Old Town Winchester marks calendars for new, returning events By Rachel Mahoney WINCHESTER - Through 2016, Old Town Winchester will bring back some familiar festivities while adding a few new events and elements into the mix. Old Town Development Board and its programming partner Full Circle Marketing announced some new plans and developments this year at a news conference. A new event, the St. Paddy’s Celtic Fest, was held on March 12. Downtown Manager Jennifer Bell said the Celtic Fest occurred the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day so as not to interfere with other events or family traditions.

Dario Savarese, founder and president of Full Circle Marketing, announced that OctoBeer Fest will run into Sunday starting in 2016, a day longer than in past years. “Since it’s been so well-received through the years, we’re going to add a Sunday to it,” he said. “We’re going to just close it down a little bit, make it tighter knit on just Sunday on the Old Courthouse lawn area.”

Printouts add new dimension to landscaping By Tom Crosby The digital age has entered the landscaping business in Frederick County.

garden shows, like the one held this past March at the Apple Blossom Mall, the company generates interest, especially with examples of the 3-D images.

Sitting at his computer using a complicated software construction program, Brian Wismer carefully entered the measurements of a potential customer’s yard.

“We really listen to the customer and we are flexible,” said Wismer, often altering and tweaking plans to reflect a homeowner’s desires and sometimes making suggestions based on the more than 35 years of experience gained by Wismer and his team.

He creates 3-D images of walkways, fire pits, patios, waterfalls and pergolas along with appropriate flora for a complete landscaping design - sometimes populated with moving people images for perspective.

“We work to develop a complete design and then break costs down to see what is first wanted to be done,” he said. “Many times we come back and do more later that year or next.”

Wismer is president of Prosperity Landscaping on Front Royal Pike in Stephens City, and along with his brother Michael and Project Manager Brandon Hughes, says, “Our specialty is outdoor living spaces and the computer allows us to show an entire design concept.” For the past two years, he has created “our hard niche” allowing the 20-employee company to show customers potential hardscaping - the building of concrete and stone structures incorporated into traditional landscapes. Using colored computer printouts, he shows clients like Charles Warren, of Middletown, how to improve the look and utility of 2 acres surrounding Warren’s 7,000-square-foot log and stucco mountain lodge home.

The Warren’s have been using Prosperity annually for the past five years and now boast a paved patio, garage stone steps, split rail fence and flowering garden beds. Rich Cooley/Daily

Spring in Old Town Winchester…

It’s not just for Apple Blossom anymore! Old Town Winchester offers an exciting line up of events and activities this spring. From walks to runs and bands to beer gardens, the Loudoun Street Mall is bustling with activity. With the arrival of spring comes the popular Apple Blossom Festival, a ten day celebration with celebrities, dance parties, luncheons and two parades! In the past, Apple Blossom was the season, now it has become the kick off to a busy event season in Old Town Winchester. After the dreariness of winter, it is time to get out and shake off the dust of being inside for four months. Spring in Old Town Winchester is a lovely time to stroll along the Loudoun Street Mall, taking in the sights and smells of a city reawakening from winter’s slumber, to grab a drink with friends and listen to a

street performer or dance to a local band. One exciting new event this spring is the aMuse Arts and Crafts Fair on May 21st. Organized by the Shenandoah Arts Council, aMuse is a free festival showcasing local artistic talent. From 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., all are welcome to enjoy art and craft booths, artist demonstrations, and even a chainsaw portraitist! Local artist Glenn Richardson will carve your face into a block of wood! Other local artists will have booths to sell their handmade crafts and artwork. Jaimianne Amicucci, Executive Director of the Shenandoah Arts Council, is excited to showcase many local artists with a great variety of styles at this event. “All of our aMuse partners feel like Winchester has this great, budding art scene - we had no

idea just how many artists are in this area!” Jaimianne, along with Anthony Jacobin of the Gray Gallery, Kerry Stavely of Tin Top Art and Handmade, and Kim Johnston of the Winchester Art Market, are excited to bring these artists together for the first of hopefully many art festivals downtown.

Winchester celebrates the arts each month with First Fridays in Old Town. The Old Town Welcome Center is now hosting a different Shenandoah Art Council artist exhibit every month and encourages the public to stop in on First Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to meet the artist of the month.

Numerous other businesses and galleries stay open late on First Fridays to showcase local art. The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum also takes part in First Fridays, staying open late from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. - and admission is free! The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is also looking forward to celebrating their 20th anniversary on Saturday, April 9 with entertainers, magic shows, juggling, music from the Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy and much more (admission is $5). If you are looking for a competitive event, look no further than the Loudoun Street Mile, run annually for the past 29 years on Memorial Day. Kids age 6-11, as well as adults, compete in this downtown race. There’s even a Tot Trot for kids 5 and under. The Loudoun Street Mile averages around 550 runners every year! When Runners’ Retreat took over hosting the event 14 years ago, owner Mark Stickley wanted to make sure it was a true family event. “That’s why we organize it the way we do: we have the adult women run first, then the girls, followed by the boys, and finally, the adult men. That way, everyone can meet up at the starting line and the kids aren’t ever left alone there.” Proceeds from the race this year will

again benefit the Laurel Center in Winchester. It’s a great opportunity to come enjoy downtown, get fit, and raise money for an amazing organization! There are even more events and annual fundraisers for local charities to get you out of the house and stretching your legs this spring. The annual Great Strides walk for Cystic Fibrosis will take place May 22 in Old Town Winchester and the Special Olympics Torch Run will go through Old Town on June 7. Both offer great

Chest Pain Center is reaccredited By Kaley Toy

HEART ATTACK SIGNS

WINCHESTER Winchester Medical Center’s Chest Pain Center has been reaccredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. Kayla Roberts, director of the Chest Pain Center, said the accreditation standards show quality improvement and standardization of care. The reaccreditation was performed by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care with on-site evaluations looking at speed and effectiveness of patient care, continuous process improvement efforts, staff and physician competency and training, and outreach programs created to educate the community. This process is performed every three years. “Chest pain is the second most common reason for people to go to the emergency department,” Roberts said. Dr. Neal Gaither, cardiologist and medical director of the Chest Pain Center, added that there is a growing population of older and at-risk patients in this area.

