then Bachér found sophomore superback Josh Rooks with a 2-yard toss in the fourth that gave the Wildcats their 20-point winning margin. Bachér, who got picked off on the first drive and had two passes broken up on the second, finished the day 23-for-35 through the air for 215 yards, marking the 17th time in his 18-career starts he has thrown for more than 200 yards. The Syracuse backfield found itself under pressure much of the day, facing a defensive attack spearheaded by senior linebacker Malcolm Arrington. Arrington finished with a team-leading 10 tackles, two of which were for a loss. Robinson was called for intentional grounding with Quentin Davie bearing down on him in the end zone for NU’s first points of the season on a second quarter safety.

Senior running back Tyrell Sutton ran for two touchdowns and Northwestern’s defense made two critical fourth-down stops down the stretch, leading the Wildcats to a 24-20 victory over Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C. In a game that featured four lead changes, Northwestern once again managed to win in dramatic fashion. The ’Cats improved to 15-3 in their last 18 games decided by seven points or less. Senior running back Omar Conteh gave Northwestern the lead for good with a 2-yard touchdown run with Sept. 6, 2008 9:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. The TD capped a at Wade Stadium nine-play, 72-yard drive by the Wildcats. NU had trailed, Attendance: 23,614 20-17, in the fourth quarter after Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis scored on a 16-yard run. Sutton’s two touchdowns came on an 18-yard scamper in the first quarter and a 4-yard rush early in the second. His two scores give him sole possession of fourth place on the school’s career rushing touchdowns list (27), passing former Wildcat Noah Herron. The senior carried the ball 16 times against Duke on his way to 66 yards rushing. Northwestern set up Sutton’s second score when, following a muffed punt by Duke, senior wide receiver Eric Peterman took the handoff from quarterback C.J. Bachér only to find a wide open Bachér for a 25-yard completion at the 4-yard line. Bachér finished the game with 226 yards through the air on 14-for-31 passing, marking the 18th time in his 19 career starts he has surpassed the 200-yard plateau. Senior linebacker Prince Kwateng had 11 tackles, a number matched by junior safety Brendan Smith. Cornerback Sherrick McManis tied his career high with 10 total stops, rounding out a trio of Wildcats who finished in double-digits for tackles. NU compiled five tackles-for-loss in the game, including a pair of sacks.

Tyrell Sutton ran for 101 yards and three touchdowns, leading Northwestern to a 33-7 victory over Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) power Southern Illinois at Ryan Field. Sutton had 17 carries and three touchdowns, one in each of the second, third and fourth quarters. NU (3-0) scored 27 unanswered points in a game that was played in a steady rain that closed down a highway north of the city and flooded streets near Ryan Field. Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bachér completed 21 of 29 passes for 184 yards and Amado Villarreal kicked Sept. 13, 2008 a single-game career-best four field goals. He also at Ryan Field scored a single-game career-high 15 points in the game Attendance: 19,062 for NU. The Salukis had a 7-6 lead to end the first quarter after a 19-yard rush by running back Larry Warner as time expired in the period, but the Wildcats took over from there. Sutton scored on a 44-yard cutback run before Villarreal connected on his third field goal of the first half to put Northwestern on top, 16-7, going into the locker room. Northwestern redshirt freshman Jacob Schmidt, a walk-on, blocked a Scott Ravanesi punt in the third quarter and recovered it at the Salukis’ 5-yard line. Villarreal then kicked a 20-yard field goal to make it 26-7. Sutton put the game away in the fourth with his third touchdown run. Southern Illinois gained 11 yards on 12 plays in the third quarter, seven coming on Joe Allaria’s run to end the stanza. Northwestern defensive end Corey Wootton had two of Northwestern’s six sacks and three of its 12 tackles for a loss. NU’s six sacks were the most since it totaled seven against Michigan State in 2001. Southern Illinois came in ranked 13th in the Football Championship Subdivision coaches poll.

