Family hopes for dog to sniff out type 1 diabetes Ashley Miller amiller@nvdaily.com

MORE INFORMATION

For Bentley Seidel, 4, of Toms Brook, a type 1 diabetic alert dog could save his young life.

• Participate: https://www.facebook.com/ bentleyalertdog - Bethany Seidel uses Facebook to post the various events sheʼs having to raise funds for the dog.

Bethany Seidel, Bentley’s mom, sometimes wakes up every two hours to check on her son, worried he may not make it through the night. “With type 1 diabetes, we just don’t know,” Bethany Seidel, said. “There are so many highs and lows. Each day brings its own struggle.”

“Right now he’s in what they call a honeymoon phase,” Joshua Seidel said of his son. “His pancreas is trying to work a little, so we’re giving him less injections.”

In July, Bethany Seidel and her husband Joshua noticed their son’s behavior had changed. At first it was subtle things like wetting the bed and constantly being thirsty. In September, the couple noticed Bentley’s mood had also changed.

But when Bentley’s pancreas stops working, the couple has to give Bentley up to four shots of insulin daily, depending on food intake and carbohydrates. The family returned to Toms Brook where they’re trying to live their lives normally.

“He looked depressed and extremely tired,” Bethany Seidel said.

“His honeymoon phase means a lot more lows,” Bethany Seidel said. “It’s much more dangerous because it means he could die.”

“And much more hostile and violent,” Joshua Seidel added. One night via a texting conversation the couBENTLEY SEIDEL ple began discussing possible explanations for Bentley’s obvious health changes. ing while his family learned about his life“I had a glucose meter from a previous preg- changing prognosis. nancy, and decided to test his blood sugar,” Bethany Seidel explained. “It came back high. Which I didn’t understand.”

Tiffany Akers Hockman, of Strasburg, a family friend of the Seidels and a mother of a type 1 diabetic, has learned over the last three She said she reached out to the one individual years that there’s a common misconception that all forms of diabetes are alike. that she knew could help: her pediatrician. The outcome was not what she expected. There are three types of diabetes: 1, 2 and “The pediatrician’s office told me to take him straight to the emergency room,” Bethany Seidel said. Her husband was working, so she drove Bentley to the emergency room in Harrisonburg.

With diabetes, highs and/or lows could be fatal. “With a low he could fall asleep and go into a coma,” Bethany Seidel said. “And never wake up again.” Which is why the family needs a diabetes alert dog. Diabetic alert dogs are specially trained to provide independence, companionship and life-saving abilities. The human body releases various chemicals in the body that have a distinct odor that is commonly undetectable by humans, but are to specially trained dogs. By providing a saliva sample, the dog is trained to the exact chemical map of the saliva, which allows the dog to notice any change in their humans’ sugar levels by smell. By training the dogs in this manner, the dogs are better able to focus on the task at hand and exclude other scents they might pick up on the job.

The news was devastating. Bentley was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

gestational diabetes, common during pregnancy. According to the American Diabetes Association, type 1 diabetes is commonly diagnosed in children and young adults. Roughly 1.25 million Americans have type 1 diabetes and an estimated 40,000 will be newly diagnosed each year.

Unable to be treated at the emergency room in Harrisonburg, Bentley was medically transported to the University of Virgnia Medical Center, where he spent two days being treat-

A dog from Diabetic Alert Dogs of America costs $15,000. In the last five weeks since their return from the hospital the Seidel family has raised roughly $4,800 toward their goal.

Bethany Seidel is working hard to get her son’s story out in the community. “We want people to understand the warning signs and its severity,” she said. “Type 1 diabetes is bigger than people realize.” Hockman agrees. “Everyone associates type 1 and type 2 together,” she said. “But they’re so incredibly different. If anything, I want Bentley’s story to spark a conversation about type 1 diabetes in the community.”

VDOT joins first responders to clear interstate crashes Lewis Millholland lmillholland@nvdaily.com When a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline overturned on Interstate 66 in the Front Royal area in 2013, the line of cars soon stretched back three miles. “You’ve got all of that traffic sitting back there within a couple hundred yards of an 8,000-gallon bomb,” said Ed Carter, assistant residency administrator for the Virginia Department of Transportation in Edinburg, who was on the scene that day. The truck was tangled up in the metal cable wire guard rail, and the threat of an accidental spark was too great to risk simply hauling the wreck away. The gasoline company sent its contractors to siphon out the gas but discovered the valves on the crashed truck were too damaged to use. At one point, the contractor even considered drilling directly into the tank.

Or, if the wreck is severe, VDOT and other first responders can clear the wreckage to the median to free up traffic lanes and return later to handle the recovery process. Aside from the economic impact, effective queue management is vital for preventing secondary accidents. “What happens is (drivers) are coming down the road at 70, 75 mph and pop over a hill and all of the traffic's at a dead stop,” Carter said. “We had one the other morning on 317 in Frederick County. Strasburg reaches out to community to name event space The Town of Strasburg plans on naming an event space across from the Town Hall. But town officials aren’t going to name the space by themselves; instead, they plan on giving community members a large say in the matter. Michelle Bixler, economic development and marketing manager for the town, said that the town is giving citizens the month of November to submit ideas on what the town’s event space should be named. The process, Bixler said, allows the town to work alongside community members in their development of a space that is designed GIFT RT CE IFICATES AVAILABLE!

Bixer said that the town has not decided whether or not it will display the name of the event space.

But the reason the town decided to give the grant management team some say on the names was more practical, Bixler said. Having citizens vote among over 20 ideas would simply be unmanageable.

