Sinimulan na noong ika-16 ng Oktubre sa Capitol Site Kalibo, Aklan ang pagpapatayo ng pinakabagong gusali ng NVC, ang Allen Salas Quimpo (ASQ) Center. Ayon kay Allan Angelo L. Quimpo, presidente ng NVC, "Every school has a hero,” kung kaya’t ang naturang gusali ay ipinangalan sa alaala ng namayapang presidente ng NVC na si Dr. Allen Salas Quimpo. Ang itinatayong gusaling ito ay isa lamang sa mga dagdag imprastraktura ng institusyon para sa mga mag-aaral ng NVC. Ito ay upang mas mapaigting pa ang serbisyo sa edukasyon ng mga mag-aaral at magsilbing tugon sa ipinatutupad na programang K-12 ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon.

MassComm, Educ studes top the KBP Accreditation Exam 2017

NVCians dominated the top three spots during the Accreditation Examination administered by the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP), a broadcast media organization in the Philippines that sets ethical standards for broadcasting. The exam was held last September 30, 2017 at the Tonglen Beach Resort, Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan.

In the results released last October 30, 2017, Nino Rogien V. Teodosio, from the Mass Communication department, emerged as the topnotcher.

Glesi Lyn T. Sinag, also a Mass Communication student and Felmerie J. Sabino, a BSEdEnglish major got the second

and third spots, respectively.

“Being on-air is a privilege”, said Prof. Rosa Maria T. Feliciano, KBP Standards Authority Director and one of the speakers during the Accreditation Exam. In her short talk, she also discussed the duties and responsibilities of accredited broadcasters in the nation.

NVC Prof bags nat’l TESDA recognition

BY FELMERIE J. SABINO NVC Professor Neptune T. Tandog Jr. was chosen to be among the top eight (8) of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Tagsanay Award, during its selection process last August 1418, 2017 at the TESDA Central Office in Taguig City.

The Tagsanay Award is now on its third year in recognizing trainers from TESDA Technology Institutions and technical and vocational institutions, both private and public. The nominees and awardees were selected for demonstrating competencies beyond expectations and for exceeding the requirements set for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Mr. Tandog is a TESDA trainer in Bookkeeping (NC 3) in NVC and is currently TES-

DA’s Regional Lead Assessor of Bookkeeping for Region 6.

With his credentials and skills, Mr. Tandog was able to surpass the weeklong rigid selection amongst 29 other nominees.

The elimination process included portfolio assessment, a 50-item test and an essay examination, and individual and group activities - amazing race style. He was able to bag a spot to be among the top eight finalists and was also hailed as the Best Trainer for the Individual and Group Activities.

Mr. Tandog believes that trainers like him play a big role in the realization of TESDA’s mission and vision and in the sustainability of TVET. He understands that they are instrumental in nation building by producing skilled workers. He

As Mr. Tandog puts it, the recognition will serve as an inspiration in “improving the standard, the way of teaching as well as the quality of TESDA courses in Aklan. It is also for the great image of the school because we have equipped our TESDA courses with highly qualified trainers.”/TF

NEWS Davao’s 1st district Rep. Nograles: “There is justice in Federalism” BY: GLESI LYN T. SINAG “Ang dehado […]ang Visayas,” said Representative Karlo Nograles regarding the percentage of national budget allocated to different island groups.

Rep. Nograles of the 1st District of Davao visited the August 19, 2018 episode of Kapihan sa Aklan and talked about how adopting Federalism as the new form of government could pave the way towards fair allocation of budget to all provinces.

He shared that Visayas’ income, which mainly comes from tourism industry, is remitted to the national government, but only 16 to 20 percent of national budget is allocated to Visayas, and only 30 percent is given to Mindanao. Half of the national budget is allotted to Luzon.

Rep. Nograles lamented that the national government does not distribute the funds equally and cites Mindanao’s budget allocation as an example.

“Kulang ang suportang ibinibigay ng national government sa Mindanao”, Nograles said. “We are the food basket of the Philippines. Kami ang nagpapakain sa bansa, pero bakit nananatili pa ring mahirap ang Mindanao?”

One of the reasons he cited why some of the provinces remain poor is that “over the years, we are getting small portion on the national budget”.

“That is why nakikita natin na for how many years, under the system, walang nakikitang development na nakikita sa countryside. Kasi lagi tayong dependent sa national government, kung magkano lang ibibigay sa atin,” he stressed.

He pointed out that there is a call for change in the constitution, specifically to change the form of government to Federalism.

Under the Federalism form of government, every province and state will be motivated to make more revenues because there in an incentive that whatever they earn, they get to keep it and spend it within the province or state. “Tapos yung porsyeto, yun ang ireremit sa national government.”