Northwestern’s defense came to play against Ohio, holding the Bobcats to a single-game school-record four net rushing yards to help the Wildcats to their first 4-0 start since 1962. Northwestern made 14 tackles for loss including five sacks of Ohio quarterback Boo Jackson, who set an Ohio school record for all-purpose yards the week before against Central Michigan. The Wildcats also blocked two field goals, recovered two fumbles, made two interceptions and broke up six other passes in a 16-8 victory at Ryan Field. Overall, the Bobcats had 14 plays (for 62 yards) of negative yardage. Sept. 20, 2008 Redshirt freshman defensive end Vince Browne at Ryan Field had a huge defensive day, recording seven tackles (four Attendance: 22,069 for loss) including three sacks to go along with a forced fumble, a blocked field goal and a quarterback hurry. Amado Villarreal kicked three first-half field goals and senior running back Omar Conteh found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run very late in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 16-0 lead going into the locker room. Senior Tyrell Sutton had 76 rushing yards on nine attempts in addition to three catches for 27 yards in the first half, but did not return in the second half after sustaining a leg injury. His receiving yardage put him over 1,000 for his career; he is the second student-athlete in school history to have more than 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in a career, joining Ricky Edwards (1979-84). Ohio found the scoreboard late in the third quarter when Jackson’s 12-yard pass to Andrew Mooney followed by a successful two-point conversion cut Northwestern’s lead in half, 16-8. The passing touchdown was the first given up by the Wildcats this season. Browne finished the game with four TFL’s, which included three of NU’s five pass sacks. Northwestern QB C.J. Bachér went 18-for-35 for 133 yards, and ran for another 37, but was picked off four times after not throwing an interception since the first drive of the season against Syracuse. Conteh ran for 35 yards in relief of Sutton.

Senior C.J. Bachér hit Eric Peterman for his third touchdown pass of the game with 7:54 remaining in the fourth quarter at Iowa, completing a 14-point comeback to give Northwestern a 22-17 victory and a 5-0 start to the season. NU trailed the Hawkeyes, 17-3, late in the second quarter when Jeravin Matthews recovered a fumbled punt—the first of two fumble recoveries in the game for the true freshman—to set up a 1-yard touchdown strike from Bachér to senior Rasheed Ward just before the half. After the break, the Wildcats went on a four-play, Sept. 27, 2008 76-yard drive capped by a Bachér-to-Peterman TD toss at Kinnick Stadium to bring NU back within one, 17-16. Bachér finished the Attendance: 70,585 game 28-for-45 for 284 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. Senior Tyrell Sutton had 149 all-purpose yards in the game, including 72 on six catches out of the backfield. Ward had a career-best 10 catches for 94 receiving yards, with his scoring catch the first of his career since snagging one as a freshman in 2005. Peterman finished with two touchdown catches for the initial multi-score game of his career. Northwestern’s defense did not surrender a point in the second half while forcing five turnovers—including four fumbles—in the game. On the game’s final drive, Iowa earned a first-and-goal from the NU 8-yard line, but the ’Cats kept the Hawkeyes from reaching paydirt thanks in part to a fourth-down pass deflection by senior lineman John Gill. Prior to that stand, the Wildcats killed another fourth-quarter Hawkeyes’ drive with back-to-back sacks on second and third down by junior defensive end Corey Wootton and junior safety Brad Phillips. Junior cornerback Sherrick McManis registered a career-best 11 tackles in the game to match Phillips, who also had a career-high 11 stops.

Northwestern running back Tyrell Sutton won the tailback battle with Michigan State’s Javon Ringer, but it was the Spartans who won the game, thanks to three Northwestern turnovers and some excellent MSU special teams play. In a battle involving two top-25 teams (USA Today Coaches’ poll), No. 19 Michigan State scored the first 17 points en route to a 37-20 victory over No. 22 Northwestern in the Wildcats’ Big Ten home opener. The defeat halted Northwestern’s five-game winning streak while extending Spartans’ victory string to six. Oct. 11, 2008 Sutton ran for a game-high 139 yards and averaged a at Ryan Field game-best 6.0 yards per carry while Ringer, a Heisman Attendance: 32,527 Trophy candidate, was limited to 124 yards (on 35 carries) for 3.5 ypc. He did score a pair of TD’s, however. Sutton also finished with a game-high 183 all-purpose yards. Michigan State earned the game’s first 17 points with three first-quarter scores en route to a 24-7 halftime advantage. All three of NU’s turnovers in the game—a fumble and two C.J. Bachér interceptions—came in the first half. Sutton ripped off a career-high 66-yard run in Northwestern’s first drive of the second half. Bachér then hit Rasheed Ward for a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it 24-14. Bachér went 34-for-61 for 283 yards, a TD and two interceptions. His 61 passing attempts marked a career-high and the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. The Wildcats tried an onside kick, but were penalized for interference. That gave the Spartans good field position, which they didn’t waste. Ringer ended the quick drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to keep Michigan State’s lead safe. The two teams then traded a pair of field goals down the stretch. NU kicker Amado Villarreal connected on kicks from 31 and 22 yards to give him 11 made field goals in 13 attempts on the season.