Private venues set the stage from scratch M

Event planner Amy VanMeter said she’s seen more and more weddings on private land and at barns in recent years when working with clients across the Northern Shenandoah Valley. But while planning tented events, people tend to forget about needed resources and the little details.

event-ready.

“I really try to get a feel for couples when I’m talking with them, if it’s in the planning stages … to see how they’re going to handle it,” VanMeter said.

By the time all expenses have been accounted for, a tented event can end up costing just as much as renting a venue. Setting up a comprehensive budget early on can help eliminate forgotten incidental costs that can add up later.

Anytime between a year and nine months before the big date, wedding parties can “That’s a whole other animal than just plan- meet with event planners at the site to start ning a regular wedding at a venue,” she said. visualizing the wedding. She said tents are a must for outdoor events, no matter how pleasant the day may seem.

Some brides can face less-than-magical experiences because of unexpected complications that arise, while other wedding parties end up having a blast - whether rain or shine. Personal stress levels and adaptability should be taken into account when opting to set up a venue over renting one that’s already

Barns erase the necessity for a tent (and the costs involved) in most cases, but other expenses can come into play depending on the structure - usually setting up restrooms and fans. Tents can also provide some extra space when needed, but VanMeter said one close encounter with a tornado warning

The sentimental value of a family campsite or hallowed old haunt can definitely make the checklist worth the work. space into a unique tableau. And seeing the wedding party unwind and reap the rewards of a long planning process always makes for a fulfilling job well done. “For me, the payoff’s always been amongst the event happening - all the hard work for the most part is done and everyone is enjoying and celebrating,” she said.

Not only can weather patterns literally rain on a bride’s parade; the venue might not have adequate soil drainage and turn into a mud pit days after a storm. Additionally, things like water, electricity, restrooms and lighting need to be set up for a comfortable and enjoyable celebration.

Every April, we are reminded of how much the world still needs superheroes. That’ s because April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month. Superheroes are renowned for their bravery, even when staring into the face of adversity. At the ChildSafe CenterCAC, we see superherolike bravery everyday on the faces of the nearly 250 children from our community that we serve each year. We work with these children to help them tell their stories and begin to heal from the trauma of abuse. The ChildSafe CenterCAC gives child victims a way to share their stories in a safe and friendly place, in a manner that is sensitive to the developmental and emotional needs of children. The Multidisciplinary Team of professionals (law enforcement, prosecutors, social workers, medical and mental health providers, and victim advocates) who work collaboratively on these cases is like an entire team of superheroes working to protect our most vulnerable. To raise awareness, and celebrate the victories of our little heroes, every year in April, we dust off our capes, clean our tights, and lace up our sneakers to come together for our Annual 5k Superhero Walk/Run/Race. This year, our Superhero 5k and Kids’ Run is on Saturday, April 23 at 9:00AM at our Not-So-Secret Lair at Greenwood Mill Elementary School. People interested can register online at www.childsafecenter.com or by calling 540-303-7839.

Twenty years later, Discovery Museum still inspires young learners The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is pleased to announce our Twentieth Anniversary Celebration sponsored by Shenandoah Smiles. The event is scheduled for April 9th, 2016 and is offered at a reduced admission rate of $5 per person and is free for members of the museum. The celebration will begin at 9 AM and last until 5 PM. In 1994 Peggy Wolfe McKee, Mary Bruce Glaize, and Martha Wolfe dreamed of establishing a children’s science museum in Winchester, Virginia. Sparking creativity and igniting curiosity was their vision. Two years later, on April 20, 1996, their perseverance and dedication resulted in the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum. Since then, hundreds of thousands of visitors have benefited from informal educational and experiential learning at its best. The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum still strives to meet the mission developed by its founders by sparking creativity, igniting curiosity, and inspiring learning in visitors of all ages through exhibits, programming, outreach efforts, and special events. Activities planned for the celebration are no different. Museum staff member, Paul Limoges stated,

“When looking for entertainment on April 9th, we kept those values in mind.” Programs slated for the 20th Anniversary Celebration include: • Former world champion frisbee player, Gary Auerbach • Magician, Ryan Phillips • Famed choir group, Harambe • Cake contest (and tasting!) for all ages • Face painting, awards ceremonies, and much more! Building on its twenty year foundation, the museum has launched an endowment campaign to activate exciting exhibits along with new and evolving programs for the future. In celebration of its 20th year, friends of the museum are invited to donate $20, $200, $2,000 or more in commemoration of the anniversary. About Our Museum: Our mission at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is to ignite creativity, spark curiosity and inspire learning in visitors of all ages by providing a rich variety of interactive, hands-on exhibits and programs that focus on the sciences and mathematics, the humanities, and the arts.