“Certainly that would make sense,” Bixler said. “But it’s not in the plans anywhere yet. But it would be lovely to have that be the case; we’ll just have to see what that looks like moving forward.”

Fox ready to bring ‘blue-collar toughness’ back to Strasburg’s boys hoops program Brad Fauber bfauber@nvdaily.com STRASBURG – Larry Fox has worked his way up through the coaching pedestal in Strasburg High School’s boys basketball program. Now he’s the Rams’ head man. Fox, who coached the middle school program for a couple years and spent one season coaching Strasburg’s junior varsity boys basketball team last year, was approved as the Rams’ new varsity boys basketball coach at the Shenandoah County School Board meeting on Oct. 12. “I’m very excited,” Fox, a Front Royal native and current Strasburg resident, said Thursday evening. “It’s a great opportunity to really more or less represent our town, represent our community. The town takes a lot of pride in the students, the athletics, really. It’s just a great opportunity and I’ve grown up playing the sport. The coaches that have coached me have really taught me a lot, so it’s a blessing to give back to the sport.”

Smart ways to pay for holiday gifts Entertaining, dinners, gifts, travel, and decorating may make for a festive time of year, but the holidays certainly can put a strain on personal finances. No one wants to experience a financial hangover come January. Therefore, making a plan for paying for holiday expenditures now can help the average person save and protect their finances. Figuring out how to finance holiday purchases can be just as important as scoping out deals and cashing in coupons. Here’s a look at some of the ways to pay for holiday gifts. Credit cards Many consumers feel that credit cards are the safest way to make purchases, whether instore or online. With credit cards, shoppers are using a line of credit. Should fraudulent purchases be made or errors in accounting occur, shoppers aren’t responsible — the credit card company is in charge of tracking down or absorbing the error.

Giving the gift of charity The charity watchdog organization Charity Navigator says that total giving to charitable organizations equalled $390.05 billion in 2016. This was an increase of 2.7 percent in current dollars from 2015. In fact, giving has increased every year since 1976 with the exception of 1987, 2008 and 2009. Historically, religious groups receive the largest share of charitable donations. However, education-based charities and human services charities also received a large percentage of donations in 2016, says Giving USA’s 2017 Annual Report on Philanthropy. Giving can be a year-round occurrence, but philanthropy tends to rise during the holiday season when people are feeling charitable. Some people even turn their charitable efforts into gifts for loved ones. The following are some gift ideas that can benefit the recipient, the person doing the giving and a third-party group as well. Real estate Donating real estate can be an option for the person who has a piece of property or a home they no longer need. Rather than face taxes on the property once it’s been sold, donating it to an organization or individual represents a charitable offering, and in some cases, may be eligible for a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the real estate. Giving a plot of land or transferring a deed to a home to someone worthy can make for a memorable, life-altering gift. Educational bequest A donation to a university or other school may help pay the tuitions of future students. Some philanthropists like to fund particular renovations at their alma maters or fund scholarships for students looking to work in a particular industry. Charitable trust or stocks A charitable trust is a great way to transfer wealth to heirs or simply provide a stream of income over the years. Individuals can establish a period of time during which the assets are held in a trust and when those assets can be accessed. A tax-efficient way to give is to contribute to long-term securities in a person’s name. Recipients of such gifts can choose to cash in their stocks at a later date. Charitable giving rises during the holiday season. Providing opportunities for friends and loved ones can make a wonderful gift. Find out which options are best for you by speaking with a financial advisor or tax professional.

Baby’s first holiday gifts The holiday season is a magical time of the year for all age groups, but seems to be especially enjoyed by children. Even though infants and toddlers may not fully appreciate gifts under the tree or holiday lighting displays, that’s no reason not to make tots’ first foray into holiday giving any less special. Shopping for babies can be challenging because gift-givers may not want to overwhelm new parents with much more stuff — considering their homes may already be inundated with baby gear. However, it’s difficult to resist the temptation to purchase adorable infant and toddler toys and trinkets, particularly when celebrating a child’s first holiday

season. The following are some practical and thoughtful gift suggestions for shoppers who want to make children’s first holiday seasons as special as possible. Activity chairs and mats Young children who are not yet mobile require entertainment be brought to them. This can be achieved through the various activity chairs and mats designed to stimulate young brains. Children who are practicing tummy time skills can benefit from flat mats. Once baby is holding himself up a bit, he can sit in an activity chair that has teethers, noisemakers and other colorful toys built right into the seat.

Age-specific toys It is important for shoppers to check product age recommendations prior to purchasing. Examples of gifts that can be appropriate for newborns include soothing rockers and swings, nightlights and cuddly stuffed animal/pacifier hybrids. Teether rings or musical gifts may suit slightly older infants. Older tots may enjoy exercise saucers, bouncing swings or tactile reasoning toys, such as those that require matching shapes with openings in a toy. Clothing Within the first year of life, babies go through several growth spurts and will quickly outgrow their clothing. Parents will need to continually meet new wardrobe demands. Think ahead and buy clothing that will be needed in the near future, and consider the

seasons in which they’ll be used. Tack three months onto the baby’s age and that is likely the size he or she will need next. Classic gifts Rockers have long been popular gifts for young children. While a little one may not be able to ride a rocker just yet, this can be a great addition to a nursery until it proves functional. Although a rocking horse is the standard, unicorns are currently having their moment, so a unicorn rocker can be a playful touch. Personalized keepsakes Placing the date and baby’s name on gifts instantly transforms them into collector’s items that can be cherished through the years. In addition to ornaments, think about engraving photo frames or make a photo book with all of the baby memories thus far.