Six different Wildcats found the end zone and Northwestern’s defense forced five turnovers in a dominating 48-26 homecoming victory over Purdue at Ryan Field. Eric Peterman, Sidney Stewart, Brendan Mitchell and Tyrell Sutton all caught touchdown passes, while C.J. Bachér and Omar Conteh ran for scores against the Boilermakers. Amado Villarreal added a pair of field goals to help the ’Cats to a 6-1 start to the season. Purdue scored the first six points on a pair of firstquarter field goals before NU answered with 24 secondquarter points to take a 24-12 halftime lead. Bachér hit Oct. 18, 2008 Peterman on a 45-yard strike before Peterman found at Ryan Field Stewart for a 30-yard touchdown toss on an end around. Attendance: 27.163 The TD pass was the first of Peterman’s career while the scoring catch was a first for Stewart. Villarreal added the first of his two field goals before Bachér connected with Sutton on a nine-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Bachér was 20-of33 with three touchdowns and an interception in the game. Sutton added 158 all-purpose yards—96 on the ground and 62 on four catches. In the third quarter, Villarreal made his second field goal before Bachér hit Mitchell on a 1-yard touchdown pass to give NU a 34-12 lead. The catch was Mitchell’s first of the season and the first of the touchdown variety in his career. A Bachér 1-yard run and a 14yard scamper from Conteh in the fourth quarter put the finishing touches on NU’s scoring. The Wildcats’ defense put the clamps on a Boilermaker comeback attempt, thanks in part to three fourth-quarter turnovers. Sherrick McManis made an interception and forced a fumble, which safety Brian Peters returned 39 yards to set up Conteh’s score. Jordan Mabin also made a pick, returning it 38 yards to the Purdue 1-yard line, where Bachér punched it in three plays later.

Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bachér compiled 219 yards of total offense, including a career-best 64 yards on the ground, and one rushing touchdown at Indiana, but five NU turnovers doomed the ’Cats and spurred IU to a 21-19 win. Senior running back Tyrell Sutton ran for 77 yards and a score for No. 22 Northwestern. The Wildcats defense played well, allowing the Hoosiers to convert on just 5-of-17 third-down attempts (Northwestern was successful on 10-of-19 third-down plays). NU senior defensive tackle John Gill recorded a career-best 3.0 tackles for loss that covered 21 yards, Oct. 25, 2008 including two sacks for 19 yards. Junior defensive end at Memorial Stadium Corey Wootton also had 3.0 tackles for loss including Attendance: 30,698 a sack. Junior safety Brad Phillips led all Wildcats with eight stops on the day. Northwestern got off to a strong start on its first drive of the game with Bachér completing 5-of-7 passes and Sutton rushing the ball eight times for 34 yards as NU moved the ball 90 yards down the field on 20 total plays. Senior place-kicker Amado Villarreal capped the drive with a 25-yard field goal to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. After the Hoosiers scored, the Wildcats regained a 9-7 advantage with five minutes left in the second quarter on Sutton’s 1-yard scoring run. It was Sutton’s 37th career touchdown, leaving him just one shy of the Northwestern all-time mark for end zone appearances. Indiana used a trick play to get out to a 21-12 lead in the third quarter. Bachér closed the gap for NU later in the period. After being flushed out of the pocket to his left, he took off for the corner of the end zone, lowered his shoulder and collided with an IU defender on his way across the goal line to bring Northwestern to within two, but that is where the scoring would end.

2008 REGULAR-SEASON RECAPS Northwestern MINNESOTA

game 9

24 17

Junior Mike Kafka filled in for an injured C.J. Bachér at quarterback, running for 217 yards and throwing for a pair of touchdowns to lead Northwestern past Minnesota, 24-17. Kafka averaged 8.0 yards on 27 carries, including runs of 53, 38, 30 and 28, to establish a Big Ten singlegame rushing record by a quarterback. He was the first Wildcat to reach 200 yards rushing since Tyrell Sutton ran for 212 against Illinois in 2005. Northwestern jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 36-yard touchdown strike from Kafka Nov. 1, 2008 to freshman Jeremy Ebert on the game’s opening drive. at HHH Metrodome Later in the quarter, senior Amado Villarreal nailed a Attendance: 54,122 34-yard field goal. Minnesota came back to take a 14-10 lead, but Kafka led the ’Cats on a two-play, 55-yard drive comprised of a 53-yard scamper for the quarterback and a two-yard TD toss from Kafka to sophomore superback Josh Rooks. A late field goal by the Gophers knotted the game, 17-17, heading into halftime. Neither team was able to find the end zone on offense in the second half until the game’s final drive. Deep in its own territory with under a minute to go, Minnesota chose to try a long pass down the middle. Senior David Oredugba deflected the Adam Weber offering into the arms of junior Brendan Smith, who ran it back 48 yards to the house to give Northwestern the 24-17 win. Nate Williams and Sherrick McManis paced the Northwestern defense with eight tackles each, while both Williams and Corey Wootton recorded sacks for the Wildcats, who continue to lead the Big Ten in the category.