Nograles added that adopting federalism will be fair to all provinces. “I think that is more equitable, that is more just. Mas may justice ‘yan para sa atin. Para yun ating mga island groups, ang ating mga probinsiya, ang atin mga estado, talagang magsumikap sila na kumita ng maganda.”

There is a concern, however, that there are small provinces that do not have the resources or means to earn their own money. How will they sustain their operations?

Nograles responded that there is where the Big Brother Small Brother scheme will come into play.

In the formation of states, small provinces will be grouped with the bigger or more developed or self- sustaining provinces so that the income of developed provinces will be shared to the lowincome generating provinces.

Nograles assured that the national government will ex-

tend help to the small estates.

The national government will help in the transition.

When asked if President Duterte will be able to achieve this (Federalism) on his term, Rep. Nograles replied that advocates of Federalism hope that they can push through with the constituent assembly by January 2018.

“By January, full blast na ang pag-ammend ng constitution through Constituent Assembly,” he said.

Nograles added that the appointment of the 25-man commission that will draft the constitution is already underway.

“Ang ambisyon namin ay masabay ang ratification ng new constitution sa May 18, 2018 Barangay Elections, as well as the ratification of Bangsamoro Basic Law”.

Rep. Nograles stated that the rationale for adopting a new form of government is to fix the system to facilitate development.

“We have to fix the system para naman umusad at magdevelop ang ating mga provinces,” he said./TF

PACUCOA consultancy visit spurs MAEd’s positive action

The said visit happened last September 21-23, 2017.

All four (4) programs passed the consultancy visit and are now ready for formal preliminary visit.

The school is also encouraging the other academic programs to pursue for accreditation.

This is to ensure that the NVCians are always on the lead. In addition, this will strengthen the legacy of the late NVC president Dr. Allen Salas Quimpo of providing quality education, not only to NVCians but to Aklanon youth./TF

70th Anniversary Preparation The Northwestern Visayan Colleges will celebrate its 70th year anniversary on January 2018. In line with this, the 70th year anniversary official logo, the NVC official website and the NVC alumni Facebook group page were launched last July 22, 2017 at NVC Carmen Hotel. Some distinguished alumni as well as the deans and heads of every department were invited to witness the said event. Launching of NVC Website A new and improved NVC website was launched on July 22, 2017 at 4:00pm at Carmen Hotel. This is in connection with the preparation for the institution’s 70th Anniversary celebration that will happen on January 2018.

The goal of the new website is to provide visitors an easier way to learn about the school’s facilities, rules and policies, schedule of activities and events among others.

Rapiz is SSC Prexy The NVC held its yearly Supreme Student Council (SSC) elections last July 18, 2017.

Arlyn Joy Rapiz was elected SSC president. During the campaign speech she delivered in front of the departmental representatives right before the elections, she declared that the platform of her government is information dissemination and lesser contribution fees for students.

NVCian progress in its many forms “Progress has less to do with speed and more to do with direction.” This quote of an unknown author best describes NVC. Some people may not see nor feel it, but progress is where NVC is directed to. The school is proof that some things are better done slowly, but surely.

That it’s not always about the pace but the process of how you get to where you want to be, in the first place. For NVC, there is no other direction but to move forward; there is no other way but up.

As we celebrate the 70th founding anniversary of our beloved institution, improvement is evident which we can all consider as among the school’s milestones. We now have the newly built Business Center that houses business establishments in the first floor, and student services offices in the second floor. Located in the same building is the new Printing Office that offers printing and other similar services that are student-friendly in price.

What we look forward to is the way these new amenities and structures can help optimize the learning acquisition, both in academic and practical aspects, and how all of these can contribute to the holistic development of every NVCian .

It is of great pride that NVC continues to raise its standard a notch higher, especially in providing quality education for all. This is still the institution’s topmost priority. Let us not forget that we can all make a change and that change can happen now!

Where there is river, there is life

Most, if not all of us, claim to be nature lovers. We gasp at the grand Amazon River of South America, we admire the great Niagara Falls of North America, we marvel at the Pink Lagoon of Australia, we fall in love with the romantic scenery of the River Seine in France.

At this point, let us have a quick review of history. The very first civilization of Mesopotamia was established along

the great rivers of Tigris and Euphrates. That said, even back in the ancient days, rivers signify life. They were sources of water and food. The rivers also sustained our crops and livestock.

They served as channels for transportation and trade. That is why, rivers play a vital role in a community’s day to day survival and progress. Rivers have such great importance that they were being kept clean and

pristine. Others even worship rivers because of its provisions.

It is a painful reality however that this no longer holds true to most of the rivers in the country now. Many have been polluted, abused, and exploited.

Let us not forget to take a look at our very own majestic Aklan River. The longest in the province and the third longest in Panay, the 71-km Aklan River winds through the municipali-

ties of Libacao, Madalag, Malinao, Lezo, Banga, Numancia and Kalibo. My friends, why don’t we ask ourselves this question - What is the current state of our river?

Many of us have experienced the wrath of typhoons Frank and Yolanda a few years ago.

Leveling the playing field

I bet some of you don’t know what ASEAN really is.

Don’t be embarrassed. I, too, was once contented to stare blankly in front of the television, not remotely interested as to why world leaders come to the Philippines to talk amongst themselves then smile and shake hands in front of the cameras. There was a time when all I know about ASEAN is that when there are ASEAN summits and conferences, special lanes are allotted to the

delegates, and severe penalties await the violators (Remember the viral video where an actress said: “Hooooo, ASEAN lane!

Here I come!...be like Maria”?).

When asked if any good come out of hosting the meetings, my constant answer was: “Well, it’s good that the major streets of Metro Manila gets cleared of street dwellers and peddlers, at least for the duration of the ASEAN Summit…right?” Clearly, I had superficial knowledge when it comes to ASEAN.

All that changed when I, together with some of The Forum Publication staffers, attended a Campus Journalism Seminar/ Workshop organized by the Philippine Information Agency Region VI (PIA-6). In one of the sessions, Leonard T. Pineda I, Information Officer II of PIAIloilo, gave us an overview of ASEAN integration. From that talk, I got the answer to some of the important question: What is ASEAN integration? And what good will it do to us?

First off, ASEAN stands for Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It is a regional association with 10-member states, including Philippines. One of the major projects of ASEAN is the establishment of an ASEAN Economic Community, which aims to integrate Southeast Asia’s diverse economies, a region with more than half a billion people and a combined gross domestic product of more than $2 trillion.

Pretty heady stuff, right? Let me share to you, then a much sim-

“Mangmang, walang alam at tamad” ganito kung ilarawan ng karamihan ang mga kabataan ngayon, lalong lalo na ang mga millennials. Puro pagpapaganda at pagpapagwapo ang tanging alam. Marami rin ang nagsasabing, “nagbubulag bulagan”, “nagbibingi- bingihan” at “walang pakialam”.

Ang mga nabanggit ay ang mga negatibong pananaw ng ilan nating kababayan patungkol sa mga kabataan ngayon. Masakit mang aminin subalit ito ang hubad na katotohanan.

Ang mga kaugaliang mi-

nana natin sa ating mga ninuno ay unti-unti nang nakakalimutan. Ang pagiging magalang, ang pagsasabi ng “po at opo”, at ang pagmamano sa mga nakakatanda ay ibinaon na sa baul. Ang pagiging makatao, makakalikasan, at pagiging makabayan ay unti-unti na ring nawawala sa kamalayan ng mga kabataan ngayon.

Isa rin sa mga matunog na isyung ipinupukol sa mga kabataan ay ang pagiging iliterado sa flag etiquettes. Kung ating matatandaan noong nakaraang taon, ang isang estudyante mula

sa isang kilalang pamantasan ay umani ng mga pambabatikos dahil sa paggamit niya ng ating pambansang watawat bilang panglampaso sa sahig.

Kamakailan lang ay inaresto rin ang isang lalaki matapos umanong hindi tumayo at magbigay respeto habang tumutugtug at kinakanta ang pambansang awit sa isang sinehan. Ito ay malinaw na paglabag sa R.A. 8491 o ang “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines”. Ayon sa Sec. 50 ng batas na ito, ang sinumang lalabag ay pagmumultahin ng

hindi bababa sa limang libo (5,000) at hindi tataas sa dalawampung libo (Php 20,000) o pagkakakulong ng isang taon (one year imprisonment).

Ang ating pambansang watawat ay sagisag ng ating pagiging makabayan at sagisag ng ating kasarinlan. Ito ay simbulo ng ating kultura at tradisyon, at naging saksi sa maraming pagbabago ng ating bansa. Alam naman natin na ang ating pambansang watawat ay dumaan sa maraming pagsubok bago ito naging simbolo ng ating bansa. Ito ay nagdaan sa maraming pagba-

ing of its banks. Add to that the tons of garbage thrown at the river. Nowadays, even without strong typhoons such as the ones I’ve mentioned, we still fear sudden downpours, for even the littlest of rain, result to massive flooding. My dear fellow Aklanons, what have we done to our environment?

Is it because of progress? Or simply because of our lack of discipline and lack of love and respect for Mother Nature? As an Indian proverb goes, “Only when the last tree has died, and the last river been poisoned, and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.” The good news is, we still have time and means to save our beloved Aklan River, before it is too late.