OHIO STATE Northwestern

45 10

Northwestern answered an early score from No. 12 Ohio State but the Buckeyes used a big second quarter to pull away from the Wildcats, 45-10. After OSU drove down and scored on its opening drive, NU quarterback Mike Kafka responded with a 13play, 67-yard drive of his own, capping it with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone to knot the game, 7-7. Kafka rushed 10 times on the drive for 35 yards. The Buckeyes then took advantage of a Wildcats’ turnover and eventually built a 24-7 halftime lead. Northwestern came out of the locker room and drove Nov. 8, 2008 72 yards on 10 plays, helped by a 24-yard completion at Ryan Field from Kafka to Rasheed Ward, to cut the Ohio State lead Attendance: 47,130 to 14, 24-10, on a 25-yard Amado Villarreal field goal. That would be all the scoring the Wildcats would be able to do, however, with Ohio State scoring 21 unanswered points to complete its win. Kafka at one point had 126 yards rushing before several sacks brought him back under 100 for the game. He finished with 83 yards on a career-high 29 carries, while completing 18 of 27 passing attempts for 177 yards to total 260 yards of total offense. Sophomore running back Stephen Simmons, starting in place of injured Tyrell Sutton and Omar Conteh, recorded 34 yards on 14 carries. Eric Peterman led NU’s receiving corps with six catches for 78 yards. Nate Williams had a career-high 12 tackles to lead the defense. Scoring Summary OHIO STATE NORTHWESTERN

game 12

ILLINOIS NORTHWESTERN

Northwestern scored on its first two drives of the third quarter while shutting out Michigan for the entire second half to earn a 21-14 win on a day dominated by driving rain and snow. The Wildcats began the scoring in the first quarter when sophomore Stephen Simmons scampered 21 yards to the end zone on a third down play. Michigan would answer with a TD late in the first quarter before returning a blocked punt for a score to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. After the break, Northwestern quarterback C.J. Nov.15, 2008 Bachér led a pair of scoring drives to put the Wildcats at Michigan Stadium back on top for good. First he hit senior Ross Lane for a Attendance: 107,856 17-yard score on third-and-goal. The catch was the first TD reception of the year for Lane. Bachér then capped NU’s next drive with a 53-yard strike to senior Eric Peterman. The play was NU’s longest through the air on the year, and the third-longest reception of Peterman’s career. Meanwhile, the Northwestern defense continued to hold Michigan at bay. The Wildcats forced a pair of turnovers in the game, including a fourth quarter interception in the end zone by redshirt freshman Jordan Mabin. The Wildcats allowed just 83 yards through the air for the Wolverines. Simmons finished the game with 56 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown, while Bachér was 17-of-29 for 198 yards through the air with two TD’s and two interceptions in his first game back after missing two contests with a hamstring injury. Lane led NU with seven catches for 77 yards, while Peterman had five grabs for 79 yards. Five Wildcats led the defense with seven tackles each: Brian Peters, John Gill, Nate Williams, Brad Phillips and Kevin Mims.

Northwestern played its most complete game of the season on Senior Day, winning back the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk from Illinois for the final time after it was announced prior to the game that the trophy would be retired. The Wildcats shut out the Fighting Illini through the first half, taking a 13-0 lead into the locker room on a first-quarter touchdown run by sophomore Stephen Simmons and a second-quarter TD toss from C.J. Bachér to Ross Lane. The quarters were the 19th and 20th shutout periods of the season for the Northwestern defense, which ranked as the fourth most improved unit in the Nov. 22, 2008 nation in 2008. at Ryan Field In the second half, Illinois cut NU’s lead to six with Attendance: 32,166 an early TD before Amado Villarreal nailed the first of his two field goals in the game to stake the Wildcats to a 16-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. An Illini field goal made it a one score game when the Wildcats got a game-changing performance from safety Brendan Smith. Illinois was forced to punt on its next possession, and Smith recorded a career-best 51-yard punt return to set up an 18-yard TD toss from Bachér to Eric Peterman. Simmons rushed into the end zone to complete the two-point conversion to put the game on ice for the Wildcats. Bachér finished 22-of-33 through the air for 230 yards, two scores and a pick. Simmons was NU’s leading rusher with 69 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts. Prince Kwateng tied his career high with 11 tackles to the lead the Northwestern defense. Defensive end Kevin Mims had a career day on his Senior Day as well, recording 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Sherrick McManis snared his second interception of the season in the game.