At dahil hitik sa kasaysayan ang ating bandila, maraming mga orasyon at ritwal na kailangang isagawa at sundin batay na rin sa okasyon at sitwasyon. Isa na riyan ay ang tamang pagsabit nito. Kapag ito ay ilalahad ng pahiga dapat ay nasa kaliwa ang kulay na bughaw at pula naman ang nasa kanan. Kapag isinasabit ito ng pahalang dapat ay asul na kulay ang nasa taas at pula naman nasa ibaba.

Jollibee visits ASQ Bakhawan Eco-Park, plants mangroves Jollibee, the most famous fast-food chain in the country, with patrons from all walks of life, kept true to its advocacy of partnering with the community.

This time, they chose to help the Allen Salas Quimpo Bakhawan Eco-Park through its project “Bucket for Bakhawan” that will run from October 1 to November 30, of this year.

In 2014, one of the Jollibee stores in Kalibo once organized a tree planting activity at the ASQ Bakhawan EcoPark, but this time, all Jollibee stores in Kalibo namely, Jollibee Drive-Thru along Mabini St., Jollibee City Mall, Jollibee Gaisano, and Jollibee Pastrana decided to join forces and take the challenge “a notch higher this year by involving our consumers” according to

at presentasyon.

Kung kaya’t lalong tumindi ang reaksyon ng mga manonood at maraming estudyante ang pumuna sa naturang pangyayari. Dahil sa pagkabahala, may mga estudyante na tumayo at sumen-

"The musical play was so entertaining because it was presented by the actors with full of effort. I hope to watch them again perform here," said an NVCian audience.

Nakakagalak na masaksihan na ang mga kabataan ngayon ay nakakaalala pa sa kasaysayan at hindi mangmang sa sariling bayan. Ito ay taliwas sa mga sinasabi ng ilan na ang mga kabataan ngayon ay walang alam at walang pakialam. Nagpapatunay lamang ito na ang mga NVCians ay makabansa at makabayan.

Aklanon to build world’s first large-scale “Jellyfish” A New York-based mechanical engineer from Makato, Aklan aims to build the world’s first commercialscale device that could harvest the third most abundant renewable energy---the ocean wave energy---and then convert it into electricity.

Ramuel Taytayon Maramara, founder and CEO of Brimes Energy, Inc. was successful in creating a small-scale version of the device and is now in the process of developing a prototype that could be mass-produced, thus, providing cheaper and more efficient means of generating electricity.

Dubbed as The Jellyfish, the device was proven to be efficient in absorbing wave energy and

then turning it into electricity, as shown by tests conducted

by Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York.

“There is a lot of energy in the waves,” Maramara told NVC The Forum Publication. “For every meter of coastline, that can provide enough energy to light 2000 light bulbs” To have a better grasp on the figures, imagine that you are walking on the beach along the shoreline.

For every step you take, the waves within that step have the energy to provide electricity to five (5) to eight (8) homes.

“Now, the latest prototype that we build, we can absorb

up to 55% of the waves’ energy, and our wave to electricity ratio is 19%,” he said. “I believe that is the highest in the world for a commercial design.”

Maramara’s firm is now in the commercialization phase where they are looking for partners to help them finance the production of a large commercial unit - one that can generate large amount of electricity.

The larger version also has to be economically viable so that people can afford it, just like how they can buy solar panels in stores nowadays.

His invention is now creating a buzz here and abroad, and several NGOs had

already pledged their support to the project, including First Gen Corporation, a renewable energy firm in the Philippines, and Ocean Pixel, a Singaporean firm. Working students’ stories: then and now By: Jil B. Lacson and Erajoy T. Briones

Life is a blend of both fate and series of coincidences. A perfect mixture of bittersweet memories and a combination of both simple and scruffy ideal But sometimes when circumstances are tough, we tend to give up. When trials and tribulations are somewhat hard to handle, we usually think it’s the end for us, and when things seems too great to endure, we are likely to surrender.

In a world full of sufferings, deceit, and perils, there are people who manage to outdo their greatest battles in life. In the darkest time of their lives, they manage to build on to their failures and use it as a stepping stone to reach the summit of their dreams.

They are grounded individuals with high hopes and dreams. These are the life stories of three different people, having three different ideals and philosophy in life with three unusual stories to tell.

RIO SABINO TRAYCO

Rio is a graduate of Bachelor of Arts Major in Mass Communication. He was a former working student and worked for about eight years. He started working when he was in second year high school at the tender age of fifeen.

His parents knew he was work ing while studying; actually they were hesitant at first but after they realized that he is capable of supporting himself while he was studying, they supported their son’s decision.

Their family is big, composed of his parents and ten siblings with him as the seventh child in the family.

“We were really poor back then, I remember sharing one school bag with my brother and using one notebook in every subject”, he recounted.

Even though their family lacks financial stability, Mr. Trayco still considered his childhood as one of the happiest part of his life since in this particular stage, he learned about almost everything in life. “I learned to be patient; I also learned to know God in my life.” He added.

For most us, being a working student is hard to handle but for some who manage to go through this situation, life is a lot more meaningful to experience such kind of challenges.

According to him, there were multiple times where he said to himself that he is tired of being a working student but there’s one question that keeps on making his mind and reminding him to go on in life and that is, “Are you willing to sacrifice a part of your life for a better future?” This question gave him the choice to become positive throughout his life that someday, somehow, and in some way he can get out of the situation.

His first work was a house helper. During his work he is responsible for cleaning the house, paying the bills and managing bank transactions. “This is the reason why I know how to organize things like ensuring that I will not miss any due dates. I have my own calendar in my room. I also have checklist on what to do.

It helped me to become organized and I’m enjoying the benefit of it in my life now,” he said.

Looking back at his experiences, Mr. Trayco was also surprised on how he had managed to overcome all the struggles he have faced when he was still a working student. “Actually I don’t know how did I handle all the tasks but one thing is for sure and that is I know what I’m doing.”

Being a working student was never a hindrance in his life. “I never looked at it as a discouragement but an inspiration that someday I can afford to buy the things that I need and want.”

Rio recounted that there were times when some people will judge him for being too ambitious.

“They put limits and boundaries on what he can do and what we can achieve and they sometimes belittle our accomplishments. Well, if being too ambitious is something that could help me achieve my goals in life, then that’s okay. I just let them say what they want while I’m busy working on what I can possibly achieve because at the end of the day, I will be held accountable of myself and not them.” Mr. Trayco resolved.

“Try to imagine this, studying alone causes most students too much stress. Now in my case, I must know how to prioritize what comes first, my study or my household responsibility. [I try to] remember that without my job I cannot afford to study but at the same time I have an obligation to someone who is paying my school fees” Imagine all the work loads and stack of responsibilities he must fulfil in order to finish college. It must be very difficult to deal all those obligations but still he manage to perform his functions.

“I learned that being a working student prepared me to be emotionally and mentally ready after graduation because of the struggles that I have been through, I am now confident and courageous in running my race and facing the reality as a member of the work force.”

He is currently working as a Customer Service Representative in Manila and hoping to be transferred back to Roxas on the second quarter of next year.

His advice to all working students is: “Do your best in your study and learn how to love your work that pays for your tuition fee. Always think that the situation you are in right now is temporary and when you survive this, good days are waiting out there. Consider your present employer as a channel of blessing and someday you will realize that you are so lucky to be given a chance to study even though it’s hard.” He expressed.

“Don’t waste your time in doing nothing. The best things in life can be achieved by someone who is prepared. Remember opportunities are always out there but the question is: are you ready to grab it?” Mr. Trayco challenged.

Senior Police Officer 3 (SPO3) Rodel Pelayo Ojano

SPO3 Ojano is a former working student when he was still studying in Northwestern

Visayan Colleges. In his early two years in college, he took up Associate Criminology but soon after, he decided to proceed to Bachelor of Science in Criminology. He was an active working student with numerous job to support his education. He worked as a labourer, a painter’s assistant, a boatman, a porter in the pier, a fish vendor, a waiter in a restaurant, and a security guard in Boracay, as well.

SPO3 Ojano is the seventh child among the eight. During his college years, his mother’s occupation was a seamstress while his father was long gone. Due to this reason, his mother could not afford to support all the expenses of their daily living. To help his mother sustain the needs of the family, he worked very hard to support his studies.

He desired to help his family rise from the bitterness of poverty. In order to achieve this, he persevered to finish college and find a decent job wherein he can support his family. He also stated that he doesn’t want to pass on to the next generation of their family the poverty he had experienced.

His ideals are a clear reflection of a successful person. “My principle in life is to be righteous. Whatever you do, do it in the righteous way. In that case, whatever happens to you, wherever you may go, you go with a clean heart. Don’t mind what others are saying against you. As long as you don’t step on other individual’s character or personality, then go for it” Actually because of his enthusiasm and drive to study, his grades made him a candidate for Cum Laude but unfortu nately, he had failed to comply with one requirement in one of his subjects.

For many individuals, graduating college with high recognition is a noble privilege. For some people, however, it is only one thing and there are more into this world.

Seeking something better and a lot more meaningful is far better than the honours we receive.

After his graduation, September 1997 he became a professional police. He is currently serving the country for 20 with the rank of SPO3. “Although the place was hell because of early days of training yet, it feels like heaven for me,” he said.

“My advice to all working students is: Keep it up. You are doing the right thing. Poverty is not the reason to stop dreaming.”

Elmer Dioso Hilario

Mr. Hilario belongs to a regular type of nuclear family.

He considered his childhood as one of the happiest part of his life. He remembered playing in Magsaysay Park, having the time of their lives connecting with people even without the use of technology. For him, this simple act of joy makes him see his childhood memories as a blissful one.

But life is not all about the sweet and happy memories. There are times where pain and sufferings will go in our ways.

During the time where he wanted to pursue college, he decided to become a working student because in that certain time, most of his siblings were also in college. Nobody will help them in their studies but themselves. Due to his strong conviction to finish college, he became a student assistant (SA) in his former school, STI Makati where he studied Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

His family didn’t know that he was working because he didn’t want them to be subjected to his problems since he believed that they too have their own problems that need to be solved.

He tried to handle his own problems which were very difficult according to him.

For Mr. Hilario giving up was never a choice. He said “if you don’t give up, you will get what you want.”

Throughout his working student years, he learned three things: “First, rest is very important. Being a working student is a hectic job. It needs a lot of energy and stamina to perform the entire task excellently. Only by resting the body, can we fulfil the responsibilities we need to accomplish. Second, achieve what is needed to be achieved. Assignments must be done as soon as possible. Don’t waste time doing nothing. Lastly, make sure that everything will be well paid off. At the end of the day, one must decide that all of his hard work and efforts are satisfactorily returned”.

“My advice to those who work for their studies, is try to plan to realize little things. Make sure you love or at least like your work, money won’t buy happiness.

“It’s not the peak that is the happiest in our life, but it’s the road we take.” One of the words of wisdom Mr. Hilario expressed.

“Life is cruel, life would give you a lot of trial, which is one way of putting yourself for who you are now.” He added.

Currently, Mr. Elmer Hilario is a professor in Northwestern Visayan Colleges and the adviser of Music Crafters Guild.

Most of us, at some point in our lives wish that life would be easy; but the truth is, life will be full of adversities. We can’t control them but we can manage to adjust ourselves to the problems that may arise in our horizon.

The path of fulfilment is twisted and evasive but the three of them did not give up to be in their truest, best, and most perfected version of themselves.

Like them, we can be successful individuals. Through realizing our dreams and aspirations in life and doing something to achieve it, there’s no doubt that we can see a bigger horizon ahead of us.

Just follow your heart and intuition, keep the faith, and keep moving forward! /TF

Even justice kills

An extra judicial killing is internationally defined as the killing of a person by governmental authorities without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal process. These types of killings to us, are unethical, inhumane and simply atrocious due to the fact that these, are as defined, carried by those in authority/government like the armed forces or police as extra-legal fulfillment of their prescribed role. In our country, PNP Chief Ronald “BATO” Dela Rosa has repeatedly denied that the police have a role in these activities since the government, specifically the president, has never sanctioned such killings.

They claim that it is either vigilante groups who put justice in their own hands or rival drug dealers and former cohorts who eliminate the competition due to scarcity in drug supply because of the vigorous campaign of the government to rid the nation of this drug infestation.

Blood, sweat and tears not blood, death and fear.

These are words that most people who are victims of this so called Extra Judicial Killings (EJK) cannot even fathom to speak, but these words are also quite suited to their situation. The Philippines has been plagued with unsolved cases of people getting murdered due to drug abuses, who the police say fired the first shots as they were being arrested in buy-bust operations and the others simply vanish for a few days then wind up dead in a river or a ditch somewhere covered in bullets or stab wounds. While there are people who will applaud these felonious acts, there are also those who abhor it, and those who abhor to it are mostly the families of these victims.

Most recently even minors and teens have entered the picture. A series of murders and abduction involving the likes of Kian Delos Santos, Karl Bryan Cruz and some others have stirred up human rights controversy here and even abroad.

Are we really murdering the future our nation? Or did they really fight back and put the law enforcers’ lives in danger?

The PNP Chief who, apologized to the grieving family of these victims also stated the fact that they were never that innocent and that he has information about their involvement in illegal transactions.

But all in all, most of these victims, minor or not share one common ground - poverty. 6.4B pesos worth of illegal drugs were caught through customs and until now no one has paid the price while a few thousand of our countrymen die every day because of a single sachet of shabu and a marked money of 500 pesos.

Fact is, we may never get to know the truth. The incidents have an infinite number of possibilities, to sort out the truth may require time and that is what our country has little of. Have you seen the prices of gas recently? Did the price of commodities go down? It seems not. So does the government focus more on the war on drugs rather that the economy?

Through the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Services, applying for jobs abroad will be easier, thanks to the provision that our professional licenses will be honored in other ASEAN countries as well.

ASEAN Integration is good for the Filipinos because the job markets in the region will be opened wider. But we still have to take into consideration that the job market will be tougher.

A Letter to my Killer

To my executioner,

It may be hard to believe, but I actually pity you.

I am at a better place now, free from physical pain and emotional agony. I’ve escaped all my worldly concerns and the censoring eye of hypocritical society. But whe re are you now? You are left behind to deal with the chaotic aftermath of my untimely demise.

You claim that you made the right decision of pulling the plug, but I can feel that deep insid e you is a gnawing doubt. I bet that you are thinking: Did I mak e a move before it was actually needed? Perhaps there was still a chance that he will recover but I didn’t wait. I am afra id that those questions will haunt you for the rest of your life.

A few days before my passing, the doctors looke d at my charts. Some clicked their tongue as they read the values of my latest laboratory results. Some shook their heads. All of a sudden, our relatives and family friends came and went in a steady stream. All of you talked in hushed tones. You told me to get well fast because you will take me home. But you know what, you can’t fool me. I may be hard of hearing but I caught the tremor in your voice , just like when you were a child and trying to keep yourself from crying. I may have had hard time breathing on my own, but it was only my lungs and heart that had given up. I was still lucid and my brain could still connect the dots.

I knew that the grains on my sand clock are running out.

But I still have some fight left on me yet.

Not a fight for my own survival, but a fight for my legacy’s survival.

Dying would have been horrible if not for the unity and love I saw in your eyes. I only wish I saw that while I was still strong enough to clasp you tightly in my arms.

I would have whispered “I love you” if not for the tubes that block my words.

Let me assure you, I was not afraid of passing. I lived a long and fruitful life. Besi des, what I had for the last few weeks was not living. It was just a postponing of the inevitable. I was not a burden for too long , and I’m happy with that.

As I felt myself slipping away, and the sound of your cries grew fainter and fainter, all I wish ed for was for you to find peace and joy. As soon as possible.

To you who made the courageous decision, I love you.

The Moment You Give Up By: Elsa A. Tenoso

I will never forget that day. I have planned for that thing for so long. I was ready, waiting for the perfect time. In my early age, I know that it was not an ideal thing to do just to get their attention but that was what my mind says. I was prepared for that revenge.

Every day I feel so empty for my mom and dad seem to not notice me. If you were in my situation, you may also be feeling the same. Imagine, I am their one and only child but yet I cannot feel their love and care for me. I always feel neglected and confused.

When I was in high school, I am always boxed in a small room full of isolated adventures. If others say that it was the happiest stage of being a teenager, it was the worst for me.

“Dad, I want to attend the birthday party of my best friend, tonight. All of my classmates will be there. My dress is ready in my bedroom. Her mom just arrived from the US, Mrs. Stevens. You do know her, right?”

“Oh Yes! My comadre Myrna is coming home!

I know her. She was my classmate during my high school. I’m hoping to see her soon. ” “So that means...”

I was expecting that I will be given permission to attend the party but it was in vain. My new dress was not even moved from its place. I never understand why.

Since then, I never asked anything more from them. I never demanded for some

thing else. I started to focus on my studies.

Even when I was a child, my mom and dad had always been busy in their work. My mom is always in a hurry for an emergency in the hospital. She had been a doctor for 15 years. My dad is facing issues in the government and is interviewed over the radio. They don’t even have time for us to eat dinner together. They can’t even sit in the sofa for just 10 seconds.

"Darling, whatever happens, we are always here by your side. Papa and Mama love you."

I always hear those words from them since I was a kid. I was feeling that those utterances were nothing and senseless. Yes, they were giving me everything I need yet I can’t feel the love. Aren’t they aware that I also need their presence in school during Family Day? Their cheers when I’m on play? Their advices when I am down? I needed them badly but they were so busy...

As I become mature, my understanding of things also widens. I realize that I probably won’t have experienced the comfort of living without the sacrifices of my parents.

They had been working for me to ensure my future.

Those thoughts are just high-schoolish. I am already a college student now so I must have to know why things happen.

There is no need for me to attempt that strange idea just like what I have done when I was 10 years old./TF

Dalawang Linggo’t Isang Araw: Diary ng Langaw ni Almond Keiel John O. Macawili

Oo,

dalawang linggo at isang araw lang ang pinakamaikling buhay ng isang langaw. Kaya lubos na pinagplanuhan ni Lala Langaw ang kanyang mga gagawin nang matapos ang kanyang proseso at nang maging isang ganap na siyang langaw. Gusto niya ang mga tao, sa kadahilanang mapagmahal ang mga ito sa mga hayop at insekto.

Isang araw, pumunta siya sa isang paaralan, saktong recess time na ng mga bata. Nakita nito kung paano natuwa ang mga bata sa paruparo kaya lakas loob rin siyang lumapit sa mga ito.

“EWWWWWWW! KADIRI! MAY LANGAW NA DUMAPO SA PAGKAIN KO!” sigaw ng bata. Nalungkot si Lala sa nangyari. “ Bakit sila ganun? Bakit si Pamelang Paruparo gusto nila ako hindi? Nakalilipad rin naman ako gaya niya. May pakpak naman ako di ngalang makulay.”

Kaya naisipan niyang kulayan ang mga pakpak niya mula sa mga sarsa ng mga pagkain sa basurahan. Bumalik si Lalas a paaralan kung saan maraming mga bata. Gustong-gusto niya ang mga ito. Siya ay palipad-lipad dahil pakiramdam niya’y kasing ganda na niya si paruparo dahil makulay narin ang kanyang mga munting pakpak.

“Napakaganda mo na Lala siguradong magugustuhan ka narin nila.” Buong galak na wika ni Lala sa kanyang sarili. Ngunit, tila kabaliktaran ang nangyari.

“OMG! Ewwwwww look what dapo into me! So dumi little langaw! Oh my G! and ano this?

OMG it amoy like panis na food! Nakita ni paruparo ang nangyari at pinagtawanan si Lala napakalungkot ni Lala dahil sa mga nangyari. Pakiramdam niya’y di siya gusto ng lahat.

Siya ay lumipad palayo at nilinis ang kanyang mga pakpak nang kanyang marinig ang iyak ng isang bata. Gaya niya, ang bata ay pinagkaisahan ng kanyang mga kapwa bata. Binabato, sinasakit at sinasabihan ng msasakit na salita. Pangit, baluga, bobo at kung anu-ano pa. Tumakbo ang bata at sinundan siya ni Lala hanggang makarating na ito sa kanilang tahanan.

Sinubukang lumapit ni Lala sa tao sa huling pagkakataon. Gustong patahanin ni Lala ang bata. Kanya itong hinalikan ngunit, tila mas nalungkot ang bata.

“Siguro tama sila, pangit nga ako kasi nilalangaw na.” at dali-daling tumakbo ang bata sa loob ng kanyang kwarto. Mula sa bintana sa labas, pinagmasdan ni langaw ang bata.

Umiiyak, humihikbi, pulang-pula na ang mga mata dahil sa walang tigil na pag-iyak niya.

Kinuha ng bata ang kumot sa kanyang higaan at ito’y tumahan, napangiti si Lala langaw dahil tinali niya ito sa kanyang leeg na para bang nag lalaro nang kakasal-kasalan. Maya-maya’y nabilog ang mata ni Lala nang biglang bumitin ang bata. Ito’y nangisay, tumirik ang mga mata, lumabas ang dila at di na humihinga. Nanigas ang buong katawan ni Lala sa nasaksihan. Ang bata ay nag bigti dahil sa mga bata ring nambubully.

Pakiramdam niya’y wala siyang kakampi,walang masasandalan, walang mapupuntahan.

Ganun pala ang depresiyon, kahit nariyan ang mga handang tumulong sa’yo at dumamay gaya ni Lala ay di mo mapapansin.

Dahil sa pangyayaring iyon, di na nagpaapekto si Lala at buong pusong tinanggap

kung ano at sino siya. Di na niya kailangan pang mag panggap na iba para lang magustuhan ng lahat. Mas minahal niya ang sarili niya dahil naniwala siyang pag sarili mo’y di mo magawang mahalin ang sarili mo binibigyan mo nang awtoridad ang ibang taong di ka rin mahalin at duruduruin. Nag wakas ang buhay ni Lala na maraming aral na kinapulutan natapos ang kanyang dalawang linggo’t isang araw nang masaya at walang pinagsisisihan./TF

Kasi kung yung Forever mo ay perpekto..yung tipong kayong dalawa lang at walang magbabago..Hindi ako naniniwala doon..Kasi lahat ng bagay nagbabago at ayaw mo man o hindi magbabago kayong dalawa.. Mula mainit, maligamgam papuntang malamig. Mula sa matamis ,matabang , maalat maasim tapos mapait. Mula sa dating sobrang sweet at sobrang init dahan-dahan kayong magbabago.. Manlalamig at magpapait ang dating dating mainit at matamis na chemistry ng buhay nyo at kahit mga mathematician hindi kayang isolve ang problema ng chemical composition nyo..

Pero kung ang meaning ng Forever mo ay pagpili sa piling nya kahit maraming nagbago. Dyan maniniwala ako.. Kasi ang Forever ay ang pagpili sa kanya kahit marami nang nagbago at magbabago pa...
